The thermoluminescence (TL) properties of Ce3+ doped NaSr4(BO3)(3) phosphor under the beta-ray irradiation were reported. The polycrystalline sample was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction. The TL glow curve of NaSr4(BO3)(3):Ce3+ phosphor was composed of only one peak. TL kinetic parameters of NaSr4(BO3)(3):Ce3+ were deduced by the peak shape method, the activation energy (E) was 0.590 eV and the frequency factor was 1.008x10(6) s(-1). TL dose response was linear in the range of measurement. The 3-dimensional (3D) TL emission spectrum was also recorded, the emission spectrum consisted of two bands located at 441 and 479 nm respectively, corresponding to the characteristic 4f(0)5d(1)-> F-2((5/2,7/2)) transitions of the Ce3+ ion. The fading behavior of the NaSr4(BO3)(3):Ce3+ phosphor over a period of 15 d was also studied.

A new pyrophosphate long-lasting phosphor with composition of Ca1.96P2O7:0.02Eu(2+), 0.02Y(3+) is synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Its properties are systematically investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. The phosphor emits blue light that is related to the characteristic emission of Eu2+ due to 5d-4f transitions. For the optimized sample, bright blue long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP) could be observed by naked eyes even 6 h after the excitation source is removed. The TL spectra show that the doping of Y3+ ions greatly enhanced intensity of 335 K peak and created new TL peak at about 373 K that is also responsible for the blue LLP. Based on our study, Y3+ ions are suggested to act as electron traps to improve the performance of the blue phosphorescence of Eu2+ such as intensity and persistent time.

By introducing the Y3+ into Sr2P2O7:Eu2+, we successfully prepared a kind of new phosphor with blue long-lasting phosphorescence by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. In this paper, the properties of Sr2P2O7:Eu2+, Y3+ were investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, luminescence decay, long-lasting phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. The phosphor emitted blue light that was related to the 4f(6)5d(1)-S-8(7/2) transition of Eu2+. The bright blue phosphorescence could be observed by naked eyes even 8 h after the excitation source was removed. Two TL peaks at 317 and 378 K related to two types of defects appeared in the TL spectrum. By analyzing the TL curve the depths of traps were calculated to be 0.61 and 0.66 eV. Also, the mechanism of LLP was discussed in this report.

The Sr3Al2O5Cl2:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. The obtained phosphors exhibit a strong absorption in the UV-visible region and have two intense emission bands at 444 and 609 nm. The energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Eu2+ ions was observed, and the critical distance has been estimated to be about 24.5 A by spectral overlap method. Furthermore, the developed phosphors can generate lights from yellow-to-white region under the excitation of UV radiation by appropriately tuning the activator content, indicating that they have potential applications as an UV-convertible phosphor for white light emitting diodes.

Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) thermoluminescence (TL) phosphor was synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction and the effect of Li+, Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti4+ as a codopant on TL of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy was investigated. The results show that Li+ as a codopant improves the emission intensity of high temperature TL peak of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphor whereas the addition of Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti3+ leads to the decrease of TL intensity. The TL emission bands of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphors with Li+, Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti4+ as a codopant are situated at 480, 579, 662 and 755 nm, which were attributed to the characteristic F-4(9/2)-> H-6(15/2), F-4(9/2)-> H-6(13/2), F-4(9/2)-> H-6(11/2) and F-4(9/2)-> H-6(9/2) transitions of Dy3+ ion, consistent with the emission of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphors. The kinetics parameters of 234 degrees C TL peak of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) Dy-0.04(3+), (Li-0.04(+)) phosphor with the values of trap depth E=1.1 eV, frequency factor s=6.3 x 10(9) s(-1) were estimated by a peak shape method, which obey the second order kinetics.

The Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ and Li+-doped Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) as well as lifetimes, was utilized to characterize the resulting phosphors. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light, the Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ and Li+-doped Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ show the characteristic emissions of Eu3+ (D-5(0)-F-7(1,2,3) transitions dominated by D-5(0)-F-7(1) at 593 nm) and Dy3+ (F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2),(13/2) transitions dominated by F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2) at 494 nm), respectively. The incorporation of Li+ ions into the Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ phosphors has enhanced the PL intensities depending on the doping concentration of Li+, and the highest emission was obtained in Ba2Gd0.9NbO6: 0.10Eu(3+), 0.01Li(+) and Ba2Gd0.95NbO6: 0.05Dy(3+), 0.07Li(+), respectively. An energy level diagram was proposed to explain the luminescence process in the phosphors.

Blue emitting GdNbO4: Bi3+ powder phosphors for field emission displays were prepared by a solid state reaction. Both photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties of the materials were investigated. GdNbO4 itself shows only a very weak luminescence in the blue spectral region. By doping Bi3+ in GdNbO4, the luminescence intensity was improved greatly. The emission spectrum of the GdNbO4: Bi3+ consists of a broad band with maximum at 445 nm (lifetime = 0.74 mu s; CIE chromaticity coordinates: x = 0.1519 and y = 0. 1196) for both UV and low voltage (1-7 kV) cathode ray excitation. In GdNbO4:Bi3+ phosphors, the energy transfer from NbO43- to activator Bi3+ occurred.

Mn2+-doped xBaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3) and BaMgAl10O17 phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. The investigation of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation spectra of these phosphors exhibits that 0.82BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a stronger absorption than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ at about 147 nm. The emission spectra under VUV excitation demonstrated that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a higher luminescent intensity than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+. The lifetime analysis indicates that they have similar decay times, indicating that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ can be used as luminescent materials for plasma display panels. We observed that the critical concentration of the Mn2+ ions by host excitation is different from that of Mn2+ direct excitation, revealing a different mechanism of energy transfer. The critical distance was calculated. A model was suggested to explain the process of the energy transfer from the host to the Mn2+ ions.

RE3+-activated alpha- and beta-CaAl2B2O7 (RE = Tb, Ce) were synthesized with the method of high-temperature solid-state reaction. Their VUV excitation and VUV-excited emission spectra are measured and discussed in the present article. The charge transfer band of Tb3+ and Ce3+ is respectively calculated to be at 151 +/- 2 and 159 +/- 3 nm. All the samples show an activator-independent excitation peak at about 175 nm and an emission peak at 350-360 nm ascribed to the host absorption and emission band, respectively.

Phosphors CaYBO4:RE3+ (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb, Ce) were synthesized with the method of solid-state reaction at high temperature, and their vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-visible luminescent properties in VUV-visible region were studied at 20 K. In CaYBO4, it is confirmed that there are two types of lattice sites that can be substituted by rare-earth ions. The host excitation and emission peaks of undoped CaYBO4 are very weak, which locate at about 175 and 350-360nm, respectively. The existence of Gd3+ can efficiently enhance the utilization of host absorption energy and result in a strong emission line at 314 nm. In CaYBO4, Eu3+ has typical red emission with the strongest peak at 610 nm; Tb3+ shows characteristic green emission, of which the maximum emission peak is located at 542 nm. The charge transfer band of CaYBO4:Eu3+ was observed at 228 nm; the co-doping of Gd3+ and Eu3+ can obviously sensitize the red emission of Eu3+. The fluorescent spectra of CaYBO4:Ce3+ is very weak due to photoionization; the co-addition of Ce3+-Tb3+ can obviously quench the luminescence of Tb3+.

LiBa2B5O10:RE3+ (RE = Dy, Tb and Tm) was synthesized by the method of high-temperature solid-state reaction and the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of the samples under the irradiation of the gamma-ray were studied. The result showed that Dy3+ ion was the most efficient activator. When the concentration of Dy3+ was 2 mol%, LiBa2B5O10:Dy3+ exhibited a maximum TL output. The kinetic parameter of LiBa2B5O10:0.02Dy was estimated by the peak shape method, for which the average activation energy was 0.757 eV and the frequency factor was 1.50 x 10(7) s(-1). By the three-dimensional (3D) TL spectrum, the TL of the sample was contributed to the characteristic f-f transition of DY3+. The dose-response of LiBa2B5O10:0.02Dy to gamma-ray was linear in the range from 1 to 1000 mGy. In addition, the decay of the TL intensity of LiBa2B5O10:0.02Dy was also investigated.

Crystalline Y2O3:Eu is of paramount significance in rare earth materials and research on luminescence spectra. In this work, the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu was coated with silica by a facile solid state reaction method at room temperature. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) photographs showed that the prepared Y2O3:Eu particle is polycrystalline with the size of 20 nm, the size of silica-coated particle is about 25 nm. The XPS spectra indicated that the silica layer is likely to interact with Y2O3:Eu by a Si-O-Y chemical bond. The luminescence spectra showed that the intensity of ground samples is lower than that of unground ones, the intensity of silica-coated phosphors is higher than that of the ground samples, while almost the same as that of the unground ones. Therefore, the silica coating decreases the surface defects of nanoparticles of the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu, thus increasing their luminescent intensity.

A reduction phenomenon of Eu3+ -> Eu2+ was observed for the first time when Eu3+ ions were doped into an AlO4-tetrahedron-containing compound BaAl2O4 in an oxidizing atmosphere of air by high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and photoluminescent spectra are used to confirm the compound structure and detect the simultaneous existence of both divalent and trivalent europium ions, respectively. The abnormal Eu3+ -> Eu2+ reduction is explained by a charge compensation model. Spectroscopic properties of BaAl2O4:Eu are discussed and Eu2+ emission spectrum shows consistence with the results reported by Katsumata et a]. [J. Cryst. Growth 198/199 (1999) 869.] and Lin et al. [Mater. Chem. Phys. 70 (2001) 156.].
