Corporate social responsibility (CSR) literature has largely neglected consumers’ perceptions in the debate regarding the role of CSR in the aftermath of the financial crisis. In that context, this study aims to test the possibility that consumers’ perceptions of CSR level, firm reputation and brand trust, might depend on the type of industry sector of a firm, the level of fit of an initiative or both. By conducting a survey on Portuguese consumers and running a two-way analysis of variance, it suggests that solely the type of industry sector has an effect on consumer perception and that consumers are less tolerable of controversial industries.

The objective of this paper is to perform an analysis of the marketing strategy of Lufthansa and Emirates in Germany. Since both airlines use a similar approach to increase brand awareness an in-depth analysis is implemented in order to identify potential differences. Hereby, consumer insights about the perception and expectation travellers have in common will be analyzed and assessed with quantitative data. Both airlines are well positioned in terms of their marketing strategy, but when Emirates is strengthen its marketing campaign with that pace, the Gulf carrier will certainly make use of its economic strength and can become a frightening threat for the Lufthansa Group on long-haul destinations. Finally, recommendations for future marketing activities for both airlines will be given.

Whether the somatosensory system, like its visual and auditory counterparts, is comprised of parallel functional pathways for processing identity and spatial attributes (so-called what and where pathways, respectively) has hitherto been studied in humans using neuropsychological and hemodynamic methods. Here, electrical neuroimaging of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) identified the spatio-temporal mechanisms subserving vibrotactile processing during two types of blocks of trials. What blocks varied stimuli in their frequency (22.5 Hz vs. 110 Hz) independently of their location (left vs. right hand). Where blocks varied the same stimuli in their location independently of their frequency. In this way, there was a 2x2 within-subjects factorial design, counterbalancing the hand stimulated (left/right) and trial type (what/where). Responses to physically identical somatosensory stimuli differed within 200 ms post-stimulus onset, which is within the same timeframe we previously identified for audition (De Santis, L., Clarke, S., Murray, M.M., 2007. Automatic and intrinsic auditory "what" and "where" processing in humans revealed by electrical neuroimaging. Cereb Cortex 17, 9-17.). Initially (100-147 ms), responses to each hand were stronger to the what than where condition in a statistically indistinguishable network within the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulated hand, arguing against hemispheric specialization as the principal basis for somatosensory what and where pathways. Later (149-189 ms) responses differed topographically, indicative of the engagement of distinct configurations of brain networks. A common topography described responses to the where condition irrespective of the hand stimulated. By contrast, different topographies accounted for the what condition and also as a function of the hand stimulated. Parallel, functionally specialized pathways are observed across sensory systems and may be indicative of a computationally advantageous organization for processing spatial and identity information.

Primary sensory cortex discriminates incoming sensory information and generates multiple processing streams toward other cortical areas. However, the underlying cellular mechanisms remain unknown. Here, by making whole-cell recordings in primary somatosensory barrel cortex (S1) of behaving mice, we show that S1 neurons projecting to primary motor cortex (M1) and those projecting to secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) have distinct intrinsic membrane properties and exhibit markedly different membrane potential dynamics during behavior. Passive tactile stimulation evoked faster and larger postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) in M1-projecting neurons, rapidly driving phasic action potential firing, well-suited for stimulus detection. Repetitive active touch evoked strongly depressing PSPs and only transient firing in M1-projecting neurons. In contrast, PSP summation allowed S2-projecting neurons to robustly signal sensory information accumulated during repetitive touch, useful for encoding object features. Thus, target-specific transformation of sensory-evoked synaptic potentials by S1 projection neurons generates functionally distinct output signals for sensorimotor coordination and sensory perception.

This study examined adolescents' reported sexual and dietary health-risk behaviours and perceptions. Specifically, this study analyzed the data of 600 students (300 male~ 300 female) in grades 9, I 1, and OAC (mean, standard deviation). The mean age of the students in the sample is 16 with a standard deviation of 1.6. The study was a secondary analysis ofthe first-year data of a 3-year longitudinal study conducted by Youth Lifestyle Choices-Community University Research Alliance (YLC-CURA) on adolescents. To explore sexuality and dietary health, this study purposefully selected sections of the survey that represented sex and dieting behaviours of adolescents. Separate gender and age data analyses revealed different patterns among the variables. Specifically., findings revealed that adolescents who engaged in recent sexual activities were more likely to have a relatively more positive body image perception and were relatively more likely to engage in disordered eating. Across both genders and 3 age levels, adolescents reported that despite their unhealthy dietary habits they felt that dieting was not a high-risk behaviour. Results were discussed in terms of educational implication for sexual health programs.

This is a descriptive study of elementary school teachers' perceptions of values transmitted in classrooms. Through circulation of a survey to teachers in Public and Separate Schools in the "Golden I-Iorseshoe" distt-ict of SOLtthern Ontario (e}{clLtding Toronto), it was found that teachers do see themselves as promoting values which tend to be conceptual or knowledge-based and receptive and pertain to self-perception and personal growth. Niagara Peninsula of Ontario is the largest viticultural area in Canada. Although it is considered to be a cool and wet region, in the last decade many water stress events occurred during the growing seasons with negative effects on grape and wine quality. This study was initiated to understand and develop the best strategies for water management in vineyards and those that might contribute to grape maturity advancement. The irrigation trials investigated the impact of time of initiation (fruit set, lag phase and veraison), water replacement level based on theoretical loss through crop evapotranspiration (ETc; 100,50 and 25%) and different irrigation strategies [partial root zone drying (PRD) versus regulated deficit irrigation (RD!)] on grape composition and wine sensory profiles. The irrigation experiments were conducted in a commercial vineyard (Lambert Vineyards Inc.) located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, from 2005 through 2009. The two experiments that tested the combination of different water regimes and irrigation time initiation were set up in a randomized block design as follows: Baco noir - three replicates x 10 treatments [(25%, 50% and 100% of ETc) x (initiation at fruit set, lag phase and veraison) + control]; Chardonnay - three replicates x seven treatments [(25%, 50% and 100% of ETc) x (initiation at fruit set and veraison) + control]. The experiments that tested different irrigation strategies were set up on two cultivars as follows: Sauvignon blanc - four replicates x four treatments [control, fully irrigated (100% ETc), PRD (100% ETc) and RDI (25% ETc)]; Cabemet Sauvignon - four replicates x five treatments [control, fully irrigated (100% ETc), PRD (100% ETc), RDI (50% ETc) and RDI (25% ETc)]. The controls in each experiment were nonirrigated. The irrigation treatments were compared for many variables related to soil water status, vine physiology, berry composition, wine sensory profile, and hormone composition [(abscisic acid (ABA) and its catabolites]. Soil moisture profile was mostly affected by irrigation treatments between 20 and 60 em depth depending on the grapevine cultivar and the regime of water applied. Overall soil moisture was consistently higher throughout the season in 100 and 50% ETc compare to the control. Transpiration rates and leaf temperature as well as shoot growth rate were the most sensitive variables to soil water status. Drip irrigation associated with RDI treatments (50% ETc and 25% ETc) had the most beneficial effects on vine physiology, fruit composition and wine varietal typicity, mainly by maintaining a balance between vegetative and reproductive parts of the vine. Neither the control nor the 100 ETc had overall a positive effect on grape composition and wine sensory typicity. The time of irrigation initiation affected the vine physiology and grape quality, the most positive effect was found in treatments initiated at lag phase and veraison. RDI treatments were overall more consistent in their positive effect on grape composition and wine varietal typicity comparing to PRD treatment. The greatest difference between non-irrigated and irrigated vines in most of the variables studied was found in 2007, the driest and hottest season of the experimental period. Soil water status had a greater and more consistent effect on red grapevine cultivars rather than on white winegrape cultivars. To understand the relationships among soil and plant water status, plant physiology and the hormonal profiles associated with it, abscisic acid (ABA) and its catabolites [phaseic acid (PA), dihydrophaseic acid (DPA), 7-hydroxy-ABA (TOH-ABA), 8' -hydroxy-ABA, neophaseic acid and abscisic acid glucose ester (ABA-GE)] were analyzed in leaves and berries from the Baco noir and Chardonnay irrigation trials over two growing seasons. ABA and some of its catabolites accurately described the water status in the vines. Endogenous ABA and some of its catabolites were strongly affected in Baco noir and Chardonnay by both the water regime (i.e. ET level) and timing of irrigation initiation. Chardonnay grapevines produced less ABA in both leaves and berries compared to Baco noir, which indicated that ABA synthesis is also cultivar dependant. ABA-GE was the main catabolite in treatments with high water deficits, while PA and DPA were higher in treatments with high water status, suggesting that the vine produced more ABA-GE under water deficits to maintain rapid control of the stomata. These differences between irrigation treatments with respect to ABA and catabolites were particularly noticeable in the dry 2007 season. Two trials using exogenous ABA investigated the effect of different concentrations of ABA and organs targeted for spraying, on grape maturation and berry composition of Cabemet Sauvignon grapevines, in two cool and wet seasons (2008-2009). The fIrst experiment consisted of three replicates x three treatments [(150 and 300 mg/L, both applications only on clusters) + untreated control] while the second experiment consisted in three replicates x four treatments [(full canopy, only clusters, and only leaves sprayed with 300 ppm ABA) + untreated control]. Exogenous ABA was effective in hastening veraison, and improving the composition of Cabemet Sauvignon. Ability of ABA to control the timing of grape berry maturation was dependant on both solution concentration and the target organ. ABA affected not only fruit composition but also yield components. Berries treated with ABA had lower weight and higher skin dry mass, which constitutes qualitative aspects desired in the wine grapes. Temporal advancement of ripening through hormonal control can lead to earlier fruit maturation, which is a distinct advantage in cooler areas or areas with a high risk of early frost occurrence. Exogenous ABA could provide considerable benefits to wine industry in terms of grape composition, wine style and schedule activities in the winery, particularly in wet and cool years. These trials provide the ftrst comprehensive data in eastern North America on the response of important hybrid and Vitis vinifera winegrape cultivars to irrigation management. Results from this study additionally might be a forward step in understanding the ABA metabolism, and its relationship with water status. Future research should be focused on ftnding the ABA threshold required to trigger the ripening process, and how this process could be controlled in cool climates.

Flavour is a combination of taste, odour, and chemesthetic sensations. Close associations exist between these sensory modalities, and thus, the overall flavour of a food or beverage product can change when the intensity of one or more of these sensations is altered. Strategies to modify flavour are often utilized by the food industry, and are central to the engineering of new and reformulated products. For functional food and beverages, flavour modification is particularly important, as fortifying agents can elicit high levels of less than desirable sensations, such as bitterness and astringency. The application of various flavour modifying strategies can decrease the perceived intensity of these sensations, and in tum, improve the sensory profile of the product. This collection of studies describes the sensory characteristics of experimental functional beverages fortified with trans-resveratrol, (+)-catechin, and/or caffeine, and examines the impact of novel flavour modifying strategies on the perceived flavour of these beverages. In the first study, results demonstrate that the flavour profile of Cabemet Sauvignon wines fortified with 20 mglL and 200 mg/L of trans-resveratrol is not perceived as different compared to control wine (0 mglL). However, Riesling wine fortified with 200 mg/L is perceived as significantly higher in bitterness compared to 20 mglL and control. For some functional food formulations, alternative strategies for flavour modification are needed. Traditional methods, such as the addition of sucrose and sodium chloride, may decrease the perceived 'healthiness' of a product, and thus, may be sub-optimal. In a second study, high and low concentrations of five different bitter inhibiting compounds - 'bitter blockers' - (B-cyclodextrin, homoeridictyol sodium salt, carboxymethylcellulose - low viscosity, zinc sulfate, magnesium sulfate) were tested for their efficacy towards decreasing the bitterness of high and low concentrations of caffeine and (+)catechin - two health-relevant, plant-derived bitterants. B-cyclodextrin and homoeridictyol sodium salt were the most effective blockers at decreasing (+ )-catechin and caffeine, respectively. In addition to bitter blockers, additional flavour modifying strategies, either alone or in combination - may also be successful in functional food formulations. Both sucrose and rebaudioside A - a plant-derived sweetener - were effective at decreasing the bitterness of (+)catechin. When added to (+)-catechin along with B-cyc1odextrin, both sweeteners provided the most effective decrease in bitterness compared to binary, ternary, or quaternary mixtures of (+)catechin together with bitter blockers, sweeteners, andlor odourants. The perceived intensity of sensations elicited by sweeteners and odourants was not affected by the addition of bitter blockers, and thus, their impact within these complex matrices is minimal. In addition, withinmodal (taste-taste) compared to cross-modal (taste-odour) sensory interactions were more effective at decreasing the bitterness of (+ )-catechin. Overall, results from these studies demonstrate that certain novel, alternative flavour modifying approaches may be successful towards lowering the bitterness and astringency elicited by (+ )-catechin and caffeine in aqueous solutions.

The purpose of this qualitative inquiry was to determine how the Practical Nursing and Pharmacy Technician programs in one southern Ontario community college could more effectively accommodate ESL learners' communication needs. The literature review examined (a) linguistic issues, such as language testing and second-language learning theories, (b) organizational matters, such as ESL curriculum and teacher training, and (c) affective issues, such as motivation for second-language learning, learning styles, and the student-teacher relationship. I gathered perceptual data from the programs' administrators, faculty members, and ESL learners. Eleven participants took part in individual interviews or a focus group session. The results suggest that ESL learners need assistance with discipline-specific vocabulary and cultural nuances. College ESL learners' weak communicative competence, together with misleading acceptance standards for ESL learners and limited support available to faculty members and to students, decrease opportunities for successful completion of the programs. The results point to re-assessment of the college's admission policies and procedures, program evaluation practices that consider the needs of ESL learners, discipline-specific language support, and strategies to enhance the ESL student-teacher relationship. The study highlights theory relating to ESL learners' self-perception and engagement, as well as the importance of including the voice of college ESL learners in educational research. The results suggest that despite ESL learners' perseverance in completing their studies, power imbalances remain. The college has yet to implement organizational strategies such as discipline-specific communications and ESL courses and extended language support that could meet the communication needs of ESL learners in the two programs.

Lexical processing among bilinguals is often affected by complex patterns of individual experience. In this paper we discuss the psychocentric perspective on language representation and processing, which highlights the centrality of individual experience in psycholinguistic experimentation. We discuss applications to the investigation of lexical processing among multilinguals and explore the advantages of using high-density experiments with multilinguals. High density experiments are designed to co-index measures of lexical perception and production, as well as participant profiles. We discuss the challenges associated with the characterization of participant profiles and present a new data visualization technique, that we term Facial Profiles. This technique is based on Chernoff faces developed over 40 years ago. The Facial Profile technique seeks to overcome some of the challenges associated with the use of Chernoff faces, while maintaining the core insight that recoding multivariate data as facial features can engage the human face recognition system and thus enhance our ability to detect and interpret patterns within multivariate datasets. We demonstrate that Facial Profiles can code participant characteristics in lexical processing studies by recoding variables such as reading ability, speaking ability, and listening ability into iconically-related relative sizes of eye, mouth, and ear, respectively. The balance of ability in bilinguals can be captured by creating composite facial profiles or Janus Facial Profiles. We demonstrate the use of Facial Profiles and Janus Facial Profiles in the characterization of participant effects in the study of lexical perception and production.

Introduction : Au sein de la population vieillissante, les chutes à domicile représentent une problématique importante (1 personne âgée/3 chute au moins 1 fois/année). Pour détecter automatiquement les chutes en respectant la vie privée, une technologie novatrice a été développée : la vidéosurveillance intelligente. Objectif : Explorer la perception et la réceptivité des personnes âgées concernant l’introduction de cette nouvelle technologie, à domicile. Méthodologie : Trente personnes âgées ont participé à une entrevue structurée (devis mixte). Une analyse de contenu (données qualitatives) et des analyses descriptives (données quantitatives) ont été effectuées puis combinées. Résultats : 93,4% des participants sont favorables (ou partiellement) à la vidéosurveillance intelligente et 43,3% l’utiliserait pour le sentiment de sécurité et la confidentialité procurés. Conclusion : Le contexte de vie des personnes âgées influence leur perception et réceptivité envers la vidéosurveillance intelligente. Il s’agit maintenant d’évaluer cette technologie dans divers milieux de vie.

Introduction : Les personnes âgées vivant à domicile font des chutes qui peuvent entraîner des conséquences graves. La possibilité de les détecter et d’intervenir rapidement grâce à la vidéosurveillance intelligente constitue une avenue prometteuse. Objectif : L’étude vise à explorer la perception et la récep-tivité des acteurs du système de santé face à l’utilisation de cette technologie sous trois aspects : la transmission des images, l’accessibilité de leur clientèle à cette technologie et son introduction dans leur pratique. Méthodologie : Sept groupes de discussion focalisée ont permis de recueillir le point de vue de 31 participants. Une analyse de contenu avec le logiciel N’Vivo a été réalisée. Résultats : Les participants estiment que les images de chute pourraient parve-nir au CLSC, au proche aidant, au 911 ou à une centrale de surveillance. Ils considèrent que des critères d’admissibilité seraient nécessaires pour favoriser l’accessibilité à la vidéosurveillance intelligente qui, croient-ils, pourrait améliorer les interventions en termes de gestion des urgences lors de chutes et de déter-mination de leurs causes. Conclusion : Les participants sont favorables à la technologie proposée, mais ils requerraient une période d’adaptation afin d’ajuster leur pratique. Ils suggèrent la réalisation d’un projet pilote qui validerait cette technologie.

La douleur est une expérience multidimensionnelle comportant des aspects sensoriels, émotionnels et cognitifs. Il a été montré que cette expérience peut être modulée par des facteurs psychologiques ou des interventions cognitives comme l’attention, la distraction, l’hypnose ou les attentes. La tradition orientale suggère également que la pratique de la méditation pourrait avoir des effets analgésiques. D’un point de vue théorique, plusieurs mécanismes pourraient expliquer ces effets. Cependant, très peu d’études ont testé ces hypothèses. Les études présentées dans cette thèse avaient donc pour objectif d’examiner les mécanismes analgésiques de la méditation. Dans un premier temps, une étude psychophysique a été réalisée afin de comparer les réponses à la douleur entre des adeptes de la méditation Zen et des sujets contrôles, dans différentes conditions attentionnelles. Durant la condition attentionnelle de type « mindful », les adeptes de la méditation ont présenté une plus faible sensibilité à la douleur, des réponses attentionnelles à la douleur atypiques et une diminution de la perception de la douleur associée à l’entraînement à la méditation. Une deuxième étude a été réalisée en imagerie par résonance magnétique fonctionnelle (IRMf) avec des groupes de participants similaires. Dans une condition sans méditation, les adeptes de la méditation ont présenté de plus fortes réponses nociceptives dans les régions primaires de la douleur. Les régions cérébrales associées aux processus d’évaluation, à la mémoire et aux émotions ont quant à elles montré une diminution d’activité. De plus, cette diminution était plus importante chez les adeptes de la méditation les plus expérimentés et elle était associée à des évaluations de douleur plus faibles. Par ailleurs, des changements de connectivité fonctionnelle entre le cortex préfrontal et une région primaires de la douleur étaient associés à la sensibilité à la douleur chez les adeptes de la méditation. Finalement, une étude d’imagerie cérébrale structurale (publiée comme deux études séparées) a été réalisée pour examiner les différences d’épaisseur corticale entre les groupes, pour des régions associées à la douleur. Les adeptes de la méditation ont présenté une épaisseur plus importante de matière grise dans plusieurs régions associées à la douleur et l’attention. De plus, ces différences étaient associées à une mesure expérientielle de l’attention, à la sensibilité à la douleur et à l’expérience de méditation. Dans l’ensemble, ces résultats suggèrent que la méditation pourrait influencer la perception de la douleur par des changements fonctionnels et physiques dans le cerveau. De plus, le patron d’activation et la modulation de l’expérience paraissent uniques en comparaison à ceux d’autres interventions, ce qui suggère qu’un état de détachement et un focus mental favorisent la dissociation entre les aspects désagréables et sensoriels d’un stimulus nociceptif.

Problématique : Le rôle des paramédics se transforme partout dans le monde. Les besoins des aînés et des malades chroniques entraînent une forte proportion d’interventions préhospitalières non urgentes. La confrontation entre la perception et l’expérience du rôle peut entraîner un conflit correspondant à un stress organisationnel modéré et chronique chez ces travailleurs. Pour y faire face, différentes stratégies d’adaptation peuvent être adoptées. Objectifs : Cette étude vise à dépeindre la réalité des interventions préhospitalières non urgentes des paramédics québécois et à explorer son influence sur leur perception du rôle et les manifestations de cynisme et de désengagement. Méthode : Les données qualitatives obtenues en entrevues semi-structurées ont été codifiées et analysées à partir d’un modèle adapté des théories en psychosociologie du travail et d’administration de la santé (n=13, 3 régions, intervenants de - de 3 à + de 20 ans de carrière). Résultats : Les paramédics reconnaissent vivre un conflit de rôle alors que la formation et la définition de leur pratique se rapportent exclusivement à l’urgence, au contraire de leur expérience. Ils manifestent des attitudes de cynisme et de désengagement affectant la qualité des services, précisant qu’il s’agit d’une réalité inhérente à leur expérience professionnelle intimement reliée à l’épuisement professionnel, plus qu’à un manque fondamental de professionnalisme. Conclusion : Les paramédics décrivent différents mécanismes à instaurer qui visent à reconnaître la dualité conflictuelle de leur pratique dont, la mise en valeur de leur aptitude clinique à intervenir en première ligne dans un cadre préhospitalier non urgent ainsi que l’ajustement et le rehaussement des programmes de formation.
