In humans and other mammals, sperm morphology has been considered one of the most important predictive parameters of fertility. The objective was to determine the presence and distribution of sperm head morphometric subpopulations in a nonhuman primate model (Callithrix jacchus), using an objective computer analysis system and principal component analysis (PCA) methods to establish the relationship between the subpopulation distribution observed and among-donor variation. The PCA method revealed a stable number of principal components in all donors studied, that represented more than 85% of the cumulative variance in all cases. After cluster analysis, a variable number (from three to seven) sperm morphometric subpopulations were identified with defined sperm dimensions and shapes. There were differences in the distribution of the sperm morphometric subpopulations (P < 0.001) in all ejaculates among the four donors analyzed. In conclusion, in this study, computerized sperm analysis methods combined with PCA cluster analyses were useful to identify, classify, and characterize various head sperm morphometric subpopulations in nonhuman primates, yielding considerable biological information. In addition, because all individuals were kept in the same conditions, differences in the distribution of these subpopulations were not attributed to external or management factors. Finally, the substantial information derived from subpopulation analyses provided new and relevant biological knowledge which may have a practical use for future studies in human and nonhuman primate ejaculates, including identifying individuals more suitable for assisted reproductive technologies. Serotonin (5-HT), opioids and the dorsal periaqueductal grey (DPAG) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. In order to study 5-HT-opioid interaction, the opioid antagonist naloxone was injected either systemically (1 mg/kg, i.p.) or intra-DPAG (0.2 mu g/0.5 mu L) to assess its interference with the effect of chronic fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, i.p., daily for 21 days) or of intra-DPAG 5-HT (8 mu g/0.5 mu L). Drug effects were measured in the one-escape task of the rat elevated T-maze, an animal model of panic. Pretreatment with systemic naloxone antagonized the lengthening of escape latency caused by chronic fluoxetine, considered a panicolytic-like effect that parallels the drug's therapeutic response in the clinics. Pretreatment with naloxone injected intra-DPAG antagonized both the panicolytic effect of chronic fluoxetine as well as that of 5-HT injected intra-DPAG. Neither the performance of the inhibitory avoidance task in the elevated T-maze, a model of generalized anxiety nor locomotion measured in a circular arena was affected by the above drug treatments. These results indicate that the panicolytic effect of fluoxetine is mediated by endogenous opioids that are activated by 5-HT in the DPAG. They also allow reconciliation between the serotonergic and opioidergic hypotheses of panic disorder pathophysiology.

Plasmodium malariae is a protozoan parasite that causes malaria in humans and is genetically indistinguishable from Plasmodium brasilianum, a parasite infecting New World monkeys in Central and South America. P. malariae has a wide and patchy global distribution in tropical and subtropical regions, being found in South America, Asia, and Africa. However, little is known regarding the genetics of these parasites and the similarity between them could be because until now there are only a very few genomic sequences available from simian Plasmodium species. This study presents the first molecular epidemiological data for P. malariae and P. brasilianum from Brazil obtained from different hosts and uses them to explore the genetic diversity in relation to geographical origin and hosts. By using microsatellite genotyping, we discovered that of the 14 human samples obtained from areas of the Atlantic forest, 5 different multilocus genotypes were recorded, while in a sample from an infected mosquito from the same region a different haplotype was found. We also analyzed the longitudinal change of circulating plasmodial genetic profile in two untreated non-symptomatic patients during a 12-months interval. The circulating genotypes in the two samples from the same patient presented nearly identical multilocus haplotypes (differing by a single locus). The more frequent haplotype persisted for almost 3 years in the human population. The allele Pm09-299 described previously as a genetic marker for South American P. malariae was not found in our samples. Of the 3 non-human primate samples from the Amazon Region, 3 different multilocus genotypes were recorded indicating a greater diversity among isolates of P. brasilianum compared to P. malariae and thus, P. malariae might in fact derive from P. brasilianum as has been proposed in recent studies. Taken together, our data show that based on the microsatellite data there is a relatively restricted polymorphism of P. malariae parasites as opposed to other geographic locations. In mammals, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) are the main components of the circadian timing system. The SCN is the site of the endogenous biological clock that generates rhythms and synchronizes them to environmental cues. The IGL is a key structure that modulates SCN activity and is responsible for the transmission of non-photic information to the SCN, thus participating in the integration between photic and non-photic stimuli. Both the SCN and IGL receive projections of retinal ganglion cells and the IGL is connected to the SCN through the geniculohypothalamic tract. Little is known about these structures in the primate brain and the pregeniculate nucleus (PGN) has been suggested to be the primate equivalent of the rodent IGL. The aim of this study was to characterize the PGN of a primate, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), and to analyze its retinal afferents. Here, the marmoset PGN was found to be organized into three subsectors based on neuronal size, pattern of retinal projections, and the distribution of neuropeptide Y-, GAD-, serotonin-, enkephalin- and substance P-labeled terminals. This pattern indicates that the marmoset PGN is equivalent to the IGL. This detailed description contributes to the understanding of the circadian timing system in this primate species considering the importance of the IGL within the context of circadian regulation. Panic disorder patients are vulnerable to recurrent panic attacks. Two neurochemical hypotheses have been proposed to explain this susceptibility. The first assumes that panic patients have deficient serotonergic inhibition of neurons localized in the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter of the midbrain that organize defensive reactions to cope with proximal threats and of sympathomotor control areas of the rostral ventrolateral medulla that generate most of the neurovegetative symptoms of the panic attack. The second suggests that endogenous opioids buffer normal subjects from the behavioral and physiological manifestations of the panic attack, and their deficit brings about heightened suffocation sensitivity and separation anxiety in panic patients, making them more vulnerable to panic attacks. Experimental results obtained in rats performing one-way escape in the elevated T-maze, an animal model of panic, indicate that the inhibitory action of serotonin on defense is connected with activation of endogenous opioids in the periaqueductal gray. This allows reconciliation of the serotonergic and opioidergic hypotheses of panic pathophysiology, the periaqueductal gray being the fulcrum of serotonin-opioid interaction.

[ES]El poeta Vicente Aleixandre prestó su apoyo durante la Guerra Civil española al bando republicano, hasta que en los primeros meses de 1937 los mismos republicanos lo detuvieron y lo llevaron a la cárcel, aunque antes de las veinticuatro horas fue puesto en libertad. A partir de ese momento –y tras un intento frustrado de salir del país– se retiró de la vida pública y optó por el silencio. Acabada la guerra, mantuvo una distancia crítica con el régimen franquista e hizo cuanto le fue posible por la reconciliación entre las dos Españas.

Introduction. Postnatal neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, can be modulated by numerous determinants, such as hormones, transmitters and stress. Among the factors positively interfering with neurogenesis, the complexity of the environment appears to play a particularly striking role. Adult mice reared in an enriched environment produce more neurons and exhibit better performance in hippocampus-specific learning tasks. While the effects of complex environments on hippocampal neurogenesis are well documented, there is a lack of information on the effects of living under socio-sensory deprivation conditions. Due to the immaturity of rats and mice at birth, studies dealing with the effects of environmental enrichment on hippocampal neurogenesis were carried out in adult animals, i.e. during a period of relatively low rate of neurogenesis. The impact of environment is likely to be more dramatic during the first postnatal weeks, because at this time granule cell production is remarkably higher than at later phases of development. The aim of the present research was to clarify whether and to what extent isolated or enriched rearing conditions affect hippocampal neurogenesis during the early postnatal period, a time window characterized by a high rate of precursor proliferation and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. The experimental model chosen for this research was the guinea pig, a precocious rodent, which, at 4-5 days of age can be independent from maternal care. Experimental design. Animals were assigned to a standard (control), an isolated, or an enriched environment a few days after birth (P5-P6). On P14-P17 animals received one daily bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) injection, to label dividing cells, and were sacrificed either on P18, to evaluate cell proliferation or on P45, to evaluate cell survival and differentiation. Methods. Brain sections were processed for BrdU immunhistochemistry, to quantify the new born and surviving cells. The phenotype of the surviving cells was examined by means of confocal microscopy and immunofluorescent double-labeling for BrdU and either a marker of neurons (NeuN) or a marker of astrocytes (GFAP). Apoptotic cell death was examined with the TUNEL method. Serial sections were processed for immunohistochemistry for i) vimentin, a marker of radial glial cells, ii) BDNF (brain-derived neurotrofic factor), a neurotrophin involved in neuron proliferation/survival, iii) PSA-NCAM (the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule), a molecule associated with neuronal migration. Total granule cell number in the dentate gyrus was evaluated by stereological methods, in Nissl-stained sections. Results. Effects of isolation. In P18 isolated animals we found a reduced cell proliferation (-35%) compared to controls and a lower expression of BDNF. Though in absolute terms P45 isolated animals had less surviving cells than controls, they showed no differences in survival rate and phenotype percent distribution compared to controls. Evaluation of the absolute number of surviving cells of each phenotype showed that isolated animals had a reduced number of cells with neuronal phenotype than controls. Looking at the location of the new neurons, we found that while in control animals 76% of them had migrated to the granule cell layer, in isolated animals only 55% of the new neurons had reached this layer. Examination of radial glia cells of P18 and P45 animals by vimentin immunohistochemistry showed that in isolated animals radial glia cells were reduced in density and had less and shorter processes. Granule cell count revealed that isolated animals had less granule cells than controls (-32% at P18 and -42% at P45). Effects of enrichment. In P18 enriched animals there was an increase in cell proliferation (+26%) compared to controls and a higher expression of BDNF. Though in both groups there was a decline in the number of BrdU-positive cells by P45, enriched animals had more surviving cells (+63) and a higher survival rate than controls. No differences were found between control and enriched animals in phenotype percent distribution. Evaluation of the absolute number of cells of each phenotype showed that enriched animals had a larger number of cells of each phenotype than controls. Looking at the location of cells of each phenotype we found that enriched animals had more new neurons in the granule cell layer and more astrocytes and cells with undetermined phenotype in the hilus. Enriched animals had a higher expression of PSA-NCAM in the granule cell layer and hilus Vimentin immunohistochemistry showed that in enriched animals radial glia cells were more numerous and had more processes.. Granule cell count revealed that enriched animals had more granule cells than controls (+37% at P18 and +31% at P45). Discussion. Results show that isolation rearing reduces hippocampal cell proliferation but does not affect cell survival, while enriched rearing increases both cell proliferation and cell survival. Changes in the expression of BDNF are likely to contribute to he effects of environment on precursor cell proliferation. The reduction and increase in final number of granule neurons in isolated and enriched animals, respectively, are attributable to the effects of environment on cell proliferation and survival and not to changes in the differentiation program. As radial glia cells play a pivotal role in neuron guidance to the granule cell layer, the reduced number of radial glia cells in isolated animals and the increased number in enriched animals suggests that the size of radial glia population may change dynamically, in order to match changes in neuron production. The high PSA-NCAM expression in enriched animals may concur to favor the survival of the new neurons by facilitating their migration to the granule cell layer. Conclusions. By using a precocious rodent we could demonstrate that isolated/enriched rearing conditions, at a time window during which intense granule cell proliferation takes place, lead to a notable decrease/increase of total granule cell number. The time-course and magnitude of postnatal granule cell production in guinea pigs are more similar to the human and non-human primate condition than in rats and mice. Translation of current data to humans would imply that exposure of children to environments poor/rich of stimuli may have a notably large impact on dentate neurogenesis and, very likely, on hippocampus dependent memory functions.

Statistical modelling and statistical learning theory are two powerful analytical frameworks for analyzing signals and developing efficient processing and classification algorithms. In this thesis, these frameworks are applied for modelling and processing biomedical signals in two different contexts: ultrasound medical imaging systems and primate neural activity analysis and modelling. In the context of ultrasound medical imaging, two main applications are explored: deconvolution of signals measured from a ultrasonic transducer and automatic image segmentation and classification of prostate ultrasound scans. In the former application a stochastic model of the radio frequency signal measured from a ultrasonic transducer is derived. This model is then employed for developing in a statistical framework a regularized deconvolution procedure, for enhancing signal resolution. In the latter application, different statistical models are used to characterize images of prostate tissues, extracting different features. These features are then uses to segment the images in region of interests by means of an automatic procedure based on a statistical model of the extracted features. Finally, machine learning techniques are used for automatic classification of the different region of interests. In the context of neural activity signals, an example of bio-inspired dynamical network was developed to help in studies of motor-related processes in the brain of primate monkeys. The presented model aims to mimic the abstract functionality of a cell population in 7a parietal region of primate monkeys, during the execution of learned behavioural tasks.

Prehension in an act of coordinated reaching and grasping. The reaching component is concerned with bringing the hand to object to be grasped (transport phase); the grasping component refers to the shaping of the hand according to the object features (grasping phase) (Jeannerod, 1981). Reaching and grasping involve different muscles, proximal and distal muscles respectively, and are controlled by different parietofrontal circuit (Jeannerod et al., 1995): a medial circuit, involving area of superior parietal lobule and dorsal premotor area 6 (PMd) (dorsomedial visual stream), is mainly concerned with reaching; a lateral circuit, involving the inferior parietal lobule and ventral premotor area 6 (PMv) (dorsolateral visual stream), with grasping. Area V6A is located in the caudalmost part of the superior parietal lobule, so it belongs to the dorsomedial visual stream; it contains neurons sensitive to visual stimuli (Galletti et al. 1993, 1996, 1999) as well as cells sensitive to the direction of gaze (Galletti et al. 1995) and cells showing saccade-related activity (Nakamura et al. 1999; Kutz et al. 2003). Area V6A contains also arm-reaching neurons likely involved in the control of the direction of the arm during movements towards objects in the peripersonal space (Galletti et al. 1997; Fattori et al. 2001). The present results confirm this finding and demonstrate that during the reach-to-grasp the V6A neurons are also modulated by the orientation of the wrist. Experiments were approved by the Bioethical Committee of the University of Bologna and were performed in accordance with National laws on care and use of laboratory animals and with the European Communities Council Directive of 24th November 1986 (86/609/EEC), recently revised by the Council of Europe guidelines (Appendix A of Convention ETS 123). Experiments were performed in two awake Macaca fascicularis. Each monkey was trained to sit in a primate chair with the head restrained to perform reaching and grasping arm movements in complete darkness while gazing a small fixation point. The object to be grasped was a handle that could have different orientation. We recorded neural activity from 163 neurons of the anterior parietal sulcus; 116/163 (71%) neurons were modulated by the reach-to-grasp task during the execution of the forward movements toward the target (epoch MOV), 111/163 (68%) during the pulling of the handle (epoch HOLD) and 102/163 during the execution of backward movements (epoch M2) (t_test, p ≤ 0.05). About the 45% of the tested cells turned out to be sensitive to the orientation of the handle (one way ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05). To study how the distal components of the movement, such as the hand preshaping during the reaching of the handle, could influence the neuronal discharge, we compared the neuronal activity during the reaching movements towards the same spatial location in reach-to-point and reach-to-grasp tasks. Both tasks required proximal arm movements; only the reach-to-grasp task required distal movements to orient the wrist and to shape the hand to grasp the handle. The 56% of V6A cells showed significant differences in the neural discharge (one way ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05) between the reach-to-point and the reach-to-grasp tasks during MOV, 54% during HOLD and 52% during M2. These data show that reaching and grasping are processed by the same population of neurons, providing evidence that the coordination of reaching and grasping takes place much earlier than previously thought, i.e., in the parieto-occipital cortex. The data here reported are in agreement with results of lesions to the medial posterior parietal cortex in both monkeys and humans, and with recent imaging data in humans, all of them indicating a functional coupling in the control of reaching and grasping by the medial parietofrontal circuit.

Regulatory T cells (Treg) actively regulate alloimmune responses and promote transplantation tolerance. Polyclonal anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG), a widely used induction therapy in clinical organ transplantation, depletes peripheral T cells. However, resistance to tolerance induction is seen with certain T cell depleting strategies and is attributed to alterations in the balance of naïve, memory and regulatory T cells. Here we report a novel reagent, murine ATG (mATG), depletes T cells but preferentially spares CD25+ natural Tregs which limit skewing of T cell repertoire toward T-effector-memory (Tem) phenotype among the recovering T cells. T-cell depletion with mATG combined with CTLA4Ig and Sirolimus synergize to prolong graft survival by tipping the Treg/Tem balance further in favor of Tregs by preserving Tregs, facilitating generation of new Tregs by a conversion mechanism and limiting Tem expansion in response to alloantigen and homeostatic proliferation. These results provide the rationale for translating such novel combination therapies to promote tolerance in primate and human organ transplantation.

Actual trends in software development are pushing the need to face a multiplicity of diverse activities and interaction styles characterizing complex and distributed application domains, in such a way that the resulting dynamics exhibits some grade of order, i.e. in terms of evolution of the system and desired equilibrium. Autonomous agents and Multiagent Systems are argued in literature as one of the most immediate approaches for describing such a kind of challenges. Actually, agent research seems to converge towards the definition of renewed abstraction tools aimed at better capturing the new demands of open systems. Besides agents, which are assumed as autonomous entities purposing a series of design objectives, Multiagent Systems account new notions as first-class entities, aimed, above all, at modeling institutional/organizational entities, placed for normative regulation, interaction and teamwork management, as well as environmental entities, placed as resources to further support and regulate agent work. The starting point of this thesis is recognizing that both organizations and environments can be rooted in a unifying perspective. Whereas recent research in agent systems seems to account a set of diverse approaches to specifically face with at least one aspect within the above mentioned, this work aims at proposing a unifying approach where both agents and their organizations can be straightforwardly situated in properly designed working environments. In this line, this work pursues reconciliation of environments with sociality, social interaction with environment based interaction, environmental resources with organizational functionalities with the aim to smoothly integrate the various aspects of complex and situated organizations in a coherent programming approach. Rooted in Agents and Artifacts (A&A) meta-model, which has been recently introduced both in the context of agent oriented software engineering and programming, the thesis promotes the notion of Embodied Organizations, characterized by computational infrastructures attaining a seamless integration between agents, organizations and environmental entities.

Der Längenpolymorphismus des C4-Gens beruht auf der An- oder Abwesenheit einer 6.4 kb langen Insertion im Intron 9. Es handelt sich dabei um einen eigenständigen bisher noch nicht beschriebenen Virus-Typ, der alle Sequenzmerkmale der Familie der humanen endogenen Retroviren (HERV) trägt und zu den HERV-K Viren gehört. Der Provirus wurde als HERV-K(C4) bezeichnet. Die Orientierung dieses retroviralen Elements ist entgegengesetzt zu der Transkriptionsrichtung des C4-Gens. Mittels RT-PCR, RNase Protection Assays und Northern-Blot Analysen konnte der Nachweis von HERV-K(C4)-Antisense mRNA-Transkripten in verschiedenen humanen Zellinien und Geweben erbracht werden. Die retroviralen Transkripte schlossen am 5'- und 3'-Ende Sequenzen des C4-Exon 9 und Exon 10 ein, so daß diese wahrscheinlich "readthrough" Transkripte darstellen, die durch einen 5' des LTR2 gelegenen Promotor initiiert oder im Zusammenhang mit der C4-Expression transkribiert und reguliert werden. Weiterhin konnten insgesamt 4 HERV-K(C4)-mRNA Spezies, einschließlich einer Vollängen-RNA detektiert werden. Die drei subgenomischen mRNAs werden vermutlich durch einfaches und mehrfaches Spleißen generiert. Die quantitative Analyse in verschiedenen humanen Zellinien ergab, daß HERV-K(C4) durchschnittlich mit einer Kopienanzahl zwischen ca.1 bis 100 Transkripten in einer Zelle vorkommt, so daß es sich um low abundance mRNAs handelt. Mittels eines Reportergen-System konnte eine Aktivität des LTR2-Promotors in der Sense-Orientierung des Retrovirus nachgewiesen werden, die nach Stimulation mit IFN- signifikant abnahm. Ein humanes Modell-Systems wurde etabliert, um die Theorie einer Antisense-Abwehr gegen exogene Retroviren in HepG2-Zellen zu überprüfen. Die Theorie basiert auf dem Nachweis von HERV-K(C4)-Antisense-Transkripten, die über eine Heteroduplexbildung mit der Sense-mRNA von verwandten, infektiösen Retroviren eine mögliche Blockierung deren Translation erwirken könnten. Es konnte eine signifikante Abnahme der retroviralen Expression von bis zu 45% nach steigenden Dosen an IFN- in HepG2-Zellen nachgewiesen werden. Der funktionell aktive 3'-LTR-Sense Promotor sowie der Nachweis von HERV-K(C4)-Antisense Transkripten sprechen für die bedeutende Rolle von HERV-K(C4) bei der Genregulation und Schutz gegen exogene Retroviren, wodurch eine Selektion stattgefunden hat.

Comparative fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) mapping revealed four large DNA segments which have been conserved in their entirety between human chromosome 3 and Bornean orangutan chromosome 2 as well as three evolutionary breakpoints which distinguish between the human and Bornean orangutan chromosome forms. Examination of the structural and functional features of evolutionary breakpoints provides new insights into the possible effects of evolutionary rearrangements on genome function and the relationship between human chromosome pathology and evolution. FISH of human BAC clones which were assesssed in human genomic sequence to primate chromosomes, combined with precise breakpoint localizations by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of flow-sorted chromosomes and in silico analysis, were used to characterize the evolutionary breakpoints. La legge n. 146 del 1990 ha istituito la Commissione di garanzia per l’attuazione della legge sullo sciopero nei servizi pubblici essenziali, un’authority deputata al controllo dell’effettivo bilanciamento del diritto di sciopero con gli altri diritti della persona di rango costituzionale nel caso dei servizi pubblici essenziali. Ad essa spettano alcuni poteri tra di loro eterogenei. Accanto a poteri propulsivi e sanzionatori, essa possiede poteri di tipo normativo. La legge prevede, infatti, che le prestazioni indispensabili e le altre misure necessarie al contemperamento siano determinate da accordi tra il datore di lavoro e le associazioni sindacali, mentre per il lavoro autonomo da codici di autoregolamentazione forniti da ognuna delle categorie interessate. Gli accordi e i codici di autoregolamentazione devono essere, comunque, sottoposti al vaglio della Commissione di garanzia la quale in ultimo stabilisce se essi siano idonei a realizzare il bilanciamento dei diritti in questione. Quando i soggetti indicati dalla legge non provvedano alla redazione dei suddetti atti, la Commissione interviene con l’emanazione di una provvisoria regolamentazione, la quale possiede natura di regolamento, giacchè partecipa dei caratteri della generalità ed astrattezza propri delle norme di legge. In effetti, anche altre authorities possiedono un potere normativo, che si sostanzia alle volte in un regolamento indipendente, altre in un regolamento simile ai regolamenti delegati ed altre al regolamento esecutivo. Poiché la legge n. 146 del 1990 prevede quali siano gli istituti idonei a realizzare il bilanciamento (preavviso, proclamazione scritta, procedure di raffreddamento e conciliazione, intervallo minimo, misure indicative delle prestazioni indispensabili), la provvisoria regolamentazione possiede i caratteri del regolamento esecutivo.

Chimäre Archonta? Vergleichend-morphologische Studien zur Hyolaryngealregion. Mit Brevia zur Dental- und Tarsalmorphologie. Die Dissertation greift aus phylogenetisch-systematischer Perspektive das Problem des Primatenursprungs auf. Traditionell wurde die Überordnung Archonta (= Primates + Scandentia + Dermoptera + Chiroptera) angenommen, die aufgrund molekularer Befunde nicht mehr als valide eingestuft wird. Eine Klassifikation anhand der Superordo Euarchontoglires (= Primates + Scandentia + Dermoptera + Glires) wird derzeit bevorzugt. Beide Verwandtschaftshypothesen werden in den taxonomischen Analysen berücksichtigt, um den potentiellen Einfluss der Außengruppenwahl auf die Konstellation der Euarchonta (= Primates + Dermoptera + Scandentia) zu bestimmen. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung liegt in der 3D-Rekonstruktion ontogenetischer Stadien der Hyolaryngealregion diverser Spezies der Ordnungen Artiodactyla, Chiroptera, Dermoptera, Primates, Rodentia, Scandentia und Soricomorpha. Mit AMIRA® 3.1.1 konnten basierend auf histologischen Schnittserien 18 dreidimensionale Modelle der überwiegend spätfetalen Zungenbein- und Kehlkopfregion dargestellt werden. Durch das Studium der Knorpelmorphologie und der Larynx-Myologie wurden 150 Merkmale definiert und in eine MacClade®-Datenmatrix überführt. Die auf dem Parsimonie-Prinzip basierenden PAUP®-Analysen sprechen für eine Schwestergruppenbeziehung der Primates und der Dermoptera (= Primatomorpha). Die als Chimäre titulierte Überordnung Archonta wurde als Vehikel verwendet, um die Integration der Chiropteren zu ermöglichen und die Hyolaryngealforschung zu intensivieren, da auch Echolot-Peilung verwendende Taxa Bestandteil der Untersuchung waren. Die morphologischen Ähnlichkeiten des Zungenbein- und Kehlkopfapparates zwischen der basalen Form Rousettus (Pteropodidae) und dem Dermoptera-Vertreter Cynocephalus wurden als symplesiomorphe Merkmale gedeutet. Bei der Außengruppenwahl eines Rodentia-Repräsentanten hingegen konnte in Übereinstimmung mit den molekularen Befunden und nach dem Gros der Lehrmeinung die Schwestergruppenbeziehung der Primates und der Sundatheria bestätigt werden. Zwecks eines umfassenderen Ansatzes wurden im Rahmen einer „total evidence“-Methodik dental- und tarsalmorphologische Merkmale integriert. Das Resultat der Clusteranalyse, basierend auf 263 Merkmalen, modifiziert das Zwischenergebnis und befürwortet in Übereinstimmung mit molekularen Daten als Schwestergruppe der Primaten das Taxon Sundatheria (= Dermoptera + Scandentia). Damit konnte erstmals mittels eines konsequenten phylogenetisch-systematischen Ansatzes der Primaten-Grundplan hinsichtlich der Merkmalsausstattung der Hyolaryngealregion mit 27 Merkmalen rekonstruiert werden. Der Primatenursprung kann mit dem Euarchonta-Grundplan rekonstruiert werden. Für die Sundatheria wurden 12 Grundplanmerkmale definiert
