The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Vision Statement, issued for consultation in July 2001, describes a long-term vision for the use of ICT in the Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS). Responses to the consultation strongly supported the Strategy Vision. The ICT Strategy for the HPSS is aimed at delivering the Vision. It is based on analysis of the current use of ICT in the service and consultation with service users, those directly involved in health and social care, and the Department for Health, Personal Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS / the Department). Developments under way and planned elsewhere, particularly in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, have been reviewed. Suppliers of ICT products and services were invited to present their perspectives on the future of ICT in health and social care. åÊ

The black flies of the genus Inaequalium present a Neotropical distribution, with Panama at the northern limit, and the Argentinian pampas at the southern, but do not occur in the Central Amazon. This study offers a cladistic analysis establishing a hypothesis of relationships between the species of Inaequalium. A total of 37 characters have been considered in order to establish the hypothetic phylogenetic relationships. Cerqueirellum (Py-Daniel, 1983) was considered as outgroup. Data were analyzed using Henning 86 version 1.5. Wich the ie* command and implicit enumeration a unique possible cladogram was obtained in Inaequalium with 52 steps, and a CI of 0.76 and RI of 0.81. Two well-defined clades was obtained in the resulting cladogram, the "botulibranchium" species-group, includes I. travassosi, I. souzalopesi, I. botulibranchium and I. petropoliense, and the "inaequale" species-group, includes I. rappae, I. nahimi, I. inaequale, I. leopoldense, I. subnigrum, I. diversibranchium, I. mariavulcanoae, I. nogueirai, I. beaupertuyi, I. clavibranchium and I. subclavibranchium.

Intercellular communication is achieved at specialized regions of the plasma membrane by¦gap junctions. Gap junctions are transmembrane channels allowing direct contacts between¦the cytoplasms of neighboring cells. Each cell participates with one hemichannel, or¦connexon, made of six protein subunits named connexins. Thanks to these junctions, cells¦potentially share a pool of small molecules and metabolites, such as nucleotides, amino acids¦and second messengers.¦In an ischemic (i.e. non-perfused) territory of the brain, irreversible damage progresses over¦time from the centre of the most severe flow reduction to the periphery with less disturbed¦perfusion. Functionally impaired tissue can survive and recover if sufficient reperfusion is reestablished¦within a limited time period, which depends on various factors and mechanisms¦modulating the signaling pathways leading to cell death.¦Observations were made indicating the presence of electrical coupling between neurons which¦resist better to an ischemic insult. This electrical coupling is likely to be mediated by¦Connexin36 (Cx36), a neuron specific connexin isoform. It was demonstrated in the past that¦global ischemia induces a selective upregulation of Cx36 expression in regions with neurons¦that survive the insult whereas others undergo apoptosis and die. These observations raise the¦possibility that the neuronal gap junction Cx36 might play a role in the destiny of neurons¦after cerebral ischemia.¦The aim of this work was to characterize the regulation of Connexin36 in a mouse model of¦transient focal cerebral ischemia by immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis. Our¦immunofluorescence results suggest a specific increase in Cx36 in the penumbral region of¦the ischemic hemisphere.

As Chairperson of the National Council on Ageing and Older People, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this report, Meeting the Health, Social Care and Welfare Services Information Needs of Older People in Ireland. The Council has asserted, in previous reports in the past, the need to improve information provision for older people in order to enable them to make informed decisions in relation to their health, social care and welfare services needs and preferences so that they can become partners in their own care. This is consistent with current policy initiatives intended to re-orientate services more towards the older person and to place him/her at the heart of service planning, delivery and evaluation. In this paper we present an empirical methodology that allows the tourist’s satisfaction gap between two destinations to be decomposed into two components. One explains the role of differences in observed characteristics of the tourists and the stay (endowments). The other captures the share of the gap due to differences in the utility that tourists derive from those characteristics (cognitive). To illustrate the use of this method, we employ data coming from a sample of tourists visiting two touristic enclaves in Tarragona (Spain). Our results indicate that the cognitive component explains most of the satisfaction gap. Keywords: Satisfaction, expectations, cognition, touristic destination
