Tetraoctyl-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine (OVPc4C8) as a new NIR-absorbing discotic liquid crystalline material can form highly ordered thin films with edge-on alignment of the molecules and molecular packing mode identical to that in the phase II of OVPc for solution processed OTFTs with mobility up to 0.017 cm(2) V-1 s(-1).

The rigid backbone of the poly(3-butylthiophene) molecule adopts a perpendicular orientation with respect to the substrate by using a solvent-vapor treatment (see figure). Small and closely contacting spherulites instead of conventional whisker-like crystals are achieved. This could be utilized to improve charge-carrier mobility particularly in the direction normal to the film plane by designing and constructing thick crystalline domains in the functional layer.

Electric-field-induced molecular alignments of side-chain liquid-crystalline polyacetylenes [-{HC=C[(CH2)(m)OCO-biph-OC7H15]}-, where biph is 4,4'-biphenylyl and m is 3 (PA3EO7) or 9 (PA9EO7)] were studied with X-ray diffraction and polarized optical microscopy. An orientation as high as 0.84 was obtained for PA9EO7. Furthermore, the molecular orientation of]PA9EO7 was achieved within a temperature range between the isotropic-to-smectic A transition temperature and 115 degreesC, and this suggested that the orientational packing was affected by the thermal fluctuation of the isotropic liquid and the mobility of the mesogenic moieties. The maximum achievable orientation for PA9EO7 was much greater than that for PA3EO7. This was the first time that the electric-field-induced molecular orientation of a side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer with a stiff backbone was studied.

Electronic structures of the heterojunction between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) were studied with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. Band bending and an interface dipole were observed at the interface due to the formation of an electron accumulation layer and a depletion layer in F16CuPc and CuPc, respectively. Such an energy level alignment leads to interesting ambipolar characteristics for application of the CuPc/F16CuPc junction in organic field-effect transistors.

The ordered double perovskites, Sr2-xLaxMnMoO6, were prepared by sol-gel reaction. Structural, magnetic, and electrical properties were investigated for a series of ordered double perovskites Sr2-xLaxMnMoO6(0 <= x <= 1). The compounds have a monoclinic structure (space group P2(1)/n) and the cell volume expands monotonically with La doping. The T-C and the magnetic moment rise and the cusp-like transition temperature below which the magnetic frustration occurs shifts to high temperature as x increases. With La doping, electrical resistivity of Sr2-xLaxMnMoO6 decreases only at low doping levels (x <= 0.2); while at high doping levels (0.8 <= x <= 1), electrical resistivity tends to increase greatly. The results suggest that the competition between band filling effect and steric effect coexists in the whole doping range, and the formation of ferrimagnetic interactions is not simply at the expense of antiferromagnetic interactions.

Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

The energy difference DeltaE between the spin-allowed and spin-forbidden states of Tb3+ in crystals is studied. The environmental factor he representing the character of the host is redefined by using the chemical band of complex crystals. The relationship between h(e) and DeltaE is found to be a linear relation. The results show that the energy difference between the spin-forbidden and spin-allowed states for Tb3+ ions in crystals can be predicted from the environmental factor.

Alignment films prepared from low molar mass photo-crosslinkable materials containing the cinnamate group can be used for aligning LCs after irradiating the films with linearly polarized UV light. The high contrast observed in the polarizing optical microscope between dark and bright images indicates that the alignment is quite uniform. As the photoreaction progresses. the average roughness of the films is increased. All the aggregate structures, 'lamellar crystals'. produced by the photo-crosslinking reaction are of a square shape.

The effect of lanthanum ions on the activity of the cytoplasmic domain of human erythrocyte band 3 (CDB3), which was measured according to the inhibition to aldolase, was studied. In the presence of low concentration of lanthanum ions, the function of CDB3 to inhibit aldolase activity decreased significantly. It indicated that lanthanum ions in the erythrocyte would change the conformation of CDB3 and influence the control on aldolase activity.

The shear-induced spiral-like morphology of a main-chain thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) is observed and characterized by means of polarizing light microscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction techniques. The spiral-like texture is formed during shearing in the temperature range of liquid crystalline to isotropic transition (335-340 degreesC), and dispersed discontinuously in the mosaic matrix. Electron diffraction results indicate that the spiral exhibits orthorhombic lateral packing of the crystals and homeotropic alignment of the molecules. The spiral formation process and possible affecting factors are discussed.

A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The influence of muffin-tin approximation on energy band gap was studied using LMTO-ASA (Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital-Atomic Sphere Approximation) approach. Since the diverse data are available for LaX(X=N, P, As, Sb), they are presented in our research as an example in order to test the reliability of our results. Four groups of muffin-tin radii were chosen, they were the fitted muffin-tin radii based on the optical properties of the crystals (the first), 1 : 1 for La : X(the second), 1.5 : 1 for La : X(the third), and a group of radii derived by making the charge in the interstitial space to be zero(the fourth). The results show that the fitted muffin-tin radii (the first group) give the best results compared with experimental values, and the predicted energy band gaps are very sensitive to the choice of muffin-tin radius in comparison with the other groups. The second and the third delivered results somewhere in between, while the fourth provided the worst results compared with the other groups. For the same crystal, with the increase of muffin-tin radius of lanthanum, the calculated energy band gaps decreased, going from semi-conductor to semimetal. This again clearly indicated the sensitivity of energy band structure on muffin-tin approximation.

The energy band structures of LaX(X=N, P, As, Sb) crystals have been studied by using LMTO-ASA method. The calculated energy gaps of these crystals are 2. 30 eV for LaN, 2. 05 eV for LaP, 1. 66 eV for LaAs and 1. 34 eV for LaSb. The results are in good agreement with experimental data, At the same time, using these calculated results of energy band structures of these crystals, the chemical bond properties have been analyzed and calculated, The covalency values of these crystals are 26.15% for LaN, 32.54% for LaP, 33.30% for LaAs and 36.49% for LaSb, which agree satisfactorily with the calculated ones by using PV (Phillips-Vechten) theory.

Copper phthalocyanine doped polymethacrylate Langmuir-Blodgett films were transferred to align a nematic liquid crystal 5CB, It is found that the pre-tilt angle of the liquid crystal can be controlled with the variation of the doped copper phthalocyanine molecular ratio and is correlated with the dichroic ratio of the aligning layer. The polarity of the aligning layer is regarded as the most likely underlying factor that causes the different LC alignment configurations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

A series of liquid crystalline copolymers, poly{2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(S-2-methyl-1-butyloxycarbonylphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} with an azobenzene moiety as photoreactive mesogenic unit, was prepared and investigated by using DSC, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that these polymers exhibit smectic phases. Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films of these copolymers were successfully deposited onto calcium fluoride and quartz. Reversible homeotropic and planar liquid crystal alignments were induced by using the photochromism of the LB films of one of the copolymers containing 20.6 mol % of the azo unit.
