This article explores the definition of ‘vintage cinema’ and specifically re-evaluates the fetishism for the past and its regurgitation in the present by providing a taxonomy of the phenomenon in recent film production. Our contribution identifies three aesthetic categories: the faux-vintage, the retro and the anachronistic and by illustrating their overlapping and discrepancies, it argues that the past remains a powerful negotiator of meaning for the present and the future. Drawing on studies of memory and digital nostalgia, this article focuses on the latter category: anachronism and unravel the persistence of and the filmic fascination for obsolete analogue objects through an analysis of Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch, 2013).

Abstract: Psychometric properties of two self-report clinical competence scales for nursing students.
Background: It is important to assess the clinical competence of nursing students to gauge their professional development and educational needs. This can be measured by self-assessment tools. Anema and McCoy (2010) contended that the currently available measures need further psychometric testing.
Aim: To test the psychometric properties of Nursing Competencies Questionnaire (NCQ) and Self-Efficacy in Clinical Performance (SECP) clinical competence scales.

Method: A non-randomly selected sample of n=248 2nd year nursing students completed NCQ, SECP and demographic questionnaires (June and September 2013). Mokken Scaling Analysis (MSA) was used to test the structural validity and scale properties, convergent and discriminant validity and reliability were subsequently tested.

Results: The NCQ provided evidence of a unidimensional scale which had strong scale scalability coefficients Hs =0.581; but limited evidence of item rankability HT =0.367. MSA undertaken with the SECP scale identified two potential unidimensional scales the SECP28 and SECP7, each with adequate evidence of good/reasonable scalablity psychometric properties as a summed scale but no/very limited evidence of scale rankability (SECP28: Hs = 0.55, HT=0.211; SECP7: Hs = 0.61, HT=0.049). Analysis of between cohort differences and NCQ/ SECP scale scores produced evidence of convergent and discriminant validity and good internal reliability: NCQ α = 0.93, SECP28 α = 0.96, and SECP7 α=0.89.

Discussion: The NCQ was verified to have evidence of reliability and validity; however, as the SECP findings are new, and the sample small, with reference to Straat and colleagues (2014), the SECP results should be interpreted with caution and verified on a second sample.

Conclusions: Measurement of perceived self-competence could inform the development of nursing competence and could start early in a nursing programme. Further testing of the NCQ and SECP scales with larger samples and from different years is indicated.

Background: Oncogenic mutations in BRAF occur in 8% of patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) and have been shown to correlate with poor prognosis. In contrast to BRAF mutant (MT) melanoma, where the BRAF inhibitor PLX4032 has shown significant increases in response rates and overall survival compared to standard Dacarbazine treatment, only minor responses to PLX4032 treatment have been reported in BRAFMT CRC. Clear understanding of the vulnerabilities of BRAFMT CRC is important, and identification of druggable targets uniquely required by BRAFMT CRC tumors has the potential to fill a gap in the therapeutic armamentarium of advanced CRC. The aim of this study was to identify novel resistance mechanisms to MAPK inhibition in BRAFMT CRC.

Methods: Paired BRAFMT/WT RKO and VACO432 CRC cell line models and non-isogenic BRAFMT LIM2405, WiDR and COLO205 CRC cells were used. Changes in protein expression/activity were assessed by Western Blotting. Interaction between MEK1/2 and JAK1/2 inhibition was assessed using the MTT cell viability assays and flow cytometry. Apoptosis was measured using Western blotting for PARP, cleaved caspase 3/8 and caspase 8, 3/7 activity assays.

Results: Treatment with MEK1/2 inhibitors AZD6244, GSK1120212, UO126 and PD98059 resulted in acute increases in STAT3 activity in the BRAFMT RKO and VACO432 cells but not in their BRAFWT clones and this was associated with increases in JAK2 activity. Inhibition of JAK/STAT3 activation using gene specific siRNA or small molecule inhibitors TG101348 or AZD1480, abrogated this survival response and resulted in significant increases in cell death when combined with MEK1/2 inhibitors AZD6244 or GSK1120212 in BRAFMT CRC cells. In addition, combination of MEK1/2 and JAK/STAT3 inhibition resulted in strong synergy with CI values between 0.3 and 0.7 in BRAFMT CRC cells.

Conclusions: We have identified JAK/STAT3 activation as an important escape mechanism for BRAFMT CRC following MEK1/2 inhibition. These data provide a strong rationale for further investigation of combination of MEK1/2 and JAK/STAT3 inhibition in BRAFMT in vivo models.

A 16mm moving image work and expanded cinema performance co-commissioned by Tate Modern and Arnolfini. Shot at the post-production facilities of Pinewood studios, London, the close-up sequences feature abstract patterns of optical sound encoded as light, printed onto the soundtrack area of the filmstrip. The film features the quivering light of a 16mm mono and a 35mm stereo optical sound camera, providing a seismic glimpse at a sound-wave in formation, on occasions flashing like a stroboscopic Rorschach inkblot. Chromatic Aberration is a film installation which explores the early technologies of colour filmmaking drawn from the archives of George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. Featuring vibrant close-ups of eyes from fledgling archival experiments in colour film, Chromatic Aberration turns the cinematic lens in on itself: from the prosthetic recording eye of the camera, to an evocation of the abstract inner screen of one's eyelids. Early 1920s colour film footage - mainly tests shots featuring members of George Eastman's family as well as Hollywood stars of the time - is shot in such a way so as to reveal the inherent chromatic fringing, distortion and misalignment. Using specialist equipment at the BFI National Archive, London, the footage is reworked through the use of extreme close-up and magnification, honing in on the eyes. The installation evokes an imagined abstract colour world, a flickering eyelid trapped in a mechanical peephole. This article outlines the approaches to modeling the distribution of threatened invertebrates using data from atlases, museums and databases. Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are useful for estimating species’ ranges, identifying suitable habitats, and identifying the primary factors affecting species’ distributions. The study tackles the strategies used to obtain SDMs without reliable absence data while exploring their applications for conservation. I examine the conservation status of Copris species and Graellsia isabelae by delimiting their populations and exploring the effectiveness of protected areas. I show that the method of pseudo‐absence selection strongly determines the model obtained, generating different model predictions along the gradient between potential and realized distributions. After assessing the effects of species’ traits and data characteristics on accuracy, I found that species are modeled more accurately when sample sizes are larger, no matter the technique used.

A presente dissertação discute o diálogo estabelecido entre literatura e cinema no tratamento da personagem principal – um homem traído que se vinga de forma cruel dos seus inimigos – na obra literária Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, de Alexandre Dumas, e nas três adaptações fílmicas escolhidas: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo de Robert Vernay (1943); The count of Monte Cristo de David Greene (1975) e The count of Monte Cristo de Kevin Reynolds (2002). O projecto centra-se na análise da personagem Edmond Dantès/Monte-Cristo na obra literária e na sua transposição para a obra fílmica, nos graus de adaptação e contaminação entre os diferentes textos em momentos temporais diferentes. Para isso, foram estudadas em pormenor cada uma das obras referidas, tendo sempre em vista o percurso do herói. A adaptação cinematográfica de uma obra literária é uma operação de criação de um novo texto com dinamismo e autonomia próprios, resultante de escolhas nem sempre fáceis de realizar. A grande extensão da obra literária dificultou essa tarefa, no entanto, os realizadores procuraram constituir um fluir de personagens e de situações enquadráveis num tempo ideal de visualização confortável. Todas as narrativas combinam romance e desilusão, acção e aventura, mas os temas da vingança e da traição são explorados numa perspectiva diferente. As conclusões apuradas constatam que, independentemente da época, a personagem descrita nos filmes manteve-se fiel à caracterização feita pelo seu criador Alexandre Dumas, apesar de algumas nuances necessárias para criar um objecto que garantisse reconhecimento da crítica mas, também, o sucesso comercial.
