We study the mean-first-passage-time problem for systems driven by the coin-toss square-wave signal. Exact analytic solutions are obtained for the driftless case. We also obtain approximate solutions for the potential case. The mean-first-passage time exhibits discontinuities and a remarkable nonsmooth oscillatory behavior which, to our knowledge, has not been observed for other kinds of driving noise.

Numerous sources of evidence point to the fact that heterogeneity within the Earth's deep crystalline crust is complex and hence may be best described through stochastic rather than deterministic approaches. As seismic reflection imaging arguably offers the best means of sampling deep crustal rocks in situ, much interest has been expressed in using such data to characterize the stochastic nature of crustal heterogeneity. Previous work on this problem has shown that the spatial statistics of seismic reflection data are indeed related to those of the underlying heterogeneous seismic velocity distribution. As of yet, however, the nature of this relationship has remained elusive due to the fact that most of the work was either strictly empirical or based on incorrect methodological approaches. Here, we introduce a conceptual model, based on the assumption of weak scattering, that allows us to quantitatively link the second-order statistics of a 2-D seismic velocity distribution with those of the corresponding processed and depth-migrated seismic reflection image. We then perform a sensitivity study in order to investigate what information regarding the stochastic model parameters describing crustal velocity heterogeneity might potentially be recovered from the statistics of a seismic reflection image using this model. Finally, we present a Monte Carlo inversion strategy to estimate these parameters and we show examples of its application at two different source frequencies and using two different sets of prior information. Our results indicate that the inverse problem is inherently non-unique and that many different combinations of the vertical and lateral correlation lengths describing the velocity heterogeneity can yield seismic images with the same 2-D autocorrelation structure. The ratio of all of these possible combinations of vertical and lateral correlation lengths, however, remains roughly constant which indicates that, without additional prior information, the aspect ratio is the only parameter describing the stochastic seismic velocity structure that can be reliably recovered.

The slow-phase velocity of nystagmus is one of the most sensitive parameters of vestibular function and is currently the standard for evaluating the caloric test. However, the assessment of this parameter requires recording the response by using nystagmography. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether frequency and duration of the caloric nystagmus, as measured by using a clinical test with Frenzel glasses, could predict the result of the recorded test. The retrospective analysis of 222 caloric test results recorded by means of electronystagmography has shown a good association between the 3 parameters for unilateral weakness. The asymmetry observed in the velocity can be predicted by a combination of frequency and duration. On the other hand, no relationship was observed between the parameters for directional preponderance. These results indicate that a clinical caloric test with frequency and duration as parameters can be used to predict the unilateral weakness, which would be obtained by use of nystagmography. We propose an evaluation of the caloric test on the basis of diagrams combining the 3 response parameters.

Purpose To investigate the differences in viscoelastic properties between normal and pathologic Achilles tendons ( AT Achilles tendon s) by using real-time shear-wave elastography ( SWE shear-wave elastography ). Materials and Methods The institutional review board approved this study, and written informed consent was obtained from 25 symptomatic patients and 80 volunteers. One hundred eighty ultrasonographic (US) and SWE shear-wave elastography studies of AT Achilles tendon s without tendonopathy and 30 studies of the middle portion of the AT Achilles tendon in patients with tendonopathy were assessed prospectively. Each study included data sets acquired at B-mode US (tendon morphology and cross-sectional area) and SWE shear-wave elastography (axial and sagittal mean velocity and relative anisotropic coefficient) for two passively mobilized ankle positions. The presence of AT Achilles tendon tears at B-mode US and signal-void areas at SWE shear-wave elastography were noted. Results Significantly lower mean velocity was shown in tendons with tendonopathy than in normal tendons in the relaxed position at axial SWE shear-wave elastography (P < .001) and in the stretched position at sagittal (P < .001) and axial (P = .0026) SWE shear-wave elastography . Tendon softening was a sign of tendonopathy in relaxed AT Achilles tendon s when the mean velocity was less than or equal to 4.06 m · sec(-1) at axial SWE shear-wave elastography (sensitivity, 54.2%; 95% confidence interval [ CI confidence interval ]: 32.8, 74.4; specificity, 91.5%; 95% CI confidence interval : 86.3, 95.1) and less than or equal to 5.70 m · sec(-1) at sagittal SWE shear-wave elastography (sensitivity, 41.7%; 95% CI confidence interval : 22.1, 63.3; specificity, 81.8%; 95% CI confidence interval : 75.3, 87.2) and in stretched AT Achilles tendon s, when the mean velocity was less than or equal to 4.86 m · sec(-1) at axial SWE shear-wave elastography (sensitivity, 66.7%; 95% CI confidence interval : 44.7, 84.3; specificity, 75.6%; 95% CI confidence interval : 68.5, 81.7) and less than or equal to 14.58 m · sec(-1) at sagittal SWE shear-wave elastography (sensitivity, 58.3%; 95% CI confidence interval : 36.7, 77.9; specificity, 83.5%; 95% CI confidence interval : 77.2, 88.7). Anisotropic results were not significantly different between normal and pathologic AT Achilles tendon s. Six of six (100%) partial-thickness tears appeared as signal-void areas at SWE shear-wave elastography . Conclusion Whether the AT Achilles tendon was relaxed or stretched, SWE shear-wave elastography helped to confirm and quantify pathologic tendon softening in patients with tendonopathy in the midportion of the AT Achilles tendon and did not reveal modifications of viscoelastic anisotropy in the tendon. Tendon softening assessed by using SWE shear-wave elastography appeared to be highly specific, but sensitivity was relatively low. © RSNA, 2014.

This paper estimates a model of airline competition for the Spanish air transport market. I test the explanatory power of alternative oligopoly models with capacity constraints. In addition, I analyse the degree of density economies. Results show that Spanish airlines conduct follows a price-leadership scheme so that it is less competitive than the Cournot solution. I also find evidence that thin routes can be considered as natural monopolies

We present an analytic and numerical study of the effects of external fluctuations in active media. Our analytical methodology transforms the initial stochastic partial differential equations into an effective set of deterministic reaction-diffusion equations. As a result we are able to explain and make quantitative predictions on the systematic and constructive effects of the noise, for example, target patterns created out of noise and traveling or spiral waves sustained by noise. Our study includes the case of realistic noises with temporal and spatial structures.

Rotating scroll waves are dynamical spatiotemporal structures characteristic of three-dimensional active media. It is well known that, under low excitability conditions, scroll waves develop an intrinsically unstable dynamical regime that leads to a highly disorganized pattern of wave propagation. Such a ¿turbulent¿ state bears some resemblance to fibrillation states in cardiac tissue. We show here that this unstable regime can be controlled by using a spatially distributed random forcing superimposed on a control parameter of the system. Our results are obtained from numerical simulations but an explicit analytical argument that rationalizes our observations is also presented.

The propagation of an initially planar front is studied within the framework of the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction modulated by a smooth spatial variation of the local front velocity in the direction perpendicular to front propagation. Under this modulation, the wave front develops several fingers corresponding to the local maxima of the modulation function. After a transient, the wave front achieves a stationary shape that does not necessarily coincide with the one externally imposed by the modulation. Theoretical predictions for the selection criteria of fingers and steady-state velocity are experimentally validated.

We present an analysis of the M-O chemical bonding in the binary oxides MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and Al2O3 based on ab initio wave functions. The model used to represent the local environment of a metal cation in the bulk oxide is an MO6 cluster which also includes the effect of the lattice Madelung potential. The analysis of the wave functions for these clusters leads to the conclusion that all the alkaline-earth oxides must be regarded as highly ionic oxides; however, the ionic character of the oxides decreases as one goes from MgO, almost perfectly ionic, to BaO. In Al2O3 the ionic character is further reduced; however, even in this case, the departure from the ideal, fully ionic, model of Al3+ is not exceptionally large. These conclusions are based on three measures, a decomposition of the Mq+-Oq- interaction energy, the number of electrons associated to the oxygen ions as obtained from a projection operator technique, and the analysis of the cation core-level binding energies. The increasing covalent character along the series MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO is discussed in view of the existing theoretical models and experimental data.

The role of the bridging ligand on the effective Heisenberg coupling parameters is analyzed in detail. This analysis strongly suggests that the ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations are responsible for a large part of the final value of the magnetic coupling constant. This permits us to suggest a variant of the difference dedicated configuration interaction (DDCI) method, presently one of the most accurate and reliable for the evaluation of magnetic effective interactions. This method treats the bridging ligand orbitals mediating the interaction at the same level than the magnetic orbitals and preserves the high quality of the DDCI results while being much less computationally demanding. The numerical accuracy of the new approach is illustrated on various systems with one or two magnetic electrons per magnetic center. The fact that accurate results can be obtained using a rather reduced configuration interaction space opens the possibility to study more complex systems with many magnetic centers and/or many electrons per center.
