Addition of boron in small quantities to various titanium alloys have shown significant improvement in mechanical behavior of materials. In the present study, electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformation microstructure evolution in boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) s(-1) and 1 s(-1)). The EBSD analyses indicated significant differences in deformed microstructure of the base alloy and the alloy containing boron. A strong subgrain formation tendency was observed along with inhomogeneous distribution of dislocations inside large a colonies of Ti64. In contrast, a colonies were relatively strain free for Ti64 + B, with more uniform dislocation density distribution. The observed difference is attributed to microstructural modifications viz, grain size refinement and presence of TiB particles at grain boundary produced due to boron addition. Polystyrene/multiwall carbon nanotube composite films are prepared with loading up to 7 weight percent (wt%) of multiwall carbon nanotubes by solution processing and casting technique. In the formation of these composite films, iron filled carbon nanotubes with high aspect ratio (similar to 4000) were used. Scanning electron microscopy study shows that the nanotubes are uniformly dispersed within the polymer matrix. At high magnification, bending of carbon nanotubes is noticed which can be attributed to their elastic properties. The electrical conductivity measurements show that the percolation threshold is rather low at 0.21 wt%. Hysteresis loop measurements on the bulk multiwall carbon nanotube and composite samples are done at 10, 150 and 300 K and the coercivity values are found to be largest at all the temperatures, for 1 wt% composite sample. Fractal Dimensions (FD) are one of the popular measures used for characterizing signals. They have been used as complexity measures of signals in various fields including speech and biomedical applications. However, proper interpretation of such analyses has not been thoroughly addressed. In this paper, we study the effect of various signal properties on FD and interpret results in terms of classical signal processing concepts such as amplitude, frequency, number of harmonics, noise power and signal bandwidth. We have used Higuchi's method for estimating FDs. This study may help in gaining a better understanding of the FD complexity measure itself, and for interpreting changing structural complexity of signals in terms of FD. Our results indicate that FD is a useful measure in quantifying structural changes in signal properties.

Research on conducting polymers, organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells has been an exciting field for the past decade. The challenge with these organic devices is the long term stability of the active material. Organic materials are susceptible to chemical degradation in the presence of oxygen and moisture. The sensitivity of these materials towards oxygen and moisture makes it imperative to protect them by encapsulation. Polymer nanocomposites can be used as encapsulation materials in order to prevent material degradation. In the present work, amine functionalized alumina was used as a cross-linking and reinforcing material for the polymer matrix in order to fabricate the composites to be used for encapsulation of devices. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to elucidate the surface chemistry. Thermogravimetric analysis techniques and CHN analysis were used to quantify grafting density of amine groups over the surface of the nanoparticles. Mechanical characterizations of the composites with various loadings were carried out with dynamic mechanical analyzer. It was observed that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility, which are important for an encapsulant. The morphology of the composites was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

3-Hydroxybenzoic acid-6-hydroxylase from Micrococcus sp. was purified to homogeneity in a single step using the substrate-mediated interaction of the enzyme with blue-Sepharose. The enzyme was bound to the affinity matrix in the presence of 3-hydroxybenzoic acid and was eluted in its absence. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme is 70,000 with no subunit structure. The flavoenzyme required the exogenous addition of FAD for its complete activity and had a strict preference for NADH over NADPH. The activity of the enzyme was drastically inhibited by Cu2+ and Hg2+ and the inhibition was reversed by thiol reagents.

Spherical and rod like nanocrystalline Nd2O3 phosphors have been prepared by solution combustion and hydrothermal methods respectively The Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results confirm that hexagonal A-type Nd2O3 has been obtained with calcination at 900 C for 3 h and the lattice parameters have been evaluated by Rietveld refinement Surface morphology of Nd2O3 phosphors show the formation of nanorods in hydrothermal synthesis whereas spherical particles in combustion method TEM results also confirm the same Raman studies show major peaks which are assigned to F-g and combination of A(g) + E-g modes The PL spectrum shows a series of emission bands at similar to 326-373 nm (UV) 421-485 nm (blue) 529-542 nm (green) and 622 nm (red) The UV blue green and red emission in the PL spectrum indicates that Nd2O3 nanocrystals are promising for high performance materials and white light emitting diodes (LEDs) (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

A protein which binds specifically to [3H]-zeatin has been isolated from cucumber cotyledons by chromatographic techniques. Its binding to [3H]-zeatin was inhibited remarkably by the addition of non-radioactive cytokinins and the order of inhibition was zeatin > -zeatin riboside > N6-(Delta2-isopentenyl)adenine > N6-(Delta2-isopentenyl)adenosine > N6-benzyl-adenosine > kinetin riboside. This protein behaved as a soluble protein with an apparent molecular size of 43,000 daltons on gel filtration through calibrated Sephadex G-100 column. The dissociation constant, Kd, of the protein-zeatin complex was about 4 × 10–7 M.
