Extração seriada: considerações clínicas

The early malocclusion treatment has increased interest of orthodontic community. Among these is the serial extraction that harmonizes the differences between the amount of dental material and permanent deficiency of supporting bone. The technique is applied in mixed dentition through a predetermined sequence of extractions between deciduous and permanent teeth, in order to reach spontaneous immediately alignment of remaining permanent teeth with a minimum orthodontic mechanics. It will be reported a case where the serial extraction was performed in a growing patient with biprotrusion, Class I malocclusion and severe crowding. All functional and aesthetics goals were reached.

Meaw modificado: apresentação da técnica para correção das mordidas abertas e na finalização dos tratamentos ortodônticos

This study presents a new treatment technique, that uses TMA archwires with standardized curvatures, associated to intermaxillary elastics, that can do both offer satisfactory results in short period of the treatment time in the open bites cases and in the finishing procedures of the orthodontic treatment.

Modificação de forma e dimensões dos arcos superior e inferior obtidas em modelos de estudo após expansão rápida da maxila com o aparelho hyrax

The aim of an orthodontic treatment is the achievement of a balanced, esthetic and, most of all, stable, intra and inter arches relationship. A common problem observed in occlusion is posterior crossbite and atresic maxilla. This problem may be treated by slow expansion, rapid expansion or surgically assisted expansion. For the present study cast models of 14 children between 7 and 11 years old were evaluated. There were 7 male and 7 female subjects that presented posterior crossbite and needed rapid maxillary expansion. The Hyrax appliance performed the therapy for correction of this transversal alteration, which is a common possibility in the treatment of this malocclusion. It was observed that the distance between the upper first molars and upper cuspids increased significantly; the length of the upper arch decreased and its perimeter increased significantly. At the lower arch there were no dimensional changes.

Parâmetros de força ideal aplicada aos principais movimenetos ortodônticos

The orthodontic movement is a result of the system of forces application and it depends on the response of periodontal tissues to this system. The forces must have a magnitude considered ideal, to has maximum response of tissue without pain or root resorption, and keep the health of the periodontal ligament, during all the tooth movement. Therefore, it seems adequate by means of an available literature to estimate parameters of ideal force, for different types of movements; with intention of assisting the orthodontists in optimum control of the tooth movement and thus to diminish the possibility to generate deleterious effects.

Sistema Essix MTM: uma alternativa estética para a movimentação

The increased interest in orthodontics by adults has led companies to develop new treatment alternatives that use less visible and more aesthetic orthodontic appliances. The aesthetic aligners stand out among the treatment options that attend these expectations. This paper presented some relevant aspects of these devices, as well as two cases treated with Essix MTM (Dentsply) system, in which all aesthetic and functional objectives proposed treatment have been achieved. The results of this study support the idea that, when properly indicated, aesthetic aligners are a viable treatment option within the clinical routine of the orthodontist.

Tratamento da má-oclusão de classe II divisão 1 de Angle, com aparelho de Herbst splint metálico seguido de aparelho fixo, na dentição permanente

The Herbst appliance is currently one of the most used appliances for the correction of Class II division 1 with mandibular retrusion. When used in peak, or just after the peak of growth it can result in some skeletal gain, which is favorable to the correction of anteroposterior discrepancy with effective and stable results. This article aims to report a case of a patient with malocclusion Class II division 1 with mandibular retrusion, associated with maxillary protusion, treated in two stages: with Herbst splint metallic appliance followed by fixed appliance orthodontic treatment.

Bite block is a functional orthodontic appliance that promotes relative intrusion or dental eruption inhibition. The purpose of this study is to present the effects of bite block on the treatment of an open bite case report.

Following the introduction of the acid-etching technique in enamel surface, direct attachment of orthodontic appliances on the surface of the tooth and/or restorations became a routine procedure in the assembly of the fixed devices. The attainment of a success result is related to the criterion attention to the details and the steps of the bonding technique, as well as, to the knowledge of the characteristics of the adhesive materials and orthodontic brackets. This paper presents some aspects of various types of brackets and adhesives materials.

The orthodontic set-up is an important resource in the planning of corrective orthodontics therapy. It consists of the repositioning of the teeth previously removed from the study dental casts and reassembled on its remaining basis. When properly made, the set-up allows a three-dimensional preview of problems and limitations of the case, assisting in decision-making regarding tooth extractions in cases with problems of space, amount of anchorage loss extent and type of tooth movement, discrepancy of dental arch perimeter, discrepancy of inter-arch tooth volume, among others, indicating the best option for treatment. This paper outlines the most important steps for its confection, an evaluation system and its application in the preparation of orthodontic treatment planning.

Descrição do aparelho VABB (Vertically Activated Bite Block) para o tratamento da mordida aberta anterior

Nowadays, the correction of skeletal vertical dysplasia is considered a great challenge in Orthodontics. The skeletal open bite treatment presents limitations related to vertical growth pattern, the extension of open bite and especially the stability, which is very questioned. The treatment of skeletal open bite is mostly realized by the inhibition of vertical alveolar posterior development (relative intrusion) or absolute intrusion of posterior teeth, through vertical forces, generated by the action of masticatory muscles. The purpose of this article is to present a new appliance for the treatment of skeletal open bite, the VABB (Vertically Activated Bite Block) or modified Bite Block, whose action mechanism is to limit the vertical development of the molars, by the action of facial muscles and two bilateral expansion screws that provide a counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. It will also be presented a clinical case and the technical steps for the construction of this appliance.

Ertty System®: distalização segmentar

Introduction: Ertty System® is an intraoral system of biomechanical forces to move teeth anteroposteriorly. The application of forces on this system results in the distalization of the molar and all lateral segment in the side to be distalized, including premolars and canine, resulting in alveolar bone remodeling. This system is indicated to correct uni- or bilateral maxillary dental Class II malocclusion in permanent dentition both in children and adults. It is contraindicated in case of skeletal asymmetries, protrusion of maxillary and mandibular teeth, skeletal Class II and Class II subdivision malocclusions with mandibular midline deviation. This study describes Ertty System® and presents two clinical cases treated using this system. The two female patients presented with Class II malocclusion subdivision and maxillary midline deviation. Results: It was achieved correct alignment and leveling, Class I dental relation and correction of upper midline. Conclusion: The success and stability of results confirmed diagnosis and treatment adequacy.

Integração ortodontia e dermatologia na busca da excelência na estética bucal

In recent years the number of adult Patients who seek esthetic treatments has increased. Among the patients main concern, lip augmentation has increased, and this procedure has been very well performed and studied by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Although Orthodontics can achieve good esthetic results through teeth and jaw proper positioning it is a time consuming approach and it discloses some anatomical and biological limitations. Dermatology may be an excellent alternative to enhance orthodontic results through lip augmentation. The aim of this paper is to discuss some dermatology techniques currently available to augment the lips as well as describe a case report highlighting the need for interdisciplinary approach to enhance facial esthetics goals.

Necessidade de ancoragem do grupo A e o controle biomecanico da mola T pré-ativada por curvatura para o fechamento de espacos

Contemporary orthodontics has sought, beyond the esthetic, occlusal and functional goals, treatments even faster and with less visits to the orthodontist — especially in patients that require dental extractions in which the generated space becomes a nuisance. The segmented arch technic (SAT), by the use of a "T" loop spring, has provided such results within these requirements. Therefore, this study aimed to appraise and demonstrate the confection, activation and biomechanical control of "T" loop spring, in the group with high anchorage necessity (group A), for retraction of anterior teeth; as well as to present a case report, with high anterior retraction necessity, treated with "T" loop spring.
