Mechanical actuator for biomimetic propulsion and the effect of the caudal fin elasticity on the swimming performance

This paper presents a mechanical actuator for the biomimetic propulsion of swimming devices and the experimental study of the effect of the caudal fin elasticity on the overall performance. The design of the proposed drive allows the DC motor to operate at constant speed, so all the power of the motor is spent only for the motion of the caudal fin. A prototype of the actuator, in which the caudal fin serves as a driving element, is manufactured and tested in both laboratory and natural conditions. The swimming speed, the thrust efficiency and the maneuverability are evaluated for caudal fins with different stiffness. The caudal fin whose rigidity varies relative to both vertical and horizontal cross-section, exhibits the best performance. The achieved results also confirm that the proposed actuator could be of great interest to applications in the field of underwater operation, ocean investigation and environmental protection.

The neuroprotective effect of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide on cerebellar granule cells is mediated through inhibition of the CED3-related cysteine protease caspase-3/CPP32

Caspase-3 knockout mice exhibit thickening of the internal granule cell layer of the cerebellum. Concurrently, it has been shown that intracerebral injection of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) induces a transient increase of the thickness of the cerebellar cortex. In the present study, we have investigated the possible effect of PACAP on caspase activity in cultured cerebellar granule cells from 8-day-old rat. Incubation of granule neurons with PACAP for 24 h promoted cell survival and prevented DNA fragmentation. Exposure of cerebellar granule cells to the specific caspase-3 inhibitor N-benzyloxycarbonyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp fluoromethylketone (Z-DEVD-FMK) for 24 h markedly enhanced cell survival and inhibited apoptotic cell death. Time-course studies revealed that PACAP causes a prolonged inhibition of caspase-3 activity without affecting caspase-1. Administration of graded concentrations of PACAP for 3 h induced a dose-dependent inhibition of caspase-3 activity. Incubation of granule cells with both dibutyryl-cAMP (dbcAMP) and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) mimicked the inhibitory effect of PACAP on caspase-3. Cotreatment of cultured neurons with the protein kinase A inhibitor H89 and the protein kinase C inhibitor chelerythrine abrogated the effect of PACAP on caspase-3 activity. In contrast, the ERK kinase inhibitor U0126 did not affect the action of PACAP on caspase-3 activity. These data demonstrate that PACAP prevents cerebellar granule neurons from apoptotic cell death through a protein kinase A- and protein kinase C-dependent inhibition of caspase-3 activity.

Deforming semistable Galois representations

Let V be a p-adic representation of Gal(Q̄/Q). One of the ideas of Wiles’s proof of FLT is that, if V is the representation associated to a suitable autromorphic form (a modular form in his case) and if V′ is another p-adic representation of Gal(Q̄/Q) “closed enough” to V, then V′ is also associated to an automorphic form. In this paper we discuss which kind of local condition at p one should require on V and V′ in order to be able to extend this part of Wiles’s methods.

Conformational changes of dissolved humic and fulvic superstructures with progressive iron complexation

Conformational changes of a humic acid (HA) and a fulvic acid (FA) induced by iron complexation were followed by high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) with both UV–vis and refractive index (RI) detectors. Molecular size distribution was reduced for HA and increased for FA with progressive iron complexation. Since interactions of Fe with humic components are electrostatic, it is likely that the triple-charged Fe ions formed stronger complexes with the more acidic hydrophilic and hydrated FA than with the less acidic and more hydrophobic HA. The large content of ionized carboxyl groups in FA, thus favored the formation of intra- or intermolecular bridges between the negatively charged fulvic acid molecules, and led to more compact and larger size network than for HA. Conversely, iron complexation with HA disrupted the humic conformational arrangements stabilized by only weak hydrophobic bonds into smaller-size aggregates of greater conformational stability due to formation of strong metal complexes. These results confirmed that humic molecules in solution were organized in supramolecular associations of relatively small molecules loosely bound together by dispersive interactions and hydrogen bonds, and they specifically responded to chemical changes brought about by metal additions. The present study revealed the molecular changes occurring in superstructures of natural organic matter when in metal complexes and contributed to understand and predict the environmental behavior in waters and soil of metal complexes with natural organic matter.

La conservación de los insectos en España, una cuestión no resuelta

Los insectos, el grupo de organismos vivos con la más alta biodiversidad conocida, agrupa el 55% de todas las especies descritas y se encuentran en todos los ecosistemas terrestres y de agua dulce donde ocupan una gran variedad de nichos, participando en todos los procesos ecológicos. Este grupo de animales presenta una alta diversidad de hábitos tróficos, pudiendo ser fitófagos, saprófagos, descomponedores, depredadores o parasitoides, siendo los principales responsables del reciclaje de más del 20% de la biomasa vegetal terrestre (Samways, 1994, 2005), y uno de los principales degradadores de restos de origen animal (Galante & Marcos-García, 2004a). Por otra parte, los insectos son imprescindibles como mantenedores y generadores de biodiversidad vegetal ya que más del 75% de las plantas con flores de todo el mundo dependen de la acción polinizadora de los insectos (Tepedino & Griwold, 1990; Fontaine et al., 2006).
