In the contemporary customer-driven supply chain, maximization of customer service plays an equally important role as minimization of costs for a company to retain and increase its competitiveness. This article develops a multiple-criteria optimization approach, combining the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and an integer linear programming (ILP) model, to aid the design of an optimal logistics distribution network. The proposed approach outperforms traditional cost-based optimization techniques because it considers both quantitative and qualitative factors and also aims at maximizing the benefits of deliverer and customers. In the approach, the AHP is used to determine the relative importance weightings or priorities of alternative warehouses with respect to some critical customer-oriented criteria. The results of AHP prioritization are utilized as the input of the ILP model, the objective of which is to select the best warehouses at the lowest possible cost. In this article, two commercial packages are used: including Expert Choice and LINDO.

Portfolio analysis exists, perhaps, as long, as people think about acceptance of rational decisions connected with use of the limited resources. However the occurrence moment of portfolio analysis can be dated precisely enough is having connected it with a publication of pioneer work of Harry Markovittz (Markovitz H. Portfolio Selection) in 1952. The model offered in this work, simple enough in essence, has allowed catching the basic features of the financial market, from the point of view of the investor, and has supplied the last with the tool for development of rational investment decisions. The central problem in Markovitz theory is the portfolio choice that is a set of operations. Thus in estimation, both separate operations and their portfolios two major factors are considered: profitableness and risk of operations and their portfolios. The risk thus receives a quantitative estimation. The account of mutual correlation dependences between profitablenesses of operations appears the essential moment in the theory. This account allows making effective diversification of portfolio, leading to essential decrease in risk of a portfolio in comparison with risk of the operations included in it. At last, the quantitative characteristic of the basic investment characteristics allows defining and solving a problem of a choice of an optimum portfolio in the form of a problem of quadratic optimization.

Through a lumped parameter modelling approach, a dynamical model, which can reproduce the motion of the muscles of a human body standing in different postures during Whole Body Vibrations (WBVs) treatment, has been developed. The key parameters, associated to the dynamics of the motion of the muscles of the lower limbs, have been identified starting from accelerometer measurements. The developed model can be usefully applied to the optimization of WBVs treatments which can effectively enhance muscle activation. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper the low autocorrelation binary sequence problem (LABSP) is modeled as a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem and proof of the model’s validity is given. Since the MIQP model is semidefinite, general optimization solvers can be used, and converge in a finite number of iterations. The experimental results show that IQP solvers, based on this MIQP formulation, are capable of optimally solving general/skew-symmetric LABSP instances of up to 30/51 elements in a moderate time. Real-time systems are usually modelled with timed automata and real-time requirements relating to the state durations of the system are often specifiable using Linear Duration Invariants, which is a decidable subclass of Duration Calculus formulas. Various algorithms have been developed to check timed automata or real-time automata for linear duration invariants, but each needs complicated preprocessing and exponential calculation. To the best of our knowledge, these algorithms have not been implemented. In this paper, we present an approximate model checking technique based on a genetic algorithm to check real-time automata for linear durration invariants in reasonable times. Genetic algorithm is a good optimization method when a problem needs massive computation and it works particularly well in our case because the fitness function which is derived from the linear duration invariant is linear. This article presents a laser tracker position optimization code based on the tracker uncertainty model developed by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The code is able to find the optimal tracker positions for generic measurements involving one or a network of many trackers, and an arbitrary set of targets. The optimization is performed using pattern search or optionally, genetic algorithm (GA) or particle swarm optimization (PSO). Different objective function weightings for the uncertainties of individual points, distance uncertainties between point pairs, and the angular uncertainties between three points can be defined. Constraints for tracker position limits and minimum measurement distances have also been implemented. Furthermore, position optimization taking into account of lines-of-sight (LOS) within complex CAD geometry have also been demonstrated. The code is simple to use and can be a valuable measurement planning tool.

We present a comprehensive study of power output characteristics of random distributed feedback Raman fiber lasers. The calculated optimal slope efficiency of the backward wave generation in the one-arm configuration is shown to be as high as ∼90% for 1 W threshold. Nevertheless, in real applications a presence of a small reflection at fiber ends can appreciably deteriorate the power performance. The developed numerical model well describes the experimental data. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

This paper presents a surrogate-model-based optimization of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) machine winding design for maximizing power yield. Based on site-specific wind profile data and the machine's previous operational performance, the DFIG's stator and rotor windings are optimized to match the maximum efficiency with operating conditions for rewinding purposes. The particle swarm optimization-based surrogate optimization techniques are used in conjunction with the finite element method to optimize the machine design utilizing the limited available information for the site-specific wind profile and generator operating conditions. A response surface method in the surrogate model is developed to formulate the design objectives and constraints. Besides, the machine tests and efficiency calculations follow IEEE standard 112-B. Numerical and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed technologies.

Insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power modules find widespread use in numerous power conversion applications where their reliability is of significant concern. Standard IGBT modules are fabricated for general-purpose applications while little has been designed for bespoke applications. However, conventional design of IGBTs can be improved by the multiobjective optimization technique. This paper proposes a novel design method to consider die-attachment solder failures induced by short power cycling and baseplate solder fatigue induced by the thermal cycling which are among major failure mechanisms of IGBTs. Thermal resistance is calculated analytically and the plastic work design is obtained with a high-fidelity finite-element model, which has been validated experimentally. The objective of minimizing the plastic work and constrain functions is formulated by the surrogate model. The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II is used to search for the Pareto-optimal solutions and the best design. The result of this combination generates an effective approach to optimize the physical structure of power electronic modules, taking account of historical environmental and operational conditions in the field.

Heat sinks are widely used for cooling electronic devices and systems. Their thermal performance is usually determined by the material, shape, and size of the heat sink. With the assistance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and surrogate-based optimization, heat sinks can be designed and optimized to achieve a high level of performance. In this paper, the design and optimization of a plate-fin-type heat sink cooled by impingement jet is presented. The flow and thermal fields are simulated using the CFD simulation; the thermal resistance of the heat sink is then estimated. A Kriging surrogate model is developed to approximate the objective function (thermal resistance) as a function of design variables. Surrogate-based optimization is implemented by adaptively adding infill points based on an integrated strategy of the minimum value, the maximum mean square error approach, and the expected improvement approaches. The results show the influence of design variables on the thermal resistance and give the optimal heat sink with lowest thermal resistance for given jet impingement conditions.

This paper analyzes the physical phenomena that take place inside an 1 kg/h bubbling fluidized bed reactor located at Aston University and presents a geometrically modified version of it, in order to improve certain hydrodynamic and gas flow characteristics. The bed uses, in its current operation, 40 L/min of N2 at 520 °C fed through a distributor plate and 15 L/min purge gas stream, i.e., N2 at 20 °C, via the feeding tube. The Eulerian model of FLUENT 6.3 is used for the simulation of the bed hydrodynamics, while the k - ε model accounts for the effect of the turbulence field of one phase on the other. The three-dimensional simulation of the current operation of the reactor showed that a stationary bubble was formed next to the feeding tube. The size of the permanent bubble reaches up to the splash zone of the reactor, without any fluidizaton taking place underneath the feeder. The gas flow dynamics in the freeboard of the reactor is also analyzed. A modified version of the reactor is presented, simulated, and analyzed, together with a discussion on the impact of the flow dynamics on the fast pyrolysis of biomass. © 2010 American Chemical Society.
