Materials used in current technological approaches for the removal of mercury lack selectivity. Given that this is one of the main features of supramolecular chemistry, receptors based on calix[4]arene and calix[4]resorcarene containing functional groups able to interact selectively with polluting ions while discriminating against biologically essential ones were designed. Thus two receptors, a partially functionalized calix[4]arene derivative, namely, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl [25-27-bis(diethyl thiophosphate amino)dihydroxy] calix[4]arene (1) and a fully functionalized calix[4]resorcarene, 4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-diethyl thiophosphate calix[4]resorcarene (2) are introduced. Mercury(II) was the identified target due to the environmental and health problems associated with its presence in water Thus following the synthesis and characterization of 1 and 2 in solution ((1)HNMR) and in the solid state (X-ray crystallography) the sequence of experimental events leading to cation complexation studies in acetonitrile and methanol ((1)H NMR, conductance, potentiometric, and calorimetric measurements) with the aim of assessing their behavior as mercury selective receptors are described. The cation selectivity pattern observed in acetonitrile follows the sequence Hg(II) > Cu(II) > Ag(I). In methanol 1 is also selective for Hg(II) relative to Ag(I) but no interaction takes place between this receptor and Cu(II) in this solvent. Based on previous results and experimental facts shown in this paper, it is concluded that the complexation observed with Cu(II) in acetonitrile occurs through the acetonitrile-receptor adduct rather than through the free ligand. Receptor 2 has an enhanced capacity for uptaking Hg(II) but forms metalate complexes with Cu(II). These studies in solution guided the inmobilization of receptor 1 into a silica support to produce a new and recyclable material for the removal of Hg(II) from water. An assessment on its capacity to extract this cation from water relative to Cu(II) and Ag (I) shows that the cation selectivity pattern of the inmobilized receptor is the same as that observed for the free receptor in methanol. These findings demonstrate that fundamental studies play a critical role in the selection of the receptor to be attached to silicates as well as in the reaction medium used for the synthesis of the new decontaminating agent.

2-Benzoylpyridine-phenylhydrazone (H2BzPh), 2-benzoylpyridine-para-chloro-phenylhydrazone (H2BzpClPh), and 2-benzoylpyridine-para-nitro-phenyl (H2BzpNO(2)Ph) hydrazone were obtained and fully characterized, as well as their zinc(II) complexes [Zn(H2BzPh)Cl(2)] (1), [Zn(H2BzClPh)Cl(2)] (2) and [Zn(H2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(2)] (3). During the syntheses of complex 1 a second product crystallized, which was characterized as [Zn(2BzPh)(2)] (1a). Upon re-crystallization in 1: 9 DMSO: acetone conversion of 2 into [Zn(H2BzpClPh)Cl2] center dot H(2)O (2a) and of 3 into [Zn(2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(DMSO)] (3a) occurred. The crystal structures of 1a, 2a and 3a were determined. In 1a the two nearly perpendicular H2BzPh ligands give rise to a distorted octahedral environment around the metal. The 5-fold coordination around the metal is completed with two chloride ions in 2a and with one chloride and one oxygen atom from DMSO in 3a. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure of the title compound, a promising ligand for chelatoterapies in the treatment of Alzheimer`s disease, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The compound crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4. The dimeric 8-quinolinol molecule is sited on a crystallographic twofold axis passing through the CH(2) carbon atom that links the symmetry related molecular halves, giving rise to a two-bladed propeller-like conformation. The (1)H and (13)C NMR as well as the IFT-IR and Raman spectra of the compound were also recorded and are briefly discussed. Some comparisons with spectra of related species are made. The synthesis, structural characterization, voltammetric experiments and antibacterial activity of [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] were studied and compared with similar previously reported copper complexes. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O crystallized in a monoclinic system, space group C2/c where the nickel ion was in a slightly distorted octahedral environment, coordinated with two sulfisoxazole molecules through the heterocyclic nitrogen and four water molecules. [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] crystallized in a orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pnab. The nickel ion was in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated by two aryl amine N from two sulfonamides acting as monodentate ligands and four N atoms (two sulfonamidic N and two heterocyclic N) from two different sulfonamide molecules acting as bidentate ligands. Differential pulse voltammograms were recorded showing irreversible peaks at 1040 and 1070 mV, respectively, attributed to Ni(II)/Ni(III) process. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] presented different antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the similar copper complexes and they were inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Several experiments (time-resolved Z-scan experiments based on pulsed and CW pump lasers, time-resolved divergence diagnostics) have been performed to examine and clarify the question of the converging or diverging population lensing effect occurring in a Cr(3+):Al(2)O(3) ruby laser. The dynamics of the laser far-field divergence of such a laser indeed indicated initially a diverging effect while Z-scan measurements conclude to a converging one. The origin of this discrepancy is thus analysed and elucidated here by introducing the general concept of correlation collapse between the centre and the wings of a laser beam having some clipping. Substrate inhibition by ATP is a regulatory feature of the phosphofructokinases isoenzymes from Escherichia coli (Pfk-1 and Pfk-2). Under gluconeogenic conditions, the loss of this regulation in Pfk-2 causes substrate cycling of fructose-6-phosphate (fructose-6-P) and futile consumption of ATP delaying growth. In the present work, we have broached the mechanism of ATP-induced inhibition of Pfk-2 from both structural and kinetic perspectives. The crystal structure of Pfk-2 in complex with fructose-6-P is reported to a resolution of 2 angstrom. The comparison of this structure with the previously reported inhibited form of the enzyme suggests a negative interplay between fructose-6-P binding and allosteric binding of MgATP. Initial velocity experiments show a linear increase of the apparent K(0.5) for fructose-6-P and a decrease in the apparent k(cat) as a function of MgATP concentration. These effects occur simultaneously with the induction of a sigmoidal kinetic behavior (n(H) of approximately 2). Differences and resemblances in the patterns of fructose-6-P binding and the mechanism of inhibition are discussed for Pfk-1 and Pfk-2, as an example of evolutionary convergence, because these enzymes do not share a common ancestor.

Fluorescent AlPO(4) xerogels doped with different amounts of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) laser dye were prepared by a one-step sal-gel process. In addition, mesoporous AlPO(4) glasses obtained from undoped gels were loaded with different amounts of Rh6G by wet impregnation. Optical excitation and emission spectra of both series of samples show significant dependences on Rh6G concentration, revealing the influence of dye molecular aggregation. At comparable dye concentrations the aggregation effects are found to be significantly stronger in the gels than in the mesoporous glasses. This effect might be attributed to stronger interactions between the dye molecules and the glass matrix, resulting in more efficient dye dispersion in the latter. The interaction of Rh6G with the glassy AlPO(4) network has been probed by (27)Al and (31)P solid-state NMR techniques. New five- and six-coordinated aluminum environments have been observed and characterized by advanced solid-state NMR techniques probing (27)Al-(1)H and (27)Al-(31)P internuclear dipole couplings. The fractional area of these new Al sites is correlated with the combined fractional area of two new Q(3Al)((0)) and Q(2Al)((0)) phosphate species observed in the (31)P MAS NMR spectra. Based on this correlation as well as detailed composition dependent studies, we suggest that the new signals arise from the breakage of Al-O-P linkages associated with the insertion process. Lectins have been classified into a structurally diverse group of proteins that bind carbohydrates and glycoconjugates with high specificity. They are extremely useful molecules in the characterization of saccharides, as drug delivery mediators, and even as cellular surface makers. In this study, we present camptosemin, a new lectin from Camptosema ellipticum. It was characterized as an N-acetyl-d-galactosamine-binding homo-tetrameric lectin, with a molecular weight around 26 kDa/monomers. The monomers were stable over a wide range of pH values and exhibited pH-dependent oligomerization. Camptosemin promoted adhesion of breast cancer cells and hemagglutination, and both activities were inhibited by its binding of sugar. The stability and unfolding/folding behavior of this lectin was characterized using fluorescence and far-UV circular dichroism spectroscopies. The results indicate that chemical unfolding of camptosemin proceeds as a two-state monomer-tetramer process. In addition, small-angle X-ray scattering shows that camptosemin behaves as a soluble and stable homo-tetramer molecule in solution.

A very unusual triple structural transition pattern below room temperature was observed for the antifilarial drug diethylcarbamazine citrate. Besides the first thermal, crystallographic, and vibrational investigations of this first-line drug used in clinical treatment for lymphatic filariasis, a noteworthy behavior with three structural transformations as a function of temperature was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Our X-ray data on single crystals allow for a complete featuring and understanding of all transitions, since the four structures associated with the three solid-solid phase transformations were accurately determined. Two of three structural transitions show an order-disorder mechanism and temperature hysteresis with exothermic peaks at 224 K (T(1)`) and 213 K (T(2)`) upon cooling and endothermic ones at 248 K (T(1)) and 226 K (T(2)) upon heating. The other transition occurs at 108 K (T(3)) and it is temperature-rate sensitive. Molecular displacements onto the (010) plane and conformational changes of the diethylcarbamazine backbone as a consequence of the C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding formation/cleavage between drug molecules explain the mechanism of the transitions at T(1)`/T(2). However, such changes are observed only on alternate columns of the drug intercalated by citrate chains, which leads to a doubling of the lattice period along the a axis of the 235 K structure with respect to the 150 and 293 K structures. At T(2)`/T(1), these structural alterations occur in all columns of the drug. At T(3), there is a rotation on the axis of the N-C bond between the carbamoyl moiety and an ethyl group of one crystallographically independent diethylcarbamazine molecule besides molecular shifts and other conformational alterations. The impact of this study is based on the fascinating finding in which the versatile capability of structural adaptation dependent on the thermal history was observed for a relatively simple organic salt, diethylcarbamazine citrate.

The structural, spectroscopic and theoretical study of cyclocreatine (1-carboxymethyl-2-iminoimidazolidine, CyCre) has been performed prompted by the biological relevance of the molecule and its potential role as a ligand in biometalic compounds. The crystal structure of CyCre has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound crystallizes as a zwitterion in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c. The crystal is further stabilized by a network of N-H center dot center dot center dot O bonds. Infrared and Raman spectra of the solid, electronic spectra of aqueous solutions at different pH values and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra have been recorded and analyzed. Band assignments were accomplished with the help of theoretical calculations. Optimized molecular geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies and molecular electrostatic potentials were calculated using methods based on the density functional theory. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Thermal analysis has been widely used for obtaining information about drug-polymer interactions and for pre-formulation studies of pharmaceutical dosage forms. In this work, biodegradable microparticles Of Poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) containing triamcinolone (TR) in various drug:polymer ratios were produced by spray drying. The main purpose of this study was to study the effect of the spray-drying process not only on the drug-polymer interactions but also on the stability of microparticles using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), X-ray analysis (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The evaluation of drug-polymer interactions and the pre-formulation studies were assessed using the DSC, TG and DTG, and IR. The quantitative analysis of drugs entrapped in PLGA microparticles was performed by the HPLC method. The results showed high levels of drug-loading efficiency for all used drug: polymer ratio, and the polymorph used for preparing the microparticles was the form B. The DSC and TG/DTG profiles for drug-loaded microparticles were very similar to those for the physical mixtures of the components. Therefore, a correlation between drug content and the structural and thermal properties of drug-loaded PLGA microparticles was established. These data indicate that the spray-drying technique does not affect the physico-chemical stability of the microparticle components. These results are in agreement with the IR analysis demonstrating that no significant chemical interaction occurs between TR and PLGA in both physical mixtures and microparticles. The results of the X-ray analysis are in agreement with the thermal analysis data showing that the amorphous form of TR prevails over a small fraction of crystalline phase of the drug also present in the TR-loaded microparticles. From the pre-formulation studies, we have found that the spray-drying methodology is an efficient process for obtaining TR-loaded PLGA microparticles. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermal behavior of PANI nanofibers doped with beta-naphthalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA) was investigated and their morphological and structural changes after heating were monitored by SEM, XRD and Raman techniques, respectively. By using electron-scanning microscopy it is possible to verify that the nanofiber morphology is stable and no polymer degradation is observed in thermogravimetric (TG) data up to 200 degrees C. Nevertheless, the heating promotes the formation of cross-linking structures (phenazine and/or oxazine-like rings), that is clearly demonstrated by the presence of bands at ca. 578, 1398, and 1644 cm(-1) in resonance Raman spectra of heated PANI-NSA samples. The most important consequence of the formation of cross-linking structures in PANI-NSA samples is that these samples retain their nanofiber morphology upon HCl doping in contrast to PANI-NSA nanofibers without heating. The question raised in the title has been answered by comparing the solvatochromism of two series of polarity probes, the lipophilicities of which were increased either by increasing the length of an alkyl group (R) attached to a fixed pyridine-based structure or through annelation (i.e., by fusing benzene rings onto a central pyridine-based structure). The following novel solvatochromic probes were synthesized: 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methylquinolinium-4-yl)ethenyl]-phenolate (MeQMBr(2)) and 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methyl-acridinium-4- yl) ethenyl)]phenolate (MeAMBr(2) The solvatochromic behavior of these probes, along with that of 2,6dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)ethenyl]phenol-ate(MePMBr(2)) was analyzed in terms of increasing probe lipophilicity, through annelation. Values of the empirical solvent polarity scale [E(T)(MePMBr(2))] in kcalmol(-1) correlated linearly with ET(30), the corresponding values for the extensively employed probe 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (RB). On the other hand, the nonlinear correlations of ET(MeQMBr(2)) or ET(MeAMBr(2)) with E(T)(30) are described by second-order polynomials. Possible reasons for this behavior include: i) self-aggregation of the probe, ii) photoinduced cis/trans isomerization of the dye, and iii) probe structure- and solvent-dependent contributions of the quinonoid and zwitterionic limiting formulas to the ground and excited states of the probe. We show that mechanisms (i) and (ii) are not operative under the experimental conditions employed; experimental evidence (NMR) and theoretical calculations are presented to support the conjecture that the length of the central ethenylic bond in the dye increases in the order MeAMBr(2) > MeQMBr(2) > MePMBr(2), That is, the contribution of the zwitterionic limiting formula predominates for the latter probe, as is also the case for RB, this being the reason for the observed linear correlation between the ET(MePMBr2) and the ET(30) scales. The effect of increasing probe lipophilicity on solvatochromic behavior therefore depends on the strategy employed. Increasing the length of R affects solvatochromism much less than annelation, because the former structural change hardly perturbs the energy of the intramolecular charge-transfer transition responsible for solvatochromism. The thermo-solvatochromic behavior (effect of temperature on solvatochromism) of the three probes was studied in mixtures of water with propanol and/or with DMSO. The solvation model used explicitly considers the presence of three ""species"" in the system: bulk solution and probe solvation shell [namely, water (W), organic solvent (Solv)], and solvent-water hydrogen-bonded aggregate (Solv-W). For aqueous propanol, the probe is efficiently solvated by Solv-W; the strong interaction of DMSO with W drastically decreases the efficiency of Solv-W in solvating the probe, relative to its precursor solvents. Temperature increases resulted in desolvation of the probes, due to the concomitant reduction in the structured characters of the components of the binary mixtures.

In recent years, Mg-Ni-based metastable alloys have been attracting attention due to their large hydrogen sorption capacities, low weight, low cost, and high availability. Despite the large discharge capacity and high activity of these alloys, the accelerated degradation of the discharge capacity after only few cycles of charge and discharge is the main shortcoming against their commercial use in batteries. The addition of alloying elements showed to be an effective way of improving the electrode performance of Mg-Ni-based alloys. In the present work, the effect of Ti and Pt alloying elements on the structure and electrode performance of a binary Mg-Ni alloy was investigated. The XRD and HRTEM revealed that all the investigated alloy compositions had multi-phase nanostructures, with crystallite size in the range of 6 nm. Moreover, the investigated alloying elements demonstrated remarkable improvements of both maximum discharge capacity and cycling life. Simultaneous addition of Ti and Pd demonstrated a synergetic effect on the electrochemical properties of the alloy electrodes. Among the investigated alloys, the best electrochemical performance was obtained for the Mg(51)Ti(4)Ni(43)Pt(2) composition (in at.%), which achieved 448 mAh g(-1) of maximum discharge capacity and retained almost 66% of this capacity after 10 cycles. In contrast, the binary Mg(55)Ni(45) alloy achieved only 248 mAh g(-1) and retained 11% of this capacity after 10 cycles. (C) 2010 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Single-phase perovskite structure Pb(1-x)Ba(x)TiO(3) thin films (x = 0.30, 0.50 and 0.70) were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The dielectric study reveals that the thin films undergo a diffuse type ferroelectric phase transition, which shows a broad peak. An increase of the diffusivity degree with the increasing Barium contents was observed, and it was associated to a grain decrease in the studied composition range. The temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies was used to characterize the phase transition temperatures. Raman modes persist above tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of breakdown of the local cubic symmetry by chemical disorder. The absence of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands in some interval temperature above FE-PE phase transition temperature Suggested a diffuse type phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in these thin films. The leakage Current density of the PBT thin films was studied at different temperatures and the data follow the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.75, 0.53 and 0.34 eV were obtained to the PBT70, PBT50 and PBT30 thin films, respectively. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
