La calidad ambiental se refiere a la contribución del ambiente al bienestar humano. Los usos del suelo de tipo peligroso en un ambiente urbano pueden afectar dicha calidad. En este trabajo, se analiza y evalúa la calidad ambiental urbana con respecto a los usos del suelo de tipo peligroso ubicados dentro del ejido urbano: depósitos de agroquímicos; silos; garajes de fumigadores terrestres; depósitos de garrafas y tubos de gas licuado; estaciones de servicio. La metodología propuesta para este estudio es la aplicación de Sistemas de Indicadores Ambientales bajo el modelo "Presión-Estado-Respuesta" (OCDE), con el fin de plantear y medir un índice de Calidad Ambiental. El objetivo final es identificar factores que se comportan como profundizadores o mitigadores del riesgo, medidos a través de indicadores de presión, estado y respuesta

La mayor parte delas personas que conviven con algún tipo de enfermedad, tienden a adoptar un mayor número de hábitos saludables, pudiendo crear nuevas maneras de ver la vida y a sí mismos. El objetivo de este estudio fue verificar la relación entre índices de calidad de vida y percepción de la imagen corporal de los pacientes incluidos en un programa de rehabilitación cardiovascular en Florianópolis-Brasil. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 24 sujetos varones con una edad de 62 ± 1,3 años, portadores de Enfermedad Arterial Coronaria. Para evaluar la calidad de vida, se utilizó el cuestionario Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) y para identificar el grado de descontento de la muestra con la imagen corporal, se aplicó el cuestionario de Stunkard y Sorensen (1993). El análisis de las pruebas fue hecho a través de un programa de estadísticas utilizando para tal fin, el software SPSS 11.0. El grado de asociación entre variables fue estudiado a partir del test de Kendall. Se verificó que cuanto mayor es el IMC y la silueta actual, mayor el grado de insatisfacción con la imagen corporal. Los síntomas emocionales también parecen estar correlacionados significativamente con un deseo de obtener una menor silueta corporal y con indicadores de menor calidad de vida (r= 0,474 y r= 0,735; p mayor 0,05). Los síntomas físicostambién se encuentran correlacionados de manera significativa con los síntomas emocionales. Estos resultados sugieren que las variables referentes a la calidad de vida poseen un peso significativo en la imagen corporal y la satisfacción con ésta, parece correlacionar con una menor cantidad de problemas emocionales y en un mejor afrontamiento de la enfermedad. Los programas de rehabilitación cardiovascular que implementan actividad física en los hábitos diarios se muestran adecuados como herramienta para la mejora de dichas dolencias en esta fase post aguda

This research comprises some considerations about production, productivity and scientific collaboration related to Information Science in geopolitical regions of Brazil, aiming at identifying their macro-level flow and trends. Reports were generated through identification of Information Science postgraduate programs and professors and collaborators who work on them - those reports were synthesized according to programs and regions, from the year of 2007 to 2009. We can conclude that the Southeast and Northeast regions are responsible for the higher production, productivity and collaboration indicators; we can also infer that the expansion of the relationship among different regions may offer the researchers opportunities to establish new partnerships, and to develop researches on emerging subjects in this scientific area

Surface sediments from the eastern South Atlantic were investigated for their lipid biomarker contents and bulk organic geochemical characteristics to identify sources, transport pathways and preservation processes of organic components. The sediments cover a wide range of depositional settings with large differences in mass accumulation rates. The highest marine organic carbon (OC) contributions are detected along the coast, especially underlying the Benguela upwelling system. Terrigenous OC contributions are highest in the Congo deep-sea fan. Lipid biomarker fluxes are significantly correlated to the extent of oxygen exposure in the sediment. Normalization to total organic carbon (TOC) contents enabled the characterization of regional lipid biomarker production and transport mechanisms. Principal component analyses revealed five distinct groups of characteristic molecular and bulk organic geochemical parameters. Combined with information on lipid sources, the main controlling mechanisms of the spatial lipid distributions in the surface sediments are defined, indicating marine productivity related to river-induced mixing and oceanic upwelling, wind-driven deep upwelling, river-supply of terrigenous organic material, shallow coastal upwelling and eolian supply of plant-waxes.

An investigation of recent bottom sediments between the Cyprus Island and the Syrian seacoast during Cruise 27 of R/V Vityaz-2 (1993) gave comprehensive field data significantly complementing our understanding of the sedimentation process in this part of the Mediterranean Sea. Mineralogical and geochemical indicators testify to different input into sedimentation of the Syrian and Nile River sources. The Nile River plays a leading role in terrigenous sedimentation in the southeastern Mediterranean Sea, especially in deep-sea areas. In contrast, contribution of weathering products of basalts and ophiolites from the Syrian drainage area (hornblende, monoclinic and rhombic pyroxenes, olivine, spinel, palagonite, and epidote) are particularly detectable in sediments of the near-coast zone. During Late Quaternary contribution of terrigenous material both from the Syrian and Nile sources was irregular in time.

In 2005, the International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group (IOCCG) convened a working group to examine the state of the art in ocean colour data merging, which showed that the research techniques had matured sufficiently for creating long multi-sensor datasets (IOCCG, 2007). As a result, ESA initiated and funded the DUE GlobColour project (http://www.globcolour.info/) to develop a satellite based ocean colour data set to support global carbon-cycle research. It aims to satisfy the scientific requirement for a long (10+ year) time-series of consistently calibrated global ocean colour information with the best possible spatial coverage. This has been achieved by merging data from the three most capable sensors: SeaWiFS on GeoEye's Orbview-2 mission, MODIS on NASA's Aqua mission and MERIS on ESA's ENVISAT mission. In setting up the GlobColour project, three user organisations were invited to help. Their roles are to specify the detailed user requirements, act as a channel to the broader end user community and to provide feedback and assessment of the results. The International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP) based at UNESCO in Paris provides direct access to the carbon cycle modelling community's requirements and to the modellers themselves who will use the final products. The UK Met Office's National Centre for Ocean Forecasting (NCOF) in Exeter, UK, provides an understanding of the requirements of oceanography users, and the IOCCG bring their understanding of the global user needs and valuable advice on best practice within the ocean colour science community. The three year project kicked-off in November 2005 under the leadership of ACRI-ST (France). The first year was a feasibility demonstration phase that was successfully concluded at a user consultation workshop organised by the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche, France, in December 2006. Error statistics and inter-sensor biases were quantified by comparison with insitu measurements from moored optical buoys and ship based campaigns, and used as an input to the merging. The second year was dedicated to the production of the time series. In total, more than 25 Tb of input (level 2) data have been ingested and 14 Tb of intermediate and output products created, with 4 Tb of data distributed to the user community. Quality control (QC) is provided through the Diagnostic Data Sets (DDS), which are extracted sub-areas covering locations of in-situ data collection or interesting oceanographic phenomena. This Full Product Set (FPS) covers global daily merged ocean colour products in the time period 1997-2006 and is also freely available for use by the worldwide science community at http://www.globcolour.info/data_access_full_prod_set.html. The GlobColour service distributes global daily, 8-day and monthly data sets at 4.6 km resolution for, chlorophyll-a concentration, normalised water-leaving radiances (412, 443, 490, 510, 531, 555 and 620 nm, 670, 681 and 709 nm), diffuse attenuation coefficient, coloured dissolved and detrital organic materials, total suspended matter or particulate backscattering coefficient, turbidity index, cloud fraction and quality indicators. Error statistics from the initial sensor characterisation are used as an input to the merging methods and propagate through the merging process to provide error estimates for the output merged products. These error estimates are a key component of GlobColour as they are invaluable to the users; particularly the modellers who need them in order to assimilate the ocean colour data into ocean simulations. An intensive phase of validation has been undertaken to assess the quality of the data set. In addition, inter-comparisons between the different merged datasets will help in further refining the techniques used. Both the final products and the quality assessment were presented at a second user consultation in Oslo on 20-22 November 2007 organised by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA); presentations are available on the GlobColour WWW site. On request of the ESA Technical Officer for the GlobColour project, the FPS data set was mirrored in the PANGAEA data library.

The international, interdisciplinary biodiversity research project BIOTA AFRICA initiated a standardized biodiversity monitoring network along climatic gradients across the African continent. Due to an identified lack of adequate monitoring designs, BIOTA AFRICA developed and implemented the standardized BIOTA Biodiversity Observatories, that meet the following criteria (a) enable long-term monitoring of biodiversity, potential driving factors, and relevant indicators with adequate spatial and temporal resolution, (b) facilitate comparability of data generated within different ecosystems, (c) allow integration of many disciplines, (d) allow spatial up-scaling, and (e) be applicable within a network approach. A BIOTA Observatory encompasses an area of 1 km2 and is subdivided into 100 1-ha plots. For meeting the needs of sampling of different organism groups, the hectare plot is again subdivided into standardized subplots, whose sizes follow a geometric series. To allow for different sampling intensities but at the same time to characterize the whole square kilometer, the number of hectare plots to be sampled depends on the requirements of the respective discipline. A hierarchical ranking of the hectare plots ensures that all disciplines monitor as many hectare plots jointly as possible. The BIOTA Observatory design assures repeated, multidisciplinary standardized inventories of biodiversity and its environmental drivers, including options for spatial up- and downscaling and different sampling intensities. BIOTA Observatories have been installed along climatic and landscape gradients in Morocco, West Africa, and southern Africa. In regions with varying land use, several BIOTA Observatories are situated close to each other to analyze management effects.
