The Montreal Process indicators are intended to provide a common framework for assessing and reviewing progress toward sustainable forest management. The potential of a combined geometrical-optical/spectral mixture analysis model was assessed for mapping the Montreal Process age class and successional age indicators at a regional scale using Landsat Thematic data. The project location is an area of eucalyptus forest in Emu Creek State Forest, Southeast Queensland, Australia. A quantitative model relating the spectral reflectance of a forest to the illumination geometry, slope, and aspect of the terrain surface and the size, shape, and density, and canopy size. Inversion of this model necessitated the use of spectral mixture analysis to recover subpixel information on the fractional extent of ground scene elements (such as sunlit canopy, shaded canopy, sunlit background, and shaded background). Results obtained fron a sensitivity analysis allowed improved allocation of resources to maximize the predictive accuracy of the model. It was found that modeled estimates of crown cover projection, canopy size, and tree densities had significant agreement with field and air photo-interpreted estimates. However, the accuracy of the successional stage classification was limited. The results obtained highlight the potential for future integration of high and moderate spatial resolution-imaging sensors for monitoring forest structure and condition. We describe the classical and quantum two-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of large blue-detuned evanescent-wave guiding cold atoms in hollow fiber. We show that chaotic dynamics exists for classic dynamics, when the intensity of the beam is periodically modulated. The two-dimensional distributions of atoms in (x,y) plane are simulated. We show that the atoms will accumulate on several annular regions when the system enters a regime of global chaos. Our simulation shows that, when the atomic flux is very small, a similar distribution will be obtained if we detect the atomic distribution once each the modulation period and integrate the signals. For quantum dynamics, quantum collapses, and revivals appear. For periodically modulated optical potential, the variance of atomic position will be suppressed compared to the no modulation case. The atomic angular momentum will influence the evolution of wave function in two-dimensional quantum system of hollow fiber.

The structures of diaqua(1,7-dioxa-4-thia-10-azacyclododecane)nickel dinitrate, [Ni(C8H17NO2S)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2), (I), bis(nitrato-O,O')(1,4,7-trioxa-10-azacyclododecane)mercury, [Hg(NO3)(2)(C8H17NO3)], (II), and aqua(nitrato-O)(1-oxa-4,7,10-triazacyclododecane)copper nitrate, [Cu(NO3)(C8H19N3O)(H2O)]NO3, (III), reveal each macrocycle binding in a tetradentate manner. The conformations of the ligands in (I) and (III) are the same and distinct from that identified for (II). These differences are in agreement with molecular-mechanics predictions of ligand conformation as a function of metal-ion size.

In this paper, a new v-metric based approach is proposed to design decentralized controllers for multi-unit nonlinear plants that admit a set of plant decompositions in an operating space. Similar to the gap metric approach in literature, it is shown that the operating space can also be divided into several subregions based on a v-metric indicator, and each of the subregions admits the same controller structure. A comparative case study is presented to display the advantages of proposed approach over the gap metric approach. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The convection-dispersion model and its extended form have been used to describe solute disposition in organs and to predict hepatic availabilities. A range of empirical transit-time density functions has also been used for a similar purpose. The use of the dispersion model with mixed boundary conditions and transit-time density functions has been queried recently by Hisaka and Sugiyanaa in this journal. We suggest that, consistent with soil science and chemical engineering literature, the mixed boundary conditions are appropriate providing concentrations are defined in terms of flux to ensure continuity at the boundaries and mass balance. It is suggested that the use of the inverse Gaussian or other functions as empirical transit-time densities is independent of any boundary condition consideration. The mixed boundary condition solutions of the convection-dispersion model are the easiest to use when linear kinetics applies. In contrast, the closed conditions are easier to apply in a numerical analysis of nonlinear disposition of solutes in organs. We therefore argue that the use of hepatic elimination models should be based on pragmatic considerations, giving emphasis to using the simplest or easiest solution that will give a sufficiently accurate prediction of hepatic pharmacokinetics for a particular application. 1. A model of the population dynamics of Banksia ornata was developed, using stochastic dynamic programming (a state-dependent decision-making tool), to determine optimal fire management strategies that incorporate trade-offs between biodiversity conservation and fuel reduction. 2. The modelled population of B. ornata was described by its age and density, and was exposed to the risk of unplanned fires and stochastic variation in germination success. 3. For a given population in each year, three management strategies were considered: (i) lighting a prescribed fire; (ii) controlling the incidence of unplanned fire; (iii) doing nothing. 4. The optimal management strategy depended on the state of the B. ornata population, with the time since the last fire (age of the population) being the most important variable. Lighting a prescribed fire at an age of less than 30 years was only optimal when the density of seedlings after a fire was low (< 100 plants ha(-1)) or when there were benefits of maintaining a low fuel load by using more frequent fire. 5. Because the cost of management was assumed to be negligible (relative to the value of the persistence of the population), the do-nothing option was never the optimal strategy, although lighting prescribed fires had only marginal benefits when the mean interval between unplanned fires was less than 20-30 years.

A chance constrained programming model is developed to assist Queensland barley growers make varietal and agronomic decisions in the face of changing product demands and volatile production conditions. Unsuitable or overlooked in many risk programming applications, the chance constrained programming approach nonetheless aptly captures the single-stage decision problem faced by barley growers of whether to plant lower-yielding but potentially higher-priced malting varieties, given a particular expectation of meeting malting grade standards. Different expectations greatly affect the optimal mix of malting and feed barley activities. The analysis highlights the suitability of chance constrained programming to this specific class of farm decision problem.

A modelling framework is developed to determine the joint economic and environmental net benefits of alternative land allocation strategies. Estimates of community preferences for preservation of natural land, derived from a choice modelling study, are used as input to a model of agricultural production in an optimisation framework. The trade-offs between agricultural production and environmental protection are analysed using the sugar industry of the Herbert River district of north Queensland as an example. Spatially-differentiated resource attributes and the opportunity costs of natural land determine the optimal tradeoffs between production and conservation for a range of sugar prices.

The reactions of mercury(II) with the mixed donor encapsulating ligands 3,6,16-trithia-6,11,19-triazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane (AMN(3)S(3)sar) and 1-amino-8-methyl-6,19-dithia-3,10,13,16-tetraazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane (AMN(4)S(2)sar) have been studied. NMR ligand-ligand competition experiments with the ligands 1,4,8,11-tetraazaeyclotetradecane ([14]aneN(4)), 1-thia-4,7,10-triazacyclododecane ([12]aneN(3)S) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with AMN(3)S(3)sar and Hg(II) indicated that [14]aneN(4) would be an appropriate competing ligand for the, determination of the Hg(II) stability constant. Calculations indicated the ratio of concentrations of AMN3S3sar, [14]aneN(4) and Hg(II) required for the determination of the stability constant ranged from 1:1:1 to 1:5:1. Refinement of the titration curves yielded log(10)K[Hg(AMN(3)S(3)sar)](2+) = 17.7. A similar competition titration resulted in the determination of the stability constant for the AMN(4)S(2)sar system as log(10)K[Hg(AMN(4)S(2)sar)](2+) = 19.5. The observed binding constants for the mixed N/S donor systems and the hexaaza analogues sar (3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo [6.6.6]icosane) and diamsar (1,8-diamino-3,6,10,13,16,19 -hexazabicyclo [6.6.6] icosane (log(10)K-[Hg(diamsar)](2+) = 26.4; log(10)K[Hg(sar)](2+) = 28.1) differ by approximately ten orders of magnitude. The difference is ascribed not to a cryptate effect but to a mismatch in the Hg-N and Hg-S bond lengths in the N/S systems.

A series of alpha-sialon (alpha') compositions containing mixed stabilising cations were prepared, by introducing additional CaO to a basic Sm alpha-sialon compositions. The thermal stability of these Sm-Ca-containing alpha-sialon phases was investigated using XRD, SEM and EDXS techniques. It was found that the addition of calcium into the Sm alpha-sialon systems greatly improved the stability of the alpha-sialon phases. Calcium was found to be incorporated into the alpha-sialon structure, coexistent with the samarium, and partitioning of the calcium and samarium was observed between the alpha' phase and grain boundary phases. This indicates a technique which may be used to improve the thermal stability of the alpha' phase while maintaining good refractory phases at the gialon grain boundaries. Taking functional programming to its extremities in search of simplicity still requires integration with other development (e.g. formal) methods. Induction is the key to deriving and verifying functional programs, but can be simplified through packaging proofs with functions, particularly folds, on data (structures). Totally Functional Programming avoids the complexities of interpretation by directly representing data (structures) as platonic combinators - the functions characteristic to the data. The link between the two simplifications is that platonic combinators are a kind of partially-applied fold, which means that platonic combinators inherit fold-theoretic properties, but with some apparent simplifications due to the platonic combinator representation. However, despite observable behaviour within functional programming that suggests that TFP is widely-applicable, significant work remains before TFP as such could be widely adopted.

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a cationic amphiphilic porphyrin mixed with n-alkanes octadecane and hexatriacontane were prepared and characterized, to examine the influence of the alkanes on film structure and stability. While the structure present in these films was controlled primarily by the porphyrin, the addition of the alkanes resulted in significant changes to both the phase behavior of the Langmuir films and the molecular arrangement of the LB films. These changes, as well as the observed chain length effects, are explained in terms of the intermolecular interactions present in the films.

Surface pressure (pi)-molecular area (A) curves were used to characterize the packing of pseudo-ternary mixed Langmuir monolayers of egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC), 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane (DOTAP) and L-alpha-dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE). This pseudo-ternary mixture EPC/DOPE/DOTAP has been successfully employed in liposome formulations designed for DNA non-viral vectors. Pseudo-binary mixtures were also studied as a control. Miscibility behavior was inferred from pi-A curves applying the additivity rule by calculating the excess free energy of mixture (Delta G(Exc)). The interaction between the lipids was also deduced from the surface compressional modulus (C(s)(-1)). The deviation from ideality shows dependence on the lipid polar head type and monolayer composition. For lower DOPE concentrations, the forces are predominantly attractive. However, if the monolayer is DOPE rich, the DOTAP presence disturbs the PE-PE intermolecular interaction and the net interaction is then repulsive. The ternary monolayer EPC/DOPE/DOTAP presented itself in two configurations, modulated by the DOPE content, in a similar behavior to the DOPE/DOTAP monolayers. These results contribute to the understanding of the lipid interactions and packing in self-assembled systems associated with the in vitro and in vivo stability of liposomes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
