As the most important viral cause of severe respiratory disease in infants and increasing recognition as important in the elderly and immunocompromised, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is responsible for a massive health burden worldwide. Prophylactic antibodies were successfully developed against RSV. However, their use is restricted to a small group of infants considered at high risk of severe RSV disease. There is still no specific therapeutics or vaccines to combat RSV. As such, it remains a major unmet medical need for most individuals. The World Health Organisations International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (WHO ICTRP) and PubMed were used to identify and review all RSV vaccine, prophylactic and therapeutic candidates currently in clinical trials. This review presents an expert commentary on all RSV-specific prophylactic and therapeutic candidates that have entered clinical trials since 2008.

Ultrasound has long been recognized as a means of effecting change at the cellular and tissue levels [1-3], which may be enhanced in the presence of photosensitive agents [4-6]. During insonation, the presence of bubbles can also play a role, creating strong microstreaming effects in solution and in more dramatic circumstances leading to the formation of energetic microjets [7], plasmas [8], and the production of other highly reactive species [9]. Such sonodynamic activity has generated particular excitement in the medical community as it Moreover the dual role for microbubbles as both an adjunct to therapy and a diagnostic echogenicity enhancer has seen industry take a proactive role in their development. In the present paper we studied the role of ultrasound driven sonoluminescent light on the degradation of a fluorescent test species (rhodamine) in the presence of an archetypal photocatalyst material, TiO 2, with a view to exploring its exploitation potential for downstream medical applications. We found that, whilst the efficiency of this process is seen to be low compared with conventional ultra-violet sources, we advocate the further exploration of the sonoluminescent approach given its potential for non-invasive applications. A strategy for enhancing the effect is also suggested.

Background: The GMC has recommended introducing student assistantships during which final year students, under supervision, undertake most of the responsibilities of a FY1 doctor. The Medical School at Queen’s University Belfast in 2011/12 introduced an assistantship programme. We have evaluated the impact of the assistantship on students’ perception of their preparedness for starting work.
Methods: Students were asked to complete a questionnaire at the beginning of the assistantship. It assessed the students’ perception of their preparedness in five areas: clinical and practical skills, communications skills, teaching and learning, understanding the work environment and team working. After the assistantship they again completed the questionnaire. Comparison of the results allowed an assessment of the impact of the assistantship.
Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in the students' perception of their preparation for 49 of 56 tasks contained within the questionnaire. After the assistantship 81.2% of students felt well prepared for starting work compared with 38.9% before the assistantship. 93.9% agreed that the assistantship had improved their preparedness for starting work.
Conclusions: The assistantship at Queen’s University improves medical students’ perception of their preparedness for starting work. The majority of medical students feel well prepared for starting work after completing the assistantship.
