By using the study of the lattice energy and the structural parameters of binary inorganic crystals, a new parameter reflecting the thermal expansion property has been found, the relation between the linear expansion coefficient and new parameter has been established. A semiempirical method for evaluation of linear expansion coefficient from the lattice energy is presented, and developed to the complex crystals. The estimated values of the linear expansion coefficients of both simple and complex crystals are in good agreement with the experimental values.

8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-q) salt of pyromellitic acid (benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid, H(4)bta) forms robust lamellar structure where [H(2)bta](2-) anions build up sheets through strong hydrogen bonds in two dimensions and [H-8-q](+) cations act as pillars to afford an extended three dimensional network.

The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of isothermally crystallized Nylon 1212 show that gamma-form crystals form below 90 degrees C and the alpha-form crystals call exist above 140 degrees C. In the temperature range of 90-140 degrees C, the a-form gamma-form crystals coexist. Variable-temperature WAXD exhibits that the nylon 1212 gamma-form does not show crystal and transition on heating, while a-form isothermally crystallized at 160 degrees C exhibits Brill transition at a little higher than 180 degrees C on heating. The multiple melting behaviors of Nylon 1212 isothermally crystallized from melt come from a complex mechanism of different crystal structures, dual lamellar population and melting-recrystallization. In polarized optical microscope (POM) observations, Nylon 1212 isothermally crystallized at 175 degrees C shows the ringed banded spherulites. However, at temperatures below 160 degrees C the ringed handed image disappears, and cross-extinct spherulites are formed.

An empirical method based on chemical bond theory for the estimation of the lattice energy for ionic crystals has been proposed. The lattice energy contributions have been partitioned into bond dependent terms. For an individual bond, the lattice energy contribution made by it has been separated into ionic and covalent parts. Our calculated values of lattice energies agree well with available experimental and theoretical values for diverse ionic crystals. This method, which requires detailed crystallographic information and elaborate computation, might be extended and possibly yield further insights with respect to bond properties of materials.

The crystal field splitting of 5d level of EU2+ and Ce3+ in halide crystals has been studied. Our results indicate that the 10Dq splitting can be directly related to the homopolar part of average energy gap, the coordination number of central (doped) ion, the charge of neighboring anions and bond ionicity between central ion to nearest anions. A relation between the 10Dq splitting and the above mentioned factors is presented. Our calculated results are in reasonable agreement with diverse experiments.

Based on the idea that the hardness of covalent crystal is intrinsic and equivalent to the sum of the resistance to the indenter of each bond per unit area, a semiempirical method for the evaluation of hardness of multicomponent crystals is presented. Applied to beta-BC2N crystal, the predicted value of hardness is in good agreement with the experimental value. It is found that bond density or electronic density, bond length, and degree of covalent bonding are three determinative factors for the hardness of a polar covalent crystal. Our method offers the advantage of applicability to a broad class of materials and initializes a link between macroscopic property and electronic structure from first principles calculation.

The morphologies and crystalline structures of melt-crystallized ultrathin isotactic poly(1-butene) films have been studied with transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It is demonstrated that a bypass of form II crystallization can be achieved with an increase in its crystallization temperature. Electron microscopy observations show that melt-grown isotactic poly(1-butene) single crystals have a well-shaped hexagonal form, whereas form I crystals converted from form II display the morphologies of their tetragonal precursors. Electron diffraction results indicate that, instead of the twinned hexagonal pattern of the converted form I crystal, the directly formed form I single crystals exhibit an untwinned hexagonal pattern.

The analysis of the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data was based upon particle characteristic function, one-dimensional electron-density correlation function and particle distribution function. The microstructure of nylon 66 with different degrees of crystallinity was studied by means of X-ray scattering method. The radius of gyration R-g, the Porod radius R-p, the thickness of crystalline region L-c the thickness of non-crystalline region L-n, the thickness of interphase region d(tr), the long period L, the semiaxises of particles (a, a, b), the distribution of the particle sizes and the scattering invariant were calculated. The results indicate that there was a significant interphase region between the crystalline region and the non-crystalline region. and its content (W-t,W-x) should not be neglected in comparison with that of crystalline region W-c,W-x. The morphology of nylon 66 prepared by isothermal crystallization at a high temperature was mainly a lamellar structure, while the spherical crystals dominated in the quenched sample. The size of the particles in the quenched sample was smaller than that of those in the isothermally crystallized sample. and the distribution of the particle sizes in the isothermally crystallized sample was wider.

Single crystal of butyl branched polyethylene with various molecular weight formed from the melt in the presence of electric field was studied. It was found that electric field influenced morphology and structure of the butyl branched polyethylene single crystals formed. The lateral habits of the single crystals were circular shape, which was different from truncated lozenge or lenticular shape single crystals formed from the melt in the absence of electric field. The stems in the single crystals formed in the presence Of electric field were perpendicular to the basal plane of the single crystals, which was different from chain tilting in single crystals formed from the melt in the absence of electric field. The electron diffraction patterns showed that the structure of the circular single crystals was a quasi-hexagonal with looser chain packing. This looser chain packing was favorable to thickening growth of single crystals through chain sliding diffusion. The thickness of the single crystals was much larger and depended on molecular weight. It indicated that the single crystal in the presence of electric field should be an extended chain type Single crystal.

The effect of LB monolayers on the mixed crystal was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results show that LB monolayer has selectivity for the different nucleation ions with equal charge numbers and about the same ion radius. The selectivity is dependent on the head groups of monolayer. The monolayer and the doped ions have also an effect on the crystal morphology. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The lateral habits of low molecular weight short chain branched polyethylene single crystals from the melt were studied. Three crystallization temperatures (102, 104 and 106 degrees C) were selected for single crystal growth. It was found that the lateral habits of single crystals were asymmetric at all the crystallization temperatures selected. The electron diffraction patterns and tilting series experiments evidenced that there existed chain tilting in all the lamellae. It was the chain tilting that lead to the asymmetry of the growth rate and of lateral habits of the single crystals about the b-axis. The lateral habits substantially changed from the growth at 102 degrees C where the truncated lozenge single crystals formed with straight (110) faces to the growth at 104 degrees C where the lenticular single crystals appeared. This change occurred at 20 degrees C lower than that in a low molecular weight linear polyethylene with the same molecular weight. Furthermore, kinetics theory analysis evidenced that the change of lateral habits from truncated lozenge to lenticular shape resulted from the transition of growth regime. The results were the same as that of high molecular weight linear polyethylene but different to that of low molecular weight linear polyethylene. Laser crystals of (Y1-xErx)(3)Al5O12, (YAG:Er) have been grown by the Czochralski method and the spectral properties have been studied for different Er3+ concentrations. The effects of various Er3+ concentrations on the structural distortions, luminescence quenching Of F-4(9/2), H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) and red shift in laser wavelength have been discussed for the YAG:Er laser crystals. By using absorption spectra and Judd-Ofelt theory the experimental oscillator strengths, Omega(lambda), parameters and the excited state integrated absorption cross sections of Er3+ ion are reported and some variation regularities of these parameters have been observed. The high-resolution emission spectra of KMgF3 : Eu and KMgF3 : Eu-Ce single crystals were measured at 77 K. The site substitution of Eu2+ and Eu2+-Ce3+ co-doped system in KMgF3 was discussed. Eu2+ substituted for K+ sites on three different site-symmetry: cubic, trigonal and tetragonal. The attribution of all lines occurring in the emission spectra were ascertained. The indirect energy transfer from P-6(5/2) states of Eu2+ to 4f5d states of Ce3+ in KMgF3 : Eu-Ce was observed and the energy transfer mechanism was studied. The d-d interaction among levels was proposed.

By using different catalyst systems, two trans-1,4-polybutadiene (TPBD) samples with different tr trans-content and molecular weight were synthesized. The phase transition of two samples from monoclinic form to hexagonal phase was revealed by differential calorimeter scanning and X-ray, respectively. The small-angle X-ray scattering measurements showed the remarkable discrepancy of phase transition and melting point between the two samples was attributed to the different lamellar thickness of crystals: The crystals with different crystalline morphology and lamellar thickness were developed by casting different concentration TPBD solutions. Transmission electron microscopy morphology observations proved that annealing the specimen at the temperature above the phase transition point for different times resulted in the different lamellae thickening of monoclinic form. It means that annealing the TPBD in its hexagonal phase will also slightly favor the increase of both the phase transition temperature and melting point of hexagonal phase.
