This essay aims to analyze the relationship between life and school. In opposition to theoretical perspectives longed for a possible reconciliation between life and school, we look for to show to existing tension between these two spheres, making an analysis of the themes of the experience with birth, death and the difference, and highlight that this reflection invites the subjects of the educational practice to an ethical attitude of care for the other, for oneself and so that the other one takes care of the care of the self. Having the thoughts of Arendt’s and Foucault’s as reference, we understand that life goes beyond school knowledge and practices, offering us what we think about educational practice and making the subjects of that practice learn how to place themselves between life and school, looking for new senses for themselves and resistance to the existent while they transform themselves. Thus, we wait to offer the educators some life problems that pervade the educational practice, reverberate in their experience and make them think about what they have left.

The production of a dictionary always generates controversy about decisions to be taken by the lexicographer. They are based – a priori – in previous theoretical and methodological choices. What we mean by dictionary? Why making certain choices rather than others? How to reconcile (if there is a reconciliation) the different approaches to describe the lexicon? The objective here is to contribute with theoretical and methodological reflections related to the Juruna Lexicography (Yudjá), as well as for lexicographical studies camp. This text addresses critical points of dictionaries production processes – if we may so call it – the history of the act of making a dictionary, so we can discuss choices to be taken to the entries of verbs in the Juruna-Portuguese bilingual dictionary assembly provided as a long term project result, in which some collaborators are working, including community’s indigenous. The work contains sections that will raise historical and linguistic discussions about the compilation of a dictionary and how this act binds to the applicability for the subjects that use this instrument firming / mobilizer of the lexicon visions. The focus here will be to discuss the verbs entries in the Juruna dictionary (stemming), taking lexicographical history as a contributor to certain choices of dictionaries production nowadays, whether for mother tongue, for foreign language, specialized lexicons, semantic groups, and systematizations for languages that are starting/beginning a first publication of dictionaries

The aim of this study was to evaluate the facial profile changes due to natural growth and induced by Herbst appliance and Bionator in the treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion. In order to do that, we used a sample of 90 lateral radiographs of 45 individuals in pre-pubertal stage, divided up in two experimental groups and one control. The first group, composed of 15 brazilian individuals, with initial mean age of 9.4 years, was treated with the Herbst appliance for a period of seven months. The second experimental group consisting of 15 brazilian individuals, initial mean age of 9.9 years has gone through bionator therapy for an average period of 21 months. The control group of 15 individuals, who were not treated orthodontically, comes up from the Burlington Growth Centre, University of Toronto, Canada. The intragroup comparison was performed using the Student t test and intergroup comparisons by ANOVA complemented by the Bonferroni test. The results have shown that only the group treated with the Herbst appliance presented significant changes in facial profile with improvement of its convexity and lower lip protrusion.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the vertical and horizontal dentoskeletal changes induced by the Klammt Open Elastic Activator in the treatment of the Class II Division 1 malocclusion. The sample of 34 children was divided into two groups of 17 subjects each (ten girls, seven boys), matched by age and gender and with an initial mean age of 8.5 years. The data was analyzed using a Student's t-test for intragroup and intergroup comparison. The results showed that the appliance promoted dentoalveolar restriction of the maxilar growth within normal anteroposterior and vertical growth of the maxillary apical base; increment in the vertical displacement the mandibular symphysis associated with normal horizontal growth of the mandible; palatal tipping of the upper incisors; restriction of the anterior migration of the upper molars; greater eruption pattern and normal anterior displacement of the lower incisors and molars. It was concluded that Klammt appliance induce changes that are predominantly horizontal dentoalveolar in upper arch and vertical dentoalveolar in lower arch and vertical skeletal changes in the mandible.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess radiographically the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunctive treatment to scaling and root planing (SRP) on induced periodontitis in dexamethasone-induced immunosuppressed rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The animals were divided into 2 groups: ND group (n=60): saline treatment; D group (n=60): dexamethasone treatment. In both ND and D groups, periodontal disease was induced by the placement of a ligature in the left first mandibular molar. After 7 days, ligature was removed and all animals received SRP, being divided according to the following treatments: SRP: saline and PDT: phenothiazinium dye (TBO) plus laser irradiation. Ten animals per treatment were killed at 7, 15 and 30 days. The distance between the cementoenamel junction and the height of the alveolar bone crest in the mesial surface of the mandibular left first molars was determined in millimeters in each radiograph. he radiographic values were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test at a p value <0.05. RESULTS: Intragroup radiographic assessment (ND and D groups) showed that there was statistically signifcant less bone loss in the animals treated with PDT in all experimental periods compared to those submitted to SRP. Intergroup radiographic analysis (ND and D groups) demonstrated that there was greater bone loss in the ND group treated with SRP compared to the D group treated with PDT at 7 and 30 days. CONCLUSION: PDT was an effective adjunctive treatment to SRP on induced periodontitis in dexamethasone-induced immunosuppressed rats.

Background The aim of this study was to compare antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjunctive treatment to scaling and root planing (SRP) for induced periodontitis in nicotine-modified rats. Material & Methods A total of 240 rats were evenly divided into two groups: C – saline solution treatment; N – nicotine treatment. Periodontal disease was induced in both groups at the first mandibular molar. After 7 days, the ligature was removed. All animals were submitted to SRP and were divided according to the following treatments: SRP – irrigation with saline solution; Toluidine Blue-O (TBO) – irrigation with phenothiazinium dye (100 μg/ml); LLLT – laser irradiation (660 nm; 0.03 W; 4 J); and aPDT – TBO and laser irradiation. Ten animals in each group/treatment were euthanized at 7, 15 and 30 days. The histometric and immunohistochemical values were statistically analysed. Results Intragroup analysis demonstrated that in both groups the aPDT treatment resulted in lower bone loss (BL) when compared to SRP in all experimental periods. Intergroup analysis demonstrated that aPDT treatment resulted in lower BL in Group N than in Group C treated with SRP in all experimental periods. Conclusion Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy was an effective adjunctive treatment to SRP for induced periodontitis in nicotine-modified rats.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder associated with metabolic dysfunction and changes in cardiovascular risk markers, and using oral contraceptives (OCs) may exert a further negative effect on these alterations in patients with PCOS. Thus, the primary objective of this study was to assess the effects on arterial function and structure of an OC containing chlormadinone acetate (2 mg) and ethinylestradiol (30 mcg), alone or combined with spironolactone (OC+SPL), in patients with PCOS. Study Design: This was a randomized, controlled clinical trial. Fifty women with PCOS between 18 and 35 years of age were randomized by a computer program to use OC or OC+SPL. Brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation, carotid intima-media thickness and the carotid artery stiffness index were evaluated at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Serum markers for cardiovascular disease were also analyzed. The intragroup data were analyzed using analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test. A multivariate linear regression model was used to analyze the intergroup data. Results: At 12 months, the increase in mean total cholesterol levels was greater in the OC+SPL group than in the OC group (27% vs. 13%, respectively; p=.02). The increase in mean sex hormone-binding globulin levels was greater in the OC group than in the OC+SPL group (424% vs. 364%, respectively; p=.01). No statistically significant differences between the groups were found for any of the other variables. Conclusion: The addition of spironolactone to an OC containing chlormadinone acetate and ethinylestradiol conferred no cardiovascular risk-marker advantages in young women with PCOS. Objectives: To conduct a controlled study contrasting titanium surface topography after procedures that simulated 10 years of brushing using toothpastes with or without fluoride. Methods: Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V disks (6 mm circle divide x 4 mm) were mirror-polished and treated according to 6 groups (n = 6) as a function of immersion (I) or brushing (B) using deionised water (W), fluoride-free toothpaste (T) and fluoride toothpaste (FT). Surface topography was evaluated at baseline (pretreatment) and post-treatment, using atomic force microscope in order to obtain three-dimensional images and mean roughness. Specimens submitted to immersion were submerged in the vehicles without brushing. For brushed specimens, procedures were conducted using a linear brushing machine with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Immersion and brushing were performed for 244 h. IFT and BFT samples were analysed under scanning electron microscope with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Pre and post-treatment values were compared using the paired Student T-test (alpha = .05). Intergroup comparisons were conducted using one-way ANOVA with Tukey post-test (alpha = .05). Results: cp Ti mean roughness (in nanometers) comparing pre and post-treatment were: IW, 2.29 +/- 0.55/2.33 +/- 0.17; IT, 2.24 +/- 0.46/2.02 +/- 0.38; IFT, 2.22 +/- 0.53/1.95 +/- 0.36; BW, 2.22 +/- 0.42/3.76 +/- 0.45; BT, 2.27 +/- 0.55/16.05 +/- 3.25; BFT, 2.27 +/- 0.51/22.39 +/- 5.07. Mean roughness (in nanometers) measured in Ti-6Al-4V disks (pre/post-treatment) were: IW, 1.79 +/- 0.25/2.01 +/- 0.25; IT, 1.61 +/- 0.13/1.74 +/- 0.19; IFT, 1.92 +/- 0.39/2.29 +/- 0.51; BW, 2.00 +/- 0.71/2.05 +/- 0.43; BT, 2.37 +/- 0.86/11.17 +/- 2.29; BFT, 1.83 +/- 0.50/15.73 +/- 1.78. No significant differences were seen after immersions (p > .05). Brushing increased the roughness of cp Ti and of Ti-6Al-4V (p < .01); cp Ti had topographic changes after BW, BT and BFT treatments whilst Ti-6Al-4V was significantly different only after BT and BTF. EDS has not detected fluoride or sodium ions on metal surfaces. Conclusions: Exposure to toothpastes (immersion) does not affect titanium per se; their use during brushing affects titanium topography and roughness. The associated effects of toothpaste abrasives and fluorides seem to increase roughness on titanium brushed surfaces. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
