Ocean acidification and carbonation, driven by anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), have been shown to affect a variety of marine organisms and are likely to change ecosystem functioning. High latitudes, especially the Arctic, will be the first to encounter profound changes in carbonate chemistry speciation at a large scale, namely the under-saturation of surface waters with respect to aragonite, a calcium carbonate polymorph produced by several organisms in this region. During a CO2 perturbation study in 2010, in the framework of the EU-funded project EPOCA, the temporal dynamics of a plankton bloom was followed in nine mesocosms, manipulated for CO2 levels ranging initially from about 185 to 1420 ?atm. Dissolved inorganic nutrients were added halfway through the experiment. Autotrophic biomass, as identified by chlorophyll a standing stocks (Chl a), peaked three times in all mesocosms. However, while absolute Chl a concentrations were similar in all mesocosms during the first phase of the experiment, higher autotrophic biomass was measured at high in comparison to low CO2 during the second phase, right after dissolved inorganic nutrient addition. This trend then reversed in the third phase. There were several statistically significant CO2 effects on a variety of parameters measured in certain phases, such as nutrient utilization, standing stocks of particulate organic matter, and phytoplankton species composition. Interestingly, CO2 effects developed slowly but steadily, becoming more and more statistically significant with time. The observed CO2 related shifts in nutrient flow into different phytoplankton groups (mainly diatoms, dinoflagellates, prasinophytes and haptophytes) could have consequences for future organic matter flow to higher trophic levels and export production, with consequences for ecosystem productivity and atmospheric CO2.

Numerous references can be found in scientific literature regarding biomass gasification. However, there are few works related to sludge gasification. A study of sewage sludge gasification process in a bubbling fluidised bed gasifier on a laboratory scale is here reported. The aim was to find the optimum conditions for reducing the production of tars and gain more information on the influx of different operating variables in the products resulting from the gasification of this waste. The variables studied were the equivalence ratio (ER), the steam-biomass ratio (SB) and temperature. Specifically, the ER was varied from 0.2 to 0.4, the SB from 0 to 1 and the temperature from 750 °C (1023 K) to 850 °C (1123 K). Although it was observed that tar production could be considerably reduced (up to 72%) by optimising the gasification conditions, the effect of using alumina (aluminium oxide, of proven efficacy in destroying the tar produced in biomass gasification) as primary catalyst in air and air-steam mixture tests was also verified. The results show that by adding small quantities of alumina to the bed (10% by weight of fed sludge) considerable reductions in tar production can be obtained (up to 42%) improving, at the same time, the lower heating value (LHV) of the gas and carbon conversion.

We study theoretically the stability of two superposed fluid layers heated laterally. The fluids are supposed to be immiscible, the interface undeformable and of infinite horizontal extension. Combined thermocapillary and buoyancy forces give rise to a basic flow when a temperature difference is applied. The calculations are performed for a melt of GaAs under a layer of molten B2 O3 , a configuration of considerable technological importance. Four dif- ferent flow patterns and five temperature configurations are found for the basic state in this system. A linear stability analysis shows that the basic state may be destabilized by oscilla- tory motions leading to the so-called hydrothermal waves. Depending on the relative height of the two layers these hydrothermal waves propagate parallel or perpendicular to the temperature gradient. This analysis reveals that these perturbations can alter significantly the liquid flow in the liquid-encapsulated crystal growth techniques.

This work is devoted to the theoretical study of the stability of two superposed horizontal liquid layers bounded by two solid planes and subjected to a horizontal temperature gradient. The liquids are supposed to be immiscible with a nondeformable interface. The forces acting on the system are buoyancy and interfacial tension. Four different flow patterns and temperature profiles are found for the basic state. A linear perturbative analysis with respect to two- and three-dimensional perturbations reveals the existence of three kinds of patterns. Depending on the relative height of both liquids several situations are predicted: either wave propa- gation from cold to the hot regions, or waves propagating in the opposite direction or still stationary longitu- dinal rolls. The behavior of three different pairs of liquids which have been used in experiments on bilayers under vertical gradient by other authors have been examined. The instability mechanisms are discussed and a qualitative interpretation of the different behaviors exhibited by the system is provided. In some configurations it is possible to find a codimension-two point created by the interaction of two Hopf modes with different frequencies and wave numbers. These results suggest to consider two liquid layers as an interesting prototype ? nard-Marangoni problem.

The type-I intermittency route to (or out of) chaos is investigated within the horizontal visibility (HV) graph theory. For that purpose, we address the trajectories generated by unimodal maps close to an inverse tangent bifurcation and construct their associatedHVgraphs. We showhowthe alternation of laminar episodes and chaotic bursts imprints a fingerprint in the resulting graph structure. Accordingly, we derive a phenomenological theory that predicts quantitative values for several network parameters. In particular, we predict that the characteristic power-law scaling of the mean length of laminar trend sizes is fully inherited by the variance of the graph degree distribution, in good agreement with the numerics. We also report numerical evidence on how the characteristic power-law scaling of the Lyapunov exponent as a function of the distance to the tangent bifurcation is inherited in the graph by an analogous scaling of block entropy functionals defined on the graph. Furthermore, we are able to recast the full set of HV graphs generated by intermittent dynamics into a renormalization-group framework, where the fixed points of its graph-theoretical renormalization-group flow account for the different types of dynamics. We also establish that the nontrivial fixed point of this flow coincides with the tangency condition and that the corresponding invariant graph exhibits extremal entropic properties.

ABSTRACT The main objective of this work is to contribute to answer the question: to which extend can the wind tunnel testing contribute to determine the flow characteristics that affect the dynamic response of wind turbines operating in highly complex terrains?. This question is not new, indeed, the debate in the scientific community was opened in the first third of the past century and it is still intensely alive. The accepted approach to face this problem consists in analysing a given case study where full-scale tests, computational modelling and wind tunnel testing are applied to the same topography. This is neither easy nor cheap. This is is the reason why since the Askervein experience in 1988, the atmospheric flow modellers community had to wait till 2007 when the Bolund experiment was setup with a deployment of technical means equivalent (considering the evolution of the sensor and computing techniques). The problem is so manifold that both experiences were restricted to neutral conditions without Coriolis effects in order to reduce the complexity. This is the framework in which this PhD has been carried out. The flow topology over the Bolund Island has been studied by replicating the Bolund experiment in the IDR A9 and ACLA16 wind tunnels. Two mock-ups of the Bolund island were manufactured at two scales of 1:230 and 1:115. The in-flow in the empty wind tunnel simulating the incoming atmospheric boundary layer was in the transitionally rough regime and used as a reference case. The 1:230 model was tested in the A9 wind tunnel to measure surface pressure. The mapping of the pressure coefficient across the island gave a visualisation and estimation of a detachment region on the top of the escarpment in front of the island. Time resolved instantaneous pressure measurements illustrated the non-steadiness in the detachment region. The 1:115 model was tested using 3C hot-wires(HW) and 2C Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). Measurements at met masts M3, M6, M7 and M8 and along Line 270°were taken to replicate the result of the Bolund experiment. The flow was characterised by the speed-up ratio, normalised increment of the turbulent kinetic energy, inclination angle and turning angle. Results along line 270°at heights of 2 m and 5 m compared very well with the full-scale results of the Bolund experiment. Vertical profiles at the met masts showed a significant agreement with the full-scale results. The analysis of the Reynolds stresses and the spectral analysis at the met mast locations gave a varied level of agreement at some locations while clear mismatch at others. The horizontal mapping of the flow field, for a 270°wind direction, allowed to characterise the behaviour of the intermittent recirculation bubble on top of the front escarpment followed by a relaxation region and the presence of a shear layer in the lee side of the island. Further detailed velocity measurements were taken at cross-flow planes over the island to study the flow structures on the island. A longitudinal vortex-like structure with high mean velocity gradients and high turbulent kinetic energy was characterised on the escarpment and evolving downstream. This flow structure is a challenge to the numerical models while posing a threat to wind farm designers when siting wind turbines. Spatial distribution of Reynold stresses were presented from 3C HW and PIV measurements. These values are not common results from usual wind tunnel measurements and very useful for modellers using large eddy simulation (LES). An interpretation of the wind tunnel results in terms of usefulness to wind farm designers is given. Evolution and variation of the flow parameters along measurement lines, planes and surfaces indicated how the flow field could affect wind turbine siting. Different flow properties were presented so compare the level of agreement to full-scale results and how this affected when characterising the site wind classes. The results presented suggest, under certain conditions, the robustness of the wind tunnel testing for studying flow topology over complex terrain and its capability to compare to other modelling techniques especially from the level of agreement between the different data sets presented. Additionally, some flow parameters obtained from wind tunnel measurements would have been quite difficult to be measured at full-scale or by computational means considering the state of the art. This work was carried out as a part of the activities supported by the EC as part of the FP7- PEOPLE-ITN-2008 WAUDIT project (Wind Resource Assessment Audit and Standardization) within the FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network and by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, within the framework of the ENE2012-36473, TURCO project (Determination of the Spatial Distribution of Statistic Parameters of Flow Turbulence over Complex Topographies in Wind Tunnel) belonging to the Spanish National Program of Research (Subprograma de investigación fundamental no orientada 2012). The report is organised in seven chapters and a collection of annexes. In chapter one, the problem is introduced. In chapter two the experimental setup is described. Following, in chapter three, the inflow conditions of the main wind tunnel used in this piece of research are analysed in detail. In chapter three, preliminary pressure tests results on a model of the island are presented. The main results from the Bolund experiment are replicated in chapter five. In chapter six, an identification of specific flow strutures over the island is presented and, finally, in chapter seven, conclusions and lines for future works related to the presented one are included.

Nitrification-denitrification is the traditional biological process for nitrogen removal from wastewaters (Ruiz G. et al., 2006a), being fundamental since it contributes to control the eutrophication of the receiving waters. Due to the deterioration that on the availability of the aquatic resources the anthropogenic activities have exerted, it is necessary to orient the treatment of wastewaters towards technologies that offer the greater degree of sustainability, raising innovations in the treatment. This work studied the influence of C/N ratio on denitrification and methanogenesis of urban wastewaters in an inverse fluidized bed reactor (IFBR). Previously to the accomplishment of the experimental tests with variation of C/N ratio, the start up of the IFBR was carried out in batch way, encouraging the formation and adhesion of biofilm to Extendosphere, which it was used as support. The operation in continuous way carried out from an organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.5 g CODs/L ∙ d to 4 g CODs/L ∙ d, when the steady-state was reached. The high variability of the CODs of the urban wastewaters caused delays in the stability of the reactor. Once stationary state was reached, the removal efficiency of CODs ranged from 32.36 to 66.99% to 4 g CODs/L ∙ d. In these conditions the percentage of methane in produced biogas had an average value of 85.57 ± 2.93%, being a high value compared with other studies treating anaerobically urban wastewaters. The YCH4 had an average value of 0.316 ± 0.110 LCH4/g CODrem ∙ d. The percentage of methanisation ranged from 20.50 to 100%, with an average value of 73.42 ± 25.63%. The considerable variability in the methanisation percentage occurred mainly due events of wash-out of colonized support, which caused that the metabolic activities were oriented towards formation of biofilm (anabolism) instead of methane production (catabolism). Concerning the tests with variation of C/N ratio, CODs/NO3-N ratios from 1.65 to 21.1 g CODs/g NO3-N were proved. The CODs anaerobic removal rate increased with the substrate concentration in an almost linear relation, adjusting to a kinetic of first order, which regularly appears to low concentrations of substrate. Efficiency of the denitrification process was regularly high, and it increased slightly with the CODs concentration in the influent, ranging from 73.8 to 99.1%. On the other hand, the CODs removal rate by methanogenesis increased with the substrate relative concentration (e.g., to greater CODs/NO3-N ratios), being more sensitive the methanogenesis to the substrate relative concentration that the denitrification. When the CODs/NO3-N ratio increased, the denitrification, of being the main metabolic route of use of the organic matter (compared with the methanogenesis), began to be combined with the methanogenesis. Definitively, to the proven CODs/NO3-N ratios the denitrification processes were more pronounced, being reflected by the high percentage of use of the removed CODs towards denitrification. The experimental CODs/NO3-N ratio to which it was possible to have been fulfilled the requirement of organic matter (in terms of CODs) for the denitrification of nitrates in urban wastewaters turned out to be approximately 7.1 g CODs/g NO3-N. It was obtained a maximum average diameter of colonized support of 266.106 ± 69.279 μm to 4 g CODs/L ∙ d, although it is necessary to indicate that appeared fluctuations in the thickness of biofilm, which had a maximum value of 50.099 μm and an average value of 37.294 ± 11.199 μm. These fluctuations could be due to the existence of preferential currents within the reactor, which did not allow an equitable access of the substrate to all the bed.

In the state of Veracruz, to the south of Mexico, there are located companies dedicated to the production of ethanol from molasses of cane sugar. The smallest, have a average production of 20,000 L ethanol/day. The effluent of production of ethanol include water of condensers, water originated from the cleanliness of tanks of fermentation and vinasses, the above mentioned are more effluent pollutants in the distilleries, for the poor organic matter degradability. The vinasses are generated in high volumes, producing from 12 to 15 L of vinasses per every liter of distilled ethanol. These effluent are characterized by its high temperature, pH acid and a high concentration of DQO as well as high concentration of TS. The determination of the anaerobic degradability of a waste water, it allows to estimate the fraction of DQO that can be transformed potentially into methane and the recalcitrant DQO that stays in the effluent. For the development of degradability test, it is important to consider factors related to the composition of the water to be treated, composition of the sludge and the conditions under which the test is carried out. The anaerobic digestion of industrial wastes water is used commonly in the whole world, it offers significant advantages for the treatment of effluent highly loaded. The anaerobic treatment of industrial wastes water include technologies with biofilms, this anaerobic treatment whit biofilms systems, is a well-established technology for treatment of industrial effluents. The Anaerobic Inverse Fluidized Bed Reactor (IFBR) has been developed to provide biological treatment of high strength organic wastewater for their large specific surface and their low energy requirements for fluidization. In this work, there is carried out the analysis of a process of production of ethanol, identifying the effluent ones that are generated in the process. One determined that the effluent end is composed principally by the vinasses originated from the process of distillation. In the characterization of the vinasses originated from the process of production of ethanol from cane sugar molasses, there were average values of DQO of 193.35 gDQO/L, average values of solid of 109.78 gST/L and pH of 4.64. In this investigation there was carried out a anaerobic degradability test of the vinasses generated in the production of ethanol. In the characterization of the sludge used in the essay, the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) was 0.14 gDQO/gSSV.d. The average removal of DQO of the vinasses was 62.7 %, k equal to 0.031 h-1 was obtained one and a rate of removal substrate of 1.26 gDQO/d. The methane yield was 0.19 LCH4/gDQO removed and the anaerobic biodegradability was a 54.1 %. This study describes the performance of IFBR with Extendospher®, for the treatment of vinasses. The start-up was made in batch, increasing gradually the Organic Load Rate (OLR): 0.5, 1.0, 3.3, 6.8 and 10.4 g COD/L.d. Different Hydraulic Retention Times (HRT) were evaluated: 10, 5 and 1 days. During the operation in batch, the COD removal obtained was of 81 %, and for OLR of 0.5, 1.0, 3.3, 6.8 g COD/L.d the removal obtained was 58, 67, 59 and 50 % respectively. For a maximum OLR of 10.4 g COD/L.d, the COD removal was 38 %, and the system presented instability and decrease of the yield methane. The methane production initiated after 110 days of the start-up of the IFBR, to organic load rate of 1.0 g COD/L.d. The system reached values in the methane yield from 0.15 up to 0.34 LCH4/g CODremoved, for the different organic load rates. During the operation to a constant OLR of 6.4 g COD/L.d, and a HRT of 1 day, the Anaerobic Inverse Fluidized Bed Reactor reached a maximum efficiency of removal of 52 %.

Increasingly, studies of genes and genomes are indicating that considerable horizontal transfer has occurred between prokaryotes. Extensive horizontal transfer has occurred for operational genes (those involved in housekeeping), whereas informational genes (those involved in transcription, translation, and related processes) are seldomly horizontally transferred. Through phylogenetic analysis of six complete prokaryotic genomes and the identification of 312 sets of orthologous genes present in all six genomes, we tested two theories describing the temporal flow of horizontal transfer. We show that operational genes have been horizontally transferred continuously since the divergence of the prokaryotes, rather than having been exchanged in one, or a few, massive events that occurred early in the evolution of prokaryotes. In agreement with earlier studies, we found that differences in rates of evolution between operational and informational genes are minimal, suggesting that factors other than rate of evolution are responsible for the observed differences in horizontal transfer. We propose that a major factor in the more frequent horizontal transfer of operational genes is that informational genes are typically members of large, complex systems, whereas operational genes are not, thereby making horizontal transfer of informational gene products less probable (the complexity hypothesis).
