Like large insects, micro air vehicles operate at low Reynolds numbers O(1; 000 - 10; 000) in a regime characterized by separated flow and strong vortices. The leading-edge vortex has been identified as a significant source of high lift on insect wings, but the conditions required for the formation of a stably attached leading-edge vortex are not yet known. The waving wing is designed to model the translational phase of an insect wing stroke by preserving the unsteady starting and stopping motion as well as three-dimensionality in both wing geometry (via a finite-span wing) and kinematics (via wing rotation). The current study examines the effect of the spanwise velocity gradient on the development of the leading-edge vortex along the wing as well as the effects of increasing threedimensionalityby decreasing wing aspect ratio from four to two. Dye flow visualization and particle image velocimetry reveal that the leading-edge vortices that form on a sliding or waving wing have a very high aspect ratio. The structure of the flow is largely two-dimensional on both sliding and waving wings and there is minimal interaction between the leading-edge vortices and the tip vortex. Significant spanwise flow was observed on the waving wing but not on the sliding wing. Despite the increased three-dimensionality on the aspect ratio 2 waving wing, there is no evidence of an attached leading-edge vortex and the structure of the flow is very similar to that on the higher-aspect-ratio wing and sliding wing. © Copyright 2010.

In this paper, the authors investigate the electromagnetic properties of stacks of high temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductors with a particular focus on calculating the total transport AC loss. The cross-section of superconducting cables and coils is often modeled as a two-dimensional stack of coated conductors, and these stacks can be used to estimate the AC loss of a practical device. This paper uses a symmetric two dimensional (2D) finite element model based on the H formulation, and a detailed investigation into the effects of a magnetic substrate on the transport AC loss of a stack is presented. The number of coated conductors in each stack is varied from 1 to 150, and three types of substrate are compared: non-magnetic weakly magnetic and strongly magnetic. The non-magnetic substrate model is comparable with results from existing models for the limiting cases of a single tape (Norris) and an infinite stack (Clem). The presence of a magnetic substrate increases the total AC loss of the stack, due to an increased localized magnetic flux density, and the stronger the magnetic material, the further the flux penetrates into the stack overall. The AC loss is calculated for certain tapes within the stack, and the differences and similarities between the losses throughout the stack are explained using the magnetic flux penetration and current density distributions in those tapes. The ferromagnetic loss of the substrate itself is found to be negligible in most cases, except for small magnitudes of current. Applying these findings to practical applications, where AC transport current is involved, superconducting coils should be wound where possible using coated conductors with a non-magnetic substrate to reduce the total AC loss in the coil. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Stereoscopic displays present different images to the two eyes and thereby create a compelling three-dimensional (3D) sensation. They are being developed for numerous applications including cinema, television, virtual prototyping, and medical imaging. However, stereoscopic displays cause perceptual distortions, performance decrements, and visual fatigue. These problems occur because some of the presented depth cues (i.e., perspective and binocular disparity) specify the intended 3D scene while focus cues (blur and accommodation) specify the fixed distance of the display itself. We have developed a stereoscopic display that circumvents these problems. It consists of a fast switchable lens synchronized to the display such that focus cues are nearly correct. The system has great potential for both basic vision research and display applications. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

The self-organization of the helical structure of chiral nematic liquid crystals combined with their sensitivity to electric fields makes them particularly interesting for low-threshold, wavelength tunable laser devices. We have studied these organic lasers in detail, ranging from the influence specific macroscopic properties, such as birefringence and order parameter, have on the output characteristics, to practical systems in the form of two-dimensional arrays, double-pass geometries and paintable lasers. Furthermore, even though chiral nematics are responsive to electric fields there is no facile means by which the helix periodicity can be adjusted, thereby allowing laser wavelength tuning, without adversely affecting the optical quality of the resonator. Therefore, in addition to studying the liquid crystal lasers, we have focused on finding a novel method with which to alter the periodicity of a chiral nematic using electric fields without inducing defects and degrading the optical quality factor of the resonator. This paper presents an overview of our research, describing (i) the correlation between laser output and material properties,(ii) the importance of the gain medium,(iii) multicolor laser arrays, and (iv) high slope efficiency (>60%) silicon back-plane devices. Overall we conclude that these materials have great potential for use in versatile organic laser systems.

Image-based (i.e., photo/videogrammetry) and time-of-flight-based (i.e., laser scanning) technologies are typically used to collect spatial data of infrastructure. In order to help architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries make cost-effective decisions in selecting between these two technologies with respect to their settings, this paper makes an attempt to measure the accuracy, quality, time efficiency, and cost of applying image-based and time-of-flight-based technologies to conduct as-built 3D reconstruction of infrastructure. In this paper, a novel comparison method is proposed, and preliminary experiments are conducted. The results reveal that if the accuracy and quality level desired for a particular application is not high (i.e., error < 10 cm, and completeness rate > 80%), image-based technologies constitute a good alternative for time-of-flight-based technologies and significantly reduce the time and cost needed for collecting the data on site.

A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is proposed to solve the electromagnetic problems involving transport current and background field of a high-T c superconducting (HTS) system. The model is characterized by the E-J power law and H-formulation, and is successfully implemented using finite element software. We first discuss the model in detail, including the mesh methods, boundary conditions and computing time. To validate the 3D model, we calculate the ac loss and trapped field solution for a bulk material and compare the results with the previously verified 2D solutions and an analytical solution. We then apply our model to test some typical problems such as superconducting bulk array and twisted conductors, which cannot be tackled by the 2D models. The new 3D model could be a powerful tool for researchers and engineers to investigate problems with a greater level of complicity.

The desire to design more efficient transport aircraft has led to many different attempts to minimize drag. One approach is the use of three-dimensional shock control bumps, which have gained popularity in the research community as simple, efficient and robust devices capable of reducing the wave drag of transonic wings. This paper presents a computational study of the performance of three-dimensional bumps, relating key bump design variables to the overall wing aerodynamic performance. An efficient parameterization scheme allows three-dimensional bumps to be directly compared to two-dimensional designs, indicating that two-dimensional bumps are capable of greater design point aerodynamic performance in the transonic regime. An advantage of three-dimensional bumps lies in the production of streamwise vortices, such that, while two-dimensional bumps are capable of superior performance near the design point, three-dimensional bumps are capable of breakingup regions of separated flow at high Mach numbers, suggesting improvement in terms of buffet margin. A range of bump designs are developed that exhibit a tradeoff between design point aerodynamic efficiency and improvementinbuffet margin, indicating the potential for bespoke designs to be generated for different sections of a wing based on its flow characteristics. Measurements and predictions are made of a short cowl co-flowing jet with a bypass ratio of 8:1. The Reynolds number for computations and measurements are matched at 300,000 and the Mach numbers representative of realistic jet conditions with core and co flow velocities of 240m/s and 216m/s respectively. The low Reynolds number of the measurements makes the case well suited to the assessment of large eddy resolving computational strategies. Also, the nozzle concentricity was carefully controlled to deal with the emerging metastability issues of jets with coflow. Measurements of mean quantities and turbulence statistics are made using both two dimensional coincident LDA and PIV systems. The computational simulations are completed on a modest 12×106 mesh. The simulation is now being run on a 50×106 mesh using hybrid RANSNLES (Numerical Large Eddy Simulation). Close to the nozzle wall a k-l RANS model is used. For an axisymmetric jet, comparison is made between simulations which use NLES, RANSNLES and also a simple imposed velocity profile where the nozzle is not modeled. The use of a near wall RANS model is shown to be beneficial. When compared with the measurements the NLES results are encouraging. Hybrid numerical large eddy simulation (NLES) and detached eddy simulation (DES) methods are assessed on a labyrinth seal geometry. A high sixth order discretization scheme is used and is validated using a test case of a two dimensional vortex. The hybrid approach adopts a new blending function and along with DES is initially validated using a simple cavity flow. The NLES method is also validated outside of RANS zones. It is found that there is very little resolved turbulence in the cavity for the DES simulation. For the labyrinth seal calculations the DES approach is problematic giving virtually no resolved turbulence content. It is seen that over the tooth tips the extent of the LES region is small and is likely to be a strong contributor to excessive flow damping in these regions. On the other hand the zonal Hamilton-Jacobi approach did not suffer from this trait. In both cases the meshes used are considered to be hybrid RANS-LES adequate. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) the DES profiles are in agreement with the time mean experimental measurements. It is concluded that for an inexperienced CFD practitioner this could have wider implications particularly if transient results such as unsteady loading are desired. This paper investigates the design of winglet tips for unshrouded high pressure turbine rotors, considering aerodynamic and thermal performance simultaneously. A novel parameterization method has been developed to alter the tip geometry of a rotor blade. A design survey of un-cooled, flat-tipped winglets is performed using RANS calculations for a single rotor at engine representative operating conditions. Compared to a plain tip, large efficiency gains can be realized by employing an overhang around the full perimeter of the blade, but the overall heat load rises significantly. By employing an overhang on only the early suction surface, significant efficiency improvements can be obtained without increasing the overall heat transfer to the blade. The flow physics are explored in detail to explain the results. For a plain tip, the leakage and passage vortices interact to create a three-dimensional impingement onto the blade suction surface, causing high heat transfer. The addition of an overhang on the early suction surface displaces the tip leakage vortex away from the blade, weakening the impingement effect and reducing the heat transfer on the blade. The winglets reduce the aerodynamic losses by unloading the tip section, reducing the leakage flow rate, turning the leakage flow in a more streamwise direction and reducing the interaction between the leakage fluid and endwall flows. Generally these effects are most effective close to the leading edge of the tip, where the leakage flow is subsonic.

The trapped magnetic field is examined in bulk high-temperature superconductors that are artificially drilled along their c-axis. The influence of the hole pattern on the magnetization is studied and compared by means of numerical models and Hall probe mapping techniques. To this aim, we consider two bulk YBCO samples with a rectangular cross-section that are drilled each by six holes arranged either on a rectangular lattice (sample I) or on a centered rectangular lattice (sample II). For the numerical analysis, three different models are considered for calculating the trapped flux: (i), a two-dimensional (2D) Bean model neglecting demagnetizing effects and flux creep, (ii), a 2D finite-element model neglecting demagnetizing effects but incorporating magnetic relaxation in the form of an E-J power law, and, (iii), a 3D finite element analysis that takes into account both the finite height of the sample and flux creep effects. For the experimental analysis, the trapped magnetic flux density is measured above the sample surface by Hall probe mapping performed before and after the drilling process. The maximum trapped flux density in the drilled samples is found to be smaller than that in the plain samples. The smallest magnetization drop is found for sample II, with the centered rectangular lattice. This result is confirmed by the numerical models. In each sample, the relative drops that are calculated independently with the three different models are in good agreement. As observed experimentally, the magnetization drop calculated in the sample II is the smallest one and its relative value is comparable to the measured one. By contrast, the measured magnetization drop in sample (1) is much larger than that predicted by the simulations, most likely because of a change of the microstructure during the drilling process.

Several options of fuel assembly design are investigated for a BWR core operating in a closed self-sustainable Th-233U fuel cycle. The designs rely on an axially heterogeneous fuel assembly structure consisting of a single axial fissile zone "sandwiched" between two fertile blanket zones, in order to improve fertile to fissile conversion ratio. The main objective of the study was to identify the most promising assembly design parameters, dimensions of fissile and fertile zones, for achieving net breeding of 233U. The design challenge, in this respect, is that the fuel breeding potential is at odds with axial power peaking and the core minimum critical power ratio (CPR), hence limiting the maximum achievable core power rating. Calculations were performed with the BGCore system, which consists of the MCNP code coupled with fuel depletion and thermo-hydraulic feedback modules. A single 3-dimensional fuel assembly having reflective radial boundaries was modeled applying simplified restrictions on the maximum centerline fuel temperature and the CPR. It was found that axially heterogeneous fuel assembly design with a single fissile zone can potentially achieve net breeding, while matching conventional BWR core power rating under certain restrictions to the core loading pattern design. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The paper shows that generating cross sections using three-dimensional geometry and application of axial discontinuity factors are essential requirements for obtaining accurate prediction of criticality and zone average reaction rates in highly heterogeneous RBWR-type systems using computer codes based on diffusion theory approximation. The same methodology as presented here will be used to generate discontinuity factors for each axial interface between fuel assembly zones to ensure preservation of reaction rates in each zone and global multiplication factor. The use of discontinuity factors and three-dimensional cross sections may allow for a coarser energy group structure which is desirable to simplify and speed up transient calculations.

Hybrid numerical large eddy simulation (NLES), detached eddy simulation (DES) and URANS methods are assessed on a cavity and a labyrinth seal geometry. A high sixth-order discretization scheme is used and is validated using the test case of a two-dimensional vortex. The hybrid approach adopts a new blending function. For the URANS simulations, the flow within the cavity remains steady, and the results show significant variation between models. Surprisingly, low levels of resolved turbulence are observed in the cavity for the DES simulation, and the cavity shear layer remains two dimensional. The hybrid RANS-NLES approach does not suffer from this trait. For the labyrinth seal, both the URANS and DES approaches give low levels of resolved turbulence. The zonal Hamilton-Jacobi approach on the other had given significantly more resolved content. Both DES and hybrid RANS-NLES give good agreement with the experimentally measured velocity profiles. Again, there is significant variation between the URANS models, and swirl velocities are overpredicted. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
