Transmission of bulk power at high voltages over very long distances has become very imperative. At present, throughout the globe, this task has been mostly performed by overhead transmission lines. The dual task of mechanically supporting and electrically isolating the live phase conductors from the support tower is performed by string insulators. Whether in clean condition or under polluted conditions, the electrical stress distribution along the insulators governs the possible flashover, which is quite detrimental to the system. However, a reliable data on stress distribution in commonly employed string insulators are rather scarce. Considering this, the present work has made an attempt to study accurately, the field distribution in 220 kV strings for six different types of porcelain/ceramic insulators (Normal and Antifog discs) used for high voltage transmission. The surface charge simulation method is employed for the required field computation. Voltage and electric stress distribution is deduced and compared across different types of discs. A comparison on normalised surface resistance, which is an indicator for the stress concentration under polluted condition, is also attempted.

In this talk I discuss some aspects of the study of electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the fermions, in the context of R-parity violating (\rpv) Supersymmetry (SUSY). I will start with a brief general discussion of how dipole moments, in general, serve as a probe of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) and an even briefer summary of \rpv SUSY. I will follow by discussing a general method of analysis for obtaining the leading fermion mass dependence of the dipole moments and present its application to \rpv SUSY case. Then I will summarise the constraints that the analysis of $e,n$ and $Hg$ EDMs provide for the case of trilinear \rpv SUSY couplings and make a few comments on the case of bilinear \rpv, where the general method of analysis proposed by us does not work.

Molecules exhibiting a thermotropic liquid-crystalline property have acquired significant importance due to their sensitivity to external stimuli such as temperature, mechanical forces, and electric and magnetic fields. As a result, several novel mesogens have been synthesized by the introduction of various functional groups in the vicinity of the aromatic core as well as in the side chains and their properties have been studied. In the present study, we report three-ring mesogens with hydroxyl groups at one terminal. These mesogens were synthesized by a multistep route, and structural characterization was accomplished by spectral techniques. The mesophase properties were studied by hot-stage optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. An enantiotropic nematic phase was noticed for lower homologues, while an additional smectic C phase was found for higher homologues. Solid-state high-resolution natural abundance (13)C NMR studies of a typical mesogen in the solid phase and in the mesophases have been carried out. The (13)C NMR spectrum of the mesogen in the smectic C and nematic phases indicated spontaneous alignment of the molecule in the magnetic field. By utilizing the two-dimensional separated local field (SLF) NMR experiment known as SAMPI4, (13)C-(1)H dipolar couplings have been obtained, which were utilized to determine the orientational order parameters of the mesogen.

Highly (110) preferred orientated antiferroelectric PbZrO3 (PZ) and La-modified PZ thin films have been fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using sol-gel process. Dielectric properties, electric field induced ferroelectric polarization, and the temperature dependence of the dielectric response have been explored as a function of composition. The Tc has been observed to decrease by ∼ 17 °C per 1 mol % of La doping. Double hysteresis loops were seen with zero remnant polarization and with coercive fields in between 176 and 193 kV/cm at 80 °C for antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase transformation. These slim loops have been explained by the high orientation of the films along the polar direction of the antiparallel dipoles of a tetragonal primitive cell and by the strong electrostatic interaction between La ions and oxygen ions in an ABO3 perovskite unit cell. High quality films exhibited very low loss factor less than 0.015 at room temperature and pure PZ; 1 and 2 mol % La doped PZs have shown the room temperature dielectric constant of 135, 219, and 142 at the frequency of 10 kHz. The passive layer effects in these films have been explained by Curie constants and Curie temperatures. The ac conductivity and the corresponding Arrhenius plots have been shown and explained in terms of doping effect and electrode resistance.

The numerical solutions of Boltzmann transpott equation for the energy distribution of electrons moving in crossed fields in nitrogen have been obtained for 100 ÿ E/p ÿ 1000 V M-1 Torr-1 and for 0ÿ B/p ÿ 0.02 Tesla Torr-1 using the concept of energy dependent effective field intensity. From the derived distribution functions the electron mean energy, the tranaverse and perpendicular drift velocities and the averaged effective field intensity (Eavef) which signifies the average field intensity experienced by electron swarms in E àB field have been derived. The maximum difference between the electron mean energy for a given E ÃÂB field and that corresponding to Eavef/p (p is the gas pressure) is found to be within ñ3.5%.

As aircraft technology is moving towards more electric architecture, use of electric motors in aircraft is increasing. Axial flux BLDC motors (brushless DC motors) are becoming popular in aero application because of their ability to meet the demand of light weight, high power density, high efficiency and high reliability. Axial flux BLDC motors, in general, and ironless axial flux BLDC motors, in particular, come with very low inductance Owing to this, they need special care to limit the magnitude of ripple current in motor winding. In most of the new more electric aircraft applications, BLDC motor needs to be driven from 300 or 600 Vdc bus. In such cases, particularly for operation from 600 Vdc bus, insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based inverters are used for BLDC motor drive. IGBT-based inverters have limitation on increasing the switching frequency, and hence they are not very suitable for driving BLDC motors with low winding inductance. In this study, a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed to drive axial flux BLDC motors. Operation of a BLDC motor driven from three-level NPC inverter is explained and experimental results are presented.

This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. Boost converter is used to boost to solar powered battery voltage to 24V, further an automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using fly-back topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from 12V battery, which is powered by the solar, for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

Since the end of second world war, extra high voltage ac transmission has seen its development. The distances between generating and load centres as well as the amount of power to be handled increased tremendously for last 50 years. The highest commercial voltage has increased to 765 kV in India and 1,200 kV in many other countries. The bulk power transmission has been mostly performed by overhead transmission lines. The dual task of mechanically supporting and electrically isolating the live phase conductors from the support tower is performed by string insulators. The bulk of power transmission from the generating stations to the load centres is carried through overhead lines. The distances involved could span several hundreds of kilometres. To minimize line losses, power transmission over such long distances is carried out at high voltages (several hundreds of kV). A network of outdoor lines operating at different voltages has been found to be the most economical method of power delivery. The disc insulators perform dual task of mechanically supporting and electrically isolating the live phase conductors from the support tower. These insulators have to perform under various environmental conditions; hence the electrical stress distribution along the insulators governs the possible flashover, which is quite detrimental to the system. In view of this the present investigation aims to simulate the surface electric field stress on different types of porcelain/ceramic insulators; both normal and anti-fog type discs which are used for high voltage transmission/distribution systems are considered. The surface charge simulation method is employed for the field computation to simulate potential, electric field, surface and bulk/volume stress.

The phenomenon of resistive switching (RS) has been demonstrated in several non-magnetic and some magnetic oxide systems, however the ``magnetic'' aspect of magnetic oxides has not been emphasized especially in terms of low field tunability. In our work, we examined the CoFe2O4/La0.66Sr0.34MnO3 all-magnetic oxide interface system for RS and discovered a very sharp (bipolar) transition at room temperature that can be gated with high sensitivity by low magnetic fields (similar to 0-100 mT). By using a number of characterizations, we show that this is an interface effect, which may open up interesting directions for manipulation of the RS phenomenon. We calculate the thermopower of monolayer graphene in various circumstances. We consider acoustic phonon scattering which might be the operative scattering mechanism in freestanding films and predict that the thermopower will be linear in any induced gap in the system. Further, the thermopower peaks at the same value of chemical potential (tunable by gate voltage) independent of the gap. We show that in the semiclassical approximation, the thermopower in a magnetic field saturates at high field to a value which can be calculated exactly and is independent of the details of the scattering. This effect might be observable experimentally. We also note that a Yukawa scattering potential can be used to fit experimental data for the thermopower for reasonable values of the screening length parameter.

Ceramic/Porcelain suspension disc insulators are widely used in power systems to provide electrical insulation and mechanically support for high-voltage transmission lines. These insulators are subjected to a variety of stresses, including mechanical, electrical and environmental. These stresses act in unison. The exact nature and magnitude of these stresses vary significantly and depends on insulator design, application and its location. Due to various reasons the insulator disc can lose its electrical insulation properties without any noticeable mechanical failure. Such a condition while difficult to recognize, can enhance the stress on remaining healthy insulator discs in the string further may lead to a flashover. To understand the stress enhancement due to faulty discs in a string, attempt has been made to simulate the potential and electric field profiles for various disc insulators presently used in the country. The results of potential and electric filed stress obtained for normal and strings with faulty insulator discs are presented.
Correlation between enhanced lattice polarizability and high piezoelectric response in BiScO3-PbTiO3
Resumo:
Piezoelectric and ex situ electric-field induced structural studies were carried out on closely spaced compositions in the morphotropic phase boundary region of (1 - x) PbTiO3-(x)BiScO3. While the common approach of zero field structural analysis failed to provide a unique relationship between the anomalous piezoresponse of x = 0.3725 and structural factor(s), ex situ study of electric-field induced structural changes revealed that the composition exhibiting the highest piezoelectric response is the one which also exhibits significantly enhanced polarizability of the lattices of both coexisting (monoclinic and tetragonal) phases. The enhanced lattice polarizability manifests as a significant fraction of the monoclinic phase transforming irreversibly to the tetragonal phase after electric poling. This paper deals with the coupling of High Power Microwaves with a buried twisted pair cable. The electric field at a distance of 1km from the HPM antenna has been computed and is used for further computation of induced voltage and current. It is found that the peak of the induced current and voltage in a buried unshielded twisted pair cable at a distance of 1km from an HPM antenna of power level 10GW is 20A and 2kV respectively.
