IV. Promissory Notes, 1790-1793

This series consists of handwritten slips written by the borrower with the promise of repayment with interest to a specified lender. Some of the notes reflect loans made to the Butler by members of the community, and others are promissory notes to Adams signed by Harvard students.

VII. Calculations, [1794]

One sheet of paper arranged by columns for the years 1792, 1793, 1794 with currency amounts and final sums below. "Papers & notes of Thomas Adams" written on verso.

Bills Dr. to Tho. Adams late Coll. Butler, 1791

The paper-covered book contains a two column debit and credit entry section for students created by Thomas Adams and updated by Samuel Shapleigh for the Classes of 1792 through 1794. The final page includes the note, "The above is the Balance due to me as Butler of College- Cambridge Novr 15, 1791--Tho Adams." The book includes annotations made at a later date noting students not found in other College records. The cover of the book features an engraving of a young woman in profile.

Correspondence with James Sullivan, 1789-1792

Includes one bill to James Sullivan for fees incurred by William Sullivan (AB 1792). Also includes receipt for payment.

Includes response and receipt for payment of £10 from butler Samuel Shapleigh.

Letter from Thomas Thompson to Samuel Shapleigh, 10 October 1791

Letter arranges transfer of £50 from Thompson to Shapleigh through Capt. Luke Wilder.

Letter from Mr. Pike to Samuel Shapleigh, 17 May 1792

Letter arranges payment to Shapleigh for an arithmetic book for Mr. Thompson. Also includes a receipt dated 17 July 1792 from Shapleigh for £2.10 for the arithmetic book.

Letter from Mr. Davis to Samuel Shapleigh, 12 July 1793

In this letter, Davis writes Shapleigh that he will not attend commencement.

Letter from Mr. Davis to Samuel Shapleigh, 9 November 1793

Davis requests Shapleigh to send him the remainder of Mr. Adams' bills for settlement.
