This thesis focuses on the economic relations in the interior of the Portuguese America, more specifically in Pernambuco Captancy in the 17th Century, concerning the discussion about center-periphery relationship and also the context of Brazilian colonial history. In addition, it portrays the exportations of leather to Portugal, their consequences in the Captaincy of Pernambuco and the businessmen involved in the trade and manufacturing of that product. In order to accomplish this work, manuscripts of Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (Ultramarine Historical Archives), colonial narratives and maps of the mercantile loads have been used so that one can visualize that the manufacturing of leather and other products have provided a social and economical connection among Pernambuco, Recife as trade center, Olinda as administrative municipality and Portugal

This paper presents a proposal for the semantic treatment of ambiguous homographic forms in Brazilian Portuguese, and to offer linguistic strategies for its computational implementation in Systems of Natural Language Processing (SNLP). Pustejovsky's Generative Lexicon was used as a theoretical model. From this model, the Qualia Structure - QS (and the Formal, Telic, Agentive and Constitutive roles) was selected as one of the linguistic and semantic expedients for the achievement of disambiguation of homonym forms. So that analyzed and treated data could be manipulated, we elaborated a Lexical Knowledge Base (LKB) where lexical items are correlated and interconnected by different kinds of semantic relations in the QS and ontological information.

It is already known that the behaviour of the honeybee Apis mellifera is influenced by the Earth's magnetic field. Recently it has been proposed that iron-rich granules found inside the fat body cells of this honeybee had small magnetite crystals that were responsible for this behaviour. In the present work, we studied the iron containing granules from queens of two species of honeybees (A. mellifera and Scaptotrigona postica) by electron microscopy methods in order to clarify this point. The granules were found inside rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis of granules from A. mellifera showed the presence of iron, phosphorus and calcium. The same analysis performed on the granules of S. postica also indicated the presence of these elements along with the additional element magnesium. The granules of A. mellifera were composed of apoferritin-like particles in the periphery while in the core, clusters of organised particles resembling holoferritin were seen. The larger and more mineralised granules of S. postica presented structures resembling ferritin cores in the periphery, and smaller electron dense particles inside the bulk. Electron spectroscopic images of the granules from A. mellifera showed that iron, oxygen and phosphorus were co-localised in the ferritin-like deposits. These results indicate that the iron-rich granules of these honeybees are formed by accumulation of ferritin and its degraded forms together with elements present inside the rough endoplasmic reticulum, such as phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. It is suggested that the high level of phosphate in the milieu would prevent the crystallisation of iron oxides in these structures, making very unlikely their participation in magnetoreception mechanisms. Problem statement: One of the current requirements of agroecosystem management is the maintenance of biodiversity. Manual sugarcane harvesting with the previous burning of straw has been gradually replaced by mechanical harvesting in Brazil. However, the diversity of Formicidae, which can be a natural pest controller, has not been studied in this new system yet. Approach: This study was carried out to assess the diversity of ants in an exclusively mechanically harvested sugarcane culture based on the hypothesis that species richness and abundance will increase with the deposition of straw in this culture system. Ants were sampled using pitfall traps in six sugarcane cultivars during three consecutive harvest cycles. Results: A total of 8,139 ants, distributed in 39 species, were collected. Richness, abundance and diversity differed between harvest cycles, especially in the first cycle, when the soil did not have any straw and in the two last cycles and the straw layer was about 10-15 cm thick. The communities found in the second and third cycles were similar and the maintenance of straw in the culture contributed to a greater species diversity, particularly of generalist predaceous taxa, which may contribute to the natural control of pests. Conclusion: The diversity of ants increased with straw deposition, including of taxa that may be beneficial to the sugarcane culture. However, new studies of the predatory and competition relations in this agroecosystem are necessary. © 2010 Science Publications.

The ecology of forest and savanna trees species will largely determine the structure and dynamics of the forest-savanna boundaries, but little is known about the constraints to leaf trait variation imposed by selective forces and evolutionary history during the process of savanna invasion by forest species. We compared seasonal patterns in leaf traits related to leaf structure, carbon assimilation, water, and nutrient relations in 10 congeneric species pairs, each containing one savanna species and one forest species. All individuals were growing in dystrophic oxisols in a fire-protected savanna of Central Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that forest species would be more constrained by seasonal drought and nutrient-poor soils than their savanna congeners. We also hypothesized that habitat, rather than phylogeny, would explain more of the interspecific variance in leaf traits of the studied species. We found that throughout the year forest trees had higher specific leaf area (SLA) but lower integrated water use efficiency than savanna trees. Forest and savanna species maintained similar values of predawn and midday leaf water potential along the year. Lower values were measured in the dry season. However, this was achieved by a stronger regulation of stomatal conductance and of CO2 assimilation on an area basis (A area) in forest trees, particularly toward the end of the dry season. Relative to savanna trees, forest trees maintained similar (P, K, Ca, and Mg) or slightly higher (N) leaf nutrient concentrations. For the majority of traits, more variance was explained by phylogeny, than by habitat of origin, with the exception of SLA, leaf N concentration, and A area, which were apparently subjected to different selective pressures in the savanna and forest environments. In conclusion, water shortage during extended droughts would be more limiting for forest trees than nutrient-poor soils. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Este estudo tem como temática as Representações Sociais e Relações Raciais. Analisa as representações sociais de professores acerca das relações raciais no currículo escolar do Ensino Fundamental. Esta pesquisa fundamentou-se no referencial teórico-metodológico em Moscovici (1978) e Jodelet (2001), Gomes (1995, 2006), Coelho (2006) e Silva (2006), para a análise das representações sociais, com os primeiros e, com os demais, sobre formação e relações raciais. O estudo é uma pesquisa do tipo descritiva. Utilizamos como instrumento de coleta de dados: documentos oficiais, questionário e grupo focal, dos quais participaram seis professores, que lecionavam no Ensino Fundamental no ano letivo de 2008. Os resultados do estudo revelam que os professores possuem um conhecimento acerca das relações raciais, crêem que as relações raciais no Brasil são igualitárias, acreditam que todos nós somos iguais: branco, negro e índio. Inferimos que o preconceito racial apresenta-se de forma tácita, na sociedade brasileira, o que contribui para a disseminação e ratificação do racismo e discriminação em vários setores sociais, entre os quais a escola. Ressaltamos como aproximações conclusivas que a formação de professores inicial e continuada representa um momento crucial para a formulação de uma Pedagogia que trabalhe com a diversidade cultural. A ausência dessa formação pode inviabilizar a subversão de práticas discriminatórias e estereotipias cristalizadas, em relação ao negro na escola e em seus instrumentos didático pedagógicos.

A educação é o processo de inserção de homens e mulheres no mundo cultural. E a educação, dentro das sociedades mais complexas como as capitalistas industriais, é uma atividade planejada, que implica a elaboração de objetivos e a indicação de meios para atingi-los. A compreensão das tramas de construção de práticas formalizadas é ligada a agentes que determinam os objetivos da educação e suas intenções educativas sobre Relações Raciais no Brasil. Dediquei-me às atividades de levantamento acadêmico sobre a produção de teses de doutoramento, concluídas entre os anos 2005-2010, e a respeito de pesquisas e estudos sobre Educação e Relações Raciais nos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Educação. Investiguei sobre a circulação da temática relações raciais em espaços de elaboração de políticas educacionais, especificamente programas do Governo Federal que atendam à demanda de inclusão da temática no sistema de ensino no Brasil. Pois, a partir de 2003, a temática passa por uma fase de institucionalização, principalmente pelo conjunto jurídico que estabelece novo marco legal à educação. O objeto pesquisado incluiu a configuração de práticas formalizadas que desenvolvem quadros de agentes especializados sobre relações raciais. Analisar a relação intencional entre as práticas formalizadas sobre relações raciais que prescrevem a formulação de objetivos educacionais nos diferentes níveis e instâncias sociais. Identificar os objetivos do sistema de ensino descritos nos programas do Governo Federal destinados à promoção da educação para igualdade racial. Relacionar as práticas formalizadas no campo da pesquisa em educação às intenções descritas nos programas do Governo Federal. Explicar quais os interesses que movem essas práticas formalizadas a partir das demandas educacionais da temática relações raciais. A escrita da tese pauta-se na defesa de análise em que a obrigatoriedade da temática relações raciais é movida por duas forças antagônicas, uma direcionada à constituição de direito à cidadania movida por intenções de construir uma sociedade para a igualdade racial, de oportunidades de acesso a bens materiais e simbólicos e livre de práticas discriminatórias; outra relacionada aos interesses existentes dentro de um jogo de poder a ponto de converter a educação no centro de tão acerba disputa que desfavorece dissimuladamente a equidade racial no Brasil.

In this article the social trajectory of a land occupation participant, an encamped woman (Edesmaria) who is a member of an extended landless family, is closely examined in order to demonstrate the inner workings of what is called 'the world of land occupations' in Brazil. Through a native expression (encampment time), it is demonstrated that nowadays, for some individuals, involvement in land occupations and landless workers' movements represents not just an opportunity to claim a parcel of land, but, even more importantly, a chance for social mobility and recognition. In this sense, encampment time is a social code and, as such, it not only quantifies the amount of time spent in a given encampment, but it is also a marker of prestige and status as well as a principle that organises and orders social relations in the land occupation world.
