This Paper deals with the analysis of liquid limit of soils, an inferential parameter of universal acceptance. It has been undertaken primarily to re-examine one-point methods of determination of liquid limit water contents. It has been shown by basic characteristics of soils and associated physico-chemical factors that critical shear strengths at liquid limit water contents arise out of force field equilibrium and are independent of soil type. This leads to the formation of a scientific base for liquid limit determination by one-point methods, which hitherto was formulated purely on statistical analysis of data. Available methods (Norman, 1959; Karlsson, 1961; Clayton & Jukes, 1978) of one-point liquid limit determination have been critically re-examined. A simple one-point cone penetrometer method of computing liquid limit has been suggested and compared with other methods. Experimental data of Sherwood & Ryley (1970) have been employed for comparison of different cone penetration methods. Results indicate that, apart from mere statistical considerations, one-point methods have a strong scientific base on the uniqueness of modified flow line irrespective of soil type. Normalized flow line is obtained by normalization of water contents by liquid limit values thereby nullifying the effects of surface areas and associated physico-chemical factors that are otherwise reflected in different responses at macrolevel.

Cabomba caroliniana is a submersed aquatic macrophyte that originates from the Americas and is currently invading temperate, subtropical, and tropical freshwater habitats around the world. Despite being a nuisance in many countries, little is known about its ecology. We monitored C. caroliniana populations in three reservoirs in subtropical Queensland, Australia, over 5.5 years. Although biomass, stem length, and plant density of the C. caroliniana stands fluctuated over time, they did not exhibit clear seasonal patterns. Water depth was the most important environmental factor explaining C. caroliniana abundance. Plant biomass was greatest at depths from 2–4 m and rooted plants were not found beyond 5 m. Plant density was greatest in shallow water and decreased with depth, most likely as a function of decreasing light and increasing physical stress. We tested the effect of a range of water physico-chemical parameters. The concentration of phosphorus in the water column was the variable that explained most of the variation in C. caroliniana population parameters. We found that in subtropical Australia, C. caroliniana abundance does not appear to be affected by seasonal conditions but is influenced by other environmental variables such as water depth and nutrient loading. Therefore, further spread will more likely be governed by local habitat rather than climatic conditions.

Increasing organic carbon inputs to agricultural soils through the use of pastures or crop residues has been suggested as a means of restoring soil organic carbon lost via anthropogenic activities, such as land use change. However, the decomposition and retention of different plant residues in soil, and how these processes are affected by soil properties and nitrogen fertiliser application, is not fully understood. We evaluated the rate and extent of decomposition of 13C-pulse labelled plant material in response to nitrogen addition in four pasture soils of varying physico-chemical characteristics. Microbial respiration of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) residues was monitored over 365-days. A double exponential model fitted to the data suggested that microbial respiration occurred as an early rapid and a late slow stage. A weighted three-compartment mixing model estimated the decomposition of both soluble and insoluble plant 13C (mg C kg−1 soil). Total plant material decomposition followed the alkyl C: O-alkyl C ratio of plant material, as determined by solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Urea-N addition increased the decomposition of insoluble plant 13C in some soils (≤0.1% total nitrogen) but not others (0.3% total nitrogen). Principal components regression analysis indicated that 26% of the variability of plant material decomposition was explained by soil physico-chemical characteristics (P = 0.001), which was primarily described by the C:N ratio. We conclude that plant species with increasing alkyl C: O-alkyl C ratio are better retained as soil organic matter, and that the C:N stoichiometry of soils determines whether N addition leads to increases in soil organic carbon stocks.

The electronic structures of a series of 4-substituted pyridine N-oxides and 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide are investigated using the simple Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP), a modified PPP, IEH and MINDO/2 methods. The electronic absorption band maxima and dipole moments are calculated and compared with experimental values. The photoelectron spectra of these compounds are assigned. The nature of the N-oxide group is characterized using the orbital population distributions. The antifungal activity exhibited by some of these compounds is discussed in terms of the nucleophilic frontier electron densities, superdelocalizabilities and electron acceptor properties. The effect of the electron releasing as well as the electron withdrawing substituents on the physico-chemical properties is explained.

The thermal decomposition of rare-earth trioxalatocobaltates LnCo(C2O4)3 · x H2O, where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, has been studied in flowing atmospheres of air/oxygen, argon/ nitrogen, carbon dioxide and a vacuum. The compounds decompose through three major steps, viz. dehydration, decomposition of the oxalate to an intermediate carbonate, which further decomposes to yield rare-earth cobaltite as the final product. The formation of the final product is influenced by the surrounding gas atmosphere. Studies on the thermal decomposition of photodecomposed lanthanum trioxalatocobaltate and a mechanical mixture of lanthanum oxalate and cobalt oxalate in 1 : 2 molar ratio reveal that the decomposition behaviour of the two samples is different. The drawbacks of the decomposition scheme proposed earlier have been pointed out, and logical schemes based on results obtained by TG, DTA, DTG, supplemented by various physico-chemical techniques such as gas and chemical analyses, IR and mass spectroscopy, surface area and magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray powder diffraction methods, have been proposed for the decomposition in air of rare-earth trioxalatocobaltates as well as for the photoreduced lanthanum salt and a mechanical mixture of lanthanum and cobalt oxalates.

In continuation of our work on the effect of the anion on the coordination chemistry of the rare-earth metal ions, we have now extended our studies to 4-picoline-N-oxide (4-Pie NO) complexes of rare-earth bromides. By ohangi~ the method of preparation Harrison and Watsom (1) have prepared two types of Sm(IIl) complexes and three types of Eu(III) complexes of 4-pioollne-N-Oxide in the presence of perchlorate ions. We have isolated two types of pyridine-N-Oxide complexes of rare-earth bromides, also by changing the method of preparation (2). The effect of the change of the preparative method on the composition of the lanthanide complexes is exhibited in the case of other complexes also (3-6). But our attempts to prepare 4-picoline-N-Oxide of rare-earth bromides having different stoichiometries were unsucessful . The composition of the complexes is the same for all the complexes prepared. The results of the physico-chemical studies on these 4-Pic NO complexes of rare-earth bromides are discussed in the present paper.

Ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-trp)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 1–3) and [Cu(L-phe)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 4–6) of L-tryptophan (L-trp) and L-phenylalanine (L-phe) having phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1 and 4), dipyrido[3,2-d:2,3-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine (dppz, 3 and 6), were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. Complexes 3 and 6 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and show the presence of a square pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid (L-trp or L-phe) and N,N-donor phenanthroline base bind at the equatorial plane with an aqua ligand coordinated at the elongated axial site. Complex 3 shows significant distortion from the square pyramidal geometry and a strong intramolecular – stacking interaction between the pendant indole ring of L-trp and the planar dppz aromatic moiety. All the complexes display good binding propensity to the calf thymus DNA giving an order: 3, 6 (dppz) > 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen). The binding constant (Kb) values are in the range of 2.1 × 104–1.1 × 106 mol-1 with the binding site size (s) values of 0.17–0.63. The phen and dpq complexes are minor groove binders while the dppz analogues bind at the DNA major groove. Theoretical DNA docking studies on 2 and 3 show the close proximity of two photosensitizers, viz. the indole moiety of L-trp and the quinoxaline/phenazine of the dpq/dppz bases, to the complementary DNA strands. Complexes 2 and 3 show oxidative DNA double strand breaks (dsb) of supercoiled (SC) DNA forming a significant quantity of linear DNA along with the nicked circular (NC) form on photoexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm and red light of 647.1 nm (Ar–Kr laser). Complexes 1, 5 and 6 show only single strand breaks (ssb) forming NC DNA. The red light induced DNA cleavage involves metal-assisted photosensitization of L-trp and dpq/dppz base resulting in the formation of a reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) species.

A semitheoretical equation for latent heat of vaporization has been derived and tested. The average error in predicting the value at the normal boiling point in the case of about 90 compounds, which includes polar and nonpolar liquids, is about 1.8%. A relation between latent heat of vaporization and surface tension is also derived and is shown to lead to Watson's empirical relation which gives the change of latent heat of vaporization with temperature. This gives a physico-chemical justification for Watson's empirical relation and provides a rapid method of determining latent heats by measuring surface tension.

Protein modification via enzymatic cross-linking is an attractive way for altering food structure so as to create products with increased quality and nutritional value. These modifications are expected to affect not only the structure and physico-chemical properties of proteins but also their physiological characteristics, such as digestibility in the GI-tract and allergenicity. Protein cross-linking enzymes such as transglutaminases are currently commercially available, but also other types of cross-linking enzymes are being explored intensively. In this study, enzymatic cross-linking of β-casein, the most abundant bovine milk protein, was studied. Enzymatic cross-linking reactions were performed by fungal Trichoderma reesei tyrosinase (TrTyr) and the performance of the enzyme was compared to that of transglutaminase from Streptoverticillium mobaraense (Tgase). Enzymatic cross-linking reactions were followed by different analytical techniques, such as size exclusion chromatography -Ultra violet/Visible multi angle light scattering (SEC-UV/Vis-MALLS), phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-NMR), atomic force (AFM) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The research results showed that in both cases cross-linking of β-casein resulted in the formation of high molecular mass (MM ca. 1 350 kg mol-1), disk-shaped nanoparticles when the highest enzyme dosage and longest incubation times were used. According to SEC-UV/Vis-MALLS data, commercial β-casein was cross-linked almost completely when TrTyr and Tgase were used as cross-linking enzymes. In the case of TrTyr, high degree of cross-linking was confirmed by 31P-NMR where it was shown that 91 % of the tyrosine side-chains were involved in the cross-linking. The impact of enzymatic cross-linking of β-casein on in vitro digestibility by pepsin was followed by various analytical techniques. The research results demonstrated that enzymatically cross-linked β-casein was stable under the acidic conditions present in the stomach. Furthermore, it was found that cross-linked β-casein was more resistant to pepsin digestion when compared to that of non modified β-casein. The effects of enzymatic cross-linking of β-casein on allergenicity were also studied by different biochemical test methods. On the basis of the research results, enzymatic cross-linking decreased allergenicity of native β-casein by 14 % when cross-linked by TrTyr and by 6 % after treatment by Tgase. It can be concluded that in addition to the basic understanding of the reaction mechanism of TrTyr on protein matrix, the research results obtained in this study can have high impact on various applications like food, cosmetic, medical, textile and packing sectors.

Diphenyl sulphoxide(DPSO) and dimethyl sulphoxide(DMSO) complexes of iron(II) having the composition [Fe(DPSO)6](ClO4)2, Fe(DPSO)2Cl2, Fe(DPSO)3Br2, Fe(DPSO)4I2, [Fe (DMSO)3Cl2]. DMSO and [Fe(DMSO)3Br2]. DMSO and DPSO complexes of iron(III), Fe(DPSO)2 Cl3 have been prepared and their physico-chemical properties studied. Their magnetic moments at room temperature show them to be spin-free complexes. The i.r. spectra reveal that oxygen is the donor atom in all the complexes. The electronic spectra of iron(II) complexes indicate octahedral coordination for the metal ion. A salt like structure [Fe(DPSO)4Cl2][FeCl4], is suggested for the iron (III) complex, where the cationic species has distorted octahedral structure while the anionic species has tetrahedral structure.

Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles (average diameter similar to 20 and 40 nm) are synthesized by the polymeric precursor sol-gel method and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques. Quite strikingly, in the 20 nm particles, the charge-ordered (CO) and the antiferromagnetic phases observed in the bulk below 250 K and 160 K, respectively, are completely absent. Instead, a ferromagnetic (FM) transition is observed at 95 K followed by an insulator-to-metal transition at 75 K. The 40 nm particles show a residual CO phase but a transition to the FM state also occurs, at a slightly higher temperature of 110 K.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. Background: Signal transduction events often involve transient, yet specific, interactions between structurally conserved protein domains and polypeptide sequences in target proteins. The identification and validation of these associating domains is crucial to understand signal transduction pathways that modulate different cellular or developmental processes. Bioinformatics strategies to extract and integrate information from diverse sources have been shown to facilitate the experimental design to understand complex biological events. These methods, primarily based on information from high-throughput experiments, have also led to the identification of new connections thus providing hypothetical models for cellular events. Such models, in turn, provide a framework for directing experimental efforts for validating the predicted molecular rationale for complex cellular processes. In this context, it is envisaged that the rational design of peptides for protein-peptide binding studies could substantially facilitate the experimental strategies to evaluate a predicted interaction. This rational design procedure involves the integration of protein-protein interaction data, gene ontology, physico-chemical calculations, domain-domain interaction data and information on functional sites or critical residues. Results: Here we describe an integrated approach called ``PeptideMine'' for the identification of peptides based on specific functional patterns present in the sequence of an interacting protein. This approach based on sequence searches in the interacting sequence space has been developed into a webserver, which can be used for the identification and analysis of peptides, peptide homologues or functional patterns from the interacting sequence space of a protein. To further facilitate experimental validation, the PeptideMine webserver also provides a list of physico-chemical parameters corresponding to the peptide to determine the feasibility of using the peptide for in vitro biochemical or biophysical studies. Conclusions: The strategy described here involves the integration of data and tools to identify potential interacting partners for a protein and design criteria for peptides based on desired biochemical properties. Alongside the search for interacting protein sequences using three different search programs, the server also provides the biochemical characteristics of candidate peptides to prune peptide sequences based on features that are most suited for a given experiment. The Cam-clay models, or any other plasticity-based models, do not make distinction between the mode of stress transfer in coarse- and fine-grained soils. An examination of behavior at micro level in fine-grained soils, from the consideration of load transfer through physico-chemical interactions, suggests that the plastic compressions result from the grouping of particles into larger clusters and that elastic compressions result from the decrease in the spacing between particles. During shearing, these clusters gradually get dismembered, releasing the locked-in energy. The effect of such dismembering of clusters can be easily incorporated into the original Cam-clay model, and better predictions can be obtained with the associated flow rule, itself, for both normally and over consolidated states. The method essentially defines the hardening of yield surfaces with internal changes in the spacing between particles, instead of changes in externally observed plastic strains. The approach describes the behavior of over consolidated soils as yielding along successfively hardening Roscoe surfaces with gradually varying plastic properties.
