Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) has the potential to be a new technological platform for gas/organic vapour separation because of the unique non-volatile nature and discriminating gas dissolution properties of room temperature ionic liquids (ILs). This work starts with an examination of gas dissolution and transport properties in bulk imidazulium cation based ionic liquids [Cnmim][NTf2] (n = 2.4, 6, 8.10) from simple gas H2, N2, to polar CO2, and C2H6, leading to a further analysis of how gas dissolution and diffusion are influenced by molecular specific gas-SILMs interactions, reflected by differences in gas dissolution enthalpy and entropy. These effects were elucidated again during gas permeation studies by examining how changes in these properties and molecular specific interactions work together to cause deviations from conventional solution–diffusion theory and their impact on some remarkably contrasting gas perm-selectivity performance. The experimental perm-selectivity for all tested gases showed varied and contrasting deviation from the solution–diffusion, depending on specific gas-IL combinations. It transpires permeation for simpler non-polar gases (H2, N2) is diffusion controlled, but strong molecular specific gas-ILs interactions led to a different permeation and selectivity performance for C2H6 and CO2. With exothermic dissolution enthalpy and large order disruptive entropy, C2H6 displayed the fastest permeation rate at increased gas phase pressure in spite of its smallest diffusivity among the tested gases. The C2H6 gas molecules “peg” on the side alkyl chain on the imidazulium cation at low concentration, and are well dispersed in the ionic liquids phase at high concentration. On the other hand strong CO2-ILs affinity resulted in a more prolonged “residence time” for the gas molecule, typified by reversed CO2/N2 selectivity and slowest CO2 transport despite CO2 possess the highest solubility and comparable diffusivity in the ionic liquids. The unique transport and dissolution behaviour of CO2 are further exploited by examining the residing state of CO2 molecules in the ionic liquid phase, which leads to a hypothesis of a condensing and holding capacity of ILs towards CO2, which provide an explanation to slower CO2 transport through the SILMs. The pressure related exponential increase in permeations rate is also analysed which suggests a typical concentration dependent diffusion rate at high gas concentration under increased gas feed pressure. Finally the strong influence of discriminating and molecular specific gas-ILs interactions on gas perm-selectivity performance points to future specific design of ionic liquids for targeted gas separations.

In this paper we investigate gas-phase chemistry in the remnant 'superwind' of a carbon-rich red giant star, during its transition to a planetary nebula. The interacting stellar winds model is used. It is found that during the first few hundred years of transition, significant abundances of a few small molecules and ions (e.g. CH+, CH2+, CH3+, CH, CH2, NH) may occur in the thin, dense, shocked shell of gas predicted by thiS model, but that most molecules observed in protoplanetary nebulae will be rapidly destroyed, through photodissociation by strong UV from the central star. If dense clumps are present during transition, they may allow the gas-phase formation and/or survival of small amounts of some molecules, such as HCN, CN, C2H2, and HC3N, until about 2000 yr after termination of the superwind; and young, fully developed planetary nebulae may show observable amounts of polyatomic molecules by this means. Such clumping may explain the existence of, e.g., HCN in NGC 7027.

The dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) predicts the generation of photons from the vacuum due to the parametric amplification of the quantum fluctuations of an electromagnetic field. The verification of such an effect is still elusive in optical systems due to the very demanding requirements of its experimental implementation. We show that an ensemble of two-level atoms collectively coupled to the electromagnetic field of a cavity, driven at low frequencies and close to a quantum phase transition, stimulates the production of photons from the vacuum. This paves the way to an effective simulation of the DCE through a mechanism that has recently found experimental demonstration. The spectral properties of the emitted radiation reflect the critical nature of the system and allow us to link the detection of the DCE to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for the production of defects when crossing a continuous phase transition.

Demonstration of a tunable conductivity of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces drew significant attention to the development of oxide electronic structures where electronic confinement can be reduced to the nanometer range. While the mechanisms for the conductivity modulation are quite different and include metal insulator phase transition and surface charge writing, generally it is implied that this effect is a result of electrical modification of the LaAlO3 surface (either due to electrochemical dissociation of surface adsorbates or free charge deposition) leading to the change in the two-dimensional electron. gas (2DEG) density at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface. In this paper, using piezoresponse force microscopy we demonstrate a switchable electromechanical response of the LAO overlayer, which we attribute to the motion of oxygen vacancies through the LAO layer thickness. These electrically induced reversible changes in bulk stoichiometry of the LAO layer are a signature of a possible additional mechanism for nanoscale oxide 2DEG control on LAO/STO interfaces.

On-stream deactivation during a water gas shift (WGS) reaction over gold supported on a ceria-zirconia catalyst was examined. Although the fresh catalyst has very high low temperature (<200 degrees C) for WGS activity, a significant loss of CO conversion is found under steady-state operations over hours. This has been shown to be directly related to the concentration of water in the gas phase. The same catalyst also undergoes thermal deactivation above 250 degrees C, and using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, a common deactivation mechanism is proposed. In both cases, the gold nanoparticles, which are found under reaction conditions, are thought to detach from the oxide support either through hydrolysis, <200 degrees C, or thermally, > 200 degrees C. This process reduces the metal-support interaction, which is considered to be critical in determining the high activity of the catalyst.

A string of repulsively interacting particles exhibits a phase transition to a zigzag structure, by reducing the transverse trap potential or the interparticle distance. Based on the emergent symmetry Z2 it has been argued that this instability is a quantum phase transition, which can be mapped to an Ising model in transverse field. An extensive Density Matrix Renormalization Group analysis is performed, resulting in an high-precision evaluation of the critical exponents and of the central charge of the system, confirming that the quantum linear-zigzag transition belongs to the critical Ising model universality class. Quantum corrections to the classical phase diagram are computed, and the range of experimental parameters where quantum effects play a role is provided. These results show that structural instabilities of one-dimensional interacting atomic arrays can simulate quantum critical phenomena typical of ferromagnetic systems.

Mechanochemical preparation of Ag/Al2O3 catalysts used for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx using hydrocarbons has been shown to substantially increase the activity of the catalyst in comparison with Ag/Al2O3 prepared by wet impregnation. The effect of using different ball-milling experimental parameters on both the structure of the material as well as the catalyst activity has been investigated and the optimum conditions established. A phase transition from γ- to α-alumina was observed milling at high speeds which was found to result in lower catalyst activities. At lower milling speeds both fracturing and agglomeration of the alumina support can be observed depending on the grinding time. However, due to ball-milling, a general enhancement in the NOx reduction activity was observed for all catalysts compared with the conventionally prepared catalysts irrespective of the reductant used. Transient DRIFTS-MS experiments were performed to investigate the effect of H2 in the absence and presence of water on the SCR reaction over catalysts prepared by both ball milling and wet impregnation. In-situ DRIFTS-MS analysis revealed significant differences in both gas phase and surface species. Most notably, isocyanate species were formed significantly more quickly and at higher surface concentration in the case of the mechanochemically prepared catalyst.

Ab initio total energy calculations within the density functional theory framework have been used to study the adsorption of CH2 and H as well as the coadsorption of CH2 and H on Ni(111). H binds strongly at threefold hollow sites with calculated adsorption energies of 2.60 and 2.54 eV at the face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) hollow sites, respectively. Adsorption energies and H-Ni distances are found to agree well with both experimental and theoretical results. CH2 adsorbs strongly at all high symmetry sites with calculated adsorption energies of 3.26, 3.22, 3.14 and 2.36 eV at the fcc, hcp, bridge and top sites, respectively. Optimized structures are reported at all sites, and, in the most stable hollow sites there is considerable internal reorganization of the CH2 fragment. The CH2 molecule is tilted, the hydrogens are inequivalent and the C-H bonds are lengthened relative to the gas phase. In the CH2-H coadsorption systems the adsorbates have a tendency to move toward bridge sites. The bonding of all adsorbates to the surface is analyzed in detail. In the present work multilayered micro/nanocrystalline (MCD/NCD) diamond coatings were developed by Hot Filament Chemical Vapour Deposition (HFCVD). The aim was to minimize the surface roughness with a top NCD layer, to maximize adhesion onto the Si3N4 ceramic substrates with a starting MCD coating and to improve the mechanical resistance by the presence of MCD/NCD interfaces in these composite coatings. This set of features assures high wear resistance and low friction coefficients which, combined to diamond biocompatibility, set this material as ideal for biotribological applications. The deposition parameters of MCD were optimized using the Taguchi method, and two varieties of NCD were used: NCD-1, grown in a methane rich gas phase, and NCD-2 where a third gas, Argon, was added to the gas mixture. The best combination of surface pre-treatments in the Si3N4 substrates is obtained by polishing the substrates with a 15 μm diamond slurry, further dry etching with CF4 plasma for 10 minutes and final ultrasonic seeding in a diamond powder suspension in ethanol for 1 hour. The interfaces of the multilayered CVD diamond films were characterized with high detail using HRTEM, STEM-EDX and EELS. The results show that at the transition from MCD to NCD a thin precursor graphitic film is formed. On the contrary, the transition of the NCD to MCD grade is free of carbon structures other than diamond, as a result of the richer atomic hydrogen content and of the higher substrate temperature for MCD deposition. At those transitions, WC nanoparticles were found due to contamination from the filament, being also present at the first interface of the MCD layer with the silicon nitride substrate. In order to study the adhesion and mechanical resistance of the diamond coatings, indentation and particle jet blasting tests were conducted, as well as tribological experiments with homologous pairs. Indentation tests proved the superior behaviour of the multilayered coatings that attained a load of 800 N without delamination, when compared to the mono and bilayered ones. The multilayered diamond coatings also reveal the best solid particle erosion resistance, due to the MCD/NCD interfaces that act as crack deflectors. These results were confirmed by an analytical model on the stress field distribution based on the von Mises criterion. Regarding the tribological testing under dry sliding, multilayered coatings also exhibit the highest critical load values (200N for Multilayers with NCD-2). Low friction coefficient values in the range μ=0.02- 0.09 and wear coefficient values in the order of ~10-7 mm3 N-1 m-1 were obtained for the ball and flat specimens indicating a mild wear regime. Under lubrication with physiological fluids (HBSS e FBS), lower wear coefficient values ~10-9-10-8 mm3 N-1 m-1) were achieved, governed by the initial surface roughness and the effective contact pressure.

We study the phonon dispersion, cohesive and thermal properties of raxe gas solids Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe, using a variety of potentials obtained from different approaches; such as, fitting to crystal properties, purely ab initio calculations for molecules and dimers or ab initio calculations for solid crystalline phase, a combination of ab initio calculations and fitting to either gas phase data or sohd state properties. We explore whether potentials derived with a certain approaxih have any obvious benefit over the others in reproducing the solid state properties. In particular, we study phonon dispersion, isothermal ajid adiabatic bulk moduli, thermal expansion, and elastic (shear) constants as a function of temperatiue. Anharmonic effects on thermal expansion, specific heat, and bulk moduli have been studied using A^ perturbation theory in the high temperature limit using the neaxest-neighbor central force (nncf) model as developed by Shukla and MacDonald [4]. In our study, we find that potentials based on fitting to the crystal properties have some advantage, particularly for Kr and Xe, in terms of reproducing the thermodynamic properties over an extended range of temperatiures, but agreement with the phonon frequencies with the measured values is not guaranteed. For the lighter element Ne, the LJ potential which is based on fitting to the gas phase data produces best results for the thermodynamic properties; however, the Eggenberger potential for Ne, where the potential is based on combining ab initio quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations, produces results that have better agreement with the measured dispersion, and elastic (shear) values. For At, the Morse-type potential, which is based on M0ller-Plesset perturbation theory to fourth order (MP4) ab initio calculations, yields the best results for the thermodynamic properties, elastic (shear) constants, and the phonon dispersion curves.

The thesis investigated the elastic properties and phase transitions in selected mixed sulphate crystals – Lithium Hydrazinium Sulphate [LiN2H2SO4], Lithium Ammonium Sulphate [LiNH4SO4] and Lithium Potassium Sulphate [LiKSO4] – using ultrasonic technique. The pulse echo overlap technique has been used for measuring ultrasonic velocity and its dependence on temperature along different directions with waves of longitudinal and transverse polarizations. Two major numerical techniques and the corresponding computer programs developed as part of present work are presented in this thesis. All the 9 elastic constants of LHS are determined accurately from ultrasonic measurements and applying misorientation correction refines the constants. Ultrasonic measurements are performed in LAS to determine the elastic constants and to study the low temperature phase transitions. Temperature variation studies of elastic constant of LAS are performed for 6 different modes of propagation for heating and cooling at low temperatures. All the 5 independent elastic constants of LPS is determined using ultrasonic measurements. It is concluded that LPS crystal does not undergo a phase transition near this temperature. A comparison of the three crystals studied shows that LPS has maximum number of phase transitions and LHS has the least number. It is interesting to note that LPS has the simplest formula unit among the three. There is considerable scope for the future work on these crystals and others belonging to the sulphate family.

A detailed ultrasonic study of the elastic properties of lithium ammonium sulfate ~LiNH4SO4! or LAS has been carried out below room temperature. The elastic constants of LAS at room temperature are reported. The discrepancy present in earlier elastic constant data associated with the different choice of axes for this orthorhombic system are clarified. The results of the temperature variation study down to 220 K confirm the ferroelastic phase transition at 285 K and establish a thermal hysteresis of about 2.5 K between the cooling and heating cycles. Results of the investigation on the suspected weak phase transition at 256 K suggest that this transition occurs at 242 K on cooling and at 256 K on heating, thus having a thermal hysteresis of about 14 K. However, since the observed elastic anomaly for this transition is very small, the nature of this transition still remains unclear

The thermal transport properties, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of Dicalcium Lead Propionate (DLP) crystal have been measured following a modified photopyroelectric thermal wave method. The measurements have been carried out with thermal waves propagating along the three principal symmetry directions, so as to bring out the anisotropy in these parameters. The variations of the above parameters through two prominent phase transition temperatures of this crystal have also been measured to understand the variation of these parameters as it undergoes ferroelectric phase transitions. In addition, complete thermal analysis and FTIR measurements have been done on the crystal to bring out the correlation of these results with the corresponding thermal transport properties. All these results are presented and discussed. The data presented in this paper form a comprehensive set of results on the thermal transport properties of this crystal.

Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montmorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method was subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The materials exhibit good structural as well as thermal stability. Exchanged metals were found to be present inside the porous network, in the environs of the pillars. Mixed pillaring resulted in the intercalation of Al 13 like polymers in which Al is partially substituted by Fe. The acidic structure was followed by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and cumene cracking test reaction. Weak and medium sites overshadow the strong sites in all systems. However, exchange with metals increases the number of strong sites. The prepared materials are efficient catalysts for gas phase MTBE synthesis. The catalytic activity can be well correlated with the total amount of weak and medium acid sites.
