In the East Indian Ocean direct contribution of land volcanism to sedimentation appears as interlayers of tephra and tuffaceous sediments, pumice fragments, and dispersed volcanoclastic materials of silty grain size. Similarity of distribution of tephra, tuffaceous sediments, Ethmodiscus ooze, and turbidites in the Pleistocene section results from deposition of all these materials under controll of a single factor, namely synchronous redistribution owing to seismic activity on the ocean floor and on the Sunda Islands. Burial of layers of oxidized deposits and formation of iron-manganese nodules is at least partly related to global climate cooling and to circulation of ocean waters.

Late Campanian and Maastrichtian benthic foraminifers are recorded from 12 samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183, Cores 183-1138A-52R through 63R (487.3-602.4 meters below seafloor), Kerguelen Plateau, Indian Ocean, and Danian benthics from one sample in the same section. The entire late Maastrichtian foraminifer fauna is noted from a dredge sample 220 km to the north. The structure of the fauna is compared with the Cenomanian-Turonian of the nearby Eltanin core E54-7. Faunas are reviewed in terms of planktonic percentage, composition, epifaunal/infaunal ratios, and dominance/diversity indices. The region was in the cool Austral Faunal Province through the Campanian-Maastrichtian and was probably warmer in the Cenomanian-Turonian. The ODP section is now 1600 meters below sea level and has subsided several hundred meters since deposition. Its fauna is dominated by epifaunal species suggesting little influence of upwelling. The dredge location has subsided little. Its fauna has a high infaunal content consistent with significant influence of upwelling near the plateau edge. The dominant benthic species remain constant through the ODP Cretaceous section, but subdominance changes, and the section is divided into three informal zones based on dominance/subdominance characteristics of the benthic fauna. Brief taxonomic comments are made on several species and some are figured.

Deep sea manganese nodules from the Southern Ocean have been studied using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical mineragraphic and electron probe microanalysis techniques. The nodules were lower in manganese, iron and associated elements than the average grade of manganese nodules from other localities. A number of chemical relationships have been observed. Nickel, copper, cobalt, barium, zinc, molybdenum, strontium, sulphur and phosphorus are associated with the manganese rich phases and titanium with the iron rich phases. X-ray diffraction analysis and electron probe microanalysis results indicate that the manganese phases are similar to the disordered delta-MnO2 and "manganite" phases reported by other workers.

We present new major and trace element and O-Sr-Nd-isotope data for igneous rocks from the western Mediterranean Alborán Sea, collected during the METEOR 51/1 cruise, and for high-grade schists and gneisses from the continental Alborán basement, drilled during the Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP Leg 161, Site 976). The geochemical data allow a detailed examination of crustal and mantle processes involved in the petrogenesis of the lavas and for the first time reveal a zonation of the Miocene Alborán Sea volcanism: (1) a keel-shaped area of LREE-depleted (mainly tholeiitic series) lavas in the central Alborán Sea, generated by high degrees of partial melting of a depleted mantle source and involving hydrous fluids from subducted marine sediments, that is surrounded by (2) a horseshoe-shaped zone with LREE-enriched (mainly calc-alkaline series) lavas subparallel to the arcuate Betic-Gibraltar-Rif mountain belt. We propose that the geochemical zonation of the Miocene Alborán Basin volcanism results from eastward subduction of Tethys oceanic lithosphere coupled with increasing lithospheric thickness between the central Alborán Sea and the continental margins of Iberia and Africa.

Heterozoan carbonates are typical for extratropical sedimentary systems. However, under mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions, heterozoan carbonates also form in tropical settings. Nevertheless, such heterozoan tropical sedimentary systems are rare in the modern world and therefore are only poorly understood to date. Here a carbonate depositional system is presented where nutrient-rich upwelling waters push onto a wide shelf. These waters warm up in the shelf, giving rise to the production and deposition of tropical heterozoan facies. The carbonate facies on this shelf are characterized by a mixture of tropical and cosmopolitan biogenic sedimentary grains. Study of facies and taxonomy are the key for identifying and characterizing tropical heterozoan carbonates and for distinguishing them from their coolwater counterparts, in particular in the past where the oceanography cannot be determined directly.

Phase equilibria simulations were performed on naturally quenched basaltic glasses to determine crystallization conditions prior to eruption of magmas at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) east of Ascension Island (7°11°S).The results indicate that midocean ridge basalt (MORB) magmas beneath different segments of the MAR have crystallized over a wide range of pressures (100-900MPa). However, each segment seems to have a specific crystallization history. Nearly isobaric crystallization conditions (100-300MPa) were obtained for the geochemically enriched MORB magmas of the central segments, whereas normal (N)-MORB magmas of the bounding segments are characterized by polybaric crystallization conditions (200-900MPa). In addition, our results demonstrate close to anhydrous crystallization conditions of N-MORBs, whereas geochemically enriched MORBs were successfully modeled in the presence of 0.4-1wt% H2O in the parental melts. These estimates are in agreement with direct (Fourier transform IR) measurements of H2O abundances in basaltic glasses and melt inclusions for selected samples. Water contents determined in the parental melts are in the range 0.04-0.09 and 0.30-0.55 wt% H2O for depleted and enriched MORBs, respectively. Our results are in general agreement (within ±200MPa) with previous approaches used to evaluate pressure estimates in MORB. However, the determination of pre-eruptive conditions of MORBs, including temperature and water content in addition to pressure, requires the improvement of magma crystallization models to simulate liquid lines of descent in the presence of small amounts of water. Manganese nodules have been found by the author in the shallow waters of the Hyotan-se bank west of Shikime-jima, an island of the Izu archipelago in the Sea of Japan. The slopes around the bank are steep and rocks are exposed; gravels and coarse material cover the broad and flat plain on its top; andesite and basalt, which are very common in the bedrock, are found mingled with liparite gravels together with a number of manganese concretions from the bank.

After death of benthic and planktic foraminifera their tests intensive dissolve in sediments of the upper sublittoral zone (depth 30-60 m) in the highest productivity area of surface water in the northern Peruvian region. Dissolution of fine pelitic ooze is more intensive than of sandy sediments. Rate of dissolution is lower in the lower sublittoral zone (60-200 m) than in the upper part of the zone. Within the upper bathyal zone (300-500 m) dissolution decreases and results to accumulation of carbonate test in this zone. Benthic tests are more abundant than planktic ones. Very poor species composition and a peculiar set of species are characteristic of foraminiferal assemblages found in the sublittoral and upper bathyal zones along the Peruvian coast.
