This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming approach to solving the problem of optimal type, size and allocation of distributed generators (DGs) in radial distribution systems. In the proposed formulation, (a) the steady-state operation of the radial distribution system, considering different load levels, is modeled through linear expressions; (b) different types of DGs are represented by their capability curves; (c) the short-circuit current capacity of the circuits is modeled through linear expressions; and (d) different topologies of the radial distribution system are considered. The objective function minimizes the annualized investment and operation costs. The use of a mixed-integer linear formulation guarantees convergence to optimality using existing optimization software. The results of one test system are presented in order to show the accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed solution technique.© 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, a novel approach for the optimal location and contract pricing of distributed generation (DG) is presented. Such an approach is designed for a market environment in which the distribution company (DisCo) can buy energy either from the wholesale energy market or from the DG units within its network. The location and contract pricing of DG is determined by the interaction between the DisCo and the owner of the distributed generators. The DisCo intends to minimise the payments incurred in meeting the expected demand, whereas the owner of the DG intends to maximise the profits obtained from the energy sold to the DisCo. This two-agent relationship is modelled in a bilevel scheme. The upper-level optimisation is for determining the allocation and contract prices of the DG units, whereas the lower-level optimisation is for modelling the reaction of the DisCo. The bilevel programming problem is turned into an equivalent single-level mixed-integer linear optimisation problem using duality properties, which is then solved using commercially available software. Results show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed model compared with other existing models. As regards to contract pricing, the proposed approach allowed to find better solutions than those reported in previous works. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013.

This article shows a transmission line model developed directly in the phase domain. The proposed model is based on the relationships between the phase currents and voltages at both the sending and receiving ends of a single-phase line. These relationships, established using an ABCD matrix, were extended to multi-phase lines. The proposed model was validated by using it to represent a transmission line during short-and open-circuit tests. The results obtained with the proposed model were compared with results obtained with a classical model based on modal decomposition. These comparisons show that proposed model was correctly developed. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Este trabalho relata uma pesquisa descritiva quanti-qualitativa realizada entre estudantes do ensino fundamental da rede municipal de Belém, com os objetivos de identificar a representação social de Ciência desses alunos, além de compreender os conteúdos e identificar as tendências de núcleo central reveladas nessas representações. A pesquisa teve como sujeitos 124 estudantes de uma escola da rede municipal de Belém, dos quais 65 encontravam-se cursando 3o ciclo e 59 o 4o ciclo do ensino fundamental. Dos 124, 52 são do sexo masculino e 72 são do sexo feminino, distribuídos entre as faixas etárias de 10 a 17 anos. Tais representações são discutidas tendo como referências teórico-metodológicas a teoria das representações sociais de Serge Moscovici, e suas teorias complementares, como a Teoria do Núcleo Central de Jean-Claude Abric. Os dados coletados através de questionários, compostos por uma questão aberta e uma de evocação livre foram analisados utilizando-se a técnica de análise de conteúdo e de Vergès, respectivamente. A análise dos dados nos revelou a vinculação restrita da Ciência à disciplina escolar Ciências e a alguns de seus conteúdos, como corpo humano e meio ambiente, entre outros. Esses resultados nos fazem concluir que tais representações estão fortemente vinculadas à abordagem adotada pelo ensino de Ciências, ainda predominantemente prescritivo e propedêutico. Com essa conclusão evidencia-se a necessidade de incentivo à formação dos professores de Ciências, na expectativa de se viabilizar a implementação de propostas de ensino que pretendam romper, com esse modelo tradicional, como Alfabetização Científica e Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS), dessa forma contribuindo para formação de cidadãos atuantes de maneira crítica e criativa em nossa sociedade.

Evidencia quais as concepções de ambientes de estudantes de diferentes momentos de escolarização. Objetiva caracterizar essas concepções entre 181 alunos distribuídos entre 5ª e 8ª séries (Ensino Fundamental), 3º ano/Convênio (Ensino Médio) e discentes de 4º semestre e concluintes de cursos de Pedagogia (Ensino Superior), além de investigar possíveis distinções de complexidade, conforme o grau de escolarização dos sujeitos. A análise das respostas ao questionário aplicado evidencia que concepções de ambiente configuram-se como representações sociais, pois estão na base tanto da elaboração de comportamentos quanto da comunicação entre as pessoas, revelando valores e experiências culturais socialmente estruturadas. Em decorrência do caráter representacional de ambiente identifica, entre os sujeitos, compreensões que não se diferenciam em complexidade. Assim, percebe-se dois entendimentos predominantes, influenciados pela mídia e práxis escolar: o ambiente onde vivo, estou e vou, local em que nossa interage entre si e com os demais componentes; o ambiente como manancial de vida, propiciador de elementos essencialmente naturais, que asseguram a vida. Duas categorizações emergem dessas concepções: o ambiente universal, com fronteiras que podem extrapolar a Biosfera, pleno de paz e harmonia, composto por todas as inter-relações entre fatores biológicos, físicos e químicos; o ambiente do homem, onde estão nossas cidades, casas, escolas, ruas e praças, substrato da existência humana, tendo cultura e tecnologia mediando as inter-relações ambientais. Constata que os sujeitos se sentem privilegiados por integrarem a espécie capaz de preservar, ou não, o ambiente. Este antropocentrismo se faz presente até em intenções de cuidado e manutenção, pois se quer conservar aquilo que assegura nossa existência. Trata-se de um dado relevante para orientar ações que privilegiem um tipo de Educação em Ciências voltada para a busca do equilíbrio de nossas relações ambientais.

The violence staged by young people has often been subjected to scientific analysis. The way youths speak, in their role as aggressors or as victims, is examined to determine how they experience violence in a number of different spheres. Repeated group interviews are used to analyze how violence is explained and depicted within the family, at school and in the neighbourhood by two groups of young people (14-17 years old) attending the same school on the outskirts of Rio Claro, Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of the groups involved is identified by the school as violent, and the other, as non-violent. Discourse analysis leads to two conclusions. First, the different contexts of violence infuse a mistrust of institutions, the environment and personal relationships into the subjects' experience, forming a fabric that clouds future prospects. Second, the group of youths identified as violent have a more simplistic, pessimistic view of reality: They see the world in black and white, and they lay no stock in the possibility that violence can be avoided. Consequently, they use violence and understand violence as a defensive strategy that gives one identity. On the other hand, the group identified as nonviolent feels it possible to intervene in situations with nonviolent tools like words. For the young subjects, violence is a context that they assume; it cancels their ability to identify rules and institutions, but it does not generate an effective interaction strategy. Violence causes their social microcontext (in which action prevails over meaning or meaning equals action) to assume overblown dimensions. Any intervention strategy must take into account this indissoluble unity between meaning and action.

The objective of the present article is to assess and compare the performance of electricity generation systems integrated with downdraft biomass gasifiers for distributed power generation. A model for estimating the electric power generation of internal combustion engines and gas turbines powered by syngas was developed. First, the model determines the syngas composition and the lower heating value; and second, these data are used to evaluate power generation in Otto, Diesel, and Brayton cycles. Four synthesis gas compositions were tested for gasification with: air; pure oxygen; 60% oxygen with 40% steam; and 60% air with 40% steam. The results show a maximum power ratio of 0.567 kWh/Nm(3) for the gas turbine system, 0.647 kWh/Nm(3) for the compression ignition engine, and 0.775 kWh/Nm(3) for the spark-ignition engine while running on synthesis gas which was produced using pure oxygen as gasification agent. When these three systems run on synthesis gas produced using atmospheric air as gasification agent, the maximum power ratios were 0.274 kWh/Nm(3) for the gas turbine system, 0.302 kWh/Nm(3) for CIE, and 0.282 kWh/Nm(3) for SIE. The relationship between power output and synthesis gas flow variations is presented as is the dependence of efficiency on compression ratios. Since the maximum attainable power ratio of CIE is higher than that of SIE for gasification with air, more research should be performed on utilization of synthesis gas in CIE. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Usually, ancillary services are provided by large conventional generators; however, with the growing interest in distributed generation to satisfy energy and environmental requirements, it seems reasonable to assume that these services could also be provided by distributed generators in an economical and efficient way. In this paper, a proposal for enhancement of the capacity of active power reserve for frequency control using distributed generators is presented. The goal is to minimize the payments done by the transmission system operator to conventional and distributed generators for this ancillary service and for the energy needed to satisfy loads and system losses, subject to a set of constraints. In order to perform analysis, the proposal was implemented using data of the IEEE 30-bus transmission test system. Comparisons were performed considering conventional generators without and with distributed generators installed in the system.

This paper presents an applied qualitative and quantitative study and seeks to understand egocentric speech according to Vygotsky and Piaget and, through a literature review, the educational implications of Vygotsky and Piaget’s ideas. Additionally, the representations of these ideas by fifteen teachers of basic education are investigated. It is important to understand egocentric speech in Vygotsky and Piaget. Despite the differences in how they conceive its nature, functions and implications, for both, egocentric speech is intrinsically linked to and facilitates our understanding of child development. Regarding the representation of teachers who criticized children who used egocentric language, when teachers established any negative consequences of such language, they attributed it to the affective and moral aspects as well as to cognition. However, their approach was more practically oriented than those found in the psychological theories addressed. Therefore, this study aids in understanding the limits and scope of teacher-training courses.

This paper is concerned with the controllability and stabilizability problem for control systems described by a time-varyinglinear abstract differential equation with distributed delay in the state variables. An approximate controllability propertyis established, and for periodic systems, the stabilization problem is studied. Assuming that the semigroup of operatorsassociated with the uncontrolled and non delayed equation is compact, and using the characterization of the asymptoticstability in terms of the spectrum of the monodromy operator of the uncontrolled system, it is shown that the approximatecontrollability property is a sufficient condition for the existence of a periodic feedback control law that stabilizes thesystem. In a smart grid environment, attention should be paid not only to the power supplied to satisfy loads and system losses but also to the services necessary to provide security and stability to the system: the so-called ancillary services. As they are well known the benefits that distributed generation can bring to electrical systems and to the environment, in this work the possibility that active power reserve for frequency control could be provided by distributed generators (DGs) in an efficient and economical way is explored. The proposed methodology was tested using the IEEE 34-bus distribution test system. The results show improvements in the capacity of the system for this ancillary service and decrease in system losses and payments of the distribution system operator to the DGs.
