Nanocrystalline Ce1-xFexO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.45) and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O2-delta of similar to 4 nm sizes were synthesized by a sonochemical method using diethyletriamine (DETA) as a complexing agent. Compounds were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ce1-xFexO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.45) and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O2-delta crystallize in fluorite structure where Fe is in +3, Ce is in +4 and Pd is in +2 oxidation state. Due to substitution of smaller Fe3+ ion in CeO2, lattice oxygen is activated and 33% Fe substituted CeO2 i.e. Ce0.67Fe0.33O1.835 reversibly releases 0.31O] up to 600 degrees C which is higher or comparable to the oxygen storage capacity of CeO2-ZrO2 based solid solutions (Catal. Today 2002, 74, 225-234). Due to interaction of redox potentials of Pd2+/0(0.89 V) and Fe3+/2+ (0.77 V) with Ce4+/3+ (1.61 V), Pd ion accelerates the electron transfer from Fe2+ to Ce4+ in Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815, making it a high oxygen storage material as well as a highly active catalyst for CO oxidation and water gas shift reaction. The activation energy for CO oxidation with Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815 is found to be as low as 38 kJ mol(-1). Ce0.67Fe0.33O1.835 and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815 have also shown high activity for the water gas shift reaction. CO conversion to CO2 is 100% H-2 specific with these catalysts and conversion rate was found to be as high 27.2 mu moles g(-1) s(-1) and the activation energy was found to be 46.4 kJ mol(-1) for Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815.

The self-complementary DNA fragment CCGGCGCCGG crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R3 with unit cell parameters a = 54.07 angstrom and c = 44.59 angstrom. The structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods at 2.2 angstrom resolution and refined to an R value of 16.7%. In the crystal, the decamer forms B-DNA double helices with characteristic groove dimensions: compared with B-DNA of random sequence, the minor groove is wide and deep and the major groove is rather shallow. Local base pair geometries and stacking patterns are within the range commonly observed in B-DNA crystal structures. The duplex bears no resemblance to A-form DNA as might have been expected for a sequence with only GC base pairs. The shallow major groove permits an unusual crystal packing pattern with several direct intermolecular hydrogen bonds between phosphate oxygens and cytosine amino groups. In addition, decameric duplexes form quasi-infinite double helices in the crystal by end-to-end stacking. The groove geometries and accessibilities of this molecule as observed in the crystal may be important for the mode of binding of both proteins and drug molecules to G/C stretches in DNA.

MnO/C composite coatings were grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process on ceramic alumina in argon ambient. Characterization by various techniques confirms that these coatings are homogeneous composites comprising nanometer-sized MnO particles embedded in a matrix of nanometer-sized graphite. Components of the MnO/C composite coating crystalline disordered, but are electrically quite conductive. Resistance vs. temperature measurements show that coating resistance increases exponentially from a few hundred ohms at room temperature to a few megaohms at 30 K. Logarithmic plots of reduced activation energy vs. temperature show that the coating material undergoes a metal-insulator transition. The reduced activation energy exponent for the film under zero magnetic field was 2.1, which is unusually high, implying that conduction is suppressed at much faster rate than the Mott or the Efros-Shklovskii hopping mechanism. Magnetoconductance us. magnetic field plots obtained at various temperatures show a high magnetoconductance (similar to 28.8%) at 100 K, which is unusually large for a disordered system, wherein magnetoresistance is attributed typically to weak localization. A plausible explanation for the unusual behavior observed in the carbonaceous disordered composite material is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cylindrical specimens of textured commercial pure alpha-titanium plate, cut with the cylinder axis along the rolling direction for one set of experiments and in the long transverse direction for the other set, were compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.001 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates greater-than-or-equal-to 1 s-1, both sets of specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands, but the intensity of shear bands was found to be higher in the rolling direction specimens than in the long transverse direction specimens. At strain rates -0.1 s-1, the material deformed in a microstructurally inhomogeneous fashion. For the rolling direction specimens, cracking was observed at 100-degrees-C and at strain rates -0.1 s-1. This is attributed to dynamic strain aging. Such cracking was not observed in the long transverse specimens. The differences in the intensity of adiabatic shear bands and that of dynamic strain aging between the two sets of test specimens are attributed to the strong crystallographic texture present in these plates.

The galactose-specific lectin from the seeds of Butea monosperma has been crystallized by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion technique. The crystals belonged to space group P1, with unit-cell parameters a = 78.45, b = 78.91, c = 101.85 A, alpha = 74.30, beta = 76.65, gamma = 86.88 degrees. X-ray diffraction data were collected to a resolution of 2.44 A under cryoconditions (100 K) using a MAR image-plate detector system mounted on a rotating-anode X-ray generator. Molecular-replacement calculations carried out using the coordinates of several structures of legume lectins as search models indicate that the galactose-specific lectin from B. monosperma forms an octamer.

It is known from temperature-programmed desorption studies that the binding energy of thiophene over Mo/gamma-Al2O3 and Co-Mo/gamma-Al2O3, hydrodesulfurization catalysts, is lower in the presence of hydrogen. The adsorption of thiophene on clean and hydrogen-adsorbed MoS2 was modelled using extended Huckel tight binding band structure calculations. In the eta(1) adsorption configuration the calculations show a lower binding energy for adsorption on the hydrogen-preadsorbed surface similar to that observed experimentally. The lowering is due to an increased occupancy of the Mo density of states in the presence of hydrogen.

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface. We report crack formation in alumina films grown on Si(100), caused by annealing in a controlled oxidizing ambient. The films were grown in a low-pressure CVD reactor, using aluminium acetylacetonate as precursor. High purity argon and nitrous oxide were employed as carrier and oxidizing gas, respectively. The films were characterized by optical microscopy and SEM/EDAX. The proportion and chemical nature of the heteroatoms, namely C and H, incorporated into the films from the precursor, were characterized by XPS, and FTIR. As-deposited films do not exhibit any cracks, while post-deposition annealing results in cracks. Apart from the delamination of the films, annealing in nitrous oxide ambient leads to an unusual crack geometry, which we term the “railway-track”. These twin cracks are very straight and run parallel to each other for as much as several millimeters. Often, two such linear tracks meet at exactly 90°. Between some of these tracks lie bullet-like structures with very sharp tips, oriented in a specific direction. As cracks are generally activated by residual stress, both thermal and intrinsic, the origins of the stresses that generate these linear cracks are discussed. The redistribution of stress, arising from the removal of C and H during annealing, will also be discussed. An attempt has been made to correlate the formation of cracks with the crystal structure of the film.

The paper reports the operational experience from a 100 kWe gasification power plant connected to the grid in Karnataka. Biomass Energy for Rural India (BERI) is a program that implemented gasification based power generation with an installed capacity of 0.88 MWe distributed over three locations to meet the electrical energy needs in the district of Tumkur. The operation of one 100 kWe power plant was found unsatisfactory and not meeting the designed performance. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the technology developer, took the initiative to ensure the system operation, capacity building and prove the designed performance. The power plant connected to the grid consists of the IISc gasification system which includes reactor, cooling, cleaning system, fuel drier and water treatment system to meet the producer gas quality for an engine. The producer gas is used as a fuel in Cummins India Limited, GTA 855 G model, turbo charged engine and the power output is connected to the grid. The system has operated for over 1000 continuous hours, with only about 70 h of grid outages. The total biomass consumption for 1035 h of operation was 111 t at an average of 107 kg/h. Total energy generated was 80.6 MWh reducing over loot of CO(2) emissions. The overall specific fuel consumption was about 1.36 kg/kWh, amounting to an overall efficiency from biomass to electricity of about 18%. The present operations indicate that a maintenance schedule for the plant can be at the end of 1000 h. The results for another 1000 h of operation by the local team are also presented. From electromotive force (emf) measurements using solid oxide galvanic cells incorporating ZrOz-CaO and ThOz-YO~.s electrolytes, the chemical potentials of oxygen over the systems Fe + FeCrzO 4 + Cr20 ~ and Fe + FeV204 + V203 were calculated. The values may be represented by the equations: 2Fe(s, I) + Oz(g) + 2Cr2Oa(s) -- 2FeCr204 (s)Akto2 = - 151,400 + 34.7T (• cal= -633,400 + 145.5T(• J (750 to 1536~ A~tO2 = -158,000 + 38.4T(• cal= -661,000 + 160.5T(*1250) J (1536 to 1700~2Fe (s, I) + O2 (g) + 2V203 (s) -- 2FeV204 (s) A/~Oz = - 138,000 + 29.8T(+300) cal= - 577,500 + 124.7T (• J (750 to 1536~A/IO2 = -144,600 + 33.45T(-300) cal = -605,100 + 140.0T(~-1250) J (1536 to 1700~At the oxygen potentials corresponding to Fe + FeCrzO a + Cr203 equilibria, the electronic contribution to the conductivity of ZrO2-CaO electrolyte was found to affect the measured emf. Application of a small 60 cycle A.C. voltage with an amplitude of 50 mv across the cell terminals reduced the time required to attain equilibrium at temperatures between 750 to 9500C by approximately a factor of two. The second law entropy of iron chromite obtained in this study is in good agreement with that calculated from thermal data. The entropies of formation of these spinel phases from the component oxides can be correlated to cation distribution and crystal field theory.

An extension of the supramolecular synthon-based fragment approach (SBFA) method for transferability of multipole charge density parameters to include weak supramolecular synthons is proposed. In particular, the SBFA method is applied to C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot F, and F center dot center dot center dot F containing synthons. A high resolution charge density study has been performed on 4-fluorobenzoic acid to build a synthon library for C-H center dot center dot center dot F infinite chain interactions. Libraries for C-H center dot center dot center dot O and F center dot center dot center dot F synthons were taken from earlier work. The SBFA methodology was applied successfully to 2- and 3-fluorobenzoic acids, data sets for which were collected in a routine manner at 100 K, and the modularity of the synthons was demonstrated. Cocrystals of isonicotinamide with all three fluorobenzoic acids were also studied with the SBFA method. The topological analysis of inter- and intramolecular interaction regions was performed using Bader's AIM approach. This study shows that the SBFA method is generally applicable to generate charge density maps using information from multiple intermolecular regions.

Phase pure wurtzite GaN films were grown on Si (100) substrates by introducing a silicon nitride layer followed by low temperature GaN growth as buffer layers. GaN films grown directly on Si (100) were found to be phase mixtured, containing both cubic (beta) and hexagonal (alpha) modifications. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy studies reveal that the significant enhancement in the structural as well as in the optical properties of GaN films grown with silicon nitride buffer layer grown at 800 degrees C when compared to the samples grown in the absence of silicon nitride buffer layer and with silicon nitride buffer layer grown at 600 degrees C. Core-level photoelectron spectroscopy of Si(x)N(y) layers reveals the sources for superior qualities of GaN epilayers grown with the high temperature substrate nitridation process. The discussion has been carried out on the typical inverted rectification behavior exhibited by n-GaN/p-Si heterojunctions. Considerable modulation in the transport mechanism was observed with the nitridation conditions. The heterojunction fabricated with the sample of substrate nitridation at high temperature exhibited superior rectifying nature with reduced trap concentrations. Lowest ideality factors (similar to 1.5) were observed in the heterojunctions grown with high temperature substrate nitridation which is attributed to the recombination tunneling at the space charge region transport mechanism at lower voltages and at higher voltages space charge limited current conduction is the dominating transport mechanism. Whereas, thermally generated carrier tunneling and recombination tunneling are the dominating transport mechanisms in the heterojunctions grown without substrate nitridation and low temperature substrate nitridation, respectively. Amorphous silicon carbide (a-Si(1-x)C(x)) films were deposited on silicon (100) and quartz substrates by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering of silicon in methane (CH(4))-Argon (Ar) atmosphere. The influence of substrate temperature and target power on the composition, carbon bonding configuration, band gap, refractive index and hardness of a-SiC films has been investigated. Increase in substrate temperature results in slightly decreasing the carbon concentration in the films but favors silicon-carbon (Si-C) bonding. Also lower target powers were favorable towards Si-C bonding. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results agree with the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy results. Increase in substrate temperature resulted in increased hardness of the thin films from 13 to 17 GPa and the corresponding bandgap varied from 2.1 to 1.8 eV. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
