High-efficiency white electrolurninescence from a single polymer is achieved by enhancing the electroluminescence efficiency and effecting a red-shift in the emission spectrum of the blue emissive species. A single-layer device of the resultant polymer exhibits a higher luminous efficiency than the nonmodified species (12.8 cd A(-1), see figure) and an external quantum efficiency of 5.4 % with CIE coordinates of (0.31,0.36), exemplifying the success of the reported methodology.

A novel dissolving process for chitin and chitosan has been developed by using the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) as a solvent, and a novel application of chitin and chitosan as substitutes for amino-functionalized synthetic polymers for capturing and releasing CO2 has also been exploited based on this processing strategy.

Maleic anhydride end capped poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC-MA) was blended with ethyl cellulose (EC) by casting from dichloromethane solutions. The thermotropic liquid crystallinity, thermal decomposition behavior, and aggregated structure were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TGA), and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). DSC exhibits thermotropic liquid crystallinity in the rich EC composition range. TGA shows that thermal decomposition temperatures were elevated upon interfusing EC into PPC-MA. WAXD corroborates that EC and PPC-MA/EC blend films cast from dilute dichloromethane solution possessed cholesteric liquid crystalline structure in the rich EC composition range, and that dilution of PPC-MA with EC increased the dimension of noncrystalline region, leading to a more ordered packed structure.

In this paper, we study the effects of electrical annealing at different voltages on the performance of organic light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diodes studied here are single-layer devices based on a conjugated dendrimer doped with 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole as the emissive layer. We find that these devices can be annealed electrically by applying a voltage. This process reduces the turn-on voltage and enhances the brightness and efficiency. We obtained an external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 0.07% photon/electron and a brightness of 2900 cd m(-2) after 12.4 V electrical annealing, which are about 6 times and 9 times higher than un-annealing devices, respectively. The improved luminance and efficiency are attributed to the presence of a space charge field near the electrodes caused by charging of traps.

A soluble polymer emitting green color with high efficiency was synthesized. Bright green electroluminescence devices, both single layer and multilayer, were fabricated. The luminous efficiency was improved dramatically. Carrier injection from the electrodes to the emissive layer and concomitant green electroluminescence from the emissive layer were observed. A luminance of 920 cd/m(2) and luminous efficiency of 5.35 1m/W were achieved at a drive voltage of 15 V for the multilayer device. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Gas phase reactions of C-60 and C-70 with the ion system of acetone under chemical ionization conditions have been studied. C-60 and C-70 can react with acetyl and oxonium ions, which come from self-chemical ionization of acetone, to form adduct ions. In addition, C-60 and C-70 can accept protons to produce protonated ions. C-70 is more active in the above reactions than C-60 because of its stronger gas-phase basicity. A sigma-bond between C-60 and an acyl carbon atom can be formed to produce stable acetylated C-60 ions. The above results may be relevant to the acetylation reactions of C-60 in the condensed phase.

Solar Energy is a clean and abundant energy source that can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels around which questions still persist about their contribution to climate and long-term availability. Monolithic triple-junction solar cells are currently the state of the art photovoltaic devices with champion cell efficiencies exceeding 40%, but their ultimate efficiency is restricted by the current-matching constraint of series-connected cells. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the use of solar cells with lattice constants equal to InP in order to reduce the constraint of current matching in multi-junction solar cells. This was addressed by two approaches: Firstly, the formation of mechanically stacked solar cells (MSSC) was investigated through the addition of separate connections to individual cells that make up a multi-junction device. An electrical and optical modelling approach identified separately connected InGaAs bottom cells stacked under dual-junction GaAs based top cells as a route to high efficiency. An InGaAs solar cell was fabricated on an InP substrate with a measured 1-Sun conversion efficiency of 9.3%. A comparative study of adhesives found benzocyclobutene to be the most suitable for bonding component cells in a mechanically stacked configuration owing to its higher thermal conductivity and refractive index when compared to other candidate adhesives. A flip-chip process was developed to bond single-junction GaAs and InGaAs cells with a measured 4-terminal MSSC efficiency of 25.2% under 1-Sun conditions. Additionally, a novel InAlAs solar cell was identified, which can be used to provide an alternative to the well established GaAs solar cell. As wide bandgap InAlAs solar cells have not been extensively investigated for use in photovoltaics, single-junction cells were fabricated and their properties relevant to PV operation analysed. Minority carrier diffusion lengths in the micrometre range were extracted, confirming InAlAs as a suitable material for use in III-V solar cells, and a 1-Sun conversion efficiency of 6.6% measured for cells with 800 nm thick absorber layers. Given the cost and small diameter of commercially available InP wafers, InGaAs and InAlAs solar cells were fabricated on alternative substrates, namely GaAs. As a first demonstration the lattice constant of a GaAs substrate was graded to InP using an InxGa1-xAs metamorphic buffer layer onto which cells were grown. This was the first demonstration of an InAlAs solar cell on an alternative substrate and an initial step towards fabricating these cells on Si. The results presented offer a route to developing multi-junction solar cell devices based on the InP lattice parameter, thus extending the range of available bandgaps for high efficiency cells.

This paper examines the relative efficiency of UK credit unions. Radial and non-radial measures of input cost efficiency plus associated scale efficiency measures are computed for a selection of input output specifications. Both measures highlighted that UK credit unions have considerable scope for efficiency gains. It was mooted that the documented high levels of inefficiency may be indicative of the fact that credit unions, based on clearly defined and non-overlapping common bonds, are not in competition with each other for market share. Credit unions were also highlighted as suffering from a considerable degree of scale inefficiency with the majority of scale inefficient credit unions subject to decreasing returns to scale. The latter aspect highlights that the UK Government's goal of larger credit unions must be accompanied by greater regulatory freedom if inefficiency is to be avoided. One of the advantages of computing non-radial measures is that an insight into potential over- or under-expenditure on specific inputs can be obtained through a comparison of the non-radial measure of efficiency with the associated radial measure. Two interesting findings emerged, the first that UK credit unions over-spend on dividend payments and the second that they under-spend on labour costs.

A method using a combination of ball milling, acid hydrolysis, and ultrasound was developed to obtain a high yield of cellulose nanofibers from flax fibers and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites were prepared with these additives by a solution-casting technique. The cellulose nanofibers and nanocomposite films that were produced were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X- ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Nanofibers derived from MCC were on average approximately 8 nm in diameter and 111 nm in length. The diameter of the cellulose nanofibers produced from flax fibers was approximately 9 nm, and the length was 141 nm. A significant enhancement of the thermal and mechanical properties was achieved with a small addition of cellulose nanofibers to the polymer matrix. Interestingly, the flax nanofibers had the same reinforcing effects as MCC nanofibers in the matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated that the use of cellulose nanofibers (acid hydrolysis) induced a mechanical percolation phenomenon leading to outstanding and unusual mechanical properties through the formation of a rigid filler network in the PVA matrix. X-ray diffraction showed that there was no significant change in the crystallinity of the PVA matrix with the incorporation of cellulose nanofibers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Lanthanide(III) complexes of p-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(p-NBSA)(3), m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(m-NBSA)(3), and 2,4-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(2,4-NBSA)(3), were prepared, characterized and examined as catalyst for the nitration of benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, bromobenzene and chlorobenzene. The initial screening of the catalysts showed that lanthanum(III) complexes were more effective than the corresponding ytterbium(III) complexes, and that catalysts containing the bulky 2,4-NBSA ligand were less effective than the catalyst containing p-NBSA (nosylate) or m-NBSA ligands. Examination of a series of Ln(p-NBSA)(3) and Ln(m-NBSA)(3) catalysts revealed that there is a clear correlation between the ionic radii of the lanthanide(III) ions and the yields of nitration, with the lighter lanthanides being more effective. The X-ray single crystal structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3).6H(2)O shows that two m-NBSA ligands are directly bound to the metal centre while the third ligand is not located in the first coordination sphere, but it is hydrogen bonded to one of the water molecules which is coordinated to ytterbium(III). NMR studies suggest that this structure is preserved under the conditions used in the nitration reaction. The structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3) is markedly different from the structure of the well-known ytterbium(III) triflate catalyst. The coordination of the nitrobenzenesulfonate counterion to the lanthanide(III) ion suggests that steric effects might play an important role in determining the efficiency of these novel nitration catalysts. Invasive species may threaten the fundamental role played by native macroinvertebrate shredders in determining energy flow and the trophic dynamics of freshwater ecosystems. Functionally, amphipods have long been regarded as mainly shredders, but they are increasingly recognized as major predators of other macroinvertebrate taxa. Furthermore, intraguild predation (IGP) between native and invasive amphipods underlies many species displacements. We used laboratory mesocosms to investigate what might happen to shredders and leaf-litter processing in water bodies invaded by the highly predatory Ponto-Caspian amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus, which is spreading rapidly throughout Europe and may soon invade the North American Great Lakes. The leaf-shredding efficiency of D. villosus was significantly lower than that of 3 Gammarus species (2 native and 1 invasive) that D. villosus has either already displaced or may be currently displacing in The Netherlands. In addition, D. villosus was a major predator of all of these native and invasive amphipod shredders and of a common isopod shredder Asellus aquaticus. Leaf processing in Gammarus and Asellus mesocosms declined rapidly in the presence of D. villosus and ceased altogether within 4 d because by then, all potential shredders had been killed and consumed. Furthermore, the shredding efficiency of surviving amphipods and isopods declined significantly within 2 d of the release of D. villosus, a result indicating that predator-avoidance behavior may override leaf processing. We discuss the implications of these direct and indirect effects of D. villosus invasions and species displacements on community structure and litter processing in aquatic ecosystems. © 2011 The North American Benthological Society.

In order to introduce specificity for Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis prior to a phage amplification assay, various magnetic-separation approaches, involving either antibodies or peptides, were evaluated in terms of the efficiency of capture (expressed as a percentage) of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis cells and the percentage of nonspecific binding by other Mycobacterium spp. A 50:50 mixture of MyOne Tosylactivated Dynabeads coated with the chemically synthesized M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis-specific peptides biotinylated aMp3 and biotinylated aMptD (i.e., peptide-mediated magnetic separation [PMS]) proved to be the best magnetic-separation approach for achieving 85 to 100% capture of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis and minimal (<1%) nonspecific recovery of other Mycobacterium spp. (particularly if beads were blocked with 1% skim milk before use) from broth samples containing 103 to 104 CFU/ml. When PMS was coupled with a recently optimized phage amplification assay and used to detect M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis in 50-ml volumes of spiked milk, the mean 50% limit of detection (LOD50) was 14.4 PFU/50 ml of milk (equivalent to 0.3 PFU/ml). This PMS-phage assay represents a novel, rapid method for the detection and enumeration of viable M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis organisms in milk, and potentially other sample matrices, with results available within 48 h.

Two different procedures were compared for the preparation of cellulose nanofibres from flax and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The first involved a combination of high energy ball milling, acid hydrolysis and ultrasound, whilst the second employed a high pressure homogenisation technique, with and without various pre-treatments of the fibrous feedstock. The geometry and microstructure of the cellulose nanofibres were observed by SEM and TEM and their particle size measured using image analysis and dynamic light scattering. Aspect ratios of nanofibres made by microfluidisation were orders of magnitude greater than those achieved by acid hydrolysis. FTIR, XRD and TGA were used to characterise changes to chemical functionality, cellulose crystallinity and thermal stability resulting from the approaches used for preparing the cellulose nanofibres. Hydrolysis using sulphuric acid gave rise to esterification of the cellulose nanofibres, a decrease in crystallinity with MCC, but an increase with flax, together with an overall reduction in thermal stability. Increased shear history of flax subjected to multiple passes through the microfluidiser, raised both cellulose nanofibril crystallinity and thermal stability, the latter being strongly influenced by acid, alkaline and, most markedly, silane pretreatment.

Power back-off performances of the modified power-combining Class-E amplifier under different amplitudemodulation schemes such as envelope elimination and restoration (EER) and envelope tracking (ET) are experimentally assessed in this paper. The modified output load network adopting three-harmonic terminations technique eliminates the need for additional lossy filtering section in the transmitter chain. Small dc-feed inductances rather than massive RF chokes as in the classic Class-E amplifier are used so as to increase the modulation bandwidth and therefore improve the linearity of the EER transmitter. High efficiency over a wide dynamic range using amplitude modulation through drain-voltage control (EER) was achieved and this agrees well with the Class-E theoretical prediction. When the PA was used within the ET scheme, an increase of average drain efficiency of as high as 40% with respect to the CW excitation was obtained for a multi-carrier input signal with 12dB peak-to-average power ratio. © 2011 Institut fur Mikrowellen.
