Sex, sin and salvation : a case study of the narrative pictorial cycle of Saint Mary the Egyptian at Bourges Cathedral

This paper studies the narrative stained glass cycle of the Life of Saint Mary the Egyptian at Bourges Cathedral within the context of prevailing—and often conflicting--civil and ecclesiastical attitudes toward sex, sexual sin, and prostitution in early thirteenth century France. Although the Church maintained that sexual sin was mortal sin, civil records suggest the public was skeptical. Through the example of a penitent harlot, this window, both structurally and in thematic content, attempts to map a doctrinally appropriate path from sexual sin to purity of spirit—and salvation—through complete submission to the Church and its clergy.

Categorías diagnósticas y género: los ejemplos de la clorosis y la neurastenia en la medicina española contemporánea (1877-1936)

La Clorosis y la Neurastenia representan dos ejemplos históricos de disociaciones patológicas y de las dificultades que conlleva abordar su diagnóstico con los criterios de la mentalidad científiconatural. En el contexto de aquellas dificultades, el trabajo profundiza en la visión androcéntrica y el discurso ideológico con el que observaba la medicina española contemporánea a la naturaleza femenina y a las patologías de mujeres. Así mismo, a partir de las similitudes mostradas con los actuales síndromes del dolor y la fatiga, la investigación plantea la necesidad de revisar el abordaje clínico de éstas dolencias al intentar superar las limitaciones que ofrece el modelo biomédico.

El plano geométrico de Crevillent: un pla urbanístic de sanejament i reforma interior de José Guardiola Picó el 1877

El present article analitza i situa en el context l’expedient urbanístic sobre la reforma interior del nucli urbà de Crevillent que l’ajuntament d’aquesta ciutat intentà dur a terme en l’últim quart del segle xix i que, en part, constitueix el plànol geomètric parcial d’aquesta vila. Es tracta d’un expedient municipal en què se succeeixen les actes del consistori per a la seua tramitació administrativa (entre 1876 i 1878) i en què s’intercala el projecte urbà de reforma interior, que consta de tres documents (memòria i dos planols: geomètric i de perfils), firmats el 12 de gener de 1877 per l’arquitecte José Guardiola y Picó (1836-1909), i que es tanca amb un plànol solt del 9 de gener de 1884 de firma no molt llegible.

Los ensayos de Joaquín de Villalba (1752-1807) sobre la vacuna de la viruela en la Escuela de Veterinaria de Madrid

La rápida propagación del método empírico para combatir la viruela dado a conocer por Edward Jenner conllevó algunas dificultades. A la necesidad de obtener la máxima aceptación posible entre la población, se añadió la de ejecutar con rigor la técnica así como la de producir, transportar y conservar el fluido vacunal con garantías de calidad. Abastecerse de vacuna era una preocupación solventada en parte gracias a los envíos realizados desde instituciones radicadas en Londres o París. Tras su recepción se iniciaban cadenas de vacunaciones mediante la técnica del brazo a brazo. El temor a la extinción del fluido vacunal, no obstante, despertó el interés por la producción autóctona. Era necesario encontrar vacas afectadas por viruela vacuna o en su defecto aprender a conservar la materia vacunal en las propias vacas u otros animales. Varias iniciativas exploraron esta posibilidad. El fondo documental de la Biblioteca Nacional de España conserva un texto que refleja 2 de estos ensayos realizados en la Real Escuela Veterinaria de Madrid a cargo del médico Joaquín de Villalba y el albéitar Antonio Roura en 1802 y 1803. La tentativa no obtuvo el éxito deseado.

Catharine Waugh McCullouch papers in the Mary Earhart Dillon collection, 1869-1945

Collection primarily documents McCulloch's research on women's legal status, and her work with the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and the League of Women Voters. There is also documentation of women in the legal profession, of McCulloch's friendships with the other women suffragists and lawyers, and some biographical material. The papers contain little information about her family or social life.
