Polymers with mid-chain alkoxyamine functionality were synthesized by activating monohalogenated polymers in the presence of nitroso or nitrone radical traps. The resulting polymers were either polystyrene (PSt) homopolymers with a mid-chain alkoxyamine or PSt-poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) diblock copolymers with an alkoxyamine unit at the junction between the segments. Monohalogenated polymers where synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and were then reacted to form polymer radicals in the presence of a radical trap, nitrone or nitroso. When only polystyrene radicals were reacted with the radical trap a dimer was formed with an alkoxyamine functionality in the center of the polymer chain. This functionality allowed the polymer chain to be cleaved in order to visualize the extent of the alkoxyamine functionality incorporation into the polymer chains. It was found that near quantitative alkoxyamine mid-chain functionality could be achieved by activating the PStBr in the presence of 10 equivalents of nitrone, 5 equivalents of copper bromide, and 2 equivalents of copper metal. Further reducing the amount of copper metal led to incomplete coupling, while increasing the equivalents beyond 2 generated polymer dimers with less than quantitative mid-chain functionality. Monochlorinated polystyrene (PStCl) precursors gave much poorer coupling results compared to reactions with PStBr, which is consistent with the stronger C-Cl bond resisting activation and the formation of the polystyryl radicals. When poly (methyl acrylate) (PMABr) is reacted with PStBr in the presence of a nitroso group at reduced temperatures (30 oC) block copolymers were selectively formed with an alkoxyamine functionality in the center. This was done by first activating the PSt-Br to form a polymer radical that would react with the radical trap to form a persistent radical on the oxygen. The PMA-Br, once activated, reacted with the radical on the oxygen to form the block copolymer. To test the amount of functionality incorporated, a coupling reaction was performed with no nitroso present, and found that no reaction occurred. This showed that the radical trap is essential for the coupling to occur, and cleavage of the diblock indicated that the alkoxyamine functionality was indeed incorporated into the diblock.

Testing a new method of nanoindentation using the atomic force microscope (AFM) was the purpose of this research. Nanoindentation is a useful technique to study the properties of materials on the sub-micron scale. The AFM has been used as a nanoindenter previously; however several parameters needed to obtain accurate results, including tip radius and cantilever sensitivity, can be difficult to determine. To solve this problem, a new method to determine the elastic modulus of a material using the atomic force microscope (AFM) has been proposed by Tang et al. This method models the cantilever and the sample as two springs in a series. The ratio of the cantilever spring constant (k) to diameter of the tip (2a) is treated in the model as one parameter (α=k/2a). The value of a, along with the cantilever sensitivity, are determined on two reference samples with known mechanical properties and then used to find the elastic modulus of an unknown sample. To determine the reliability and accuracy of this technique, it was tested on several polymers. Traditional depth-sensing nanoindentation was preformed for comparison. The elastic modulus values from the AFM were shown to be statistically similar to the nanoindenter results for three of the five samples tested.

We are interested in the syntheses of new complexes and in their characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Once we understand the structures, studies aimed at understanding uses of these complexes in the field of catalytic epoxidation using complexes soluble in water and syntheses of thin films (not assessed) were conducted. The syntheses, characterization and catalytic properties of a series of mononuclear, dinuclear and tetranuclear molybdenum and tungsten oxo complexes are described. The syntheses and structural characterization of two copper coordination polymers with 3,5-dihydroxylbenzoate ligand, and five paddlewheel shaped copper dendrimers coordinated with Fréchet-type dendrons are also detailed. The background of this dissertation is outlined in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 describes the syntheses, and characterization of two new mononuclear molybdenum(VI) and tungsten(VI) oxo complexes, MoO2Cl2(OPPh2CH2OH)2, and WO2Cl2(OPPh2CH2OH)2, bearing hydrophilic phosphine oxide ligand. The catalytic properties of these complexes for the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene were also studied. Two new dinuclear molybdenum(VI) and tungsten(VI) oxo complexes Mo2O4Cl2[(HOCH2)PhPOO]2, and (CH3O)2(O)W(μ-O)(μ-O2PPh2)2W(O)(CH3O)2, bearing organophosphinate ligand are described in Chapter 3 and 4. Chapter 4 and 5 describes the syntheses and characterization of tetranuclear molybdenum(V) oxo complexes bearing various organophosphinate ligands. The catalytic abilities of these complexes for the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as oxidant were explored as well. Various spectroscopic methods, such as IR, UV-vis, and NMR are used to characterize the nature of these complexes. Crystal structures of compounds MoO2Cl2(OPPh2CH2OH)2, WO2Cl2(OPPh2CH2OH)2, Mo2O4Cl2[(HOCH2)PhPOO]2, (CH3O)2(O)W(μ-O)(μ-O2PPh2)2W(O)(CH3O)2, and Mo4(µ3-O)4(µ-O2PR2)4O4 (R=Ph, Me, ClCH2, o-C6H4(CH2)2) are also presented. The syntheses, and structural characterization of three copper(II) coordination polymers bearing 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate ligand are described in Chapter 6. Two copper(II) coordination polymers, [Cu2(3,5-dhb)2(pyridine)4]n, and [Cu2(3,5-dhb)4]n were afforded based on different amount of pyridine used in the reaction. The structures of these complexes are further built into 2D or 3D networks via inter or intra hydrogen bonds. The syntheses and structural characterization of the zinc(II) monomer, Zn(3,5-dhb)2(pyridine)2 is also described in this Chapter. Chapter 7 describes the syntheses, and characterization of five dendronized dicopper complexes bearing different generations of Fréchet-type dendrons. The structures of 3,5- bis(benzoyloxl)benzoic acid, 3,5-(PhCOO)2PhCOOH (G1), Cu2(3,5-dhb)4(THF)2, Cu2(G1)4(pyridine)2, and Cu2(G1)4(CH3OH)2 were characterized unambiguously by single X-ray diffraction. In addition, all compounds were characterized by FT-IR, UV-vis spectroscopy and elemental analyses.

A molecular, porous crystalline material constructed from neutral helical coordination polymers incorporating manganese(II) ions and two types of bridging ligands, namely the deprotonated form of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-nitrobenzaldehyde (HL) and isobutyrate (iB−), has been obtained and structurally characterized. Structural analysis reveals that within the coordination polymer each benzaldehyde derivative ligates two manganese ions in 6-membered chelating rings, and the isobutyrate ligands cooperatively chelate either two or three manganese ions. The solid state assembly of the resulting polymeric chains of formula [Mn4(L)2(iB)6]n (1), described in the polar space group R3c, is associated with tubular channels occupied by MeCN solvent molecules (1·xMeCN; x ≤ 9). TGA profiles and PXRD measurements demonstrate that the crystallinity of the solid remains intact in its fully desolvated form, and its stability and crystallinity are ensured up to a temperature of 190 °C. Gas adsorption properties of desolvated crystals were probed, but no remarkable sorption capacity of N2 and only a limited one for CO2 could be observed. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal an antiferromagnetic type of coupling between adjacent manganese(II) ions along the helical chains with energy parameters J1 = −5.9(6) cm−1 and J2 = −1.8(9) cm−1.

Self – assembly is a powerful tool for the construction of highly organized nanostructures. Therefore, the possibility to control and predict pathways of molecular ordering on the nanoscale level is a critical issue for the production of materials with tunable and adaptive macroscopic properties. 2D polymers are attractive objects for the field of material sciences due to their exceptional properties. [1] As shown before, amphiphilic oligopyrenotides (produced via automated solid-phase synthesis) form rod–like supramolecular polymers in water. [2] These assemblies form 1D objects. [3] By applying certain changes to the design of the oligopyrenotide units the dimensionality of the formed assemblies can be influenced. Herein, we demonstrate that Py3 (see Figure 1) forms defined supramolecular assemblies under thermodynamic conditions in water. To study Py3 self-assembly, we carried out whole set of spectroscopic (UV/vis, fluorescence, DLS) and microscopic experiments (AFM). The obtained results suggest that oligopyrenotides with the present type of geometry and linker length leads to formation of 2D supramolecular assemblies.

One of the biggest issues of modern materials science is developing of strategies to create large and ordered assemblies in the form of discrete nanoscale objects. Oligopyrenotides (OPs) represent novel class of amphiphilic molecules which tend to self-assemble forming highly ordered structures. As has been already shown OPs are able to form 1D («rod-like») supramolecular polymer [1]. Since programmed arraying of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in structurally defined objects could offer enhanced performance over the individual components, prediction and controlling of their spatial arrangement remains challenging. Herein we demonstrate that certain changes to design of pyrene’s molecular core allow Py3 form 2D supramolecular assemblies («nanosheets») instead of 1D. Two dimensional supramolecular polymers are attractive objects due to their exceptional properties which originate from in-plan alignment of molecular units in the sheets with constant thickness ~ 2 nm [2]. These assemblies have high degree of internal order: the interior consists of hydrophobic pyrenes and alkyl chains, whereas the exterior exists as a net of hydrophilic, negatively charged phosphates. The Py3 units are hold up by non-covalent interactions what makes these assemblies totally reversible. Moreover the polymerization occurs via nucleation-elongation mechanism. To study Py3 self-assembly, we carried out whole set of spectroscopic (UV/vis, fluorescence, DLS) and microscopic experiments (AFM)

Very important aspects of the modern nanotechnology are control and prediction of arraying patterns of opto- and electroactive molecules in discrete objects on nanoscale level both on surface and solution. Consequqntly, a self-assembly of small molucules provides such an opportunity. For example, oligopyrenotides (OPs, short amphiphilic pyrene oligomers) represent a novel class of amphiphilic molecules which tend to aggegate in aqueous phase. As has been already shown, OPs are able to form 1D supramolecular polymer only under high salt concentration. Since programmed arraying of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in structurally defined objects could offer enhanced performance over the individual components, prediction and controlling of their spatial arrangement remains challenging. Herein we demonstrate that substitution type of the pyrene is crutial, and it determines a morphology of the assemblies. Thus, a 1.6-linkage causes a formation of large, free-standing 2D supromolecular polymers with a thickness 2 nm. These assemblies possess a high degree of an internal order: the interior consists of hydrophobic pyrenes and alkyl chains, whereas the exterior exists as a net of hydrophilic negatively charged phosphates. Contrary, a 1.8-linkage exclusiveley leads to a formation of long (up to a few micrometer), nanometer thick helical supramolecular polymers. These structures tend to form even more complex structures (bundles, superhelixes). Moreover for both molecules, the polymerizations occurs via a nucleation-elongation mechanism. To study Py3 self-assembly, we carried out whole set of spectroscopic (UV/vis, fluorescence, DLS) and microscopic experiments (AFM).
