Die Vermittlung des heimlichen Lehrplans im Klassenraum : - Beobachtungen zu genderspezifischen Interaktionen mittels experimentellem Design

Der heimliche Lehrplan beschreibt soziale Werte, Normen und Regeln, welcher als Sozialisationsprozess den Schulalltag beeinflusst. Die eigens für die Thesis erstellten Hypothesen fragen nach der Validität der Methode sowie genderspezifischen Interaktionen. Schwerpunkt dieser Bachelor-Thesis sind Beobachtungen in zwei Sekundarschulen. Das Untersuchungsdesign ist experimentell an den Erhebungsbogen von zwei amerikanischen Wissenschaftlerinnen aus dem Jahr 1993 angelehnt. Nach einer Pretestphase sowie Modifizierungsprozess wurde das gewonnene Material quantitativ mithilfe des SPSS-Programms und qualitativ durch die Inhaltsanalyse aufbereitet und ausgewertet. Die Hypothesen werden durch die Auswertung und mithilfe von Gütekriterien beantwortet, sodass die Methodenvalidität größtenteils belegt werden kann. Tendenzen für geschlechterspezifische Interaktionen sind erkennbar, allerdings schwer zu generalisieren. Im Fazit wird die Bedeutung des heimlichen Lehrplans sowie die Geschlechtergerechtigkeit in Schulen diskutiert.

Collusion in growing and shrinking markets: empirical evidence from experimental duopolies

We study collusive behaviour in experimental duopolies that compete in prices under dynamic demand conditions. In one treatment the demand grows at a constant rate. In the other treatment the demand declines at another constant rate. The rates are chosen so that the evolution of the demand in one case is just the reverse in time than the one for the other case. We use a box-design demand function so that there are no issues of finding and co-ordinating on the collusive price. Contrary to game-theoretic reasoning, our results show that collusion is significantly larger when the demand shrinks than when it grows. We conjecture that the prospect of rapidly declining profit opportunities exerts a disciplining effect on firms that facilitates collusion and discourages deviation.

On the design of peer punishment experiments

We discuss how technologies of peer punishment might bias the results that are observed in experiments. A crucial parameter is the “fine-to-fee” ratio, which describes by how much the punished subjects income is reduced relatively to the fee the punishing subject has to pay to inflict punishment. We show that a punishment technology commonly used in experiments embeds a variable fine-to-fee ratio and show that it confounds the empirical findings about why, whom, and how much subjects punish.

Competition with forward contracts: a laboratory analysis motivated by electricity market design

We use experiments to study the efficiency effects for a market as a whole of adding the possibility of forward contracting to a pre-existing spot market. We deal separately with the cases where spot market competition is in quantities and where it is in supply functions. In both cases we compare the effect of adding a contract market with the introduction of an additional competitor, changing the market structure from a triopoly to a quadropoly. We find that, as theory suggests, for both types of competition the introduction of a forward market significantly lowers prices. The combination of supply function competition with a forward market leads to high efficiency levels.

1st National Accessiblity Plan 2004-2012: achieving equal opportunities and full participation through design for all

According to official statistics, disabled people in Spain number 3.5 million and make up 8.8% of the Spanish population. This group of people are increasingly being recognised as members of society with equal rights, and many of their demands are gradually being transformed into solutions that benefit society as a whole. One example is improved accessibility. Accessible built environments are more human and inclusive places, as well as being easier to get around. Improved accessibility is now recognised as a requirement shared by all members of society, although it is achieved thanks to the demands of disabled people and their representatives. The 1st National Accessibility Plan is a strategic framework for action aimed at ensuring that new products, services and built environments are designed to be accessible for as many people as possible (Design for All) and that existing ones are gradually duly adapted.

Diseño del subsistema RF para el receptor SAR biestático en banda-C SABRINA

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo diseñar un nuevo receptor SAR biestático para el sistema SABRINA (SAR Bistatic fixed Receiver for INterferometric Applications) caracterizando el sistema que ya existía. El nuevo dispositivo deberá cumplir con las características y requisitos del escenario teniendo en cuenta la potencia recibida y el ruido de cuantificación de la tarjeta digitalizadora. Con este fin se introducen previamente conocimientos de teoría RADAR y SAR. Además, se deberá compactar al máximo el sistema para conseguir un receptor autocontenido que facilite su traslado. Para tal fin se ha incorporado a la caja del receptor un sintetizador programable que actúa de oscilador local de las cadenas de recepción y una fuente de alimentación que provee la tensión a todos los componentes activos del dispositivo. Por otra parte el proyecto ilustra las diferentes campañas de experimentos que se han realizado durante el periodo de trabajo.

Rational design of an organometallic glutathione transferase inhibitor.

Double trouble: A hybrid organic-inorganic (organometallic) inhibitor was designed to target glutathione transferases. The metal center is used to direct protein binding, while the organic moiety acts as the active-site inhibitor (see picture). The mechanism of inhibition was studied using a range of biophysical and biochemical methods.

Single-cell gene-expression profiling reveals qualitatively distinct CD8 T cells elicited by different gene-based vaccines.

CD8 T cells play a key role in mediating protective immunity against selected pathogens after vaccination. Understanding the mechanism of this protection is dependent upon definition of the heterogeneity and complexity of cellular immune responses generated by different vaccines. Here, we identify previously unrecognized subsets of CD8 T cells based upon analysis of gene-expression patterns within single cells and show that they are differentially induced by different vaccines. Three prime-boost vector combinations encoding HIV Env stimulated antigen-specific CD8 T-cell populations of similar magnitude, phenotype, and functionality. Remarkably, however, analysis of single-cell gene-expression profiles enabled discrimination of a majority of central memory (CM) and effector memory (EM) CD8 T cells elicited by the three vaccines. Subsets of T cells could be defined based on their expression of Eomes, Cxcr3, and Ccr7, or Klrk1, Klrg1, and Ccr5 in CM and EM cells, respectively. Of CM cells elicited by DNA prime-recombinant adenoviral (rAd) boost vectors, 67% were Eomes(-) Ccr7(+) Cxcr3(-), in contrast to only 7% and 2% stimulated by rAd5-rAd5 or rAd-LCMV, respectively. Of EM cells elicited by DNA-rAd, 74% were Klrk1(-) Klrg1(-)Ccr5(-) compared with only 26% and 20% for rAd5-rAd5 or rAd5-LCMV. Definition by single-cell gene profiling of specific CM and EM CD8 T-cell subsets that are differentially induced by different gene-based vaccines will facilitate the design and evaluation of vaccines, as well as enable our understanding of mechanisms of protective immunity.
