G'day Gondwana - the final accretion of a supercontinent: U-Pb ages from the post-orogenic Sao Vicente Granite, northern Paraguay Belt, Brazil

The Paraguay Belt in central South America is part of a larger chain of orogenic belts, including the Araguaia Belt to the northeast and potentially the Pampean Belt to the south, which are believed to mark the suture zone of the Clymene Ocean - interpreted amongst the youngest of the Gondwana amalgamation orogens. The post-orogenic Sao Vicente Granite crops out in the northern Paraguay Belt and cuts the basal unit of the deformed and metamorphosed Cuiaba Group. The age of this granite therefore provides a long sort after minimum age for orogenesis within the belt. Dating crystallisation of this important intrusion is challenging due to the presence of considerable common-Pb. However, based on LA-ICPMS dating of more than 100 zircons from three separate samples we interpret a robust crystallisation age for the Sao Vicente batholith at 518 +/- 4 Ma. This age constrains the termination of deformation within the Paraguay Belt and the final accretion of the supercontinent Gondwana. (C) 2011 International Association for Gondwana Research. Temporal variability of chlorophyll-a in the São Vicente estuary

Estuaries are extremely dynamic environments that are vulnerable to anthropogenic alterations. Thus, monitoring phytoplankton abundances and composition is an essential tool for the prediction of eutrophication and its effects on coastal ecosystems. Phytoplankton biomass, as chlorophyll-a, in the São Vicente estuary (Brazil) varies in response to tidal cycles and seasonal rainfall. Objectives. To present two datasets designed to assess the relationship between chlorophyll-a and changes in water turbidity driven by tide and rain. Methods. Weekly observations were made in the shallow embayment (February to September 2008; site 1) and observations recorded on alternate days (summer 2010, site 2). Results. At site 1, turbidity differed between high and low tides, but on most days was over 3000 RU, maintaining moderate chlorophyll-a levels (4 mg.m-3) and only two blooms developed during low turbidity. Site 2 mean turbidity was 1500 RU, nutrient level was higher during neap tides and phytoplankton blooms were mainly observed at the end of neap tides at 15-day intervals, dominated by chain-forming diatoms and occasionally flagellates and pennate diatoms. Conclusions. Taxonomic composition of the blooms was different and their frequency altered by events characterized by intense freshwater discharges from the Henry Borden Hydroelectric Dam (> 9*106.m³), inhibiting phytoplankton accumulation during neap tide periods.

[ES] Pretendemos realizar el inventario y la catalogación de los fondos fotográficos de la Institución Ferial de Canarias (INFECAR), mediante el uso de las nuevas tecnologías informáticas, la digitalización de los originales y su descripción detallada en áreas y campos, dentro de bases de datos especializadas. Para posteriormente, con ese nuevo archivo creado, estudiaremos y analizaremos en sus diferentes vertientes, la importancia de la imagen (fotografías, obras de arte, arquitectura...) como elemento vertebrador de la propia historia de la Institución Ferial (imagen corporativa), que tiene su lógica plasmación en la sociedad canaria que la ampara.

Razones para un Exilio Interior. Vicente Aleixandre y la Guerra Civil española

[ES]El poeta Vicente Aleixandre prestó su apoyo durante la Guerra Civil española al bando republicano, hasta que en los primeros meses de 1937 los mismos republicanos lo detuvieron y lo llevaron a la cárcel, aunque antes de las veinticuatro horas fue puesto en libertad. A partir de ese momento –y tras un intento frustrado de salir del país– se retiró de la vida pública y optó por el silencio. Acabada la guerra, mantuvo una distancia crítica con el régimen franquista e hizo cuanto le fue posible por la reconciliación entre las dos Españas.

Igor Stravinskij (1882-1971) utilizzò di sovente fonti preesistenti come parte integrante del proprio artigianato compositivo. In questa tesi dottorale ho studiato il processo creativo di Stravinskij negli anni Venti sulle musiche di Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij (1840-1893). Nella prima parte della dissertazione ho indagato la Sleeping Princess (1921) e il successivo Mariage d’Aurore (1922-1929), entrambi allestiti dai Ballets russes di Sergej Djagilev (1872-1929). Dopo aver localizzato e contestualizzato le fonti manoscritte e i materiali d’uso, ho ricostruito le ri-orchestrazioni effettuate da Stravinskij della Danse russe (Coda del Pas de deux n. 28) e del Presto del Finale (n. 30), che erano a tutt’oggi inedite. La ricerca sulla Sleeping Princess si è rivelata fondamentale per la conseguente analisi del Baiser de la Fée (1928, Ballets de Mme Ida Rubinstein), balletto basato su pezzi pianistici e romanze per voce e pianoforte di Čajkovskij. Grazie allo studio dello Skizzenbuch VIII, della partitura pianistica manoscritta e di tutte le fonti rinvenute, ho gettato ulteriore luce sul processo compositivo di Stravinskij sulle fonti čajkovskiane. Ho rinvenuto nuove appropriazioni che finora non erano note.

Geological Report of Summer Field Trip 1928

The object of this trip and report was to familiarize the students of the Montana State School of Mines with methods of taking and mapping surface and undergound geology. All surface geology was mapped by means of plane table and alidade, and undergound work by means of Brunton compass and taps. The senior class of the Montana State School of MInes under the supervision of Dr. E.S. Perry performed the work, which covered an area in Madison County including South Boulder Creek, near Jefferson Island, the Silver Star Mining District, and the Alameda Mine, near Virginia City.

Leaching Copper Minerals in the Butte District

The history of mining in Butte is woven about three of our principal metals. The gold placers first attracted the attention of miners in 1863, and reached their peak production in 1867. Silver was the second metal mined, and this operation required the erection of large mills with a consequent increase in mining activity that made the district a prominent producer. Although the presence of copper in the silver ore had been known, the credit for the first development of the copper veins is due Senator W. A. Clark. The original Colusa, Mining Chief, and Gambetta claims were developed to 1872. The ore was freighted by wagon trains 400 miles to Corrine, Utah, thence by rail eastward, some of it going to Swansea, Wales. The cooper production of the "richest hill on earth" has mounted to ten billion pounds.

Alice Salomon (Germany), President 1928/29-1946

Salomon belongs to the known and nevertheless unknown ‘pioneers’ of social work in the world. She founded one of the first Schools of Social Work (Berlin 1908) and was the first president of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (1929-1937). Her theoretical work however is almost forgotten or not really part of the debate about social work history.
