Three experiments are reported which examine the effects of consensus information on majority and minority influence. In all experiments two levels of consensus difference were examined; large (82% versus 18%) and small (52% versus 48%). Experiment 1 showed that a majority source had more influence than a minority source, irrespective of consensus level. Experiment 2 examined the cause of this effect by presenting only the source label ('majority' versus 'minority'), only the consensus information (percentages) or both. The superior influence of the majority was again found when either (a) both source label and consensus information were given (replicating Experiment 1) and (b) only consensus information was given, but not when (c) only the source label was given. The results showed majority influence was due to the consensus information indicating more than 50% of the population supported that position. Experiment 3 also manipulated message quality (strong versus weak arguments) to identify whether systematic processing had occurred. Message quality only had an impact with the minority of 18%. These studies show that consensus information has different effects' for majority and minority influence. For majority influence, having over 50% support is sufficient to cause compliance while for a minority there are advantages to being numerically small, in terms of leading to detailed processing of its message. With loss permeating the lives of all people throughout the entire life span and its potential for serious long-term deleterious effects, providing effective care for those experiencing situations of loss would be an important element of any preventive community-based mental health promotion approach. The low use of mental health services by those confronted with loss, and the lack of such services in many areas, makes it imperative to enhance the competency of the broader community to provide appropriate care during times of loss. Contributory to such care is a sound knowledge of the literature concerning loss and grieving. The broken leg analogy of grief presented in this article integrates the traditional and emerging grief theories and empirical evidence into an analogy of grieving that can be easily communicated to the general community, is relevant to many losses. and vet upholds the differing positions concerning grieving held by various schools of psychiatric thought.

In an overview of some of the central issues concerning the impact and effects of new technology in adolescence, this article questions the reality of the net generation before considering the interplay of new and old technologies, the internet as both communication and lifestyle resource, and newer technologies like text messaging and webcams.

Peer support interventions for people with cancer, their families, and friends have been widely used throughout the world. The present study reviewed the research literature on psychosocial oncology over the past decade to assess the prevalence and contribution of articles on peer support. Using CD-Rom databases, 25 articles were retrieved for review. In each article, patients or their family members were the target group for supportive interventions, which were primarily for the delivery of peer support and included either a qualitative or quantitative evaluation of the program. A definitional taxonomy for peer support interventions, which identified eight discrete settings, was derived from three key dimensions: style of supervision, interpersonal context, and mode of delivery. The studies suggested that peer support programs help by providing emotional and informational support from the perspective of shared personal experience. However, a paucity of research-particularly randomized controlled trials-was noted. The reasons may include inherent difficulties in isolating for study what is essentially a naturalistically occurring interpersonal dynamic from the complex social and community contexts from which it emanates. The authors discuss the gap between practice and theory in this area and recommend a broader and more inclusive view of supportive care for people with cancer. (C) 2003 by The Haworth Press, Inc. La globalizaci??n econ??mica ha impactado fuertemente en el mercado laboral europeo, abriendo puertas para el trabajo precario. Mientras el capital se torna global, el trabajo permanece local y m??s sumiso a los flujos econ??micos mundiales. Adem??s, los patrones de la sociedad de consumo se han consolidado, promoviendo nuevas desigualdades sociales y aumentando los riesgos de exclusi??n y vulnerabilidad social. La ca??da progresiva del industrialismo tambi??n afecta las principales bases de la estructura social como los roles de g??nero o las relaciones familiares. Diferentes redes aparecen como clave para la inclusi??n, especialmente en el actual contexto de crisis del Estado de Bienestar Social en que se encuentra Europa. Es decir, el an??lisis de la exclusi??n social debe tener en cuenta la evoluci??n de las pol??ticas sociales en toda Europa y la tendencia actual de descentralizaci??n y focalizaci??n de los ser vicios sociales. El objetivo de este art??culo es, por lo tanto, no s??lo describir el fen??meno de la exclusi??n social, sino tambi??n lanzar ideas para construir nuevos criterios de redefinici??n de las pol??ticas sociales.
O ter e o ser : representações sociais da adolescência entre adolescentes de inserção urbana e rural

Fundamentando-se na Teoria das Representações Sociais este trabalho analisa como adolescentes de diferentes inserções sociais representam a adolescência e dão sentido ao período em que vivem. Participaram desse estudo 360 adolescentes entre as idades de 14 e 23 anos: 180 (90 do sexo feminino e 90 do sexo masculino) residentes em região urbana, estudantes de escola particular, localizada em bairro considerado de classe média alta e alta, e 180 (90 do sexo feminino e 90 do sexo masculino) residentes em uma região rural e que estudam em escola agrotécnica pública. Os resultados indicaram que a adolescência para os dois grupos está ancorada na percepção tradicional da adolescência como fase universal e transitória. Ocorre, entretanto, uma diferenciação de acordo com os elementos culturais presentes nos grupos. Dessa forma, verificamos formas diferentes de vivenciar a adolescência, corroborando assim, a tendência mais recente que propõe a adolescência como uma condição construída historicamente.

This study demonstrates and applies a social network methodology for studying the dynamics of hierarchies in organizations. Social network (blockmodel) analysis of verbal networks in four hospitals contrasted hierarchical and structurally equivalent partitions of the sociomatrices of frequent ties and perceptions of organizational culture. It was found that the verbal networks in these organizations follow a center periphery pattern rather than a hierarchical logic and that perceptions of culture vary more by verbal network than by formal hierarchy. The perceptions of culture of central groups in one organization are much like those of peripheral groups in another. In all four hospitals, structurally equivalent social networks are more important in predicting subcultures than are hierarchical groupings and hierarchy has a limited impact on the development of verbal networks. These findings suggest the value of an amoeba rather than a pyramid metaphor in interpreting the cultures and relational structures of organizations.

RESUMO: Esta intervenção propõe-se apresentar as relações da escola da actualidade com as famílias dos alunos, com todas as dificuldades e desafios que estas relações implicam. Seguem-se a exposição de dois casos, dois alunos inseridos no Âmbito do projecto Novas Oportunidades. ABSTRACT: This intervention proposes to describe the relationships between School and student’s families of today, with their issues and challenges that are implied. It is followed by the presentation of two students within the context of New Opportunities programme.

The main purpose of this research is to identify the hidden knowledge and learning mechanisms in the organization in order to disclosure the tacit knowledge and transform it into explicit knowledge. Most firms usually tend to duplicate their efforts acquiring extra knowledge and new learning skills while forgetting to exploit the existing ones thus wasting one life time resources that could be applied to increase added value within the firm overall competitive advantage. This unique value in the shape of creation, acquisition, transformation and application of learning and knowledge is not disseminated throughout the individual, group and, ultimately, the company itself. This work is based on three variables that explain the behaviour of learning as the process of construction and acquisition of knowledge, namely internal social capital, technology and external social capital, which include the main attributes of learning and knowledge that help us to capture the essence of this symbiosis. Absorptive Capacity provides the right tool to explore this uncertainty within the firm it is possible to achieve the perfect match between learning skills and knowledge needed to support the overall strategy of the firm. This study has taken in to account a sample of the Portuguese textile industry and it is based on a multisectorial analysis that makes it possible a crossfunctional analysis to check on the validity of results in order to better understand and capture the dynamics of organizational behavior.

Na presente comunicação apresentamos parte dos resultados de um estudo de caso desenvolvido pelos autores no âmbito do Observatório de Segurança Escolar (OSE). A investigação a que nos propusemos resulta do desenvolvimento e aprofundamento de estudos que a equipa do OSE tem vindo a realizar nos últimos 6 anos (Sebastião, Campos, Alves e Merlini: 2010; Sebastião, Campos e Merlini: 2011) e justifica-se pela necessidade de análises contextualizadas da problemática de violência na escola, no sentido de contribuir para futuras estratégias e mecanismos de intervenção e prevenção sobre esta forma de violência. Tendo como ponto de partida os dados estatísticos nacionais sobre os incidentes de violência nas escolas1, procurámos compreender como os traços identificados a nível nacional se traduzem e são reconfigurados territorialmente. Em particular, saber porque é que escolas situadas em territórios com condições sociais idênticas apresentam níveis de violência e abordagens de regulação diferenciadas. Partindo de uma abordagem meso analítica do fenómeno de violência na escola, que engloba as perspetivas organizacional (Burns e Flam: 2000; Mouzelis: 2000; Torres e Palhares: 2010; Lima: 2001) e ecológica (Fuchs: 2008; Machado: 2008; Carvalho, 2010; Leal: 2010), o estudo privilegiou uma estratégia metodológica intensiva e desenvolveu-se em três territórios do Concelho de Sintra. Nesta apresentação o foco analítico incide sobre as estratégias e mecanismos acionados pelas escolas nos processos de regulação (prevenção e intervenção) das ocorrências de violência na escola, considerando a diversidade de condições contextuais e organizacionais. Ou seja, analisamos o modo como as escolas respondem aos incidentes e procuram pacificar os seus quotidianos e as condições em que o fazem. Tendo em conta as possibilidades de ação encontradas, identificámos um conjunto de fatores significativos nos processos de regulação da violência, entre os quais destacamos: as lideranças e práticas organizacionais; as orientações para a intervenção e a importância da priorização da violência e os instrumentos para intervir, como a constituição de gabinetes de mediação de conflitos. Face às condições para agir, verificámos que as escolas demonstram ter margem para adequar, planear e implementar estratégias de resposta, adotando modalidades de resolução da conflitualidade/violência, diversificadas, independentemente desta ter origem, ou não, em condições externas à escola.

A ideação paranoide é um processo cognitivo e social que pode ser considerado normativo (e.g. sentimentos de desconfiança ocasionais) ou disfuncional, constituindo-se, neste ultimo caso, como um sintoma psicopatológico (e.g. delírios paranoides). Mesmo em níveis subclínicos, a ideação paranoide pode constituir um entrave para o bom funcionamento interpessoal, na medida em que o comportamento disruptivo que dela advém pode afetar todas as esferas de funcionamento do indivíduo (e.g. relações familiares, entre pares, profissionais e/ou académicas). O presente estudo explorará a influência dos estilos parentais e o papel mediador da ideação paranoide na agressividade durante a adolescência, bem como as implicações para a prevenção e intervenção em contextos clínicos e educacionais.
