An Investigation into the Recovery of Indium from Fume Residue

Several months were required to produce a single gram of indium. Consequently, the industrial history of the metal is extremely short. In view of the unique properties that indium has demonstrated in this short period, it is probable that indium is still in its early stage of development. However, the commer­cial applications of the metal are well established and indium is now produced on a commercial scale. It is obtainable as the metal or in solution for electroplat­ing.

The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain if advantage could be taken of the copper in the precipitates as a collecting agent of the precious metals in the direct smelting furnace.The products produced to be low grade anode bullion and a slag low in precious metals, high in zinc and lead.

Alpine Plants and Climate Change in Glacier National Park, New Zealand and Scotland

The first part of the lecture details a study of how receding glaciers and snowfields in Montana, New Zealand and Scotland affect the alpine plants that grow along and near their edges. Measuring and monitoring techniques are included. The second part describes the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLOBAL) whose purpose is "to establish and maintain a world-wide long-term observation network in alpine environments. Vegetation and temperature data collected at the GLORIA sites will be used for discerning trends in species diversity and temperature."

Dr. Rossi discusses the common errors that are made when fitting statistical models to data. Focuses on the planning, data analysis, and interpretation phases of a statistical analysis, and highlights the errors that are commonly made by researchers of these phases. The implications of these commonly made errors are discussed along with a discussion of the methods that can be used to prevent these errors from occurring. A prescription for carrying out a correct statistical analysis will be discussed.

Dr. Russell Fielding of the University of Denver discusses his study of artisanal whaling traditions throughout the Atlantic, with field sites in the Faroe Islands, Newfoundland, and the Caribbean.

The High School Transition: A Step Ahead or a Downward Trend

This research was recorded to discourage the placement of 7th and 8th graders into the Anaconda High School, because it was thought that the earlier transition to the high school environment causes poor and illegal decisions to be made as well causing a decrease in the responsibility of students. The research was conducted using the survey research method, and the surveys that were dispersed to the 7th grade through sophomore classes took all possible ethical concerns into consideration. The data collected showed significant increases in the consumption of both alcohol and marijuana after students had made the transition into high school, as well as decreases in student’s levels of responsibility if a substance was being abused.
