Many endangered species worldwide are found in remnant populations, often within fragmented landscapes. However, when possible, an understanding of the natural extent of population structure and dispersal behaviour of threatened species would assist in their conservation and management. The brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata), a once abundant and widespread rock-wallaby species across southeastern Australia, has become nearly extinct across much of the southern part of its range. However, the northern part of the species' range still sustains many small colonies closely distributed across suitable habitat, providing a rare opportunity to investigate the natural population dynamics of a listed threatened species. We used 12 microsatellite markers to investigate genetic diversity, population structure and gene flow among brush-tailed rock-wallaby colonies within and among two valley regions with continuous habitat in southeast Queensland. We documented high and signifcant levels of population genetic structure between rock-wallaby colonies embedded in continuous escarpment habitat and forest. We found a strong and significant pattern of isolation-by-distance among colonies indicating restricted gene flow over a small geographic scale (< 10 km) and conclude that gene flow is more likely limited by intrinsic factors rather than environmental factors. In addition, we provide evidence that genetic diversity was significantly lower in colonies located in a more isolated valley region compared to colonies located in a valley region surrounded by continuous habitat. These findings shed light on the processes that have resulted in the endangered status of rock-wallaby species in Australia and they have strong implications for the conservation and management of both the remaining 'connected' brush-tailed rock-wallaby colonies in the northern parts of the species' range and the remnant endangered populations in the south.

As an alternative to traditional evolutionary algorithms (EAs), population-based incremental learning (PBIL) maintains a probabilistic model of the best individual(s). Originally, PBIL was applied in binary search spaces. Recently, some work has been done to extend it to continuous spaces. In this paper, we review two such extensions of PBIL. An improved version of the PBIL based on Gaussian model is proposed that combines two main features: a new updating rule that takes into account all the individuals and their fitness values and a self-adaptive learning rate parameter. Furthermore, a new continuous PBIL employing a histogram probabilistic model is proposed. Some experiments results are presented that highlight the features of the new algorithms.

Stereology and other image analysis methods have enabled rapid and objective quantitative measurements to be made on histological sections. These mesurements may include total volumes, surfaces, lengths and numbers of cells and blood vessels or pathological lesions. Histological features, however, may not be randomly distributed across a section but exhibit 'dispersion', a departure from randomness either towards regularity or aggregation. Information of population dispersion may be valuable not only in understanding the two-or three-dimensional structure but also in elucidating the pathogenesis of lesions in pathological conditions. This article reviews some of the statistical methods available for studying dispersion. These range from simple tests of whether the distribution of a histological faeture departs significantly from random to more complex methods which can detect the intensity of aggregation and the sizes, distribution and spacing of the clusters.

The cause of the respective rough and smooth fatigue failure surfaces of Neoprene GS : Neoprene W and Neoprene GS : natural rubber vulcanisates is investigated. The contrasting morphology of the vulcanisates is found to be the major factor determining the fatigue behaviour of the blends. Neoprene GS and Neoprene W appear to form homogeneous blends which exhibit physical properties and fatigue failure surfaces intermediate between those of the two horropolymers. Neoprene GS and natural rubber exhibit heterogeneity when blended together. The morphology of these blends is found to influence both the fatigue resistance and failure surface of the vulcanisates. Exceptional uncut and cut initiated fatigue lives are observed for blends having an interconnecting network morphology. The network structure and cross-link density of the elastomers in the blends and the addition of carbon black and antioxidant are all found to influence the fatigue resistance but not the failure mechanism of the vulcanisate.

Population measures for genetic programs are defined and analysed in an attempt to better understand the behaviour of genetic programming. Some measures are simple, but do not provide sufficient insight. The more meaningful ones are complex and take extra computation time. Here we present a unified view on the computation of population measures through an information hypertree (iTree). The iTree allows for a unified and efficient calculation of population measures via a basic tree traversal. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

Implementation of a Monte Carlo simulation for the solution of population balance equations (PBEs) requires choice of initial sample number (N0), number of replicates (M), and number of bins for probability distribution reconstruction (n). It is found that Squared Hellinger Distance, H2, is a useful measurement of the accuracy of Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, and can be related directly to N0, M, and n. Asymptotic approximations of H2 are deduced and tested for both one-dimensional (1-D) and 2-D PBEs with coalescence. The central processing unit (CPU) cost, C, is found in a power-law relationship, C= aMNb0, with the CPU cost index, b, indicating the weighting of N0 in the total CPU cost. n must be chosen to balance accuracy and resolution. For fixed n, M × N0 determines the accuracy of MC prediction; if b > 1, then the optimal solution strategy uses multiple replications and small sample size. Conversely, if 0 < b < 1, one replicate and a large initial sample size is preferred. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 2394–2402, 2015

To overcome limitations of conventional approaches for the identification of Eimeria species of chickens, we have established high resolution electrophoretic procedures using genetic markers in ribosomal DNA. The first and second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1 and ITS-2) regions of ribosomal DNA were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from genomic DNA samples representing five species of Eimeria (E. acervulina, E. brunetti, E. maxima, E. necatrix and E. tenella), denatured and then subjected to denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (D-PAGE) or single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. Differences in D-PAGE profiles for both the ITS-1 and ITS-2 fragments (combined with an apparent lack of variation within individual species) enabled the unequivocal identification of the five species, and SSCP allowed the detection of population variation between some isolates representing E. acervulina, which remained undetected by D-PAGE. The establishment of these approaches has important implications for controlling the purity of laboratory lines of Eimeria, for diagnosis and for studying the epidemiology of coccidiosis.

Finding the optimum location for placing a dam on a river is usually a complicated process which generally forces thousands of people to flee their homes because they will be inundated during the filling of the dam. Dams could also attract people living in the surrounding area after their construction. The goal of this research is to check for dam attractiveness for people by comparing growth rates of population density in surrounding areas after dam construction to those associated with the period antecedent to the dam construction. To this aim, 1859 dams across the United States of America and high-resolution population distribution from 1790 to 2010 are examined. By grouping dams as a function of their main purpose, water supply dams are found to be, as expected, the most attractive dams for people, with the biggest growth in population density. Irrigation dams are next, followed by hydroelectricity, flood control, Navigation, and finally Recreation dams. Fishery dams and dams for other uses suffered a decrease in population in the years after their construction. The regions with the greatest population growth were found approximately 40-45 km from the dam and at distances greater than 90 km, whereas the regions with the greatest population decline or only a modest gain were located within 10-15 km of the dam.
