OER-based learning has the potential to overcome many shortcomings and problems of traditional education. It is not hampered by IP restrictions; can depend on collaborative, cumulative, iterative refinement of resources; and the digital form provides unprecedented flexibility with respect to configuration and delivery. The OER community is a progressive group of educators and learners with decades of learning research to draw from, who know that we must prepare learners for an evolving and diverse reality. Despite this OER tends to replicate the unsuccessful characteristics of traditional education. To remedy this we may need to remember the importance of imperfection, mistakes, problems, disagreement, and the incomplete for engaged learning, and relinquish our notions of perfection, acknowledging that learners learn differently and we need diverse learners. We must stretch our perceptions of quality and provide mechanisms for engaging the incredible pool of educators globally to fulfill the promise of inclusive education.

This paper investigates the role of learning by private agents and the central bank (two-sided learning) in a New Keynesian framework in which both sides of the economy have asymmetric and imperfect knowledge about the true data generating process. We assume that all agents employ the data that they observe (which may be distinct for different sets of agents) to form beliefs about unknown aspects of the true model of the economy, use their beliefs to decide on actions, and revise these beliefs through a statistical learning algorithm as new information becomes available. We study the short-run dynamics of our model and derive its policy recommendations, particularly with respect to central bank communications. We demonstrate that two-sided learning can generate substantial increases in volatility and persistence, and alter the behavior of the variables in the model in a signifficant way. Our simulations do not converge to a symmetric rational expectations equilibrium and we highlight one source that invalidates the convergence results of Marcet and Sargent (1989). Finally, we identify a novel aspect of central bank communication in models of learning: communication can be harmful if the central bank's model is substantially mis-specified

Hintergrund: Trotz ihrer Etablierung als essentieller Bestandteil der medizinischen Weiter-/Fortbildung werden europa- wie schweizweit kaum Kurse in evidenzbasierter Medizin (ebm) angeboten, die - integriert im klinischen Alltag - gezielt Fertigkeiten in ebm vermitteln. Noch grössere Defizite finden sich bei ebm- Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten für klinische Ausbilder (z.B. Oberärzte). Als Weiterführung eines EU-finanzierten, klinisch integrierten E-learning- Programms für Weiterbildungsassistenten (www.ebm-unity.org) entwickelte eine europäische Gruppe von medical educators gezielt für Ausbilder ein e-learning-Curriculum zur Vermittlung von ebm im Rahmen der klinischen Weiterbildung. Methode: Die Entwicklung des Curriculums umfasst folgende Schritte: Beschreibung von Lernzielen, Identifikation von klinisch relevanten Lernumgebungen, Entwicklung von Lerninhalten und exemplarischen didaktischen Strategien, zugeschnitten auf die jeweilige Lernumgebungen, Design von web-basierten Selbst-Lernsequenzen mit Möglichkeiten zur Selbstevaluation, Erstellung eines Handbuchs. Ergebnisse: Lernziele des Tutoren-Lehrgangs sind der Erwerb von Fertigkeiten zur Vermittlung der 5 klassischen ebm-Schritte: PICO- (Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome)-Fragen, Literatursuche, kritische Literaturbewertung, Übertragung der Ergebnisse im eigenen Setting und Implementierung). Die Lehrbeispiele zeigen angehenden ebm-Tutoren, wie sich typische klinische Situationen wie z.B. Stationsvisite, Ambulanzsprechstunde, Journalclub, offizielle Konferenzen, Audit oder das klinische Assessment von Weiterbildungsassistenten gezielt für die Vermittlung von ebm nutzen lassen. Kurze E-Learning-Module mit exemplarischen «real-life»-Video-Clips erlauben flexibles Lernen zugeschnitten auf das knappe Zeitkontingent von Ärzten. Eine Selbst-Evaluation ermöglicht die Überprüfung der gelernten Inhalte. Die Pilotierung des Tutoren-Lehrgangs mit klinisch tätigen Tutoren sowie die Übersetzung des Moduls in weitere Sprachen sind derzeit in Vorbereitung. chlussfolgerung: Der modulare Train-the-Trainer-Kurs zur Vermittlung von ebm im klinischen Alltag schliesst eine wichtige Lücke in der Dissemination von klinischer ebm. Webbasierte Beispiele mit kurzen Sequenzen demonstrieren typische Situationen zur Vermittlung der ebm-Kernfertigkeiten und bieten medical educators wie Oberärzten einen niedrigschwelligen Einstieg in «ebm» am Krankenbett. Langfristiges Ziel ist eine europäische Qualifikation für ebm- Learning und -Teaching in der Fort- und Weiterbildung. Learning object economies are marketplaces for the sharing and reuse of learning objects (LO). There are many motivations for stimulating the development of the LO economy. The main reason is the possibility of providing the right content, at the right time, to the right learner according to adequate quality standards in the context of a lifelong learning process; in fact, this is also the main objective of education. However, some barriers to the development of a LO economy, such as the granularity and editability of LO, must be overcome. Furthermore, some enablers, such as learning design generation and standards usage, must be promoted in order to enhance LO economy. For this article, we introduced the integration of distributed learning object repositories (DLOR) as sources of LO that could be placed in adaptive learning designs to assist teachers’ design work. Two main issues presented as a result: how to access distributed LO, and where to place the LO in the learning design. To address these issues, we introduced two processes: LORSE, a distributed LO searching process, and LOOK, a micro context-based positioning process, respectively. Using these processes, the teachers were able to reuse LO from different sources to semi-automatically generate an adaptive learning design without leaving their virtual environment. A layered evaluation yielded good results for the process of placing learning objects from controlled learning object repositories into a learning design, and permitting educators to define different open issues that must be covered when they use uncontrolled learning object repositories for this purpose. The identification and integration of reusable and customizable CSCL (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning) may benefit from the capture of best practices in collaborative learning structuring. The authors have proposed CLFPs (Collaborative Learning Flow Patterns) as a way of collecting these best practices. To facilitate the process of CLFPs by software systems, the paper proposes to specify these patterns using IMS Learning Design (IMS-LD). Thus, teachers without technical knowledge can particularize and integrate CSCL tools. Nevertheless, the support of IMS-LD for describing collaborative learning activities has some deficiencies: the collaborative tools that can be defined in these activities are limited. Thus, this paper proposes and discusses an extension to IMS-LD that enables to specify several characteristics of the use of tools that mediate collaboration. In order to obtain a Unit of Learning based on a CLFP, a three stage process is also proposed. A CLFP-based Unit of Learning example is used to illustrate the process and the need of the proposed extension.

This paper describes a Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) case study in engineering education carried out within the context of a network management course. The case study shows that the use of two computing tools developed by the authors and based on Free- and Open-Source Software (FOSS) provide significant educational benefits over traditional engineering pedagogical approaches in terms of both concepts and engineering competencies acquisition. First, the Collage authoring tool guides and supports the course teacher in the process of authoring computer-interpretable representations (using the IMS Learning Design standard notation) of effective collaborative pedagogical designs. Besides, the Gridcole system supports the enactment of that design by guiding the students throughout the prescribed sequence of learning activities. The paper introduces the goals and context of the case study, elaborates onhow Collage and Gridcole were employed, describes the applied evaluation methodology, anddiscusses the most significant findings derived from the case study.

In this article we try to analyze the learning processes of health literacy skills in informal contexts. We intend to broaden the understanding of the learning process beyond the formal contexts, thus contributing to the elucidation of health professionals on how individuals acquire and manage their knowledge in health matters. Given our goal, we use an analytic corpus constituted by one hundred autobiographical narratives written between 2006 and 2011, in educational contexts but with recognized potential for use in different scientific fields, including health. The results reveal the existence of three different types of modes of learning health literacy skills in informal context: : i) learning that takes place in action, in achieving daily tasks; ii) learning processes that result from problem solving; iii) learning that occurs in an unplanned manner, resulting from accidental circumstances and, in some cases, devoid of intentionality.

OBJECTIVEEvaluating how professionals of family health teams from three municipalities of Pernambuco perceive and interpret the effects of Hansen's disease training.METHODSA qualitative study using the perspective of Habermas. Six focus groups, totaling 33 nurses and 22 doctors were formed. The guide consisted of: reactions to training, learning, transfer of knowledge and organizational results.RESULTSThere were recurrent positive opinions on instructor performance, course materials, and an alert attitude to the occurrence of cases; the negative points were about lack of practical teaching, a lot of information in a short period of time and little emphasis on basic content. Low perceived self-efficacy and low locus of control, ambiguity, conflict of skills and the lack of support for the learning application. Nurses showed greater dissatisfaction with the organizational support.CONCLUSIONThe low effectiveness of training reveals the need to negotiate structured training from work problematization, considering performance conditions.

OBJECTIVETo identify the association between the use of web simulation electrocardiography and the learning approaches, strategies and styles of nursing degree students.METHODA descriptive and correlational design with a one-group pretest-posttest measurement was used. The study sample included 246 students in a Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support nursing class of nursing degree.RESULTSNo significant differences between genders were found in any dimension of learning styles and approaches to learning. After the introduction of web simulation electrocardiography, significant differences were found in some item scores of learning styles: theorist (p < 0.040), pragmatic (p < 0.010) and approaches to learning.CONCLUSIONThe use of a web electrocardiogram (ECG) simulation is associated with the development of active and reflexive learning styles, improving motivation and a deep approach in nursing students.

The influence of proximal olfactory cues on place learning and memory was tested in two different spatial tasks. Rats were trained to find a hole leading to their home cage or a single food source in an array of petri dishes. The two apparatuses differed both by the type of reinforcement (return to the home cage or food reward) and the local characteristics of the goal (masked holes or salient dishes). In both cases, the goal was in a fixed location relative to distant visual landmarks and could be marked by a local olfactory cue. Thus, the position of the goal was defined by two sets of redundant cues, each of which was sufficient to allow the discrimination of the goal location. These experiments were conducted with two strains of hooded rats (Long-Evans and PVG), which show different speeds of acquisition in place learning tasks. They revealed that the presence of an olfactory cue marking the goal facilitated learning of its location and that the facilitation persisted after the removal of the cue. Thus, the proximal olfactory cue appeared to potentiate learning and memory of the goal location relative to distant environmental cues. This facilitating effect was only detected when the expression of spatial memory was not already optimal, i.e., during the early phase of acquisition. It was not limited to a particular strain.

Plasmids carry a wide range of genes that are often involved in bacterial social behaviour. The question of why such genes are frequently mobile has received increasing attention. Here, we use an explicit population genetic approach to model the evolution of plasmid-borne bacterial public goods production. Our findings highlight the importance of both transmission and relatedness as factors driving the evolution of plasmid-borne public goods production. We partition the effects of plasmid transfer of social traits into those of infectivity and the effect of increased relatedness. Our results demonstrate that, owing to its effect on relatedness, plasmid mobility increases the invasion and stability of public goods, in a way not seen in individually beneficial traits. In addition, we show that plasmid transfer increases relatedness when public goods production is rare but this effect declines when production is common, with both scenarios leading to an increase in the frequency of plasmid-borne public goods. Plasmids remain important vectors for the spread of social genes involved in bacterial virulence thus an understanding of their dynamics is highly relevant from a public health perspective.

Among the types of remote sensing acquisitions, optical images are certainly one of the most widely relied upon data sources for Earth observation. They provide detailed measurements of the electromagnetic radiation reflected or emitted by each pixel in the scene. Through a process termed supervised land-cover classification, this allows to automatically yet accurately distinguish objects at the surface of our planet. In this respect, when producing a land-cover map of the surveyed area, the availability of training examples representative of each thematic class is crucial for the success of the classification procedure. However, in real applications, due to several constraints on the sample collection process, labeled pixels are usually scarce. When analyzing an image for which those key samples are unavailable, a viable solution consists in resorting to the ground truth data of other previously acquired images. This option is attractive but several factors such as atmospheric, ground and acquisition conditions can cause radiometric differences between the images, hindering therefore the transfer of knowledge from one image to another. The goal of this Thesis is to supply remote sensing image analysts with suitable processing techniques to ensure a robust portability of the classification models across different images. The ultimate purpose is to map the land-cover classes over large spatial and temporal extents with minimal ground information. To overcome, or simply quantify, the observed shifts in the statistical distribution of the spectra of the materials, we study four approaches issued from the field of machine learning. First, we propose a strategy to intelligently sample the image of interest to collect the labels only in correspondence of the most useful pixels. This iterative routine is based on a constant evaluation of the pertinence to the new image of the initial training data actually belonging to a different image. Second, an approach to reduce the radiometric differences among the images by projecting the respective pixels in a common new data space is presented. We analyze a kernel-based feature extraction framework suited for such problems, showing that, after this relative normalization, the cross-image generalization abilities of a classifier are highly increased. Third, we test a new data-driven measure of distance between probability distributions to assess the distortions caused by differences in the acquisition geometry affecting series of multi-angle images. Also, we gauge the portability of classification models through the sequences. In both exercises, the efficacy of classic physically- and statistically-based normalization methods is discussed. Finally, we explore a new family of approaches based on sparse representations of the samples to reciprocally convert the data space of two images. The projection function bridging the images allows a synthesis of new pixels with more similar characteristics ultimately facilitating the land-cover mapping across images.

THESIS ABSTRACTThis thesis project was aimed at studying the molecular mechanisms underlying learning and memory formation, in particular as they relate to the metabolic coupling between astrocytes and neurons. For that, changes in the metabolic activity of different mice brain regions after 1 or 9 days of training in an eight-arm radial maze were assessed by (14C) 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) autoradiography. Significant differences in the areas engaged during the behavioral task at day 1 (when animals are confronted for the first time to the learning task) and at day 9 (when animals are highly performing) have been identified. These areas include the hippocampus, the fornix, the parietal cortex, the laterodorsal thalamic nucleus and the mammillary bodies at day 1 ; and the anterior cingulate, the retrosplenial cortex and the dorsal striatum at day 9. Two of these cerebral regions (those presenting the greatest changes at day 1 and day 9: the hippocampus and the retrosplenial cortex, respectively) were microdissected by laser capture microscopy and selected genes related to neuron-glia metabolic coupling, glucose metabolism and synaptic plasticity were analyzed by RT-PCR. 2DG and gene expression analysis were performed at three different times: 1) immediately after the end of the behavioral paradigm, 2) 45 minutes and 3) 6 hours after training. The main goal of this study was the identification of the metabolic adaptations following the learning task. Gene expression results demonstrate that the learning task profoundly modulates the pattern of gene expression in time, meaning that these two cerebral regions with high 2DG signal (hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex) have adapted their metabolic molecular machinery in consequence. Almost all studied genes show a higher expression in the hippocampus at day 1 compared to day 9, while an increased expression was found in the retrosplenial cortex at day 9. We can observe these molecular adaptations with a short delay of 45 minutes after the end of the task. However, 6 hours after training a high gene expression was found at day 9 (compared to day 1) in both regions, suggesting that only one day of training is not sufficient to detect transcriptional modifications several hours after the task. Thus, gene expression data match 2DG results indicating a transfer of information in time (from day 1 to day 9) and in space (from the hippocampus to the retrosplenial cortex), and this at a cellular and a molecular level. Moreover, learning seems to modify the neuron-glia metabolic coupling, since several genes involved in this coupling are induced. These results also suggest a role of glia in neuronal plasticity.RESUME DU TRAVAIL DE THESECe projet de thèse a eu pour but l'étude des mécanismes moléculaires qui sont impliqués dans l'apprentissage et la mémoire et, en particulier, à les mettre en rapport avec le couplage métabolique existant entre les astrocytes et les neurones. Pour cela, des changements de l'activité métabolique dans différentes régions du cerveau des souris après 1 ou 9 jours d'entraînement dans un labyrinthe radial à huit-bras ont été évalués par autoradiographie au 2-désoxyglucose (2DG). Des différences significatives dans les régions engagées pendant la tâche comportementale au jour 1 (quand les animaux sont confrontés pour la première fois à la tâche) et au jour 9 (quand les animaux ont déjà appris) ont été identifiés. Ces régions incluent, au jour 1, l'hippocampe, le fornix, le cortex pariétal, le noyau thalamic laterodorsal et les corps mamillaires; et, au jour 9, le cingulaire antérieur, le cortex retrosplenial et le striatum dorsal. Deux de ces régions cérébrales (celles présentant les plus grands changements à jour 1 et à jour 9: l'hippocampe et le cortex retrosplenial, respectivement) ont été découpées par microdissection au laser et quelques gènes liés au couplage métabolique neurone-glie, au métabolisme du glucose et à la plasticité synaptique ont été analysées par RT-PCR. L'étude 2DG et l'analyse de l'expression de gènes ont été exécutés à trois temps différents: 1) juste après entraînement, 2) 45 minutes et 3) 6 heures après la fin de la tâche. L'objectif principal de cette étude était l'identification des adaptations métaboliques suivant la tâche d'apprentissage. Les résultats de l'expression de gènes démontrent que la tâche d'apprentissage module profondément le profile d'expression des gènes dans le temps, signifiant que ces deux régions cérébrales avec un signal 2DG élevé (l'hippocampe et le cortex retrosplenial) ont adapté leurs « machines moléculaires » en conséquence. Presque tous les gènes étudiés montrent une expression plus élevée dans l'hippocampe au jour 1 comparé au jour 9, alors qu'une expression accrue a été trouvée dans le cortex retrosplenial au jour 9. Nous pouvons observer ces adaptations moléculaires avec un retard court de 45 minutes après la fin de la tâche. Cependant, 6 heures après l'entraînement, une expression de gènes élevée a été trouvée au jour 9 (comparé à jour 1) dans les deux régions, suggérant que seulement un jour d'entraînement ne suffit pas pour détecter des modifications transcriptionelles plusieurs heures après la tâche. Ainsi, les données d'expression de gènes corroborent les résultats 2DG indiquant un transfert d'information dans le temps (de jour 1 à jour 9) et dans l'espace (de l'hippocampe au cortex retrosplenial), et ceci à un niveau cellulaire et moléculaire. D'ailleurs, la tâche d'apprentissage semble modifier le couplage métabolique neurone-glie, puisque de nombreux gènes impliqués dans ce couplage sont induits. Ces observations suggèrent un rôle important de la glie dans les mécanismes de plasticité du système nerveux.

BACKGROUND: The in vivo transfer of naked plasmid DNA into organs such as muscles is commonly used to assess the expression of prophylactic or therapeutic genes in animal disease models. RESULTS: In this study, we devised vectors allowing a tight regulation of transgene expression in mice from such non-viral vectors using a doxycycline-controlled network of activator and repressor proteins. Using these vectors, we demonstrate proper physiological response as consequence of the induced expression of two therapeutically relevant proteins, namely erythropoietin and utrophin. Kinetic studies showed that the induction of transgene expression was only transient, unless epigenetic regulatory elements termed Matrix Attachment Regions, or MAR, were inserted upstream of the regulated promoters. Using episomal plasmid rescue and quantitative PCR assays, we observed that similar amounts of plasmids remained in muscles after electrotransfer with or without MAR elements, but that a significant portion had integrated into the muscle fiber chromosomes. Interestingly, the MAR elements were found to promote plasmid genomic integration but to oppose silencing effects in vivo, thereby mediating long-term expression. CONCLUSIONS: This study thus elucidates some of the determinants of transient or sustained expression from the use of non-viral regulated vectors in vivo.
