A pronounced deficit of nitrogen (N) in the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Arabian Sea suggests the occurrence of heavy N-loss that is commonly attributed to pelagic processes. However, the OMZ water is in direct contact with sediments on three sides of the basin. Contribution from benthic N-loss to the total N-loss in the Arabian Sea remains largely unassessed. In October 2007, we sampled the water column and surface sediments along a transect cross-cutting the Arabian Sea OMZ at the Pakistan continental margin, covering a range of station depths from 360 to 1430 m. Benthic denitrification and anammox rates were determined by using 15N-stable isotope pairing experiments. Intact core incubations showed declining rates of total benthic N-loss with water depth from 0.55 to 0.18 mmol N m**-2 day**-1. While denitrification rates measured in slurry incubations decreased from 2.73 to 1.46 mmol N m**-2 day**-1 with water depth, anammox rates increased from 0.21 to 0.89 mmol N m**-2 day**-1. Hence, the contribution from anammox to total benthic N-loss increased from 7% at 360 m to 40% at 1430 m. This trend is further supported by the quantification of cd1-containing nitrite reductase (nirS), the biomarker functional gene encoding for cytochrome cd1-Nir of microorganisms involved in both N-loss processes. Anammox-like nirS genes within the sediments increased in proportion to total nirS gene copies with water depth. Moreover, phylogenetic analyses of NirS revealed different communities of both denitrifying and anammox bacteria between shallow and deep stations. Together, rate measurement and nirS analyses showed that anammox, determined for the first time in the Arabian Sea sediments, is an important benthic N-loss process at the continental margin off Pakistan, especially in the sediments at deeper water depths. Extrapolation from the measured benthic N-loss to all shelf sediments within the basin suggests that benthic N-loss may be responsible for about half of the overall N-loss in the Arabian Sea.

Seventy-one samples from nine sites were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC). Fifty-six samples, containing 0.2% or more TOC, were evaluated by Rock-Eval to assess the nature of their kerogen and its petroleum source potential. Visual kerogen studies were carried out. Petroleum potential was encountered only in Valanginian calcareous claystones at Hole 692B close to the margin of Dronning Maud Land. A section of 44.7 m was penetrated. The unit possesses a revised mean TOC of 9.8% and petroleum potential of 43.2 kg/Mg, relatively high values in comparison to other Cretaceous anoxic oceanic sections and the totality of petroleum source rocks. At Sites 689 and 690, extremely low TOC levels, mean 0.07%, preclude kerogen analysis. Kerogens in Eocene to Pliocene sediments of the central and western Weddell Sea (Sites 694, 695, 696, and 697) are similar everywhere, largely comprising brown to black, granular, amorphous material of high rank, and generally possessing several reflectance populations of vitrinite particles. The latter are interpreted as indicative of the recycling of sediments of a variety of levels of thermal maturity.

The sediments recovered on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 54 appear to be mixtures of the normal pelagic sediments of the area and hydrothermally produced manganese and iron phases. The latter are mineralogically and chemically very similar to phases recovered from surficial sampling of the mounds. The hydrothermal nontronite which is approximately 15 meters thick in the three holes is essentially free of carbonate or detrital contaminants. The basal sediments are similar to the carbonate oozes presently being deposited in the region, but are enriched in Mn and Fe. This enrichment appears to be the result of hydrothermal deposition that took place at or near the spreading center and may not be associated with the mounds formation. Three different hypotheses for the formation of the nontronite layer and the mounds deposits are considered. An initial deposition of a widespread nontronite layer and subsequent diapiric-like movement of the layer into carbonates could account for the observed stratigraphy; however, if this be correct, analogous deposits should be present in other DSDP sites. The second hypothesis - replacement of the normal sediments by nontronite - may be feasible, but the high purity of the nontronite requires dissolution and removal of refractory elements. The third hypothesis, metal deposition in an advancing oxidation gradient, is compatible with submersible observations of the mounds; however, it can account only for the high purity of the nontronite by very rapid deposition of the hydrothermal phases.

The Prydz Bay area is a key region for studying and understanding the history of the eastern Antarctic Continental Ice Sheet (O'Brien, Cooper, Richter, et al., 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.2001). Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1165 is situated in a water depth of 3357 m on the continental rise offshore from Prydz Bay and lies in front of the outlet for the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system that today drains 22% of East Antarctica. The site was drilled into mixed pelagic and hemipelagic sediments from the southwestern side of the Wild Drift. The drift is an elongate sediment body formed by the interaction of sediment supplied from continental shelf and slope with westward-flowing bottom currents. The sedimentary sequence is characterized by alternations between a generally gray to dark gray facies and a green to greenish gray facies. The greenish facies are structureless diatom-bearing clays with common bioturbation and larger amounts (>15%-20%) of biogenic silica, dispersed clasts, and lonestones than the dark gray facies, which are mostly less bioturbated clay with some silt laminations (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.103.2001). High-quality advanced piston corer and extended core barrel cores containing nearly complete sections of middle Miocene to early Pliocene age allow a detailed characterization of sedimentary cycles and can provide indications for ice advances of the Lambert Glacier system into Prydz Bay, for the extent of sea ice, and for changes in oceanic circulation. The purpose of this work is to provide a data set of coarse-fraction mass percentage (>63, >125, and >250 µm) and biogenic silica content measured on sediments of late Miocene to early Pliocene age drilled at Site 1165. Additionally, high-resolution records of magnetic susceptibility (MS) and gamma ray attenuation (GRA) bulk density are presented. These shipboard data sets were edited postcruise. Furthermore, I provide a high-resolution dry bulk density record that is derived from GRA bulk density and can be used for the calculation of mass accumulation rates. These sedimentological and physical parameters will be used in future work to understand the depositional pattern of alternating biogenic and terrigenous sediments that was observed at Site 1165 (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.188.103.2001).

The radiocarbon contents of various biomarkers extracted from the varve-counted sediments of Saanich Inlet, Canada, were determined to assess their applicability for dating purposes. Calibrated ages obtained from the marine planktonic archaeal biomarker crenarchaeol compared favorably with varve-count ages. The same conclusion could be drawn for a more general archaeal biomarker (GDGT-0), although this biomarker proved to be less reliable due to its less-specific origin. The results also lend support to earlier indications that marine crenarchaeota use dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) as their carbon source. The average reservoir age offset DR of 430 years, determined using the crenarchaeol radiocarbon ages, varied by ±110 years. This may be caused by natural variations in ocean-atmosphere mixing or upwelling at the NE Pacific coast but variability may also be due to an inconsistency in the marine calibration curve when used at sites with high reservoir ages.

Twenty-four piston core sediment samples and 13 sediments and 3 basalts from DSDP Leg 78 Site 543 were analyzed for Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions. The results show sediment with highly radiogenic Pb (206Pb/204Pb up to 19.8) and rather radiogenic Sr and unradiogenic Nd has been deposited in the region since the Cretaceous. The source of this sediment is probably the Archean Guiana Highland, which is drained by the Orinoco River. Pb and Sr isotopic compositions and sediment thickness decrease and 143Nd/144Nd increases northward due to a decrease in turbiditic component. This decrease is partly due to the damming action of basement ridges. Rare earth concentrations in the sediments are somewhat low, due to the abundance of detrital and biogenic components in the sediment and rapid sedimentation rates. Both positive and negative Ce anomalies occur in the surface sediments, but only positive Ce anomalies occur in the Site 543 sediments. It is unlikely that sediment subducted to the source region of Lesser Antilles arc magmas could be the cause of negative Ce anomalies in those magmas. Isotopic compositions of Site 543 basalts show some effect of contamination by seawater-basalt reaction products and sediments. Beyond this, however, they are typical of "normal" depleted MORB.

In this study we investigate benthic phosphorus cycling in recent continental margin sediments at three sites off the Namibian coastal upwelling area. Examination of the sediments reveals that organic and biogenic phosphorus are the major P-containing phases preserved. High Corg/Porg ratios just at the sediment surface suggest that the preferential regeneration of phosphorus relative to that of organic carbon has either already occurred on the suspension load or that the organic matter deposited at these sites is already rather refractory. Release of phosphate in the course of benthic microbial organic matter degradation cannot be identified as the dominating process within the observed internal benthic phosphorus cycle. Dissolved phosphate and iron in the pore water are closely coupled, showing high concentrations below the oxygenated surface layer of the sediments and low concentrations at the sediment-water interface. The abundant presence of Fe(III)-bound phosphorus in the sediments document the co-precipitation of both constituents as P-containing iron (oxyhydr)oxides. However, highly dissolved phosphate concentrations in pore waters cannot be explained, neither by simple mass balance calculations nor by the application of an established computer model. Under the assumption of steady state conditions, phosphate release rates are too high as to be balanced with a solid phase reservoir. This discrepancy points to an apparent lack of solid phase phosphorus at sediment depth were suboxic conditions prevail. We assume that the known, active, fast and episodic particle mixing by burrowing macrobenthic organisms could repeatedly provide the microbially catalyzed processes of iron reduction with authigenic iron (oxyhydro)oxides from the oxic surface sediments. Accordingly, a multiple internal cycling of phosphate and iron would result before both elements are buried below the iron reduction zone.

One hundred and twenty point counts of Oligocene to Recent sands and sandstones from DSDP sites in the Japan and Mariana intraoceanic forearc and backarc basins demonstrate that there is a clear compositional difference between the continentally influenced Japan forearc and backarc sediments, and the totally oceanic Mariana forearc and backarc sediments. Japan forearc sediments average 10 QFL%Q, 0.82 P/F, 2 Framework%Mica, 74 LmLvLst%Lv, and 19 LmLvLst%Lst. In contrast, the Mariana forearc and backarc sediments average 0 QFL%Q, 1.00 P/F, 0 Framework%Mica, 98 LmLvLst%Lv, and 1 LmLvLst%Lst. Sediment compositions in the Japan region are variable. The Honshu forearc sediments average 5 QFL%Q, 0.94 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 82 LmLvLst%Lv, and 15 LmLvLst%Lst. The Yamato Basin sediments (DSDP Site 299) average 13 QFL%Q, 0.70 P/F, 3 Framework%Mica, 78 LmLvLst%Lv, and 14 LmLvLst%Lst. The Japan Basin sediments (DSDP Site 301) average 24 QFL%Q, 0.54 P/F, 9 Framework%Mica, 58 LmLvLst%Lv, and 21 LmLvLst%Lst. P/F and Framework%Mica are higher in the Yamato Basin sediments than in the forearc sediments due to an increase in modal potassium content of volcanic rocks from east to west, on the island of Honshu. Site 301 possesses a higher QFL%Q and LmLvLst%Lst, and lower LmLvLst%Lv than Site 299 because it receives sediment from the Asian mainland as well as the island of Honshu. DSDP Site 293 sediments, in the Mariana region, average 0.97 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 13 LmLvLst%Lm and 83 LmLvLst%Lv, due to their proximity to the island of Luzon. The remaining Mariana forearc and backarc sediments show a uniform composition.

Selective degradation of organic matter in sediments is important for reconstructing past environments and understanding the carbon cycle. Here, we report on compositional changes between and within lipid classes and kerogen types (represented by palynomorph groups) in relation to the organic matter flux to the sea floor and oxidation state of the sediments since the early Holocene for central Eastern Mediterranean site ABC26. This includes the initially oxic but nowadays anoxic presapropelic interval, the still unoxidised lower part of the organic rich S1 sapropel, its postdepositionally oxidised and nowadays organic-poor upper part as well as the overlying postsapropelic sediments which have always been oxic. A general ~ 2.3 times increase in terrestrial and marine input during sapropel formation is estimated on the basis of the total organic carbon (TOC), pollen, spore, dinoflagellate cyst, n-alkane, n-alkanol and n-alkanoic acid concentration changes in the unoxidised part of the sapropel. The long-chain alkenones, 1,15 diols and keto-ols, loliolides and sterols indicate that some plankton groups, notably dinoflagellates, may have increased much more. Apart from the terrestrial and surface water contributions to the sedimentary organic matter, anomalous distributions and preservation of some C23-C27 alkanes, alkanols and alkanoic acids have been observed, which are interpreted as a contribution by organisms living in situ. Comparison of the unoxidised S1 sapropel with the overlying oxidised sapropel and the organic matter concentration profiles in the oxidised postsapropelic sediments demonstrates strong and highly selective aerobic degradation of lipids and palynomorphs. There seems to be a fundamental difference in degradation kinetics between lipids and pollen which may be possibly related with the absence of sorptive preservation as a protective mechanism for palynomorph degradation. The n-alkanes, Impagidinium, and Nematosphaeropsis are clearly more resistant than TOC. The n-alkanols and n-carboxylic acids are about equally resistant whereas the pollen, all other dinoflagellate cysts and other lipids appear to degrade considerably faster, which questions the practice of normalising to TOC without taking diagenesis into account. Selective degradation also modifies the relative distributions within lipid classes, whereby the longer-chain alkanes, alcohols and fatty acids disappear faster than their shorter-chain equivalents. Accordingly, interpretation of lipid and palynomorph assemblages in terms of pre- or syndepositional environmental change should be done carefully when proper knowledge of the postdepositional preservation history is absent. Two lipid-based preservation proxies are tested the diol-keto-ol oxidation index based on the 1,15C30 diol and keto-ols (DOXI) and the alcohol preservation index (API) whereby the former seems to be the most promising.

Sedimentology, mineralogy, and petrology of the pre-Pliocene sediments drilled at ODP Sites 652 and 654 in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Leg 107) have been studied with emphasis on the lower Messinian to pre-Messinian intervals. Messinian at Site 652 is essentially turbiditic and basinal in character; it was deposited during the syn-rift phase in a strongly subsiding half-graben and is correlatable with emerged coeval sequences; in part with the Laga Formation of the foredeep of Apennines, and in part with the filling of grabens dissecting that chain in the Tyrrhenian portion of Tuscany. The sequence found in Site 654 indicates an upper Tortonian to Messinian transgression accompanying crustal stretching in the western Tyrrhenian Sea and is perfectly correlatable with the so-called "Sahelian cycle" and with "postorogenic" cycles recognized in peninsular Italy and in Sicily.

The paper reports data on concentrations of organic compounds (organic carbon, lipids; aliphatic hydrocarbons, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in snow, ice, and sub-ice waters from the mouth of the Severnaya Dvina River in March 2005-2007 and the Kandalaksha Gulf (Chupa Bay) in March 2004. It was established that organic compounds are accumulated in snow and the upper ice layer near Archangelsk city. Distribution of molecular markers indicates that pollutions were mainly caused by local fallouts. In the Chupa Bay organic compounds are concentrated in the lower ice layer; it is typical for Arctic snow-ice cover. High contents of organic compounds in the snow-ice cover of the White Sea are caused by pollution of air and water during the winter season.

Paleomagnetic results from sediments acquired from the continental margin at DSDP Sites 548, 549, 550, and 551 are described. Where possible, the results were used to construct a polarity reversal stratigraphy for the sections sampled, thus enabling the biostratigraphic dating of the sediments to be refined. Several sections in this study were found to be suitable for magnetostratigraphic work, in particular the upper Paleocene to middle Eocene sediments from Site 549, which contained rich faunal assemblages. These sediments are underlain by a thick sequence of Cretaceous sediments that formed during the Long Cretaceous normal polarity interval. Sediments that formed during the later part of this magnetically quiet interval were also recovered at Site 550. Three short reverse polarity intervals were also recovered at this site; they lie directly over basement and are thought to represent a mixed-polarity interval of late Albian age. They may therefore provide important evidence concerning the age of the earliest sediments at this site. In addition, measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and intensity of remanent magnetism proved to be of interest. A significant decrease in the susceptibility and intensity values close to the early/middle Eocene boundary was noted at Sites 548 and 549. This decrease may be correlated with the results from Holes 400A and 401, which were drilled on DSDP Leg 48 in the northeast Bay of Biscay. The decrease may represent an abrupt reduction in the supply of terrigenous material at the end of the early Eocene, reflecting, perhaps, a change in sediment transport processes at that time

The Carnian to Norian sediments, as much as 600 m in total thickness, recovered from ODP Sites 759 and 760 on the Wombat Plateau, are generally represented by fluvial-dominated deltaic successions. In general, the Carnian to Norian sandstones are quartzose. The average ratio of monocrystalline quartz grains, total feldspar grains, and total lithic fragments (i.e., Qm:F:Lt ratio) is 71:22:7. This indicates that they were derived mainly from the transitional continental and cratonic interior provenance terranes, such as the Pilbara Precambrian block to the south of the Wombat Plateau. The upper Carnian sediments, however, are characterized by more feldspathic sandstone petrofacies. They typically contain some volcanic rock fragments with trachytic texture and indicate the onset of the incipient rift-related tectonic movement, such as uplift and subsequent abrupt basin subsidence, together with volcanism in the Gondwana continental block. Mixed siliciclastic and carbonate cycles are typically intercalated in the prodelta to delta front deposits that developed mainly in a lagoon-like, restricted marine environment. The restricted marine environment developed during transgressions as the outflow of shallow water was restricted by depositional barriers. Around the barriers and/or delta lobes, carbonate shoals/banks were probably developed and the allochemical components of the neritic limestones may have been transported into the restricted marine environment by overwash processes and/or storm waves. Siliciclastic detritus, on the other hand, was mainly derived accompanied by delta progradation dominated by fluvial processes in the restricted marine environment. Therefore, we interpret the mixed siliciclastic and carbonate cycles in the deltaic successions to be a result of transgression-regression cycles in a deltaic system during the Late Triassic.

Anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) was characterized in sediment cores from the Blake Ridge collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164. Three independent lines of evidence support the occurrence and scale of AMO at Sites 994 and 995. First, concentration depth profiles of methane from Hole 995B exhibit a region of upward concavity suggestive of methane consumption. Diagenetic modeling of the concentration profile indicates a 1.85-m-thick zone of AMO centered at 21.22 mbsf, with a peak rate of 12.4 nM/d. Second, subsurface maxima in tracer-based sulfate reduction rates from Holes 994B and 995B were observed at depths that coincide with the model-predicted AMO zone. The subsurface zone of sulfate reduction was 2 m thick and had a depth integrated rate that compared favorably to that of AMO (1.3 vs. 1.1 nmol/cm**2/d, respectively). These features suggest close coupling of AMO and sulfate reduction in the Blake Ridge sediments. Third, measured d13CH4 values are lightest at the point of peak model-predicted methane oxidation and become increasingly 13C-enriched with decreasing sediment depth, consistent with kinetic isotope fractionation during bacterially mediated methane oxidation. The isotopic data predict a somewhat (60 cm) shallower maximum depth of methane oxidation than do the model and sulfate reduction data.

Microscopic studies reveal a predominance of terrestrial organic matter in sediments of Site 808. Terrestrial vitrinite and inertinite are more abundant (73% to 100%) than marine organic matter (alginite, 0% to 27%), which increases from open oceanic deposits of the Shikoku Basin sediments to sediments of the outer trench wedge. The abundance of terrestrial organic matter is also reflected through carbon isotope values of -23 per mil to -25.9 per mil. Mass accumulation rates of organic carbon are low in hemipelagic sediments of the Shikoku Basin (<0.2 g/cm**2/k.y.) but increase significantly in sediments of the Nankai Trench (0.2 to 1.7 g/cm**2/k.y.). Although the organic mass accumulation is high in sediments of the Nankai Trench, a comparison of sedimentation rates and total organic carbon suggests relative dilution of organic carbon through turbidite flows. Calculated marine paleoproductivity of organic carbon is low in sediments of the open ocean (Shikoku Basin) and increases closer to the shore (Nankai Trench). Thermal evolution of organic matter is obtained from vitrinite reflectance measurements. Two populations of vitrinites have been observed between 600 and 1234 mbsf. Reflectance values change with increasing depth and temperature in both groups of vitrinite (0.3% to 0.68% in group 1; 0.6% to 1% in group 2).
