Because of the strict laws against marketing of tobacco products in Sweden, we believe that the stores are an interesting way of approaching a new branding and communication strategy in the tobacco industry.  Research questions: What´s the background to the launch of Swedish Match Stores? What´s the stores impact on Swedish Match image? How do Swedish Match Stores impact the cultural status of snus? In what ways do the cultural trends impact the snus market?  Theory: In this study we have applied theories concerning culture, communication, branding, PR and advertisement. Methodology: We have chosen to apply a qualitative method on this research. The method consists of three different methods: one focus group, one observation study which consists of two different observations both in the Gothenburg store and the store in Stockholm, the last method is an online interview with the public relations officer of Swedish Match in Sweden. Because of the chosen method´s we hope to bring three different perspectives to the  study: From the customers perspective, from our own perspective and finally from the company´s perspective.  Findings: Through this research we discovered that the stores do not only work as a communication strategy for Swedish Match. The store as a phenomenon also works in the aspect of branding, PR and also gives a higher cultural status to snus. Through our own observation and the focus group we came to the conclusion that the stores in terms of image of Swedish Match implements a cultural aspect of swedishness to the company, as well as a more modern and new take on snus. We also came to the conclusion that snus is a cultural phenomenon that is impacted of other contemporary trends, such as gastronomic trends and the increased popularity of small scale exclusivity.

Managing woodlands for income maximisation in western Queensland, Australia: clearing for grazing versus timber production

Queensland, Australia, has a proud pastoral history; however, the private and social benefits of continued woodland clearing for pasture development are unlikely to be as pronounced as they had been in the past. The environmental benefits of tree retention in and regions of the State are now better appreciated and market opportunities have arisen for the unique timbers of western Queensland. A financial model is developed to facilitate a comparison of the private profitability of small-scale timber production from remnant Acacia woodlands against clearing for pasture development in the Mulga Lands and Desert Uplands bioregions of western Queensland. Four small-scale timber production scenarios, which differ in target markets and the extent of processing (value-adding), are explored within the model. Each scenario is examined for the cases where property rights to the timber are vested with the timber processor, and where royalties are payable. For both cases of resource ownership, at least one scenario generates positive returns from timber production, and exceeds the net farm income per hectare for an average grazing property in the study regions over the period 1989-1990 to 2000-2001. The net present value per hectare of selectively harvesting and processing high-value clearwood from remnant western Queensland woodlands is found to be greater than clearing for grazing. Modelling comminution patterns within a pilot scale AG/SAG mill

The patterns of rock comminution within tumbling mills, as well as the nature of forces, are of significant practical importance. Discrete element modelling (DEM) has been used to analyse the pattern of specific energy applied to rock, in terms of spatial distribution within a pilot AG/SAG mill. We also analysed in some detail the nature of the forces, which may result in rock comminution. In order to examine the distribution of energy applied within the mill, the DEM models were compared with measured particle mass losses, in small scale AG and SAG mill experiments. The intensity of contact stresses was estimated using the Hertz theory of elastic contacts. The results indicate that in the case of the AG mill, the highest intensity stresses and strains are likely to occur deep within the charge, and close to the base. This effect is probably more pronounced for large AG mills. In the SAG mill case, the impacts of the steel balls on the surface of the charge are likely to be the most potent. In both cases, the spatial pattern of medium-to-high energy collisions is affected by the rotational speed of the mill. Based on an assumed damage threshold for rock, in terms of specific energy introduced per single collision, the spatial pattern of productive collisions within each charge was estimated and compared with rates of mass loss. We also investigated the nature of the comminution process within AG vs. SAG mill, in order to explain the observed differences in energy utilisation efficiency, between two types of milling. All experiments were performed using a laboratory scale mill of 1.19 m diameter and 0.31 m length, equipped with 14 square section lifters of height 40 mm. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
