Resumen: Después de la primera sofística, los sofistas actuaron entre el resto de los pensadores del Mediterráneo como un grupo definido. Dado que hay muchos ejemplos que muestran que los sofistas ejercían sus prácticas y que también eran personas comprometidas en otras actividades, vamos a examinar aquí diversos casos de semejanzas y diferencias entre ellos y otros grupos de pensadores. Nuestras tres preguntas fundamentales son: qué, cómo y por qué los sofistas escribían y enseñaban. Intentaremos responder haciendo un análisis diacrónico de las principales formas y géneros de escritura que produjeron (qué). El cómo lo responderemos en su desenvolvimiento como una actividad comunicativa más allá de las fronteras de las disciplinas de la época. El por qué tendrá su respuesta al enfatizar la necesidad de la actividad de los sofistas en la socialización de la época y en la educación de la antigüedad. Al aseverar que el estilo era la idea de los sofistas, ponemos la noción de idea en Platón en el contexto de idea derivado de los sofistas contemporáneos a él y de los sofistas posteriores (segunda sofística) y centramos el foco en la función de visualidad expresada en su concepto de idea desde las obras sofísticas más tempranas en la época de Platón hasta las contribuciones posteriores.

Executive Summary: Baseline characterization of resources is an essential part of marine protected area (MPA) management and is critical to inform adaptive management. Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) currently lacks adequate characterization of several key resources as identified in the 2006 Final Management Plan. The objectives of this characterization were to fulfill this need by characterizing the bottom fish, benthic features, marine debris, and the relationships among them for the different bottom types within the sanctuary: ledges, sparse live bottom, rippled sand, and flat sand. Particular attention was given to characterizing the different ledge types, their fish communities, and the marine debris associated with them given the importance of this bottom type to the sanctuary. The characterization has been divided into four sections. Section 1 provides a brief overview of the project, its relevance to sanctuary needs, methods of site selection, and general field procedures. Section 2 provides the survey methods, results, discussion, and recommendations for monitoring specific to the benthic characterization. Section 3 describes the characterization of marine debris. Section 4 is specific to the characterization of bottom fish. Field surveys were conducted during August 2004, May 2005, and August 2005. A total of 179 surveys were completed over ledge bottom (n=92), sparse live bottom (n=51), flat sand (n=20), and rippled sand (n=16). There were three components to each field survey: fish counting, benthic assessment, and quantification of marine debris. All components occurred within a 25 x 4 m belt transect. Two divers performed the transect at each survey site. One diver was responsible for identification of fish species, size, and abundance using a visual survey. The second diver was responsible for characterization of benthic features using five randomly placed 1 m2 quadrats, measuring ledge height and other benthic structures, and quantifying marine debris within the entire transect. GRNMS is composed of four main bottom types: flat sand, rippled sand, sparsely colonized live bottom, and densely colonized live bottom (ledges). Independent evaluation of the thematic accuracy of the GRNMS benthic map produced by Kendall et al. (2005) revealed high overall accuracy (93%). Most discrepancies between map and diver classification occurred during August 2004 and likely can be attributed to several factors, including actual map or diver errors, and changes in the bottom type due to physical forces. The four bottom types have distinct physical and biological characteristics. Flat and rippled sand bottom types were composed primarily of sand substrate and secondarily shell rubble. Flat sand and rippled sand bottom types were characterized by low percent cover (0-2%) of benthic organisms at all sites. Although the sand bottom types were largely devoid of epifauna, numerous burrows indicate the presence of infaunal organisms. Sparse live bottom and ledges were colonized by macroalgae and numerous invertebrates, including coral, gorgonians, sponges, and “other” benthic species (such as tunicates, anemones, and bryozoans). Ledges and sparse live bottom were similar in terms of diversity (H’) given the level of classification used here. However, percent cover of benthic species, with the exception of gorgonians, was significantly greater on ledge than on sparse live bottom. Percent biotic cover at sparse live bottom ranged from 0.7-26.3%, but was greater than 10% at only 7 out of 51 sites. Colonization on sparse live bottom is likely inhibited by shifting sands, as most sites were covered in a layer of sediment up to several centimeters thick. On ledge bottom type, percent cover ranged from 0.42-100%, with the highest percent cover at ledges in the central and south-central region of GRNMS. Biotic cover on ledges is influenced by local ledge characteristics. Cluster analysis of ledge dimensions (total height, undercut height, undercut width) resulted in three main categories of ledges, which were classified as short, medium, and tall. Median total percent cover was 97.6%, 75.1%, and 17.7% on tall, medium, and short ledges, respectively. Total percent cover and cover of macroalgae, sponges, and other organisms was significantly lower on short ledges compared to medium and tall ledges, but did not vary significantly between medium and tall ledges. Like sparse live bottom, short ledges may be susceptible to burial by sand, however the results indicate that ledge height may only be important to a certain threshold. There are likely other factors not considered here that also influence spatial distribution and community structure (e.g., small scale complexity, ocean currents, differential settlement patterns, and biological interactions). GRNMS is a popular site for recreational fishing and boating, and there has been increased concern about the accumulation of debris in the sanctuary and potential effects on sanctuary resources. Understanding the types, abundance, and distribution of debris is essential to improving debris removal and education efforts. Approximately two-thirds of all observed debris items found during the field surveys were fishing gear, and about half of the fishing related debris was monofilament fishing line. Other fishing related debris included leaders and spear gun parts, and non-gear debris included cans, bottles, and rope. The spatial distribution of debris was concentrated in the center of the sanctuary and was most frequently associated with ledges rather than at other bottom types. Several factors may contribute to this observation. Ledges are often targeted by fishermen due to the association of recreationally important fish species with this bottom type. In addition, ledges are structurally complex and are often densely colonized by biota, providing numerous places for debris to become stuck or entangled. Analysis of observed boat locations indicated that higher boat activity, which is an indication of fishing, occurs in the center of the sanctuary. On ledges, the presence and abundance of debris was significantly related to observed boat density and physiographic features including ledge height, ledge area, and percent cover. While it is likely that most fishing related debris originates from boats inside the sanctuary, preliminary investigation of ocean current data indicate that currents may influence the distribution and local retention of more mobile items. Fish communities at GRNMS are closely linked to benthic habitats. A list of species encountered, probability of occurrence, abundance, and biomass by habitat is provided. Species richness, diversity, composition, abundance, and biomass of fish all showed striking differences depending on bottom type with ledges showing the highest values of nearly all metrics. Species membership was distinctly separated by bottom type as well, although very short, sparsely colonized ledges often had a similar community composition to that of sparse live bottom. Analysis of fish communities at ledges alone indicated that species richness and total abundance of fish were positively related to total percent cover of sessile invertebrates and ledge height. Either ledge attribute was sufficient to result in high abundance or species richness of fish. Fish diversity (H`) was negatively correlated with undercut height due to schools of fish species that utilize ledge undercuts such as Pareques species. Concurrent analysis of ledge types and fish communities indicated that there are five distinct combinations of ledge type and species assemblage. These include, 1) short ledges with little or no undercut that lacked many of the undercut associated species except Urophycis earlii ; 2) tall, heavily colonized, deeply undercut ledges typically with Archosargus probatocephalus, Mycteroperca sp., and Pareques sp.; 3) tall, heavily colonized but less undercut with high occurrence of Lagodon rhomboides and Balistes capriscus; 4) short, heavily colonized ledges typically with Centropristis ocyurus, Halichoeres caudalis, and Stenotomus sp.; and 5) tall, heavily colonized, less undercut typically with Archosargus probatocephalus, Caranx crysos and Seriola sp.. Higher levels of boating activity and presumably fishing pressure did not appear to influence species composition or abundance at the community level although individual species appeared affected. These results indicate that merely knowing the basic characteristics of a ledge such as total height, undercut width, and percent cover of sessile invertebrates would allow good prediction of not only species richness and abundance of fish but also which particular fish species assemblages are likely to occur there. Comparisons with prior studies indicate some major changes in the fish community at GRNMS over the last two decades although the causes of the changes are unknown. Species of interest to recreational fishermen including Centropristis striata, Mycteroperca microlepis, and Mycteroperca phenax were examined in relation to bottom features, areas of assumed high versus low fishing pressure, and spatial dispersion. Both Mycteroperca species were found more frequently when undercut height of ledges was taller. They often were found together in small mixed species groups at ledges in the north central and southwest central regions of the sanctuary. Both had lower mode size and proportion of fish above the fishery size limit in heavily fished areas of the sanctuary (i.e. high boat density) despite the presence of better habitat in that region. Black sea bass, C. striata, occurred at 98% of the ledges surveyed and appeared to be evenly distributed throughout the sanctuary. Abundance was best explained by a positive relationship with percent cover of sessile biota but was also negatively related to presence of either Mycteroperca species. This may be due to predation by the Mycteroperca species or avoidance of sites where they are present by C. striata. Suggestions for monitoring bottom features, marine debris, and bottom fish at GRNMS are provided at the end of each chapter. The present assessment has established quantitative baseline characteristics of many of the key resources and use issues at GRNMS. The methods can be used as a model for future assessments to track the trajectory of GRNMS resources. Belt transects are ideally suited to providing efficient and quantitative assessment of bottom features, debris, and fish at GRNMS. The limited visibility, sensitivity of sessile biota, and linear nature of ledge habitats greatly diminish the utility of other sampling techniques. Ledges should receive the bulk of future characterization effort due to their importance to the sanctuary and high variability in physical structure, benthic composition, and fish assemblages. Detailed descriptions of the early development of the striped bass, Roccus saxitilis (Walbaum), with emphasis on variation in size and morphology, sequence of fin formation, changes in body form, and attainment of the full complement of maristic numbers, are presented and illustrated for the first time. The egg is spherical, transparent, non-adhesive and relatively large. It is pelagic and buoyant, although it sinks in quiet fresh water. When unfertilized, it averages 1.3 mm, in diameter, but is 3.4 mm. when fertilized and water-hardened. The granular yolk sac, green when alive and whitish-yellow when preserved, averages 1.2 mm., and the single amber-colored oil globule is about 0.6 mm. in diameter. Newly hatched striped bass prolarvae, which range from 2.9-3.7 mm. in total length, are relatively undeveloped and nearly transparent, with no mouth opening, unpigmented eyes, and a greatly enlarged yolk sac with the large oil globule projecting beyond the head. When 5-6 mm. long the yolk sac and oil globule are assimilated and the postlarvae I show advanced development of the internal anatomy. Although the fish is still transparent, scattered melanophores are found on the head and body and chromatophores in the eyes and the ventro-posterior edge of the body. Postlarvae transform to young between 7 and 10 mm. in length when the finfolds are lost except in the dorsal, anal and caudal regions. The largest fish in this group possess a well-formed skeleton with a full complement of 25 vertebrae. Between 10 and 20 mm. in length all fish are fully transformed, muscular tissue renders most of the internal structure obscure, and the myotomes, which generally correspond in number with the vertebrae, are no longer visible. At fish lengths of 20-30 mm. scales are found on all specimens, and with the exception of the pectoral fin-rays, a full complement of meristic structures is present in all other fins. At this stage the body is pigmented uniformly with small spots. Linear regressions between several dependent variables and the , independent variable of standard length indicate that the rate of development of head, eye. and snout to anus lengths is proportional to the length of the larvae and young. Body depth and standard length are non-linear among newly-hatched larvae. Hatchery-reared striped bass demonstrated a slow rate of growth, and were regarded as "stunted," when compared to growth rates observed in another study and field collections. Observations were also made on abnormal eggs and teratological larvae and young. Blue-sac disease is tentatively identified and described for the first time in larvae and pugnosed larvae and young are also described for the first time in striped bass.

El congreso, que se celebra en el marco de los XXXIV Cursos de Verano de la UPV/EHU, aborda en esta cuarta edición el tema “Ciudades en riesgo: resiliencia y redundancia”. Alrededor de este tema general se desarrollan cinco ponencias magistrales, a cargo de Margaretha Breil (Centro Euro-Mediterráneo para el Cambio Climático), Cristina Garzillo Leemhuis (ICLEI), Ignasi Fontanals (OptiCits), Juan Carlos Barrios Montenegro (Global Action Plan) y Manuel Valdés López (Ajuntament de Barcelona). O estudo investiga as dinâmicas que orientam as interações entre homossexuais e bissexuais femininas no ambiente escolar, analisando no âmbito da escola aspectos de vulnerabilidade e de potencialidades das ações educativas relacionadas à homossexualidade humana, em especial, a lesbianidade. A metodologia utilizada nesta pesquisa é de caráter qualitativo e tem como procedimento metodológico a realização de grupos focais com educandas de turmas do ensino médio do curso de formação de professores do ensino público. Foram realizados três grupos focais com a participação de vinte e uma adolescentes do sexo feminino e, desses grupos, foram analisados os relatos das sete jovens com experiências de vida mais significativas para as temáticas de interesse deste estudo. Conclui-se que há uma grande resistência por parte de educadores em discutir as questões da sexualidade com seus alunos, assim como por parte dos pais com relação a seus filhos. As jovens mencionaram vivenciar freqüentemente experiências de discriminação pelo fato de serem homoafetivas. É possível compreender este fenômeno a luz do preconceito e do machismo existentes nas sociedades heteronormativas que finda por dificultar o diálogo quando se pretende tratar das questões voltadas às diferentes orientações sexuais na família e no ambiente escolar.

Nesta tese discuto até que ponto a educação literária de crianças e adolescentes pode ajudar a diminuir os diversos tipos de preconceito e discriminação em relação aos variados estigmas sociais, que marcam determinados indivíduos como diferentes. Faço um recorte específico na questão da orientação sexual, pois considero que a mesma é especialmente delicada, por uma série de especificidades. O sexo sempre foi um aspecto privilegiado na questão do controle social. A manutenção do sexo dentro do que a sociedade considera como normalidade (heterossexualidade) garante o status quo do qual a mesma não deseja abrir mão. Demonstro que, pelo motivo citado, a escola, que é responsável por uma parte importante da formação de crianças e jovens, prefere manter-se indiferente diante de tal questão, contribuindo, assim, para a manutenção de todos os preconceitos. Discuto ainda as infinitas possibilidades que o ensino da literatura apresenta para tal discussão, concluindo que tal ensino não apenas pode como deve ser aproveitado para ajudar no processo de formação de seres críticos, pensantes e, principalmente, solidários

Minha tese teve como base a busca de imagens de mulheres negras, para tentar contar uma história, aquela que aparece em álbuns e histórias para jovens e crianças. Essas imagens me indicam possibilidades para a aplicação da Lei n 10.639/3. Nesses espaçostempos tão plurais, repletos de cores, identidades e significados podemos trabalhar de uma maneira simples seguindo um currículo único? A tese principal da minha pesquisa é buscar entender a importância dessas publicações que crescem significativamente em nosso país, nos últimos anos, em práticas curriculares possíveis. Esse aumento de produções de álbuns, conjugado a uma forte vertente editorial visando à publicação de literatura que resgata a história da África, reforçado por uma linha voltada para o público infanto-juvenil se relaciona à expansão de ações de movimentos sociais, relacionados à igualdade social de negros. Tudo isto reforçou a necessidade de um comprometimento governamental, através de leis, decretos e reformas educacionais. Desse modo pesquisei, utilizando esse material, buscando compreender sua importância para a discussão da questão da educação étnico-cultural e racial e na desconstrução social do preconceito e da discriminação racial direcionados à população negra. Nossa base teórica se encontra em Stuart Hall, Franz Fanon, Kabenguele Munanga, Nilma Gomes, Raul Lody, Nilda Alves, Michel de Certeau, Boris Kossoy, Arlindo Machado, Armando Silva, entre outros tantos.

Este estudo propõe uma reflexão acerca do cuidado de enfermagem e suas práticas voltadas à pessoa com HIV/Aids desenvolvido por profissionais da equipe de enfermagem. O objetivo geral foi analisar as representações sociais e as práticas de cuidado de enfermagem a pessoa com HIV/Aids para a equipe de enfermagem que atua no Programa de DST/Aids no Município do Rio de Janeiro. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, fundamentada na Teoria das Representações Sociais. Quanto à metodologia este estudo foi desenvolvido com 16 unidades de saúde inseridas no Programa Nacional de DST-Aids do Ministério da Saúde, que prestam assistência a pessoas que vivem com HIV/Aids em nível ambulatorial. Participaram desse estudo 37 profissionais, sendo 20 enfermeiros e 17 técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista semiestruturada, tendo sido analisadas através da utilização do software ALCESTE 4.10; e questionário de identificação sócio-profissional, cuja análise de dados foi realizada com estatística descritiva. A partir da análise ALCESTE foram definidas 7 classes, divididas em dois blocos temáticos, sendo o primeiro denominado O HIV/Aids e seus impactos sociais através do olhar da equipe de enfermagem. Este bloco abarcou 3 classes, sendo elas: Preconceito e vulnerabilidade no cotidiano do cuidado de enfermagem de pessoas atingidas pelo HIV/Aids (classe1); As relações familiares e o envolvimento com o HIV/Aids (classe 4) e Memórias sócio profissionais sobre o HIV/Aids (classe 7). O segundo bloco temático denomina-se O HIV/Aids e as práticas de cuidado, e abarca 4 classes da análise, denominadas: A complexidade do atendimento ambulatorial da pessoa com HIV/Aids (classe 2); As práticas de cuidado da equipe de enfermagem e da equipe multiprofissional (classe 3); A educação em saúde como prática do cuidado de enfermagem (classe 5) e Medidas de proteção e biossegurança dos profissionais de enfermagem (classe 6). No primeiro bloco observa-se as representações da doença, os estigmas enfrentados pela pessoa com HIV/Aids, as relações com familiares e profissionais de saúde e as memórias da equipe de enfermagem com relação a doença. Observa-se que mesmo após ter havido mudanças no perfil da doença, as marcas do passado ainda se fazem presentes no cotidiano desses sujeitos, o que se reflete no cuidado de enfermagem, nas relações familiares e na vida em sociedade. O segundo bloco descreve as práticas institucionais e profissionais de cuidado à pessoa com HIV/Aids, observando-se o destaque da autoproteção no cuidado de enfermagem aos sujeitos com HIV/Aids. Também são destacados elementos como o cuidado do outro, tais como o vínculo, a postura acolhedora, o apoio psicológico e o relacionamento interpessoal, que são modalidades reconhecidas como participantes das práticas de cuidado, assim como a educação em saúde. Conclui-se que os diversos conteúdos que compõem as representações sociais e as práticas de cuidado de enfermagem a pessoa com HIV/Aids se apresentam sentimentos, práticas, atitudes, memórias, conceitos e imagens atuais e antigas, com a presença do cuidado instrumental, mas também do cuidado relacional.

The Zhoushan fishing area contains the Zhoushan archipelagos, whose population is nearly 1 million, including over 300,000 fishermen. A detailed account is given of the environment and its resources; there are more than 300 species of fish, over 60 species of shrimp, more than 10 species of crab and more than 50 species of algae in the area. The history of fishery development in the area is described, outlining motorization, technology, and education. Various regulations and management activities, implemented in the 1980s, are highlighted.

A pesquisa que se insere na linha Infância, Juventude e Educação do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação, da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro/UERJ, teve por objetivo compreender as enunciações que professoras e estudantes de Pedagogia produziram nas discussões do Ciclo de Palestras Direitos Humanos e Educação Infantil: questões de raça, etnia, sexo e gênero, realizado na UERJ, durante cinco encontros quinzenais, sobre a questão raça e etnia, em 2013. O procedimento metodológico do Ciclo foi de palestras expositivas, sessões reflexivas que produziram amplo debate crítico com os 40 participantes. O material empírico analisado na dissertação foi composto pelas enunciações produzidas pelos participantes relativas às questões étnico-raciais: relatos de preconceito, discriminação e racismo. A pesquisa adotou uma abordagem qualitativa e procurou compreender as enunciações a partir do aporte teórico proposto por Bakhtin. Esta abordagem teórica dialogou com outras que subsidiaram o ciclo de palestras e as presentes no levantamento bibliográfico realizado (2003 2013), que visou observar a materialidade da Lei 10.639/13 e das DCNERER. A partir do corpus de enunciações da pesquisa elegemos três eixos temáticos: (1) As relações étnico-raciais no Brasil; (2) Práticas racistas e antirracistas na Educação Infantil e (3) A formação de professores para a educação das relações étnico-raciais. As análises apontaram que as atividades de problematização e discussão sobre o tema são importantes e necessárias, diante à lacuna de formação e conhecimentos especializados, em contraponto às dificuldades cotidianas e embaraços voltados às questões de raça e etnia vividas por professores e crianças negras ou não, no cotidiano das Instituições de Educação Infantil. Os participantes reconheceram o próprio despreparo para atuar frente às questões em estudo e propuseram estratégias de ação nas suas práticas pedagógicas com as crianças

Orientado pelo debate sobre a diferença, o presente estudo analisa questões de gênero e sexualidade relativas ao processo de constituição do currículo de Educação em Direitos Humanos, procurando identificar que significados deslizam, disputam hegemonia e ganham espaço e/ou são silenciados em textos voltados à Educação Básica, autodefinidos como relativos à Educação em Direitos Humanos reunidos em acervo pedagógico produzido pelo Núcleo de Educação Continuada (NEC). O NEC é um projeto de extensão da Faculdade de Educação da Baixada Fluminense, da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, que atua há 15 anos com a proposta de articular ações de extensão, pesquisa e ensino com a temática dos direitos humanos, desenvolvendo projetos escolares em parceria com o poder público e instituições da sociedade civil. Este estudo se insere em uma abordagem pós-estruturalista, assumindo como referencial teórico as contribuições dos Estudos Culturais e Pós-Coloniais. Nele, o conceito de discurso desenvolvido por Chantal Mouffe e Ernesto Laclau (2000, 2004) é utilizado como categoria de análise para investigar a diferença como processo de produção discursiva e, na perspectiva da Educação em Direitos Humanos, discutir com base em Aura Helena Ramos (2011) a Educação em Direitos Humanos como eixo articulador da diferença. Apoia-se em Elizabeth Macedo (2007, 2011) para analisar o currículo como produção cultural e em Guacira Louro (2002, 2010) para pensar as questões relativas a gênero e sexualidade na Educação. As análises e conclusões, sempre provisórias e contingentes, indicam que o discurso dos textos curriculares que compõem o material empírico do estudo permite identificar a atenção em relação às diferenças de gênero e a invisibilização das diferenças em relação ao tema sexualidade, silenciamento que produz e sustenta o preconceito contra as homossexualidades.

The recent developments in nanotechnology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on its application in microsystem technology where increased reliability is achieved by integrating the sensor and the readout electronics on the same substrate. New applications may be possible using integrated micromechanical clips to connect optic fibers and components in integrated silicon systems. Some of the key developments in enabling technologies are also described, including the control of thin film deposition, nanostructuring to tailor the properties of thin film, silicon micromachining to make sensors, and microclips for the low-cost assembly of integrated optical microsystems.

The study is prompted by the poverty that persisted among the fishing communities of lake victoria at time of considerable cash inflow into the fisheries development of fish processing industry. There has been need for understanding of the poverty and what strategies would be most appreciate for it's reduction.This study has attempted to respond to the needby identifying the nature and distribution of the poverty within the fisheries lake victoria,Uganda, the factor responsible for itand the options for poverty reduction intervention. The study examined the global and regional perspectives of poverty and wealth distribution, noting that wide disparities existed between the developed and the developing world and also between the developing countries themselves. A historical review of development policies and strategies revealed that while successive strategies were able to contribute to growth, their achievement towards poverty alleviation were less than satisfactory, hence the need for continually developing new strategies. A background to Uganda’s society and economy is provided, examining the demographic, political, environmental and economic conditions of the country. Uganda’s development strategies are reviewed, highlighting the role of the Poverty Eradication Action Plan, Uganda’s main strategy for implementing the policy of poverty reduction and wealth distribution. At the agricultural sector level, the Plan for the Modernisation of Agriculture has been formulated, followed by the National Fisheries Policy, aimed at providing a policy framework for the management and development of the fisheries. An appropriate definition of poverty was formulated, considered relevant to the situation of Lake Victoria. The dimensions of poverty included inadequate basic necessities, low education and health achievements, a sense of insecurity and exposure to risk. The research methodology was enhanced by the examination of the Lélé Model of the Poverty–Environmental Degradation problem, the World Bank Model of Poverty Causation and the subsequent Lake Victoria Model developed in this study. It has provided a plan for the research, the consideration of criteria and a data collection plan. The data collection instruments included secondary data search, key informant interviews and a sample survey based on a structured questionnaire. The study identified all the four dimensions of poverty in the fisheries, provided poverty profiles with respect to the different activities, groups of people and regions in the fisheries, based on consumption poverty. Among the people identified to be in poverty were the fishing labourers, fishers of Oreochromis niloticus and those operating with non-powered boats. In the post-harvest fisheries, large proportions of processors involved in salting and sun-drying, market stall and bicycle traders were in the poverty category. The ethnic groups most affected included the Samia, Basoga and Bakenye while the Districts of Jinja, Bugiri and Busia had the highest proportions of fishers in the poverty category. With respect to the other dimensions of poverty, the study showed that educational achievement was low within the fishing communities. The health status was poor, due mainly to the prevalence of malaria, diarrhoea, bilharzia and HIV/AIDS. There was a sense of insecurity within certain sections of the fishing community, due to leadership weaknesses within the local as well as the Government institutions. Some community members operated in a state of risk because they were vulnerable to episodes of income, health and education. The causes of poverty in fisheries included weaknesses within the institutional and social environment, limitations in the technology available to the poor, resource degradation and unfavourable economic factors. The recommendations of the study for poverty reduction included strengthening of policies, developing links, improving capacities and increasing resources, to be applied at the levels of Central Government, Local Government and of the community. In view of the achievements of the methodology used on this study, involving reference to the models, it is recommended that future research should build upon this model approach, as it will continue to produce results, especially when attempting to forecast changes relating to interventions.

The evolutionary process of converting low-lying paddy fields into fish farms and its impact on agrarian communities in some selected areas of Mymensingh district were studied. This study was conducted through participatory rural appraisal (PRA) covering 12 villages from each of selected upazillas viz. Fulpur and Haluaghat of Mymensing [sic] district. A total of 12 PRA sessions were conducted where 90 farmers participated during 29 July to 26 August 2004. It is seen that the use of low-lying paddy fields was mostly confined to Broadcast Aman (B. Aman) rice production until 1960s. With the introduction of modern rice farming technology, the farmers started to produce Boro rice in Rabi season and B. Aman rice in Kharif season. With the passage of time, aquaculture technologies have been evolved and the farmers realized that fish farming is more profitable than rice cultivation, and then they started to utilize their paddy fields for alternate rice-fish farming and rice-cum-fish farming. Now a days, aquaculture based crop production system is in practice in more than 25% of the low-lying paddy fields. Conversion of rice fields in to fish ponds has brought up a change in the livelihood patterns of the rural farmers. The areas where the farmers involved themselves in the new production systems were fingerling collection, transportation and marketing of fry and fingerlings. During 1960s to 1970s, a few people used to culture fish in the permanent ponds for their own consumption, the species produced were rohu, catla, mrigal, ghainna, long whiskered catfish, freshwater shark (boal), snake head (shol) etc. Small fishes like climbing perch, stinging catfish, walking catfish, barb, minnows etc. were available in the rice fields during monsoon season. In 1980s to mid 1990s, some rice fields were converted into fish ponds and the people started to produce fish for commercial purposes. When rice-fish farming became profitable, a large number of people started converting their rice fields in to rice-fish culture ponds. Culture of some exotic fishes like silver carp, tilapia, grass carp, silver barb etc. also started in the paddy fields. Higher income from fish farming contributed positively in improving the housing, sanitation and education system in the study areas. It is seen that the medium and medium high lands were only used for alternate rice fish farming. The net income was high in any fish based cropping system that motivated the farmers to introduce fish based cropping system in the low-lying inland areas. As a result, the regional as well as communal income disparities occurred. However, the extraction of ground water became common during the dry period as the water was used for both rice and fish farming. Mass conversion of paddy fields into rice-fish culture ponds caused water logging in the study areas. In most cases, the participated farmers mentioned that they could be easily benefited by producing fish with T. Aman or only fish during the monsoon season. They agreed that this was an impressive technology to them and they could generate employment opportunities throughout the year. Finally, the social, economic and technical problems which are acting as constraints to rapid expansion of fish production system were reported from the interviewee.
