Instability of the steady-state regime of generation in laser diodes with a broad gain spectrum

The laser-diode parameters at which the steady-state regime of generation becomes unstable are analyzed within the framework of the mode-locking model. The crucial role of the transverse inhomogeneity of the field, pumping intensity, and spectrum width in developing the instabilities of the steady-state regime of generation is demonstrated. The calculated values of the instability threshold are shown to be consistent with the experimental results. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

Superfluorescence in semiconductor lasers

An analysis is made of the conditions for the generation of superfluorescence pulses in an inverted medium of electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor. It is shown that strong optical amplification in laser semiconductor amplifiers characterised by αL ≫ 1 leads to suppression of phase re-laxation of the medium during the initial stages of evolution of superfluorescence and to formation of a macroscopic dipole from electron-hole pairs. Cooperative emission of radiation in this system results in generation of a powerful ultrashort pulse of the optical gain, which interacts coherently with the semiconductor medium. It is shown that coherent pulsations of the optical field, observed earlier by the author in Q-switched semiconductor lasers, are the result of superfluorescence and of the coherent interaction between the optical field and the medium.

Design and testing of a medium-speed 250 kW Brushless DFIG

This paper presents the design and testing of a 250 kW medium-speed Brushless Doubly-Fed Generator (Brushless DFIG), and its associated power electronics and control systems. The experimental tests confirm the design, and show the system's steady-state and dynamic performance. The medium-speed Brushless DFIG in combination with a simplified twostage gearbox promises a low-cost low-maintenance and reliable drive train for wind turbine applications.

The front-end of eco-innovation for eco-innovative small and medium sized companies

This paper studies the Front End of Eco-Innovation (FEEI), the initial phase of the eco-innovation process. Incorporating environmental concerns at the front-end of innovation is important, as product parameters are still flexible. This paper investigates the FEEI for 42 small and medium sized eco-innovators in the Netherlands by using a survey. The results show that SMEs embrace informal, systematic, and open innovation approaches at the FEEI. Teams appear to be multidisciplinary, and creativity and environmental knowledge are essential. Experimentation played a significant role at the FEEI. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and implications for managers. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Design and performance analysis of a 6 MW medium-speed Brushless DFIG

The paper presents the design and performance analysis of a 6 MW medium-speed Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generation (Brushless DFIG) for a wind turbine drivetrain. Two machines with different frame sizes have been designed to show the flexibility of the design procedure. The mediumspeed Brushless DFIG in combination with a two stage gearbox offers a low-cost, low-maintenance and reliable drivetrain for wind turbine applications.

INFORMATION VISUALIZATION TO SUPPORT MANAGEMENT DECISIONS

Information visualization can accelerate perception, provide insight and control, and harness this flood of valuable data to gain a competitive advantage in making business decisions. Although such a statement seems to be obvious, there is a lack in the literature of practical evidence of the benefit of information visualization. The main contribution of this paper is to illustrate how, for a major European apparel retailer, the visualization of performance information plays a critical role in improving business decisions and in extracting insights from Redio Frequency Idetification (RFID)-based performance measures. In this paper, we identify - based on a literature review - three fundamental managerial functions of information visualization, namely as: a communication medium, a knowledge management means, and a decision-support instrument. Then, we provide - based on real industrial case evidence - how information visualization supports business decision-making. Several examples are provided to evidence the benefit of information visualization through its three identified managerial functions. We find that - depending on the way performance information is shaped, communicated, and made interactive - it not only helps decision making, but also offers a means of knowledge creation, as well as an appropriate communication channel. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Sonar gain control in echolocating finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) in an open water (L)

Source levels of echolocating free-ranging Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) were calculated using a range estimated by measuring the time delays of the signals via the surface and bottom reflection paths to the hydrophone, relative to the direct signal. Peak-to-peak source levels for finless porpoise were from 163.7 to 185.6 dB re:1 mu Pa. The source levels are highly range dependent and varied approximately as a function of the one-way transmission loss for signals traveling from the animals to the hydrophone.
