This work reports evidence of the induced migration of Mn2+ ions in Cd(1-x)MnxS nanocrystals (NCs) by selecting a specific thermal treatment for each sample. The growth and characterization of these magnetic dots were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical absorption (OA), and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. The comparison of experimental and simulated EPR spectra confirms the incorporation of Mn2+ ions both in the core and at the dot surface regions. The thermal treatment of a magnetic sample, via selected annealing temperature and/or time, affects the fine and hyperfine interaction constants which modify the shape and the intensity of the EPR transition spectrum. The identification of these changes has allowed tracing the magnetic ion migration from core to surface regions of a dot as well as inferring the local density of the magnetic impurity ions. This paper presents an up-to-date review of the evidence indicating that atypical neurotransmitters such as nitric oxide (NO) and endocannabinoids (eCBs) play an important role in the regulation of aversive responses in the periaqueductal gray (PAG). Among the results supporting this role, several studies have shown that inhibitors of neuronal NO synthase or cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) receptor agonists cause clear anxiolytic responses when injected into this region. The nitrergic and eCB systems can regulate the activity of classical neurotransmitters such as glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that control PAG activity. We propose that they exert a ‘fine-tuning’ regulatory control of defensive responses in this area. This control, however, is probably complex, which may explain the usually bell-shaped dose-response curves observed with drugs that act on NO- or CB1-mediated neurotransmission. Even if the mechanisms responsible for this complex interaction are still poorly understood, they are beginning to be recognized. For example, activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 channel (TRPV1) receptors by anandamide seems to counteract the anxiolytic effects induced by CB1 receptor activation caused by this compound. Further studies, however, are needed to identify other mechanisms responsible for this fine-tuning effect.

Il presente lavoro di tesi nasce come collaborazione tra il Laboratorio di Progettazione Elettronica e il Laboratorio di Microscopia a Fluorescenza del Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia dell' Università di Bologna. In particolare nasce dalla volontà di dotare il dipartimento di un apparato sperimentale in grado di svolgere studi sulla Galvanotassia, un fenomeno biologico consistente nella migrazione di cellule sottoposte a stimolazione elettrica. La Galvanotassia è nota da fine '800 ma non sono ancora chiari i meccanismi cellulari che la provocano. Una migliore comprensione di tale fenomeno potrebbe portare importanti sviluppi in ambito medico, sia diagnostici che terapeutici. Dalla letteratura a riguardo non è emersa l'esistenza di apparecchi elettronici di controllo che permettano lo studio della Galvanotassia e che possano essere duttili a seconda del tipo di esperimento che si voglia svolgere. Da qui l'idea di iniziare lo sviluppo di un dispositivo elettronico, che fosse riprogrammabile, a basso costo e facilmente trasportabile. La progettazione di questo dispositivo ha portato ad una prima fase di test e verifiche sperimentali che hanno permesso di migliorare e affinare la costruzione di uno strumento di misura e controllo dei parametri relativi alla Galvanotassia. Sono già stati programmati test futuri che porteranno ad una versione definitiva dell' apparecchiatura alla quale succederanno più approfondite ricerche sul fenomeno della Galvanotassia.

We identified a bipolar disorder (BPD) susceptibility region on chromosome 3q29 in a genome-wide linkage scan (Bailer et al. 2002 (Biol Psychiatry 52: 40), NPL-score 4.09) and follow-up linkage analysis (Schosser et al. 2004 (J Psychiatr Res 38(3): 357), NPL-scores >3 with five markers). These findings were supported by further fine-mapping of this region (Schosser et al. 2007 (Eur Neuropsychopharmacol 17(6-7): 501)), finding NPL-scores >3.9 with SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) spanning a region of 3.46 Mbp in BPD families. Since genetic association studies are more powerful than linkage studies for detecting susceptibility genes of small effect size, we aimed to replicate these findings in an independent case-control sample collected in London (UK) and Vienna (Austria).

This study investigates the compressive properties of concrete incorporating Mature Fine Tailings (MFTs) waste stream from a tar sands mining operation. The objectives of this study are to investigate material properties of the MFT material itself, as well as establish general feasibility of the utilization of MFT material in concrete mixtures through empirical data and visual observations. Investigations undertaken in this study consist of moisture content, materials finer than No. 200 sieve, Atterburg Limits as well as visual observations performed on MFT material as obtained. Control concrete mixtures as well as MFT replacement mixture designs (% by wt. of water) were guided by properties of the MFT material that were experimentally established. The experimental design consists of compression testing of 4”-diameter concrete cylinders of a control mixture, 30% MFT, 50% MFT and 70% MFT replacement mixtures with air-entrainer additive, as well as a control mixture and 30% MFT replacement mixture with no air-entrainer. A total of 6 mixtures (2 control mixtures, 4 replacement mixtures) moist-cured in lime water after 24 hours initial curing were tested for ultimate compressive strength at 7 days and 28 days in accordance to ASTM C39. The test results of fresh concrete material show that the addition of air-entrainer to the control mixture increases slump from 4” to 5.5”. However, the use of MFT material in concrete mixtures significantly decreases slump as compared to controls. All MFT replacement mixtures (30%, 50%, and 70%) with air-entrainer present slumps of 1”. 30% MFT with no air-entrainer presents a slump of 1.5”. It was found that 7-day ultimate compressive stress was not a good predictor of 28-day ultimate compressive stress. 28-day results indicate that the use of MFT material in concrete with air-entrainer decreases ultimate compressive stress for 30%, 50% and 70% MFT replacement amounts by 14.2%, 17.3% and 25.1% respectively.

Abstract Lake Ohrid is probably of Pliocene age, and the oldest extant lake in Europe. In this study climatic and environmental changes during the last glacial-interglacial cycle are reconstructed using lithological, sedimentological, geochemical and physical proxy analysis of a 15-m-long sediment succession from Lake Ohrid. A chronological framework is derived from tephrochronology and radiocarbon dating, which yields a basal age of ca. 136 ka. The succession is not continuous, however, with a hiatus between ca. 97.6 and 81.7 ka. Sediment accumulation in course of the last climatic cycle is controlled by the complex interaction of a variety of climate-controlled parameters and their impact on catchment dynamics, limnology, and hydrology of the lake. Warm interglacial and cold glacial climate conditions can be clearly distinguished from organic matter, calcite, clastic detritus and lithostratigraphic data. During interglacial periods, short-term fluctuations are recorded by abrupt variations in organic matter and calcite content, indicating climatically-induced changes in lake productivity and hydrology. During glacial periods, high variability in the contents of coarse silt to fine sand sized clastic matter is probably a function of climatically-induced changes in catchment dynamics and wind activity. In some instances tephra layers provide potential stratigraphic markers for short-lived climate perturbations. Given their widespread distribution in sites across the region, tephra analysis has the potential to provide insight into variation in the impact of climate and environmental change across the Mediterranean.

Little is known about the influence of different stressors on fine motor skills, the concentration of testosterone (T), and their interaction in adolescents. Therefore, 62 high school students aged 14–15 years were randomly assigned to two experimental groups (exercise, psychosocial stress) and a control group. Exercise stress was induced at 65–75% of the maximum heart rate by running for 15 minutes (n = 24). Psychosocial stress was generated by an intelligence test (HAWIK- IV), which was uncontrollable and characterized by social-evaluative-threat to the students (n=21). The control group followed was part of a regular school lesson with the same duration (n = 28). Saliva was collected after a normal school lesson (pre-test) as well as after the intervention/control period (post-test) and was analyzed for testosterone. Fine motor skills were assessed pre- and post-intervention using a manual dexterity test (Flower Trail) from the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2. A repeated measure ANCOVA including gender as a covariate revealed a significant group by test interaction, indicating an increase in manual dexterity only for the psychosocial stress group. Correlation analysis of all students shows that the change of testosterone from pre- to post-test was directly linked (r = 2.31, p = .01) to the changes in manual dexterity performance. Participants showing high increases in testosterone from pre- to post-test made fewer mistakes in the fine motor skills task. Findings suggest that manual dexterity increases when psychosocial stress is induced and that improvement of manual dexterity performance corresponds with the increase of testosterone.

Post-transcriptional cleavage of RNA molecules to generate smaller fragments is a widespread mechanism that enlarges the structural and functional complexity of cellular RNomes. In particular, fragments deriving from both precursor and mature tRNAs represent one of the rapidly growing classes of post-transcriptional RNA pieces. Importantly, these tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) possess distinct expression patterns, abundance, cellular localizations, or biological roles compared with their parental tRNA molecules (1). Here we present evidence that tRFs from the archaeon Haloferax volcanii directly bind to ribosomes. In a previous genomic screen for ribosome-associated small RNAs we have identified a 26 residue long fragment originating from the 5’ part of valine tRNA (Val-tRF) to be by far the most abundant tRF in H. volcanii (2). The Val-tRF is processed in a stress- dependent manner and was found to primarily target the small ribosomal subunit in vitro and in vivo. Translational activity was markedly reduced in the presence of Val-tRF, while control RNA fragments of similar length did not show inhibition of protein biosynthesis. Crosslinking experiments and subsequent primer extension analyses revealed the Val-tRF interaction site to surround the mRNA path in the 30S subunit. In support of this, binding experiments demonstrated that Val-tRF does compete with mRNAs for ribosome binding. Therefore this tRF represents a ribosome-bound non-protein-coding RNA (ncRNA) capable of regulating gene expression in H. volcanii under environmental stress conditions probably by fine-tuning the rate of protein production (1). Siliciclastic sedimentation at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1017 on the southern slope of the Santa Lucia Bank, central California margin, responded closely to oceanographic and climatic change over the past ~130 ka. Variation in mean grain-size and sediment sorting within the ~25-m-thick succession from Hole 1017E show Milankovitch-band to submillenial-scale variation. Mean grain size of the "sortable silt" fraction (10-63 µm) ranges from 17.6 to 33.9 µm (average 24.8 µm) and is inversely correlated with the degree of sorting. Much of the sediment has a bimodal or trimodal grain-size distribution that is composed of distinct fine silt, coarse silt to fine sand, and clay-size components. The position of the mode and the sorting of each component changes through the succession, but the primary variation is in the presence or abundance of the coarse silt fraction that controls the overall mean grain size and sorting of the sample. The occurrence of the best-sorted, finest grained sediment at high stands of sea level (Holocene, marine isotope Substages 5c and 5e) reflect the linkage between global climate and the sedimentary record at Site 1017 and suggest that the efficiency of off-shelf transport is a key control of sedimentation on the Santa Lucia Slope. It is not clear what proportion of the variation in grain size and sorting may also be caused by variations in bottom current strength and in situ hydrodynamic sorting.

This research was designed to check the assumption of the grain-size control on a gas hydrate presence in the Blake Ridge sediments; the assumption had originated from the data gained at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 533. Granulometric analysis (the combined pipette-sieve method) of the 345 sediment samples obtained after pore-water squeezing from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 994, 995, and 997 has provided support for this assumption. The zone of negative anomalies of pore-water chlorinity, which is generally recognized to be gas hydrate bearing, is confined, as a whole, to the interval of comparatively coarse-grained sediments in each of the three site columns because content of the fine fractions <0.05, <0.01, <0.005, and <0.001 mm is lower there (although the character of this control changes from site to site). The individual chlorinity anomalies also coincide, for the most part, with relatively coarse-grained sediments.

Background: In recent years, Spain has implemented a number of air quality control measures that are expected to lead to a future reduction in fine particle concentrations and an ensuing positive impact on public health. Objectives: We aimed to assess the impact on mortality attributable to a reduction in fine particle levels in Spain in 2014 in relation to the estimated level for 2007. Methods: To estimate exposure, we constructed fine particle distribution models for Spain for 2007 (reference scenario) and 2014 (projected scenario) with a spatial resolution of 16x16 km2. In a second step, we used the concentration-response functions proposed by cohort studies carried out in Europe (European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects and Rome longitudinal cohort) and North America (American Cancer Society cohort, Harvard Six Cities study and Canadian national cohort) to calculate the number of attributable annual deaths corresponding to all causes, all non-accidental causes, ischemic heart disease and lung cancer among persons aged over 25 years (2005-2007 mortality rate data). We examined the effect of the Spanish demographic shift in our analysis using 2007 and 2012 population figures. Results: Our model suggested that there would be a mean overall reduction in fine particle levels of 1mg/m3 by 2014. Taking into account 2007 population data, between 8 and 15 all-cause deaths per 100,000 population could be postponed annually by the expected reduction in fine particle levels. For specific subgroups, estimates varied from 10 to 30 deaths for all non-accidental causes, from 1 to 5 for lung cancer, and from 2 to 6 for ischemic heart disease. The expected burden of preventable mortality would be even higher in the future due to the Spanish population growth. Taking into account the population older than 30 years in 2012, the absolute mortality impact estimate would increase approximately by 18%. Conclusions: Effective implementation of air quality measures in Spain, in a scenario with a short-term projection, would amount to an appreciable decline infine particle concentrations, and this, in turn, would lead to notable health-related benefits. Recent European cohort studies strengthen the evidence of an association between long-term exposure to fine particles and health effects, and could enhance the health impact quantification in Europe. Air quality models can contribute to improved assessment of air pollution health impact estimates, particularly in study areas without air pollution monitoring data.

El principal objetivo de este trabajo es proporcionar una solución en tiempo real basada en visión estéreo o monocular precisa y robusta para que un vehículo aéreo no tripulado (UAV) sea autónomo en varios tipos de aplicaciones UAV, especialmente en entornos abarrotados sin señal GPS. Este trabajo principalmente consiste en tres temas de investigación de UAV basados en técnicas de visión por computador: (I) visual tracking, proporciona soluciones efectivas para localizar visualmente objetos de interés estáticos o en movimiento durante el tiempo que dura el vuelo del UAV mediante una aproximación adaptativa online y una estrategia de múltiple resolución, de este modo superamos los problemas generados por las diferentes situaciones desafiantes, tales como cambios significativos de aspecto, iluminación del entorno variante, fondo del tracking embarullado, oclusión parcial o total de objetos, variaciones rápidas de posición y vibraciones mecánicas a bordo. La solución ha sido utilizada en aterrizajes autónomos, inspección de plataformas mar adentro o tracking de aviones en pleno vuelo para su detección y evasión; (II) odometría visual: proporciona una solución eficiente al UAV para estimar la posición con 6 grados de libertad (6D) usando únicamente la entrada de una cámara estéreo a bordo del UAV. Un método Semi-Global Blocking Matching (SGBM) eficiente basado en una estrategia grueso-a-fino ha sido implementada para una rápida y profunda estimación del plano. Además, la solución toma provecho eficazmente de la información 2D y 3D para estimar la posición 6D, resolviendo de esta manera la limitación de un punto de referencia fijo en la cámara estéreo. Una robusta aproximación volumétrica de mapping basada en el framework Octomap ha sido utilizada para reconstruir entornos cerrados y al aire libre bastante abarrotados en 3D con memoria y errores correlacionados espacialmente o temporalmente; (III) visual control, ofrece soluciones de control prácticas para la navegación de un UAV usando Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) con la estimación visual. Y el framework de Cross-Entropy Optimization (CEO) ha sido usado para optimizar el factor de escala y la función de pertenencia en FLC. Todas las soluciones basadas en visión en este trabajo han sido probadas en test reales. Y los conjuntos de datos de imágenes reales grabados en estos test o disponibles para la comunidad pública han sido utilizados para evaluar el rendimiento de estas soluciones basadas en visión con ground truth. Además, las soluciones de visión presentadas han sido comparadas con algoritmos de visión del estado del arte. Los test reales y los resultados de evaluación muestran que las soluciones basadas en visión proporcionadas han obtenido rendimientos en tiempo real precisos y robustos, o han alcanzado un mejor rendimiento que aquellos algoritmos del estado del arte. La estimación basada en visión ha ganado un rol muy importante en controlar un UAV típico para alcanzar autonomía en aplicaciones UAV. ABSTRACT The main objective of this dissertation is providing real-time accurate robust monocular or stereo vision-based solution for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to achieve the autonomy in various types of UAV applications, especially in GPS-denied dynamic cluttered environments. This dissertation mainly consists of three UAV research topics based on computer vision technique: (I) visual tracking, it supplys effective solutions to visually locate interesting static or moving object over time during UAV flight with on-line adaptivity approach and multiple-resolution strategy, thereby overcoming the problems generated by the different challenging situations, such as significant appearance change, variant surrounding illumination, cluttered tracking background, partial or full object occlusion, rapid pose variation and onboard mechanical vibration. The solutions have been utilized in autonomous landing, offshore floating platform inspection and midair aircraft tracking for sense-and-avoid; (II) visual odometry: it provides the efficient solution for UAV to estimate the 6 Degree-of-freedom (6D) pose using only the input of stereo camera onboard UAV. An efficient Semi-Global Blocking Matching (SGBM) method based on a coarse-to-fine strategy has been implemented for fast depth map estimation. In addition, the solution effectively takes advantage of both 2D and 3D information to estimate the 6D pose, thereby solving the limitation of a fixed small baseline in the stereo camera. A robust volumetric occupancy mapping approach based on the Octomap framework has been utilized to reconstruct indoor and outdoor large-scale cluttered environments in 3D with less temporally or spatially correlated measurement errors and memory; (III) visual control, it offers practical control solutions to navigate UAV using Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) with the visual estimation. And the Cross-Entropy Optimization (CEO) framework has been used to optimize the scaling factor and the membership function in FLC. All the vision-based solutions in this dissertation have been tested in real tests. And the real image datasets recorded from these tests or available from public community have been utilized to evaluate the performance of these vision-based solutions with ground truth. Additionally, the presented vision solutions have compared with the state-of-art visual algorithms. Real tests and evaluation results show that the provided vision-based solutions have obtained real-time accurate robust performances, or gained better performance than those state-of-art visual algorithms. The vision-based estimation has played a critically important role for controlling a typical UAV to achieve autonomy in the UAV application.
