About this leaflet This is one in a series of leaflets for parents, teachers and young people entitled Mental Health and Growing Up. These leaflets aim to provide practical, up-to-date information about mental health problems (emotional, behavioural and psychiatric disorders) that can affect children and young people. This leaflet gives you some basic facts about cannabis and also how it might affect your mental health. Introduction Lots of young people want to know about drugs. Often, people around you are taking them, and you may wonder how it will make you feel. You may even feel under pressure to use drugs in order to fit in, or be â?~coolâ?T. You may have heard that cannabis is no worse than cigarettes, or that it is harmless. What is cannabis? The cannabis plant is a member of the nettle family that has grown wild throughout the world for centuries. People have used it for lots of reasons, other than the popular relaxing effect. It comes in two main forms: ï,§ resin, which is a brown black lump also known as bhang, ganja or hashish ï,§ herbal cannabis, which is made up of the dried leaves and flowering tops, and is known as grass, marijuana, spliff, weed, etc. Skunk cannabis is made from a cannabis plant that has more active chemicals in it (THC), and the effect on your brain is stronger. Because â?~streetâ?T cannabis varies so much in strength, you will not be able to tell exactly how it will make you feel at any particular time. What does it do to you? When you smoke cannabis, the active compounds reach your brain quickly through your bloodstream. It then binds/sticks to a special receptor in your brain. This causes your nerve cells to release different chemicals, and causes the effects that you feel. These effects can be enjoyable or unpleasant. Often the bad effects take longer to appear than the pleasant ones. ï,§ Good/pleasant effects: You may feel relaxed and talkative, and colours or music may seem more intense. ï,§ Unpleasant effects: Feeling sick/panicky, feeling paranoid or hearing voices, feeling depressed and unmotivated. Unfortunately, some people can find cannabis addictive and so have trouble stopping use even when they are not enjoying it. The effects on your mental health Using cannabis triggers mental health problems in people who seemed to be well before, or it can worsen any mental health problems you already have. Research has shown that people who are already at risk of developing mental health problems are more likely to start showing symptoms of mental illness if they use cannabis regularly. For example if someone in your family has depression or schizophrenia, you are at higher risk of getting these illness when you use cannabis. The younger you are when you start using it, the more you may be at risk. This is because your brain is still developing and can be more easily damaged by the active chemicals in cannabis. If you stop using cannabis once you have started to show symptoms of mental illness, such as depression, paranoia or hearing voices, these symptoms may go away. However, not everyone will get better just by stopping smoking. If you go on using cannabis, the symptoms can get worse. It can also make any treatment that your doctor might prescribe for you, work less well. Your illness may come back more quickly, and more often if you continue to use cannabis once you get well again. Some people with mental health problems find that using cannabis makes them feel a bit better for a while. Unfortunately this does not last, and it does nothing to treat the illness. In fact, it may delay you from getting help you need and the illness may get worse in the longer term. The Mayo North East Ballina Eat Wise project will proactively engage with disadvantaged communities, including migrant and Traveller groups, in Ballina to encourage and support people to make informed decisions regarding their diet and that of their families. The project aims to empower people with the resources, skills and knowledge to improve their physical and mental wellbeing through affordable healthy eating. A steering group comprising local stakeholders will be established to co-ordinate and inform the CFI’s work and to ensure it is fully addressing the needs of the target group. The CFI will begin by developing a training module to equip a group of peer researchers to carry out a needs analysis. The information gathered will inform the practical aspects of the project ensuring participation and a sense of ownership from the local community. Young people will be targeted through local schools and youth organisations. Training will be provided for both adults and young people in vegetable/fruit growing, nutrition, cooking, preventing food wastage, smart shopping and budgeting. Practical cookery demonstrations coupled with advice on healthy eating will take place in the target areas. The project will also engage with local supermarkets and takeaways to encourage the provision of healthy affordable options. Other options to increase the availability of healthy food in the target areas will be explored. KASI acquired a site from Killarney Parish for a community garden project. The community garden provides a form of activity through volunteerism for asylum seekers in direct provisions who are not allowed to work. The participants will focus on growing crops and developing the garden which will facilitate interaction between the target groups and local communities in a very holistic and organic manner of working together, sharing and exchanging ideas, skills, crops, food and culture. KASI is developing a community garden on the outskirts of Killarney town. The sedentary lifestyle in direct provisions can cause isolation, depression and other mental health issues for asylum seekers. The community garden project provides a space for migrant workers and their families (most of whom live in flats and apartments and do not have access to a garden space) to grow their own crops. The community garden project will provide training on organic gardening, nutrition, healthy eating habits,cooking on a budget, cookery demonstrations and an opportunity for participants to exchange skills, knowledge, recipes and food. In addition, the project will enable locals to get information on nutritional values of herbs and authentic, healthy ethnic recipes. This initiative could also facilitate KASI influencing the diets and menu in direct provision centres. KASI will open a social space for training and cookery demonstrations for target groups and locals. La cuticule des plantes, composée de cutine, un polyester lipidique complexe et de cires cuticulaires, couvre l'épiderme de la plupart des parties aériennes des plantes. Elle est constituée d'une barrière hydrophobique primaire qui minimise les pertes en eau et en soluté et protège l'organisme de différents stress environnementaux tels que les rayons UV, la dessiccation et l'infection par des pathogènes. Elle est aussi impliquée dans la délimitation des organes durant le développement. La cutine est un polyester qui, dans la plupart des espèces végétales, est principalement composé d'acides gras ω-hydroxylés composé de 16 à 18 carbones. Cependant, la cutine des feuilles d'Arabidopsis a une composition différente et est principalement constituée d'acides dicarboxyliques à 16-18 carbones. Les cires sont présentes dans le polyester de la cutine ou le recouvrent. Chez Arabidopsis, un nombre de mutants, tel que 1er, bdg, hth, att1, wbc11, et des plantes transgéniques avec différents changement dans la structure de la cuticule dans les feuilles et la tige, ont récemment été décrits et servent d'outils pour étudier la relation entre la structure et la fonction de la cuticule.7 mutants d'Arabidopsis ont été isolés par une méthode de coloration qui permet de détecter une augmentation dans la perméabilité cuticulaire. Ces mutants ont été appelés pec pour permeable cuticle.Pour la première partie de mon projet, j'ai principalement travaillé avec pec9/bre1 (permeable cuticle 9/botrytis resistance 1). PEC9/BRE1 a été identifié comme étant LACS2 (LONG CHAIN ACYL-CoA SYNTHETASE 2). Dans ce mutant, la cuticule n'est pas visible sous microscopie électronique et la quantité en acides gras omega- hydroxylés et en leurs dérivés est fortement réduite. Ces altérations conduisent à une plus grande perméabilité de la cuticule qui est mise en évidence par une plus grande sensibilité à la sécheresse et aux xénobiotiques et une coloration plus rapide par bleu de toluidine. Le mutant Iacs2 démontre aussi une grande capacité de résistance à l'infection du champignon nécrotrophique B. cinerea. Cette résistance est due à l'extrusion sur les feuilles d'un composé antifongique durant l'infection. Ce travail a été publié dans EMBO journal (Bessire et al., 2007, EMBO Journal).Mon second projet était principalement concentré sur pec1, un autre mutant isolé par le premier crible. La caractérisation de pec1 a révélé des phénotypes similaires à ceux de Iacs2, mais à chaque fois dans des proportions moindres : sensibilité accrue à la sécheresse et aux herbicides, plus grande perméabilité au bleu de toluidine et au calcofluor white, altération de la structure cuticulaire et résistance à B. cinerea à travers la même activité antifongique. PEC1 a été identifié comme étant AtPDR4. Ce gène code pour un transporteur ABC de la famille PDR ("Pleiotropic Drugs Resistance") qui sont des transporteurs ayants un large spectre de substrats. Le mutant se différencie de Iacs2, en cela que la composition en acides gras de la cuticule n'est pas autant altérée. C'est principalement le dihydroxypalmitate des fleurs dont la quantité est réduite. L'expression du gène marqué avec une GFP sous le contrôle du promoteur endogène a permis de localiser le transporteur au niveau de la membrane plasmique des cellules de l'épiderme, de manière polaire. En effet, la protéine est principalement dirigée vers l'extérieure de la plante, là où se trouve la cuticule, suggérant une implication d'AtPDR4 dans le transport de composants de la cuticule. Ce travail est actuellement soumis à Plant Cell.Une étude phylogénétique a aussi montré qu'AtPDR4 était très proche d'OsPDR6 du riz. Le mutant du riz a d'ailleurs montré des phénotypes de nanisme et de perméabilité similaire au mutant chez Arabidopsis.AbstractThe cuticle, consisting principally of cutin and cuticular waxes, is a hydrophobic layer of lipidic nature, which covers all aerial parts of plants and protects them from different abiotic and biotic stresses. Recently, the research in this area has given us a better understanding of the structure and the formation of the cuticle. The Arabidopsis mutants permeable cuticle 1 (peel) and botrytis resistance 1 (brel) were identified in two screens to identify permeable cuticles. The screens used the fluorescent dye calcofluor to measure permeability and also resistance to the fungal pathogen Botrytis. These mutants have highly permeable cuticle characteristics such as higher water loss, intake of chemicals through the cuticle, higher resistance to Botrytis cinerea infection, and organ fusion.BRE1 was cloned and found to be LACS2, a gene previously identified which is important in the formation and biosynthetic pathway of the cuticle. In brel, the amount of the major component of cutin in Arabidopsis leaves and stems, dicarboxylic acids, is five times lower than in the wild type. Moreover, the permeability of the cuticle allows the release of antifungal compounds at the leaf surface that inhibits the growth of two necrotrophic fungi: Botrytis cinerea and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.PEC1 was identified as AtPDR4, a gene that codes for a plasma membrane transporter of the Pleiotropic Drug Resistance family, a sub-family of the ABC- transporters. AtPDR4 is strongly expressed in the epidermis of expanding tissues. In the epidermis it is located in a polar manner on the external plasma membrane, facing the cuticle. Analysis of the monomer composition of the cutin reveals that in this mutant the amount of hydroxy-acids and dihydroxy-palmitate is 2-3 times lower in flowers, in which organ these cutin monomers are the major components. Thus AtPDR4 is thought to function as a putative cutin monomer transporter.

Queens and workers in social insect colonies can differ in reproductive goals such as colony-level sex allocation and production of males by workers. That the presence of queen(s) often seems to affect worker behaviour in situations of potential conflict has given rise to the idea of queen control over reproduction. In small colonies queen control is possible via direct aggression against workers, but in large colonies queens cannot be effectively aggressive towards all the workers. This, plus evidence that queen-produced chemicals affect worker behaviour, has led to the conclusion that physical intimidation has been replaced by pheromonal queen control, whereby queen(s) chemically manipulate workers into behaving in ways that increase the queen's fitness at the worker's expense. It is argued in this paper, however, that pheromonal queen control has never conclusively been demonstrated and is evolutionarily difficult to justify. Proposed examples of pheromonal control are more likely to be honest signals, with workers' responses increasing their own inclusive fitness. A series of experimental and field studies in which positive results would give prima facie evidence for pheromonal queen control is suggested. Finally, three terms are defined: (1) pheromonal queen control for workers or subordinate queens being chemically manipulated into acting against their own best interests; (2) pheromonal queen signal for situations where workers or subordinate queens react to queen pheromones in ways that increase their, and possibly the queens', inclusive fitness; and (3) pheromonal queen effect where changes in the workers' or subordinate queens' behaviour have an unknown consequence on their inclusive fitness.

A decline in human sperm quality and quantity has been reported in numerous Western countries. This observation was also accompanied by an increase in urogenital malformations. The need for epidemiological studies dealing with unbiased populations in order to understand the causes of these observations is obvious. In Switzerland, the large majority of young men are asked to attend a military camp to be drafted into the army. A few weeks before this camp, conscripts were contacted and invited to participate in a large national study on semen quality. The participation was totally voluntary and anonymous. From September 2005 to June 2007, 770 volunteers filled out a questionnaire, underwent a clinical examination and provided sperm, blood and urine samples. Using self-rated health assessments, the observed cohort could be considered as healthy and no testicular cancer was found. Moreover, the testicular volumes, measured using Prader's orchidometry and ultrasonography, were comparable to those already published for young male populations. The median sperm concentration was 47 x 10(6)/ml, which is close to the concentration reported in Denmark, known to have the highest incidence of testicular cancer in Europe. Statistically significant differences were observed between regions with a lower sperm concentration for men residing in the Alps (43 x 10(6)/ml) and in the Zurich area (36 x 10(6)/ml) compared to men from West Plateau (54 x 10(6)/ml) and from the Jura (54 x 10(6)/ml). Such a regional discrepancy could be related to environmental factors, including endocrine disruptors. In order to confirm such regional differences more volunteers from the already studied regions should be studied and other parts of the country should be investigated. The rather low sperm concentration of Swiss young volunteers should be considered as a national health issue and investigated further.

A 45-year-old woman with personal history of hypertension presented with an erythematous lesion in the neckline for a year and with a progressive growth. A physical examination revealed an annular lesion with erythematous papules in the edge. Histological exam showed phagocytosis of elastic fibers by multinucleated cells compatible with annular elastolytic giant-cell granuloma. The patient did not present any other associated systemic manifestation. Treatment with tacrolimus 0.1 percent ointment was prescribed with a very good response after two months.

INTRODUCTION: Smoothelin is a cytoskeletal protein of differentiated smooth muscle cells with contractile capacity, distinguishing it from other smooth muscle proteins, such as smooth muscle actin (SMA). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the expression of smoothelin and SMA in the skin in order to establish specific localizations of smoothelin in smooth muscle cells with high contractile capacity and in the epithelial component of cutaneous adnexal structures. Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis (smoothelin and SMA) was performed in 18 patients with normal skin. RESULTS: SMA was expressed by the vascular structures of superficial, deep, intermediate and adventitial plexuses, whereas smoothelin was specifically expressed in the cytoplasm of smooth muscle cells of the deepest vascular plexus and in no other plexus of the dermis. The hair erector muscle showed intense expression of smoothelin and SMA. Cells with nuclear expression of smoothelin and cytoplasmic expression of SMA were observed in the outer root sheath of the inferior portion of the hair follicles and intense cytoplasmic expression in cells of the dermal sheath to SMA. CONCLUSIONS: We report the first study of smoothelin expression in normal skin, which differentiates the superficial vascular plexus from the deep. The deep plexus comprises vessels with high contractile capacity, which is important for understanding dermal hemodynamics in normal skin and pathological processes. We suggest that the function of smoothelin in the outer root sheath may be to enhance the function of SMA, which has been related to mechanical stress. Smoothelin has not been studied in cutaneous pathology; however we believe it may be a marker specific for the diagnosis of leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas of the skin. Also, smoothelin could differentiate arteriovenous malformations of cavernous hemangioma of the skin
