In this we have looked at the concept of introducing carbon nanotubes on the surfaces of the microstrip patch antennas. We examined the performance improvements in a patch antenna through finite difference time domain simulations to increase the efficiency of the antenna. The results suggest that carbon nanotubes lead to a higher gain due to their electrical properties. A high gain antenna with low power requirements resulted in achieving a higher overall bandwidth. The designed antenna's gain, bandwidth and directivity are analyzed before and after introducing carbon nanotubes. © 2013 IEEE.

The size of pixels is one of the key limiting features in the state of the art of holographic displays systems. The resolution and field of view in these systems are dictated by the size of the pixel (the smallest light scattering element). We have demonstrated the utilization of carbon nanotubes (nanostructures) as the smallest possible scattering element for diffracting light in a highly controlled manner to produce a two dimensional image. An array of carbon nanotubes was elegantly patterned to produce a high resolution hologram. In response to the incident light on the hologram a high contrast image was produced. Due to the nanoscale dimension of the carbon nanotube array the image presented a wide field of view and high resolution. These results pave way towards the utilization of nanostructures for producing 3D holograms with wide field of view and high resolution. © 2013 IEEE.

Since the discovery of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) by Iijima in 1991[1, 2], there has been an explosion of research into the physical and chemical properties of this novel material. CNT based biosensors can play an important role in amperometric, immunosensor and nucleic-acid sensing devices, e.g. for detection of life threatening biological agents in time of war or in terrorist attacks, saving life and money for the NHS. CNTs offer unique advantages in several areas, like high surfacevolume ratio, high electrical conductivity, chemical stability and strong mechanical strength, and CNT based sensors generally have higher sensitivities and lower detection limit than conventional ones. In this review, recent advances in biosensors utilising carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube fibres will be discussed. The synthesis methods, nanostructure approaches and current developments in biosensors using CNTs will be introduced in the first part. In the second part, the synthesis methods and up-to-date progress in CNT fibre biosensors will be reviewed. Finally, we briefly outline some exciting applications for CNT and CNT fibres which are being targeted. By harnessing the continual advancements in micro and nano- technology, the functionality and capability of CNT-based biosensors will be enhanced, thus expanding and enriching the possible applications that can be delivered by these devices. © 2012 Bentham Science Publishers. One-color transient reflectivity measurements are carried out on two different samples of vertically aligned single-wall carbon nanotube bundles and compared with the response recently published on unaligned bundles. The negative sign of the optical response for both samples indicates that the free electron character revealed on unaligned bundles is only due to the intertube interactions favored by the tube bending. Neither the presence of bundles nor the existence of structural defects in aligned bundles is able to induce a free-electron like behavior of the photoexcited carriers. This result is also confirmed by the presence of non-linear excitonic effects in the transient response of the aligned bundles. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The construction of protein-based photoelectrochemical cells that produce a variety of alternating currents in response to discontinuous illumination is reported. The photovoltaic component is a protein complex from the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides which catalyses photochemical charge separation with a high quantum yield. Photoelectrochemical cells formed from this protein, a mobile redox mediator and a counter electrode formed from cobalt disilicide, titanium nitride, platinum, or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) generate a direct current during continuous illumination and an alternating current with different characteristics during discontinuous illumination. In particular, the use of superhydrophobic MWCNT as the back electrode results in a near symmetrical forward and reverse current upon light on and light off, respectively. The symmetry of the AC output of these cells is correlated with the wettability of the counter electrode. Potential applications of a hybrid biological/synthetic solar cell capable of generating an approximately symmetrical alternating current are discussed. Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We systematically study the growth of carbon nanotube forests by chemical vapor deposition using evaporated monometallic or bimetallic Ni, Co, or Fe films supported on alumina. Our results show two regimes of catalytic activity. When the total thickness of catalyst is larger than nominally 1nm, bimetallic catalysts tend to outperform the equivalent layers of a single metal, yielding taller forests of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In contrast, for layers thinner than ~1nm, bimetallic catalysts are notably less active than individually. However, the amount of small diameter and single-walled CNTs is significantly increased. This possible transition at ~1nm might be related to different catalyst composition after annealing, depending whether or not the films overlap during evaporation and alloy during catalyst formation. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We analyze the relationship between the average wall number (N) and the diameter (d) for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown by chemical vapour deposition. It is found that N depends linearly on d for diameters in the range of 2.5-10 nm, while single wall nanotubes predominate for diameters under about 2.1 nm. The linear relationship is found to depend somewhat on the growth conditions. It is also verified that the mean diameter depends on the diameter of the originating catalyst nanoparticle, and thus on the initial catalyst thickness where a thin film catalyst is used. This simplifies the characterisation of CNTs by electron microscopy. We also find a linear relationship between nanotube diameter and initial catalyst film thickness. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

In this article, we describe a simple method to reversibly tune the wetting properties of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. Here, CNT arrays are defined as densely packed multi-walled carbon nanotubes oriented perpendicular to the growth substrate as a result of a growth process by the standard thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique.(1,2) These CNT arrays are then exposed to vacuum annealing treatment to make them more hydrophobic or to dry oxidation treatment to render them more hydrophilic. The hydrophobic CNT arrays can be turned hydrophilic by exposing them to dry oxidation treatment, while the hydrophilic CNT arrays can be turned hydrophobic by exposing them to vacuum annealing treatment. Using a combination of both treatments, CNT arrays can be repeatedly switched between hydrophilic and hydrophobic.(2) Therefore, such combination show a very high potential in many industrial and consumer applications, including drug delivery system and high power density supercapacitors.(3-5) The key to vary the wettability of CNT arrays is to control the surface concentration of oxygen adsorbates. Basically oxygen adsorbates can be introduced by exposing the CNT arrays to any oxidation treatment. Here we use dry oxidation treatments, such as oxygen plasma and UV/ozone, to functionalize the surface of CNT with oxygenated functional groups. These oxygenated functional groups allow hydrogen bond between the surface of CNT and water molecules to form, rendering the CNT hydrophilic. To turn them hydrophobic, adsorbed oxygen must be removed from the surface of CNT. Here we employ vacuum annealing treatment to induce oxygen desorption process. CNT arrays with extremely low surface concentration of oxygen adsorbates exhibit a superhydrophobic behavior.

The concept of co-catalytic layer structures for controlled laser-induced chemical vapor deposition of carbon nanotubes is established, in which a thin Ta support layer chemically aids the initial Fe catalyst reduction. This enables a significant reduction in laser power, preventing detrimental positive optical feedback and allowing improved growth control. Systematic study of experimental parameters combined with simple thermostatic modeling establishes general guidelines for the effective design of such catalyst/absorption layer combinations. Local growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotube forests directly on flexible polyimide substrates is demonstrated, opening up new routes for nanodevice design and fabrication.

We demonstrate wide-band ultrafast optical pulse generation at 1, 1.5, and 2 μm using a single-polymer composite saturable absorber based on double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). The freestanding optical quality polymer composite is prepared from nanotubes dispersed in water with poly(vinyl alcohol) as the host matrix. The composite is then integrated into ytterbium-, erbium-, and thulium-doped fiber laser cavities. Using this single DWNT-polymer composite, we achieve 4.85 ps, 532 fs, and 1.6 ps mode-locked pulses at 1066, 1559, and 1883 nm, respectively, highlighting the potential of DWNTs for wide-band ultrafast photonics.

We study the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the optical phenomena of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCN) and also their chirality dependence. Especially, we consider the natural optical activity as a proper observable and derive its general expression based on a comprehensive symmetry analysis, which reveals the interplay between the enclosed magnetic flux and the tubule chirality for arbitrary chiral SWCN. A quantitative result for this optical property is given by a gauge invariant tight-binding approximation calculation to stimulate experimental measurements.

Using classical constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations and the force constants model, radial breathing mode (RBM) transition of single-wall carbon nanotubes under hydrostatic pressure is reported. With the pressure increased, the RBM shifts linearly toward higher frequency, and the RBM transition occurs at the same critical pressure as the structural transition. The group theory indicates that the RBMs are all Raman-active; however, due to the effect of the frequency transition and the electronic structure change for tube radial deformation, the Raman intensity of the modes becomes so weak as not to be experimentally detected, which is in agreement with a recent experiment by S. Lebedkin [Phys. Rev. B 73, 094109 (2006)]. Furthermore, the calculated RBM transition pressure is well fitted to the cube of diameter (similar to 1/d(3)).
