Rodents from and and semi-arid deserts are faced with the problem of water conservation. The physiological responses of small rodents to such conditions have been intensively investigated over broad geographically disjunct areas. Despite the presence of xeric habitats in South America since the late Tertiary, some studies suggest that sigmodontine South-American desert rodents do not display the same diversity of physiological responses at the species level as those observed in other desert-dwelling species of rodents. In this paper, we analyzed the physiological responses to water deprivation, at the interespecific and interindividual level, among eight species of sigmodontine desert-dwelling rodents from different geographical areas within South-American deserts. Using randomization tests, we found no significant phylogenetic signal for resistance to water deprivation or for individual variability in this response. Contrary to our initial predictions, we observed that sigmodontine rodents from arid/semi-arid habitats (Monte Desert) had significantly lower rates of body mass loss per day (higher tolerances to water deprivation) than species from the hyperarid deserts. We showed that sigmodontine rodents from South America showed a remarkable diversity of physiological mechanisms for coping with water shortage resulting from different evolutionary adaptive strategies. This diversity, however, displays a rather unexpected pattern in terms of its geographical distribution. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. (Aizoaceae) is a facultative annual halophyte and a C-3-photosynthesis/crassulacean acid metabolism intermediate species currently used as a model plant in stress physiology. Both salinity and high light irradiance stress are known to induce CAM in this species. The present study was performed to provide a diagnosis of alterations at the photosystem 11 level during salinity and irradiance stress. Plants were subjected for up to 13 days to either 0.4M NaCl salinity or high irradiance of 1000 mu mol m(-2) s(-1), as well as to both stress factors combined (LLSA = low light plus salt; HLCO = high light of 1000 mu mol m(-2)s(-1), no salt; HLSA = high light plus salt). A control of LLCO = low light of 200 mu mol m(-2) s(-1), no salt was used. Parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence of photosystem 11 (PSII) were measured with a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer. HLCO and LLSA conditions induced a weak degree of CAM with day/night changes of malate levels (Delta malate) of similar to 12 mM in the course of the experiment, while HLSA induced stronger CAM of Delta malate similar to 20mM. Effective quantum yield of PSII, Delta F/F'(m), was only slightly affected by LLSA, somewhat reduced during the course of the experiment by HLCO and clearly reduced by HLSA. Potential quantum efficiency of PSII, F-v/F-m, at predawn times was not affected by any of the conditions, always remaining at >= 0.8, showing that there was no acute photoinhibition. During the course of the days HL alone (HLCO) also did not elicit photoinhibition; salt alone (LLSA) caused acute photoinhibition which was amplified by the combination of the two stresses (HLSA). Non-photochemical, NPQ, quenching remained low (< 0.5) under LLCO, LLSA and HLCO and increased during the course of the experiment under HLSA to 1-2. Maximum apparent photosynthetic electron transport rates, ETRmax, declined during the daily courses and were reduced by LLSA and to a similar extent by HLSA. It is concluded that A crystallinum expresses effective stress tolerance mechanisms but photosynthetic capacity is reduced by the synergistic effects of salinity and tight irradiance stress combined. The present study was designed to analyse the effects of aerobic exercise on the metabolic effects of alloxan. Male Wistar newborn rats (2 days old) received alloxan (200 mg (kg body weight)(-1)) intraperitoneally (A rats). Vehicle-injected rats were used as controls (C rats). At 28 days old, some of the A rats were subjected to swimming for 1 h day(-1), 5 day week(-1) (AT rats). At 28, 60 and 90 days old the animals were subjected to glucose (GTTo) and insulin (ITTsc) tolerance tests. All the animals were then killed by decapitation for blood and tissue evaluations. on the 60th day, there was a reduction in blood glucose level during the GTTo (mmol l(-1) (90 min)(-1)) in the AT rats (7640.7+/-694.0) with respect to C (7057.5+/-776.9) and A (8555.6+/-1096.7) rats. However on the 90th day, AT rats showed higher glucose levels (8004.6+/-267.9) when compared to the other groups (C, 7305.5+/-871.2; A, 7088.8+/-536.9). The serum free fatty acid (FFA) concentration (muEq l(-1)) was higher in the alloxan-treated animals (A, 231.1+/-58.5; AT, 169.8+/-20.1) than in controls (C, 101.4+/-22.4). In conclusion, although the high blood glucose level is transitory in the A animals, some blood and tissue alterations remain and can be harmful to the maintenance of homeostasis. Physical exercise counteracted only partially these alterations. Furthermore, training worsened glucose tolerance at the 90th day, suggesting that exercise intensity should be adjusted to the diabetic condition.
