An analytical approach for CMOS parameter extraction which includes the effect of parasitic resistance is presented. The method is based on small-signal equivalent circuit valid in all region of operation to uniquely extract extrinsic resistances, which can be used to extend the industry standard BSIM3v3 MOSFET model for radio frequency applications. The verification of the model was carried out through frequency domain measurements of S-parameters and direct time domain measurement at 2.4 GHz in a large signal non-linear mode of operation. A periodic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is presented and applied for the first time in the study of a two-dimensional (2-D) leaky-wave planar antenna based on dipole frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). First, the effect of certain aspects of the FDTD modeling in the modal analysis of complex waves is studied in detail. Then, the FDTD model is used for the dispersion analysis of the antenna of interest. The calculated values of the leaky-wave attenuation constants suggest that, for an antenna of this type and moderate length, a significant amount of power reaches the edges of the antenna, and thus diffraction can play an important role. To test the validity of our dispersion analysis, measured radiation patterns of a fabricated prototype are presented and compared with those predicted by a leaky-wave approach based on the periodic FDTD results.

A techno-economic model of an autonomous wave-powered desalination plant is developed and indicates that fresh water can be produced for as little as £0.45/m3. The advantages of an autonomous wave-powered desalination plant are also discussed indicating that the real value of the system is enhanced due to its flexibility for deployment and reduced environmental impact. The modelled plant consists of the Oyster wave energy converter, conventional reverse osmosis membranes and a pressure exchanger–intensifier for energy recovery. A time-domain model of the plant is produced using wave-tank experimentation to calibrate the model of Oyster, manufacturer's data for the model of the reverse osmosis membranes and a hydraulic model of the pressure exchanger–intensifier. The economic model of the plant uses best-estimate cost data which are reduced to annualised costs to facilitate the calculation of the cost of water. Finally, the barriers to the deployment of this technology are discussed, but they are not considered insurmountable.

The radiation efficiency and resonance frequency of five compact antennas worn by nine individual test subjects was measured at 2.45 GHz in a reverberation chamber. The results show that, despite significant differences in body mass, wearable antenna radiation efficiency had a standard deviation less than 0.6 dB and the resonance frequency shift was less than 1% between test subjects. Variability in the radiation efficiency and resonance frequency shift between antennas was largely dependant on body tissue coupling which is related to both antenna geometry and radiation characteristics. The reverberation chamber measurements were validated using a synthetic tissue phantom and compared with results obtained in a spherical near field chamber and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation.

In this letter, the performance bound of the IEEE 802.16d channel is examined analytically in order to gain an insight into its theoretical potential. Different design strategies, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), time-domain decision feedback equalization (DFE), and sphere decoder (SD) techniques are discussed and compared to the theoretical bound.

A time-domain formulation of a lumped model ap-
proximation of a clarinet reed excitation mechanism is presented.
The lumped model is based on an analytical representation of
the ow within the reed channel, incorporating a contraction
coefcient (vena contracta factor) that is dened as the ratio of
the effective ow over the Bernoulli ow. This coefcient has
been considered to be constant in previous studies focusing on
sound synthesis. In this paper it will be treated as a function
of the reed opening, varying between 0 and 1 as predicted by
boundary layer ow theory. Focussing on a specic mouthpiece
geometry, the effect of modelling a variable air jet height on the
synthesised sound is analysed.

In this paper, a complete method for finite-difference time-domain modeling of rooms in 2-D using compact explicit schemes is presented. A family of interpolated schemes using a rectilinear, nonstaggered grid is reviewed, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes are identified. Frequency-dependent boundaries are modeled using a digital impedance filter formulation that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory. A structurally stable and efficient boundary formulation is constructed by carefully combining the boundary condition with the interpolated scheme. An analytic prediction formula for the effective numerical reflectance is given, and a stability proof provided. The results indicate that the identified accurate and isotropic schemes are also very accurate in terms of numerical boundary reflectance, and outperform directly related methods such as Yee's scheme and the standard digital waveguide mesh. In addition, one particular scheme-referred to here as the interpolated wideband scheme-is suggested as the best scheme for most applications.

This paper presents methods for simulating room acoustics using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, focusing on boundary and medium modeling. A family of nonstaggered 3-D compact explicit FDTD schemes is analyzed in terms of stability, accuracy, and computational efficiency, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes based on a rectilinear grid are identified. A frequency-dependent boundary model that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory is also presented, in which the wall impedance is represented with a digital filter. For boundaries, accuracy in numerical reflection is analyzed and a stability proof is provided. The results indicate that the proposed 3-D interpolated wideband and isotropic schemes outperform directly related techniques based on Yee's staggered grid and standard digital waveguide mesh, and that the boundary formulations generally have properties that are similar to that of the basic scheme used.

We present the early UV and optical light curve of Type IIP supernova (SN) 2010aq at z = 0.0862, and compare it to analytical models for thermal emission following SN shock breakout in a red supergiant star. SN 2010aq was discovered in joint monitoring between the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Time Domain Survey (TDS) in the NUV and the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS) in the g, r, i, and z bands. The GALEX and Pan-STARRS1 observations detect the SN less than 1 day after the shock breakout, measure a diluted blackbody temperature of 31,000 +/- 6000 K 1 day later, and follow the rise in the UV/optical light curve over the next 2 days caused by the expansion and cooling of the SN ejecta. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the simultaneous UV and optical photometry allows us to fit for a progenitor star radius of 700 +/- 200R(circle dot), the size of a red supergiant star. An excess in UV emission two weeks after shock breakout compared with SNe well fitted by model atmosphere-code synthetic spectra with solar metallicity is best explained by suppressed line blanketing due to a lower metallicity progenitor star in SN 2010aq. Continued monitoring of PS1 MDS fields by the GALEX TDS will increase the sample of early UV detections of Type II SNe by an order of magnitude and probe the diversity of SN progenitor star properties.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) requires an expensive linear amplifier at the transmitter due to its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Single carrier with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) is a closely related transmission scheme that possesses most of the benefits of OFDM but does not have the PAPR problem. Although in a multipath environment, SC-CP is very robust to frequency-selective fading, it is sensitive to the time-selective fading characteristics of the wireless channel that disturbs the orthogonality of the channel matrix (CM) and increases the computational complexity of the receiver. In this paper, we propose a time-domain low-complexity iterative algorithm to compensate for the effects of time selectivity of the channel that exploits the sparsity present in the channel convolution matrix. Simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed algorithm over the standard linear minimum mean-square error (L-MMSE) equalizer for SC-CP.

This paper describes the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis of antenna-body interaction effects occurring when chest-mounted 418 MHz radio transmitters are used for medical telemetry applications. Whole-body software models (homogeneous, layered and tissue-segmented) were developed for an adult male subject. Using an electrically small (300 mm(2)) planar loop antenna, calculated radiation efficiencies ranged between 33.5% and 39.2% for a whole-body model, and between 60.7% and 66.1% for a torso; radiation patterns were found to be largely independent of model composition. The computed radiation efficiency for a 21.5 kg phantom representing a six-year-old female was within 1.1 dB of measured results (actual body mass 28 kg) and well-correlated azimuthal radiation patterns were noted.

Accurate determination of shear wave arrival time using bender elements may be severely affected by a combination of near-field effects and reflected waves. These may mask the first arrival of the shear wave, making its detection difficult in the time domain. This paper describes an approach for measuring the shear wave arrival time through analysis of the output signal in the time-scale domain using a multi-scale wavelet transform. The local maxima lines of the wavelet transform modulus are observed at different scales, and all singularities are mathematically characterised, allowing subsequent detection of the singularity relating to the first arrival. Examples of the use of this approach on typical synthetic and experimental bender element signals are also supplied, and these results are compared with those from other time and frequency domain approaches. The wavelet approach is not affected by near-field effects, but instead is characterised by a relatively consistent singularity related to the shear wave arrival time, across a range of frequencies and noise levels.

The Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is becoming increasingly popular for room acoustics simulation. Yet, the literature on grid excitation methods is relatively sparse, and source functions are traditionally implemented in a hard or additive form
using arbitrarily-shaped functions which do not necessarily obey the physical laws of sound generation. In this paper we formulate
a source function based on a small pulsating sphere model. A physically plausible method to inject a source signal into the grid
is derived from first principles, resulting in a source with a near-flat spectrum that does not scatter incoming waves. In the final
discrete-time formulation, the source signal is the result of passing a Gaussian pulse through a digital filter simulating the dynamics of the pulsating sphere, hence facilitating a physically correct means to design source functions that generate a prescribed sound field.

The feasibility of apertureless scanning near-field Raman microscopy, exploiting the local enhancement in Raman scattering in the vicinity of a silver or gold tip, was investigated. Using the finite difference time domain method we calculated the enhancement of electric field strength, and hence Raman scattering, achieved through the resonant excitation of local modes in the tip. By modelling the frequency-dependent dielectric response of the metal tip we were able to highlight the resonant nature of the tip-enhancement and determine the excitation wavelength required for the strongest electric field enhancement, and hence Raman scattering intensity, which occurs for the excitation of modes localized at the tip apex. It is demonstrated that a peak Raman enhancement of 10(7)-fold should be achievable with <5 nm spatial resolution. We show that surface-enhanced Raman scattering from carbon contamination on a silver or gold tip can be significant. However, we find for a tip of radius of curvature 20 nm that the Raman enhancement should decay totally within 20 nm from the tip. Hence withdrawal of the tip by this distance should lead to the disappearance of the tip-enhanced signal, leaving only that from carbon contamination on the tip itself and the intrinsic signal from the sample. In finite difference time domain simulation of room acoustics, source functions are subject to various constraints. These depend on the way sources are injected into the grid and on the chosen parameters of the numerical scheme being used. This paper addresses the issue of selecting and designing sources for finite difference simulation, by first reviewing associated aims and constraints, and evaluating existing source models against these criteria. The process of exciting a model is generalized by introducing a system of three cascaded filters, respectively, characterizing the driving pulse, the source mechanics, and the injection of the resulting source function into the grid. It is shown that hard, soft, and transparent sources can be seen as special cases within this unified approach. Starting from the mechanics of a small pulsating sphere, a parametric source model is formulated by specifying suitable filters. This physically constrained source model is numerically consistent, does not scatter incoming waves, and is free from zero- and low-frequency artifacts. Simulation results are employed for comparison with existing source formulations in terms of meeting the spectral and temporal requirements on the outward propagating wave.
