La arquitectura de la Obra Sindical del Hogar en la ciudad de Albacete: 1941-1981

En este estudio se presenta y analiza, proyectándola en su contexto, la producción de vivienda protegida acometida por la Obra Sindical del Hogar en la ciudad de Albacete, desde la creación de este organismo hasta su disolución, es decir, a lo largo de la dictadura franquista. La investigación viene, por un lado, a llenar el vacío que, en la bibliografía de referencia, existía, habida cuenta de que se trata de una arquitectura en su mayoría modesta, generalmente mal conservada, periférica y, en ocasiones, injustamente marginada que apenas ha interesado ni a los eruditos ni a los críticos. Por otro lado, el trabajo se alinea con el interés disciplinar que, desde hace ya bastante tiempo, despierta en el panorama nacional la vivienda social, tema clave tanto en el quehacer profesional de los arquitectos como en el conocimiento del devenir de la historia de la arquitectura moderna española y sus relaciones, intercambios e influencias con el ámbito internacional. Así, se estudian y documentan seis promociones que abarcan desde la escala del barrio (Barrio Hogar Nacional Sindicalista, al oeste del casco urbano), hasta la actuación puntual en un solar (Gabriel Ciscar, al norte), pasando por actuaciones que juegan con varios bloques y su composición (grupos San Juan Bautista, Emperador Carlos V o Lope de Vega, al sur), culminando con la construcción de un nuevo barrio (Hermanos Falcó), al dictado tanto de los aires que respira el urbanismo europeo (1ª fase), como de la entrega sin reservas a la especulación inmobiliaria (2ª fase, no realizada).

Catharine Waugh McCullouch papers in the Mary Earhart Dillon collection, 1869-1945

Collection primarily documents McCulloch's research on women's legal status, and her work with the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and the League of Women Voters. There is also documentation of women in the legal profession, of McCulloch's friendships with the other women suffragists and lawyers, and some biographical material. The papers contain little information about her family or social life.

Data compilation of ESOP

The work in this sub-project of ESOP focuses on the advective and convective transforma-tion of water masses in the Greenland Sea and its neighbouring areas. It includes observational work on the sub-mesoscale and analysis of hydrographic data up to the gyre-scale. Observations of active convective plumes were made with a towed chain equipped with up to 80 CTD sensors, giving a horizontal and vertical resolution of the hydrographic fields of a few metres. The observed scales of the penetrative convective plumes compare well with those given by theory. On the mesoscale the structure of homogeneous eddies formed as a result of deep convection was observed and the associated mixing and renewal of the intermediate layers quantified. The relative importance and efficiency of thermal and haline penetrative convection in relation to the surface boundary conditions (heat and salt fluxes and ice cover) and the ambient stratification are studied using the multi year time series of hydro-graphic data in the central Greenland Sea. The modification of the water column of the Greenland Sea gyre through advection from and mixing with water at its rim is assessed on longer time scales. The relative contributions are quantified using modern water mass analysis methods based on inverse techniques. Likewise the convective renewal and the spreading of the Arctic Intermediate Water from its formation area is quantified. The aim is to budget the heat and salt content of the water column, in particular of the low salinity surface layer, and to relate its seasonal and interannual variability to the lateral fluxes and the fluxes at the air-sea-ice interface. This will allow to estimate residence times for the different layers of the Greenland Sea gyre, a quantity important for the description of the Polar Ocean carbon cycle.
