OctVCE is a cartesian cell CFD code produced especially for numerical simulations of shock and blast wave interactions with complex geometries, in particular, from explosions. Virtual Cell Embedding (VCE) was chosen as its cartesian cell kernel for its simplicity and sufficiency for practical engineering design problems. The code uses a finite-volume formulation of the unsteady Euler equations with a second order explicit Runge-Kutta Godonov (MUSCL) scheme. Gradients are calculated using a least-squares method with a minmod limiter. Flux solvers used are AUSM, AUSMDV and EFM. No fluid-structure coupling or chemical reactions are allowed, but gas models can be perfect gas and JWL or JWLB for the explosive products. This report also describes the code’s ‘octree’ mesh adaptive capability and point-inclusion query procedures for the VCE geometry engine. Finally, some space will also be devoted to describing code parallelization using the shared-memory OpenMP paradigm. The user manual to the code is to be found in the companion report 2007/13.

Evidence of infection with spirorchid flukes (Digenea: Spirorchidae) was sought at necropsy of 96 stranded green turtles, Chelonia mydas, that were examined during the course of a survey of marine turtle mortality in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Three species of spirorchid (Hapalotrema mehrai, H. postorchis, and Neospirorchis schistosomatoides) were identified. Severe disease due to spirorchid fluke infection (spirorchidiasis) was implicated as the principal cause of mortality in 10 turtles (10%), and appeared to be one of multiple severe problems in an additional 29 turtles (30%). Although flukes were observed in only 45% of stranded C. mydas in this study, presumed spirorchid fluke infection was diagnosed in an additional 53% of turtles, based principally on characteristic necropsy lesions and to a lesser extent on the histopathological detection of spirorchid eggs. Characteristic necropsy lesions included miliary spirorchid egg granulomas, which were observed most readily on serosal surfaces, particularly of the small intestine. Cardiovascular lesions included mural endocarditis, arteritis, and thrombosis, frequently accompanied by aneurysm formation. Resolution of thrombi was observed to occur via a combination of granuloma formation about indigestible components (spirorchid fluke egg shells) and exteriorization through the vessel wall, which resulted in granulomatous nodules on the adventitial surface. Septic aortic thrombosis complicated by disseminated bacterial infection, observed in five turtles, was recorded for the first time. Egg granulomas were ubiquitous in turtle tissues throughout this study. Although they generally appeared to be mild or incidental lesions, they were occasionally associated with severe multifocal granulomatous pneumonia or meningitis.

Background In familial hyperaldosteronism type I (FH-I), glucocorticoid treatment suppresses adrenocorticotrophic hormone-regulated hybrid gene expression and corrects hyperaldosteronism. Objective To determine whether the wild-type aldosterone synthase genes, thereby released from chronic suppression, are capable of functioning normally. Methods We compared mid-morning levels of plasma potassium, plasma aldosterone, plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone : PRA ratios, measured with patients in an upright position, and responsiveness of aldosterone levels to infusion of angiotensin II (AII), for 11 patients with FH-I before and during long-term (0.8-14.3 years) treatment with 0.25-0.75 mg/day dexamethasone or 2.5-10 mg/day prednisolone. Results During glucocorticoid treatment, hypertension was corrected in all. Potassium levels, which had been low (< 3.5 mmol/l) in two patients before treatment, were normal in all during treatment (mean 4.0 +/- 0.1 mmol/l, range 3.5-4.6). Aldosterone levels during treatment [13.2 +/- 2.1 ng/100 ml (mean +/- SEM)] were lower than those before treatment (20.1 +/- 2.5 ng/100 ml, P < 0.05). PRA levels, which had been suppressed before treatment (0.5 +/- 0.2 ng/ml per h), were unsuppressed during treatment (5.1 +/- 1.5 ng/ml per h, P < 0.01) and elevated (> 4 ng/ml per h) in six patients. Aldosterone : PRA ratios, which had been elevated (> 30) before treatment (101.1 +/- 25.9), were much lower during treatment (4.1 +/- 1.0, P < 0.005) and below normal (< 5) in eight patients. Surprisingly, aldosterone level, which had not been responsive (< 50% rise) to infusion of AII for all 11 patients before treatment, remained unresponsive for 10 during treatment. Conclusions Apparently regardless of duration of glucocorticoid treatment in FH-I, aldosterone level remains poorly responsive to AII, with a higher than normal PRA and a low aldosterone : PRA ratio. This is consistent with there being a persistent defect in functioning of wild-type aldosterone synthase gene. (C) Rapid Science Publishers ISSN 0263-6352.

Measurements of molecular weights, soluble fractions and examination of NMR spectra of bisphenol-A polysulfone, after gamma irradiation in vacuum at 150 degrees C were used to elucidate the mechanism of crosslinking. Excellent agreement was obtained between G(S) and G(X) determined from measurements above and below the gel dose when a Y-linking mechanism was assumed, whereas poor agreement was obtained when an H-link mechanism was assumed, which is the mechanism normally believed to be responsible for crosslinking. New resonances were observed in the C-13 NMX spectra of the irradiated polymer which were consistent with the formation of Y-links involving phenylene units in the backbone chain. There is concern that Pacific Island economies dependent on remittances of migrants will endure foreign exchange shortages and falling living standards as remittance levels fall because of lower migration rates and the belief that migrants' willingness to remit declines over time. The empirical validity of the remittance-decay hypothesis has never been tested. From survey data on Tongan and Western Samoan migrants in Sydney, this paper estimates remittance functions using multivariate regression analysis. It is found that the remittance-decay hypothesis has no empirical validity, and migrants are motivated by factors other than altruistic family support, including asset accumulation and investment back home.

The nonlinear response of a chaotic system to a chaotic variation in a system parameter is investigated experimentally. Clear experimental evidence of frequency entrainment of the chaotic oscillations is observed. We show that analogous to the frequency locking between coupled periodic oscillations, this effect is generic for coupled chaotic systems.

Kidney function and the role of the cloacal complex in osmoregulation was investigated in estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) exposed to three environmental salinities: hypo-, iso- and hyperosmotic to the plasma. Plasma homeostasis was maintained over the range of salinities. Antidiuresis occurred with increased salinity. Although urine from the kidneys retained an osmotic pressure between 77% and 82% of the plasma, over 93% and 98% of plasma chloride filtered at the glomeruli was reabsorbed during passage through the kidneys under hypo and hyperosmotic conditions, respectively, and only 64% in iso-osmotic water. The kidneys were the primary site of sodium reabsorption under hypo-and hyperosmotic conditions. Secondary processing of urine during storage in the cloaca varied with salinity. During post renal storage of urine, the difference in urine osmotic pressure increased from -26.1 +/- 15.5 to 35.66 +/- 9.29 mOsM with increased salinity, and potassium concentration of urine increased over 3-fold in C. porosus from freshwater. The almost complete reabsorption of both sodium and chloride under hyperosmotic conditions indicates the necessity for secretory activity by the lingual salt glands. The osmoregulatory response of the kidneys and cloacal complex to environmental salinity is both plastic and complementary. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.

In order to derive mice which expressed both the E7 open reading frame transgene of human papillomavirus type 16 in skin and MHC class 1 restriction elements for several E7-encoded cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes, K14.HPV16E7 mice which express E7 in basal keratinocytes were crossed to the F1 generation with A2.1 K-b transgenic mice which express the MHC binding cleft domains of human HLA A*0201, and murine H-2(b). F1 mice (denoted K14E7xA2.1) expressed E7 in the thymus at least as early as 2-5 days before birth. Immunisation of FVBxA2.1 control mice (transgenic for HLA A*0201 and H-2(b) but not for E7), with two HLA A*0201-restricted epitopes of E7 and one H-2(b)-restricted CTL epitope of E7, gave strong primary CTL responses recognising epitope-pulsed or constitutively E7-expressing syngeneic target cells. In contrast, in immunised K14E7xA2.1 mice, the CTL responses to the H-2(b) epitope and one of the HLA A*0201 CTL epitopes were strongly down-regulated, and to the other HLA A*0201 epitope, completely abolished, as demonstrated by percentage specific killing by bulk splenocyte cultures in cyrotoxicity assays, and by CTL precursor frequency analysis, In thymus-transplanted bone marrow radiation chimeras in which the immune system of K14E7xA2.1 mice was replaced by a FVBxA2.1 immune system, specific immunisation did not result in reemergence of strong E7-directed CTL responses. In agreement with these in vitro findings, specific immunisation failed to significantly alter the course of E7-associated tumour development in K14E7xA2.1 mice. These data are consistent with a model of central deletional CTL tolerance to E7-encoded epitopes recognised in the context of two distinct MHC class 1 restriction elements, and with the possibility of peripheral T-cell anergy maintained by expression of E7 in the skin. The moving finite element collocation method proposed by Kill et al. (1995) Chem. Engng Sci. 51 (4), 2793-2799 for solution of problems with steep gradients is further developed to solve transient problems arising in the field of adsorption. The technique is applied to a model of adsorption in solids with bidisperse pore structures. Numerical solutions were found to match the analytical solution when it exists (i.e. when the adsorption isotherm is linear). The method is simple yet sufficiently accurate for use in adsorption problems, where global collocation methods fail. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Field collected flies were screened for the presence of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) by applying reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) in which primers specific to the capsid protein of the virus were used. The virus was detected in flies from locations where rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) was reported and also soon after the release of RHDV in a 'clean' area. Oral and/or anal excretions of flies (flyspots) were found to contain viable virus and oral inoculation of rabbits revealed that a single flyspot was able to cause RHD. We conclude that flyspots are a major potential source of the virus for oral or conjunctival transmission of the virus to rabbits. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, sustained, selective, divided, and switching attention, and reloading of working memory were investigated in schizophrenia by using a newly developed Visual Attention Battery (VAB). Twenty-four outpatients with schizophrenia and 24 control participants were studied using the VAB. Performance on VAB components was correlated with performance of standard tests. Patients with schizophrenia were significantly impaired on VAB tasks that required switching of attention and reloading of working memory but had normal performance on tasks involving sustained attention or attention to multiple stimulus features. Switching attention and reloading of working memory were highly correlated with Trails (B - A) score for patients. The decline in performance on the switching-attention task in patients with schizophrenia met criteria for a differential deficit in switching attention. Future research should examine the neurophysiological basis of the switching deficit and its sensitivity and specificity to schizophrenia.

Helicoverpa armigera is a serious insect pest of sweet corn in Australia and is becoming increasingly difficult to manage with conventional chemical insecticides due to resistance problems. A number of alternative H. armigera control options were evaluated in sweet corn and compared with deltamethrin and no action (control). The alternative tactics evaluated were: heliothis nuclear polyhedrosis virus plus Trichogramma nr. brassicae releases; Bacillus thuringiensis; and Trichogramma alone. The H. tea nuclear polyhedrosis virus + Trichogramma plots had the lowest cob damage (6.0%), followed by the B. thuringiensis plots (12.0%), Trichogramma alone plots (20.2%), control plots (23.2%) and deltamethrin plots (53.5%). There was no evidence to suggest that the Trichogramma nr. brassicae releases had any impact on H. armigera egg mortality. However, there was a large natural population of Trichogramma pretiosum in all plots. The application of deltamethrin reduced the action of these wasps and predators, resulting in higher larval infestation and significantly more cob damage. The findings indicate that the pathogens heliothis nuclear polyhedrosis virus and B. thuringiensis can effectively control H. armigera when their action complements high natural levels of egg parasitism, and that they have potential for use in integrated pest management programs in sweet corn.

Two basic representations of principal-agent relationships, the 'state-space' and 'parameterized distribution' formulations, have emerged. Although the state-space formulation appears more natural, analytical studies using this formulation have had limited success. This paper develops a state-space formulation of the moral-hazard problem using a general representation of production under uncertainty. A closed-form solution for the agency-cost problem is derived. Comparative-static results are deduced. Next we solve the principal's problem of selecting the optimal output given the agency-cost function. The analysis is applied to the problem of point-source pollution control. Analysis of the structure of the urochordate Herdmania curvata ribosomal DNA intergenic spacer (IGS) and its role in transcription initiation and termination suggests that rRNA gene regulation in this chordate differs from that in vertebrates. A cloned H, curvata IGS is 1881 bp and composed predominantly of two classes of similar repeat sequences that largely alternate in a tandem array. Southern blot hybridization demonstrates that the IGS length variation within an individual and population is largely the result of changes in internal repeat number. Nuclease S1 mapping and primer extension analyses suggest that there are two transcription initiation sites at the 3' end of the most 3' repetitive element; these sites are 6 nucleotides apart. Unlike mouse, Xenopus, and Drosophila, there is no evidence of transcription starting elsewhere in the IGS. Most sequence differences between the promoter repeat and the other internal repeats are in the vicinity of the putative initiation sites. As in Drosophila, nuclease S1 mapping of transcription termination sites suggest that there is not a definitive stop site and a majority of the pre-rRNAs read through a substantial portion of the IGS. Some transcription appears to proceed completely through the promoter repeat into the adjacent rDNA unit. Analysis of oocyte RNA by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirms that readthrough transcription into the adjacent rDNA unit is occurring in some small IGS length variants; there is no evidence of complete readthrough of IGSs larger than 1.0 kb.
