About 200 volcanic ash layers were recovered during DSDP Leg 57. The volcanic glass in some of these layers was investigated petrographically and chemically in this study. Volcanic glass is mainly rhyolitic and/or rhyodacitic in chemical composition, and its refractive index ranges from 1.496 to 1.529. Some volcanic ash layers consist of multiple grains of different chemical compositions. All the volcanic glass belongs to the tholeiitic and the calc-alkalic volcanic rock series, in SiO2-(Na2O + K2O) diagram and FeO*/MgO-SiO2 diagram. We correlated successfully three volcanic ash layers from the standpoint of chemical composition and biostratigraphy. Hydration of volcanic glass from Leg 57 is less intense than in other DSDP cores.

The development of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry has revolutionized the analysis of tephras by providing (1) an efficient and precise method for determining abundances of a wide variety of trace elements at low concentrations in individual glass shards and (2) assessment of geochemical heterogeneities within individual ash horizons. This development is important for petrogenetic studies of intraoceanic arc systems, where tephras provide the most complete temporal record of magmatism. Results from the Izu-Bonin and Mariana arc systems indicate that despite close geographical proximity and similar tectonic evolution, they contrast strongly in terms of geochemical evolution since 35 Ma. Whereas the Mariana tephras have exceptional compositional diversity, ranging from low-K (Oligocene), to high-K (Miocene), and subsequently medium-K compositions (Pliocene-Quaternary), the Izu-Bonin arc has been dominated by low-K compositions throughout. The Mariana increases in K are paralleled by increases in abundances of incompatible trace elements and by increased values of diagnostic ratios (e.g., Nb/yb and Th/yb) regarded as monitors of potential mantle-source fertility. The relative uniformity of Nb/yb and Nb/Zr ratios in Izu-Bonin tephras indicates that cyclic processes of backarc basin development and mantle depletion do not necessarily induce large-scale temporal geochemical variations in the associated arc. Temporal variability within the Mariana arc, and its divergence from the Izu-Bonin arc ca. 13 Ma, can be traced to a major injection of subducted sediment in the Mariana system at this time.

Precise velocity and density measurements at atmospheric and elevated pressures have been obtained on basalts drilled in 13 holes during Leg 54. The vp-sigma data show systematics which are controlled by the degree of crystallinity (or conversely, glassiness), microstructure, and original mineralogy and chemistry. Extensively fractionated basalts with marked iron enrichment produce anomalously low measured velocities at densities above 2.90 g/cm**3. Also, the effective in situ pressure acting on Leg 54 basalts is less than hydrostatic, and perhaps close to zero. At zero effective pressure, the measured velocities average 2.5 km/s higher than East Pacific Rise upper crustal velocities determined by seismic refraction. This implies that the in situ velocities are undoubtedly a result of the highly fragmented nature of East Pacific Rise crust.

The major magnetic mineral in the turbidites and slumped sediments recovered at Leg 73 drill sites was near to magnetite in composition and in the form of small multidomain particles. There was no variation in magnetic mineralogy with the lithology. The variations in the intensities and directions of the natural remanent magnetization could be explained in terms of postdepositional grain rotations within the wet sediment. In the sands realignment was partial, whereas in some of the slumps the entire remanent magnetization was reset. Fine-particle magnetite was also the main magnetic constituent of the red clays. A significant proportion of a higher-coercivity mineral was also present. The magnetic characteristics of the red clays are explained as a combination of concentration and grain rotation effects. The implications to the assessment of the reliability of paleomagnetic data are discussed. Note: Conversion factors are as follows: 1 Am**2/kg = 1 emu/g, and 80 A/m about 1 Oe.

Nontronite, the main metalliferous phase of the Galapagos mounds, occurs at subsurface depths of about 2 to 20 meters; Mn-oxide material is limited to the upper 2 meters of the mounds. The nontronite forms intervals of up to a few meters' thickness, consisting essentially of 100% nontronite granules, which alternate with intervals of normal pelagic sediment. Electron microprobe analyses of nontronite granules from different core samples indicate that: (1) there is little difference in major element composition between nontronites from varying locations within the mounds, with adjacent granules from a given sample having very similar compositions; (2) individual granules show little internal variation in composition. This indicates that the granules are composed of a single mineral of essentially constant composition, consistent with relatively uniform conditions of Eh and composition during nontronite formation. Mn-oxide crusts have very low Fe contents, a feature characteristic of rapidly deposited Mn-oxide crusts formed under hydrothermal influences. The rare-earth element (REE) abundances of the nontronites are generally extremely low, totalling less than several ppm. Two samples have the negatively Ce anomaly typical of authigenic precipitates formed relatively rapidly from seawater. A Mn-oxide crust sample has low REE contents, typical of Mn-oxide crusts formed under hydrothermal influences, but no negative Ce anomaly. A sample of unusual Mn-Fe-oxide mud has relatively high REE concentrations and a seawater-type pattern; both of these features are also found for metalliferous sediments from the East Pacific Rise. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of the nontronites define a restricted field within a d18O-dD plot. In manganiferous sediments, d18O and dD appear to decrease with increase in the Mn-oxide content of the sediment. From the d18O values of the nontronites, formation temperatures in the range of about 20-30°C have been estimated. By comparison, temperatures of up to 11.5 °C at a 9-meter depth have been directly measured within the mounds (Corliss et al., 1979), and heat-flow data suggest present basement/sediment interface temperatures of 15-25°C. In a plot of Fe + Mn vs. d18O, the Mn-oxide crust and Mn-Fe-ooze plot near the tie-lines for authigenic Mn nodules and silicate phases, implying that they have formed in isotopic equilibrium with seawater at or close to bottom-water temperatures.

Detrital K-feldspars and muscovites from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 116 cores that have depositional ages from 0 to 18 Ma have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar technique. Four to thirteen individual K-feldspars have been dated from seven stratigraphic levels, each of which have a very large range, up to 1660 Ma. At each level investigated, at least one K-feldspar yielded an age minimum which is, within uncertainty, identical to the age of deposition. One to twelve single muscovite crystals from each of six levels have also been studied. The range of muscovite ages is less than that of the K-feldspars and, with one exception, reveal only a 20-Ma spread in ages. As with the K-feldspars, each level investigated contains muscovites with mineral ages essentially identical to depositional ages. These results indicate that a significant portion of the material in the Bengal Fan is first-cycle detritus derived from the Himalayas. Therefore, the significant proportion of sediment deposited in the distal fan in the early to mid Miocene can be ascribed to a significant pulse of uplift and erosion in the collision zone. Moreover, these data indicate that during the entire Neogene, some portion of the Himalayan orogen was experiencing rapid erosion (<= uplift). The lack of granulite facies rocks in the eastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau suggests that very rapid uplift must have been distributed in brief pulses in different places in the mountain belt. We suggest that the great majority of the crystals with young apparent ages have been derived from the southern slope of the Himalayas, predominantly from near the main central thrust zone. These data provide further evidence against tectonic models in which the Himalayas and Tibetan plateaus are uplifted either uniformly during the past 40 m.y. or mostly within the last 2 to 5 m.y.

Diatoms are present in middle to lower upper Miocene sections of all holes examined during Leg 150, but are generally absent or in low abundance in Pleistocene to middle upper Miocene sediments. An exception is the alternating diatom-rich, diatom-poor intervals in upper Quaternary sediments. Five new diatom zones, covering an interval from near the lower/middle Miocene boundary to the lower upper Miocene, are proposed. Some of the taxon used to define these zones are also used in zonal schemes for the East Coast of the United States, and allow for correlations to be drawn between this region and Leg 150 sites. Lower Miocene and older levels are not included in this study. Although older Tertiary diatoms are present at some of the sites, dissolution has largely compromised their usefulness as zonal markers.

Sites 482, 483, and 485 were drilled during Leg 65 on young oceanic crust south of the Tamayo Transform Fault. The Leg 65 drilling program was part of a multinational effort to study the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and complements sea bottom surveys conducted both in this area (Lewis, 1979; Cyamex Scientific Team and Pastouret, 1981) and farther south at 21 °N (Larson, 1971; Normark, 1976; Cyamex Scientific Team; Rise Project Group, 1980). These studies, which included deep-tow, Angus and submersible surveys, were recently complemented by sea-beam surveys conducted by the Jean Charcot on the Tamayo Fracture Zone and farther south along the EPR. They have led to a better understanding of the magmatic, tectonic, and sedimentary processes occurring on the East Pacific Rise between the Tamayo and Rivera fracture zones. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the metamorphic processes affecting Pliocene through Quaternary sediments found in contact, or inter layered, with basaltic units drilled during Leg 65 at the mouth of the Gulf of California.

Stable isotope analysis of two species (or groups of species) of planktonic foraminifers: Globigerinoides ruber (or G. obliquus and G. obliquus extremus) and Globigerina bulloides (or G. falconensis and G. obesa) from ODP Hole 653A and Site 654 in the Tyrrhenian basin, records the Pliocene-Pleistocene glacial history of the Northern Hemisphere. The overall increase in mean d18O values through the interval 4.6-0.08 Ma is 1.7 per mil for G. bulloides and 1.5 per mil for G. ruber. The time interval 3.1-2.5 Ma corresponds to an important phase of 18O enrichment for planktonic foraminifers. In this interval, glacial d18O values of both species G. bulloides and G. ruber increase by about l per mil, this increase being more progressive for G. ruber than for G. bulloides. The increase of interglacial d18O values is higher for G. bulloides (1.5 per mil) than for the Gruber group (1 per mil). These data suggest a more pronounced seasonal stratification of the water masses during interglacial phases. Large positive d18O fluctuations of increasing magnitude are also recorded at 2.25 and 2.15 Ma by G bulloides and appear to be diachronous with those of Site 606 in the Atlantic Ocean. Other events of increasing d18O values are recorded between 1.55 and 1.3 Ma, at 0.9 Ma, 0.8 Ma, and near 0.34 Ma. In the early Pliocene the d18O variability recorded by the planktonic species G. bulloides was higher in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic at the same latitude. This suggests that important cyclic variations in the water budget of the Mediterranean occurred since that time. Step increases in the d18O variability are synchronous with those of the open ocean at 0.9 and 0.34 Ma. The higher variability as well as the higher amplitude of the peaks of 18O enrichment may be partly accounted for by increase of dryness over the Mediterranean area. In particular the high amplitude d18O fluctuations recorded between 3.1 and 2.1 Ma are correlated with the onset of a marked seasonal contrast and a summer dryness, revealed by pollen analyses. Strong fluctuations towards d13C values higher than modern ones are recorded by the G. ruber group species before 1.7 Ma and suggest a high production of phytoplankton. When such episodes of high primary production are correlated with episodes of decreasing 13C content of G. bulloides, they are interpreted as the consequence of a higher stratification of the upper water masses resulting itself from a marked seasonality. Such episodes occur between 4.6 and 4.05 Ma, 3.9 and 3.6 Ma, and 3.25 and 2.66 Ma. The interval 2.66-1.65 Ma corresponds to a weakening of the stratification of the upper water layers. This may be related to episodes of cooling and increasing dryness induced by the Northern Hemisphere Glaciations. The Pleistocene may have been a less productive period. The transition from highly productive to less productive surface waters also coincides with a new step increase in dryness and cooling, between 1.5 and 1.3 Ma. The comparison of the 13C records of G ruber and G. bulloides in fact suggests that a high vertical convection became a dominant feature after 2.6 Ma. Increases in the nutrient input and the stratification of the upper water masses may be suspected, however, during short episodes near 0.86 Ma (isotopic stage 25), 0.57-0.59 Ma (isotopic stage 16), 0.49 Ma (isotopic stage 13), 0.4-0.43 Ma (isotopic stage 11), and 0.22 and 0.26 Ma (part of isotopic stage 7 and transition 7/8). In fact, changes in the C02 balance within the different water masses of the Tyrrhenian basin as well as in the local primary production did not follow the general patterns of the open ocean.

The results of shore-based three-axis resistivity and X-ray computed tomography (CT) measurements on cube-shaped samples recovered during Leg 185 are presented along with moisture and density, P-wave velocity, resistivity, and X-ray CT measurements on whole-round samples of representative lithologies from Site 1149. These measurements augment the standard suite of physical properties obtained during Leg 185 from the cube samples and samples obtained adjacent to the cut cubes. Both shipboard and shore-based measurements of physical properties provide information that assists in characterizing lithologic units, correlating cored material with downhole logging data, understanding the nature of consolidation, and interpreting seismic reflection profiles.

Sites 815 and 817 were drilled near the Townsville Trough during Leg 133 of the Ocean Drilling Program. The physical properties, compressional-wave velocity, and consolidation characteristics indicate that the periplatform carbonate sediments maintain more water content and lower compressional velocity near the Queensland Plateau than the clayey hemipelagic sediments, which have a clay content of up to 60%. Bulk density, void ratio or porosity, water content, and compressional-wave velocity are shown to have a linear relationship with burial depth. Between 3.5 and 5 Ma (about 100-500 mbsf), these physical properties maintained a constant rate vs. the depth in core because of the fast sedimentation-rate effect at Site 815. However, compressionalwave velocity still increases downward in this section. The clay content in this section causes an increase of bulk modulus and compaction effect. At Site 817, scarce terrigenous mud content and abundant carbonate content (88%-97%) cause a straight line relationship between physical properties and burial depth. During the consolidation test, we show that dominant micritic particles may cause faster acoustic velocity than sediments composed mainly of coccoliths. The bulk modulus ratio increasing rate in the clay-rich carbonate sediments is almost 4.5 times higher than in the clay-free periplatform carbonate sediments.

Although the objective of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 191 was to install a seismic monitoring station and to test a hard rock reentry drilling system, several good, near-continuous sedimentary core sequences were recovered during the cruise. Two holes, 1179B and 1179C, yielded an upper Miocene to Pleistocene diatom record through an expanded section with excellent recovery. Because diatom species included in both low-latitude and high-latitude biostratigraphies are present, zonations for the equatorial Pacific and northwest Pacific are applied to the sediments. The oldest zones from each zonation that are represented in the cores are the Nitzschia miocenica Zone and the Rouxia californica Zone, respectively. Only one zonal boundary is not observed within the diatom assemblage, that being the top of the Nitzschia jouseae Zone and base of the Rhizosolenia praebergonii Subzone A (equatorial Pacific). Preservation is good overall, and sample abundances vary from rare to abundant. This would be an excellent section for further biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, and paleoceanographic study.

From the equatorial Indian Ocean, carbonate-free portions of sediment samples of Paleocene to Miocene calcareous oozes and chalks from Sites 707, 709, and 711 were studied using X-ray diffraction measurements and the scanning electron microscope. Downhole variations in biogenic opal, quartz, barite, and clinoptilolite were investigated. The abundance patterns of these major mineral phases show several similarities and may be used for additional lithologic correlations. Variations in biogenic opal contents reflect biogenic silica productivity. Beside the general pattern, a succession in biogenic silica decrease through time is generally recorded since the Oligocene. This succession started earliest at northernmost Site 711 and latest at southernmost Site 707, including Site 709 within these two. Opal-A variations as well as the barite distribution may be influenced by the paleoposition of the sites in relation to the high-productivity zone, which today lies south of the equator. Authigenic clinoptilolite apparently formed in two different modes. In deeper sediment intervals, clinoptilolite was the last mineral phase formed associated with enhanced silica diagenesis. In late Oligocene to middle Miocene sediments, clinoptilolite was the only authigenic silica phase encountered where otherwise strong opal dissolution was observed. The sponge spicules showed special dissolution features probably related to microbiological activity. Silica concretions mainly composed of opal-CT and authigenic quartz occur in carbonate-rich environments and are formed during later diagenesis when burial depth causes the sediments to reach higher temperatures. Opal-CT concretions in carbonate-free siliceous oozes were found at Site 711 and are probably formed during an early stage of silica diagenesis.
