We herewith present the critical edition, translation and notes from the second commentary of Abraham ibn Ezra on the Song of Songs. This work is preceded by an introductory study that considers among others, various aspects of the commentary and the influence that the previous and contemporary Jewish exegesis to Ibn Ezra’s may exert on his interpretations of the Song of Songs. Finally, we analyze some of the features that are part of the commentary of Ibn Ezra on the Canticles. Summary: Objectives and results It is the purpose of this work to go into detail about the study of the exegetical texts of Abraham ibn Ezra, and in particular the text of this second commentary of Ibn Ezra on Song of Songs, whose translation and critical edition is the subject of this work. This is especially interesting since it is one of the few translations from the original Hebrew, among which are the Latin translation of Gilberto Genebrardo, published in Paris in 1585 and the English edition of Richard A. Block, published in 1982 in Cincinnati. This edition of the second commentary of Ibn Ezra on the Song of Songs continues the lead of previous work carried out in the translation and critical edition of Ibn Ezra's comments to Ecclesiastes, Esther, and Job by Mariano Gómez Aranda and the commentary to Book of Ruth by Maria Josefa Azcárraga Servert. The translation of Abraham ibn Ezrás text on the aforementioned second commentary on the Song of Songs, and the drawing up of the critical edition by selecting manuscripts that, once collated, will lead to the Hebrew text that will be used for the Castilian version is the basis of the present work. Of the thirty-three existing manuscripts of Ibn Ezra's commentary on the Canticles, ten have been rejected in principle since they belong to the first commentary, whose text on two manuscripts was translated into English by H. J. Mathews in 1874. Only thirteen out of the remaining twenty three manuscripts have been used for drawing up the critical edition, since ten of them have not been included in the present edition in spite of their belonging to the second commentary...

Pollutants originating with roof runoff can have a significant impact to urban stormwater quality. This signifies the importance of understanding pollutant processes on roof surfaces. Additionally, knowledge of pollutant processes on roof surfaces is important as roofs are used as the primary catchment surface for domestic rainwater harvesting. In recent years, rainwater harvesting has become one of the primary sustainable water management techniques to counteract the growing demand for potable water. Similar to all impervious services, pollutants associated with roof runoff undergo two primary processes: build-up and wash-off. The knowledge relating to these processes is limited. This paper presents outcomes of an in-depth research study into pollutant build-up and wash-off for roof surfaces. The knowledge will be important in order to develop appropriate strategies to safeguard rainwater users from possible health risks.

Generating accurate population-specific public health messages regarding sun protection requires knowledge about seasonal variation in sun exposure in different environments. To address this issue for a subtropical area of Australia, we used polysulphone badges to measure UVR for the township of Nambour (26° latitude) and personal UVR exposure among Nambour residents who were taking part in a skin cancer prevention trial. Badges were worn by participants for two winter and two summer days. The ambient UVR was approximately three times as high in summer as in winter. However, participants received more than twice the proportion of available UVR in winter as in summer (6.5%vs 2.7%, P < 0.05), resulting in an average ratio of summer to winter personal UVR exposure of 1.35. The average absolute difference in daily dose between summer and winter was only one-seventh of a minimal erythemal dose. Extrapolating from our data, we estimate that ca. 42% of the total exposure received in the 6 months of winter (June–August) and summer (December–February) is received during the three winter months. Our data show that in Queensland a substantial proportion of people’s annual UVR dose is obtained in winter, underscoring the need for dissemination of sun protection messages throughout the year in subtropical and tropical climates.

Proper application of sunscreen is essential as an effective public health strategy for skin cancer prevention. Insufficient application is common among sunbathers, results in decreased sun protection and may therefore lead to increased UV damage of the skin. However, no objective measure of sunscreen application thickness (SAT) is currently available for field-based use. We present a method to detect SAT on human skin for determining the amount of sunscreen applied and thus enabling comparisons to manufacturer recommendations. Using a skin swabbing method and subsequent spectrophotometric analysis, we were able to determine SAT on human skin. A swabbing method was used to derive SAT on skin (in mg sunscreen per cm2 of skin area) through the concentration–absorption relationship of sunscreen determined in laboratory experiments. Analysis differentiated SATs between 0.25 and 4 mg cm−2 and showed a small but significant decrease in concentration over time postapplication. A field study was performed, in which the heterogeneity of sunscreen application could be investigated. The proposed method is a low cost, noninvasive method for the determination of SAT on skin and it can be used as a valid tool in field- and population-based studies.
