We present a remote sensing observational method for the measurement of the spatio-temporal dynamics of ocean waves. Variational techniques are used to recover a coherent space-time reconstruction of oceanic sea states given stereo video imagery. The stereoscopic reconstruction problem is expressed in a variational optimization framework. There, we design an energy functional whose minimizer is the desired temporal sequence of wave heights. The functional combines photometric observations as well as spatial and temporal regularizers. A nested iterative scheme is devised to numerically solve, via 3-D multigrid methods, the system of partial differential equations resulting from the optimality condition of the energy functional. The output of our method is the coherent, simultaneous estimation of the wave surface height and radiance at multiple snapshots. We demonstrate our algorithm on real data collected off-shore. Statistical and spectral analysis are performed. Comparison with respect to an existing sequential method is analyzed.

We develop a novel remote sensing technique for the observation of waves on the ocean surface. Our method infers the 3-D waveform and radiance of oceanic sea states via a variational stereo imagery formulation. In this setting, the shape and radiance of the wave surface are given by minimizers of a composite energy functional that combines a photometric matching term along with regularization terms involving the smoothness of the unknowns. The desired ocean surface shape and radiance are the solution of a system of coupled partial differential equations derived from the optimality conditions of the energy functional. The proposed method is naturally extended to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of ocean waves and applied to three sets of stereo video data. Statistical and spectral analysis are carried out. Our results provide evidence that the observed omnidirectional wavenumber spectrum S(k) decays as k-2.5 is in agreement with Zakharov's theory (1999). Furthermore, the 3-D spectrum of the reconstructed wave surface is exploited to estimate wave dispersion and currents.

El atrio incorporado en los edificios ha sido un recurso espacial que tempranamente se difundió a nivel global, siendo adoptado por las distintas arquitecturas locales en gran parte del mundo. Su masificación estuvo favorecida primero por la rápida evolución de la tecnología del acero y el vidrio, a partir del siglo XIX, y en segundo termino por el posterior desarrollo del hormigón armado. Otro aspecto que explica tal aceptación en la arquitectura contemporánea, es de orden social y radica en la llamativa cavidad del espacio describiendo grandes dimensiones y favoreciendo con ello, el desarrollo de una multiplicidad de usos en su interior que antes eran impensados. Al interior del atrio, la luz natural es clave en las múltiples vivencias que alberga y sea tal vez la condición ambiental más valorada, ya que entrega una sensación de bienestar al conectarnos visualmente con el ambiente natural. Por esta razón de acuerdo al método hipotético deductivo, se evaluaron los efectos de la configuración geométrica, la cubierta y la orientación en el desempeño de la iluminación natural en la planta baja, a partir un modelo extraído desde el inventario de los edificios atrio construidos en Santiago de Chile, en los últimos 30 años que fue desarrollado en el capitulo 2. El análisis cuantitativo de los edificios inventariados se elaboró en el capítulo 3, considerando las dimensiones de los atrios. Simultáneamente fueron clasificados los aspectos constructivos, los materiales y las características del ambiente interior de cada edificio. En esta etapa además, fueron identificadas las variables de estudio de las proporciones geométricas de la cavidad del atrio con los coeficientes de aspecto de las proporciones, en planta (PAR), en corte (SAR) y de la cavidad según (WI), (AR) y (RI). Del análisis de todos estos parámetros se extrajo el modelo de prueba. El enfoque del estudio del capítulo 4 fue la iluminación natural, se revisaron los conceptos y el comportamiento en el atrio, a partir de un modelo físico construido a escala para registro de la iluminancia bajo cielo soleado de la ciudad. Más adelante se construyó el modelo en ambiente virtual, relacionando las variables determinadas por la geometría de la cavidad y el cerramiento superior; examinándose de esta manera distintas transparencias, proporciones de apertura, en definitiva se evaluó un progresivo cerramiento de las aberturas, verificando el ingreso de la luz y disponibilidad a nivel de piso con la finalidad, de proveer lineamientos útiles en una primera etapa del diseño arquitectónico. Para el análisis de la iluminación natural se revisaron diferentes métodos de cálculo con el propósito de evaluar los niveles de iluminancia en un plano horizontal al interior del atrio. El primero de ellos fue el Factor de Luz Día (FLD) que corresponde, a la proporción de la iluminancia en un punto de evaluación interior respecto, la cantidad proveniente del exterior bajo cielo nublado, a partir de la cual se obtuvo resultados que revelaron la alta luminosidad del cielo nublado de la ciudad. Además fueron evaluadas las recientes métricas dinámicas que dan cuenta, de la cantidad de horas en las cuales de acuerdo a los extensos registros meteorológico de la ciudad, permitieron obtener el porcentajes de horas dentro de las cuales se cumplió el estándar de iluminancia requerido, llamado autonomía lumínica (DA) o mejor aún se permanece dentro de un rango de comodidad visual en el interior del atrio referido a la iluminancia diurna útil (UDI). En el Capítulo 5 se exponen los criterios aplicados al modelo de estudio y cada una de las variantes de análisis, además se profundizó en los antecedentes y procedencia de las fuentes de los registros climáticos utilizados en las simulaciones llevadas a cabo en el programa Daysim operado por Radiance. Que permitieron evaluar el desempeño lumínico y la precisión, de cada uno de los resultados para comprobar la disponibilidad de iluminación natural a través de una matriz. En una etapa posterior se discutieron los resultados, mediante la comparación de los datos logrados según cada una de las metodologías de simulación aplicada. Finalmente se expusieron las conclusiones y futuras lineas de trabajo, las primeras respecto el dominio del atrio de cuatro caras, la incidencia del control de cerramiento de la cubierta y la relación establecida con la altura; indicando en lo específico que las mediciones de iluminancia bajo el cielo soleado de verano, permitieron aclarar, el uso de la herramienta de simulación y método basado en el clima local, que debido a su reciente desarrollo, orienta a futuras líneas de trabajo profundizando en la evaluación dinámica de la iluminancia contrastado con monitorización de casos. ABSTRACT Atriums incorporated into buildings have been a spatial resource that quickly spread throughout the globe, being adopted by several local architecture methods in several places. Their widespread increase was highly favored, in the first place, with the rapid evolution of steel and glass technologies since the nineteen century, and, in second place, by the following development of reinforced concrete. Another issue that explains this success into contemporary architecture is associated with the social approach, and it resides in the impressive cavity that describes vast dimensions, allowing the development of multiple uses in its interior that had never been considered before. Inside the atrium, daylight it is a key element in the many experiences that involves and it is possibly the most relevant environmental factor, since it radiates a feeling of well-being by uniting us visually with the natural environment. It is because of this reason that, following the hypothetical deductive method, the effects in the performance of daylight on the floor plan were evaluated considering the geometric configuration, the deck and orientation factors. This study was based in a model withdrawn from the inventory of atrium buildings that were constructed in Santiago de Chile during the past thirty years, which will be explained later in chapter 2. The quantitative analysis of the inventory of those buildings was elaborated in chapter 3, considering the dimensions of the atriums. Simultaneously, several features such as construction aspects, materials and environmental qualities were identified inside of each building. At this stage, it were identified the variables of the geometric proportions of the atrium’s cavity with the plan aspect ratio of proportions in first plan (PAR), in section (SAR) and cavity according to well index (WI), aspect ratio (AR) and room index (RI). An experimental model was obtained from the analysis of all the mentioned parameters. The main focus of the study developed in chapter 4 is daylight. The atrium’s concept and behavior were analyzed from a physical model built under scale to register the illuminances under clear, sunny sky of the city. Later on, this physical model was built in a virtual environment, connecting the variables determined by the geometry of the cavity and the superior enclosure, allowing the examination of transparencies and opening proportions. To summarize, this stage consisted on evaluating a progressive enclosure of the openings, checking the access of natural light and its availability at the atrium floor, in an effort to provide useful guidelines during the first stage of the architectural design. For the analysis of natural lighting, several calculations methods were used in order to determine the levels of illuminances in a horizontal plane inside of the atrium. The first of these methods is the Daylight Factor (DF), which consists in the proportion of light in an evaluation interior place with the amount of light coming from the outside in a cloudy day. Results determined that the cloudy sky of the city has high levels of luminosity. In addition, the recent dynamic metrics were evaluated which reflects the hours quantity. According to the meteorological records of the city’s climate, the standard of illuminance- a standard measure called Daylight Autonomy (DA) – was met. This is even better when the results stay in the line of visual convenience within the atrium, which is referred to as Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI). In chapter 5, it was presented the criteria applied to the study model and on each of the variants of the analysis. Moreover, the information of the climate records used for the simulations - carried out in the Daysim program managed by Radiance – are detailed. These simulations allowed the observation of the daylight performance and the accuracy of each of the results to confirm the availability of natural light through a matrix. In a later stage, the results were discussed comparing the collected data in each of the methods of simulation used. Finally, conclusions and further discussion are presented. Overall, the four side atrium’s domain and the effect of the control of the cover’s enclosure. Specifically, the measurements of the daylight under summer’s clear, sunny sky allowing clarifying the use of the simulation tool and the method based on the local climate. This method allows defining new and future lines of work deepening on the dynamic of the light in contrast with the monitoring of the cases.

Nighttime satellite imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) has a unique capability to observe nocturnal light emissions from sources including cities, wild fires, and gas flares. Data from the DMSP OLS is used in a wide range of studies including mapping urban areas, estimating informal economies, and estimating urban populations. Given the extensive and increasing list of applications a repeatable method for assessing geolocation accuracy, performing inter-calibration, and defining the minimum detectable brightness would be beneficial. An array of portable lights was designed and taken to multiple field sites known to have no other light sources. The lights were operated during nighttime overpasses by the DMSP OLS and observed in the imagery. A first estimate of the minimum detectable brightness is presented based on the field experiments conducted. An assessment of the geolocation accuracy was performed by measuring the distance between the GPS measured location of the lights and the observed location in the imagery. A systematic shift was observed and the mean distance was measured at 2.9km. A method for in situ radiance calibration of the DMSP OLS using a ground based light source as an active target is presented. The wattage of light used by the active target strongly correlates with the signal measured by the DMSP OLS. This approach can be used to enhance our ability to make inter-temporal and inter-satellite comparisons of DMSP OLS imagery. Exploring the possibility of establishing a permanent active target for the calibration of nocturnal imaging systems is recommended. The methods used to assess the minimum detectable brightness, assess the geolocation accuracy, and build inter-calibration models lay the ground work for assessing the energy expended on light emitted into the sky at night. An estimate of the total energy consumed to light the night sky globally is presented.

The permanent exhibition of the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart, Schloss Rosenstein, contains the cross section of a California coast redwood tree (Sequoia sempervirens) from Humboldt County, California, felled in 1966 reveals 1285 annual tree-rings. The measured thicknesses of tree-rings comprise a time series with distinct thickness variations, which are the expression of changing environmental conditions such as precipitation and fog. These factors are controlled by nearby coastal upwelling, which is again influenced by El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and which in turn can be influenced by variations of solar radiance. In fact, the tree-ring time series comprises evidence for three orders of solar cycles that may have indirectly controlled tree growth: Hale cycle (21.9 yr), Gleissberg cycle (88.6 yr) and De Vries cycle (209.8 yr). These interpretations should, however, be treated with caution, because it is the only cross section known and the acquirement of reliable data requires cross dating of several sections. Arctic sea ice has declined and become thinner and younger (more seasonal) during the last decade. One consequence of this is that the surface energy budget of the Arctic Ocean is changing. While the role of surface albedo has been studied intensively, it is still widely unknown how much light penetrates through sea ice into the upper ocean, affecting sea-ice mass balance, ecosystems, and geochemical processes. Here we present the first large-scale under-ice light measurements, operating spectral radiometers on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) under Arctic sea ice in summer. This data set is used to produce an Arctic-wide map of light distribution under summer sea ice. Our results show that transmittance through first-year ice (FYI, 0.11) was almost three times larger than through multi-year ice (MYI, 0.04), and that this is mostly caused by the larger melt-pond coverage of FYI (42 vs. 23%). Also energy absorption was 50% larger in FYI than in MYI. Thus, a continuation of the observed sea-ice changes will increase the amount of light penetrating into the Arctic Ocean, enhancing sea-ice melt and affecting sea-ice and upper-ocean ecosystems.

O presente estudo visou comparar in vitro o atrito produzido por braquetes convencionais metálicos e estéticos com canaleta metálica e vítrea quando inseridos fios de secções redonda e retangular de diferentes dimensões, simulando situações sem deslocamento, com deslocamento de 2 mm e com simulação do efeito binding 3º. Foram utilizados 125 braquetes de 5 marcas comerciais (Roth Standard, Composite, Elation, Invu e Radiance), sendo 25 braquetes para cada corpo de prova. Para os ensaios laboratoriais, foram colados 5 braquetes simulando uma hemi-arcada superior direita (incisivos central e lateral, canino, primeiro e segundo premolares) em um dispositivo para posicionamento dos braquetes, sendo este acoplado à máquina universal de ensaios EMIC DL2000. Foram empregados os fios 0,016 , 0,018 e 0,017 x 0,025 NiTi para realização dos ensaios sem deslocamento e com deslocamento de 2 mm e os fios de secção 0,017 x 0,025 , 0,019 x 0,025 e 0,021 x 0,025 CrNi para realização dos ensaios com angulação zero grau e 3º. Para a comparação entre os braquetes nos diferentes fios e angulações, foi utilizada a Análise de Variância e o teste de Tukey (p<0,05). Os resultados demonstraram que nos ensaios sem deslocamento o braquete estético de policarbonato Composite apresentou menor atrito em todos os fios avaliados, enquanto o maior atrito em todas as combinações realizadas foi observado no braquete estético cerâmico monocristalino Radiance em relação aos demais braquetes. Nos ensaios com deslocamento de 2 mm e simulação do efeito binding 3º, os resultados foram semelhantes aos observados nos ensaios sem deslocamento. Contudo, houve uma diferença estatisticamente significante entre os cinco corpos de prova, sendo o atrito verificado, respectivamente e de forma crescente, nos braquetes Composite, Roth Standard, Elation, Invu e Radiance. Pôde-se concluir que a resistência friccional teve influência da composição dos braquetes, diâmetro dos fios e tipo de ensaio realizado (deslocamento de 2 mm e angulação de 3º). Além disso, a inserção da canaleta metálica no braquete estético de policarbonato Elation reduziu de forma estatisticamente significante o atrito, porém esse foi maior do que o gerado por um braquete convencional metálico e, por fim, a incorporação da canaleta vítrea no braquete estético cerâmico policristalino Invu ofereceu uma maior lisura de superfície, reduzindo as irregularidades e imperfeições presentes na canaleta o que levou, consequentemente, a uma redução estatisticamente significante no atrito, o que demonstra que a modificação em sua canaleta favoreceu o deslocamento e reduziu de forma efetiva essa resistência à fricção.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an objective difference in reading between four commonly available lamps, of varying spectral radiance, for 13 subjects with age-related maculopathy (ARM) or non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - logMAR visual acuity between 0.04 and 0.68. At a constant illuminance of 2000 lux, there was no interaction between ARM and AMD subgroups and no statistically significant difference between the lamps: standard (clear envelope) incandescent, daylight simulation (blue tint envelope) incandescent, compact fluorescent and halogen incandescent, for any reading outcome measure (threshold print size p = 0.67, critical print size p = 0.74, acuity reserve p = 0.84 and mean reading rate p = 0.78). For lamps typically used in low-vision rehabilitation, a clinically significant effect of spectral radiance on reading for people with ARM or non-exudative AMD is unlikely. © 2007 The College of Optometrists.

Purpose: To optimize anterior eye fluorescein viewing and image capture. Design: Prospective experimental investigation. Methods: The spectral radiance of ten different models of slit-lamp blue luminance and the spectral transmission of three barrier filters were measured. Optimal clinical instillation of fluorescein was evaluated by a comparison of four different instillation methods of fluorescein into 10 subjects. Two methods used a floret, and two used minims of different concentration. The resulting fluorescence was evaluated for quenching effects and efficiency over time. Results: Spectral radiance of the blue illumination typically had an average peak at 460 nm. Comparison between three slit-lamps of the same model showed a similar spectral radiance distribution. Of the slit-lamps examined, 8.3% to 50.6% of the illumination output was optimized for >80% fluorescein excitation, and 1.2% to 23.5% of the illumination overlapped with that emitted by the fluorophore. The barrier filters had an average cut-off at 510 to 520 nm. Quenching was observed for all methods of fluorescein instillation. The moistened floret and the 1% minim reached a useful level of fluorescence in on average ∼20s (∼2.5× faster than the saturated floret and 2% minim) and this lasted for ∼160 seconds. Conclusions: Most slit-lamps' blue light and yellow barrier filters are not optimal for fluorescein viewing and capture. Instillation of fluorescein using a moistened floret or 1% minim seems most clinically appropriate as lower quantities and concentrations of fluorescein improve the efficiency of clinical examination. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. This work focuses on the construction and application of coded apertures to compressive X-ray tomography. Coded apertures can be made in a number of ways, each method having an impact on system background and signal contrast. Methods of constructing coded apertures for structuring X-ray illumination and scatter are compared and analyzed. Apertures can create structured X-ray bundles that investigate specific sets of object voxels. The tailored bundles of rays form a code (or pattern) and are later estimated through computational inversion. Structured illumination can be used to subsample object voxels and make inversion feasible for low dose computed tomography (CT) systems, or it can be used to reduce background in limited angle CT systems.

On the detection side, coded apertures modulate X-ray scatter signals to determine the position and radiance of scatter points. By forming object dependent projections in measurement space, coded apertures multiplex modulated scatter signals onto a detector. The multiplexed signals can be inverted with knowledge of the code pattern and system geometry. This work shows two systems capable of determining object position and type in a 2D plane, by illuminating objects with an X-ray `fan beam,' using coded apertures and compressive measurements. Scatter tomography can help identify materials in security and medicine that may be ambiguous with transmission tomography alone.
